Still in bed with her eyes closed, a smile stretched across Lena's lips as she remembered the events of last night. She finally opened her eyes slowly, "Last night was amazing." She said as she rolled over.
To her surprise and dismay, the bed was empty and Kara was gone. Maybe she went to take a shower or get coffee and cronuts she thought as she sat up in bed. She listened for the shower but it wasn't running and when she looked around the room, Kara's clothes were gone. Lena reached for her cellphone on her night stand and went to text Kara; she paused for a minute thinking of what to say that wouldn't make her sound too needy.
'Hey, sorry I missed you leave this morning.' She said the words out loud to herself as she typed hoping it would sound casual. She hit send and waited. When Kara texted her back telling her she was sorry but had to go to work for a new assignment she didn't think anything more about it. She got up, showered, got dressed and headed to work.
Just after noon, she texted Kara asking if she wanted to get lunch, she waited over an hour with no response then texted her asking if everything was okay. As she sat at her desk in her office eating lunch, she thought about last night and wondered if Kara was thinking about it too.
By the end of the day Lena still hadn't heard from Kara and she started to wonder if Kara was busy at work or regretting last night. She texted her and asked that she call her later. She sighed heavily as she gathered her things and left her office.
She got a text back from Kara just as she entered her penthouse and she frowned reading it, 'Swamped at work and now going out of town for a story. Call when I can.'
Lena grabbed a bottle of wine as her bathtub slowing filled. She padded back to the bathroom, setting the wine and a glass down on the small side table by the tub. She poured in a little bit of rose scented bubble bath before removing her silk robe and slowly slipping into the tub. She closed her eyes as she laid her head back; she inhaled the relaxing scent as the hot water melted the tension in muscles.
She opened her wine, poured herself a glass and as she sipped, she started to wonder if Kara was avoiding her. Was she freaking out because they were friends? It was understandable she guessed, maybe Lena was the first woman she'd ever been with. The questions in her head gave way to her reminiscing about the night before, about each kiss and touch. She smiled as she slid further down into the tub and continued to drink.
They had planned to go to dinner and Lena had just arrived at the restaurant when Kara texted her, 'Duty calls.' Lena knew what that had meant, they had come up with a code for when Kara had to go off and be Supergirl. She texted back 'no problem' then sighed heavily as she went home.
An hour later there was a knock at her door and when she opened it, Kara was there with a smile and Thai take-out. Lena smiled and let her in.
They ate, talked and shared with each other. Kara told her about a few of her misadventures as Supergirl and some of her time growing up as an awkward alien teen in Midvale.
"I wish I could have known you back then."
Kara laughed, "I don't. I was such a huge nerd back then."
"As opposed to now?"
"Hey!" Kara smacked her with a throw pillow.
Lena grabbed the pillow before Kara could retreat, "Oh don't hurt me Supergirl, I'm just a weak human."
Kara looked at her, her smile faded, "You are many things Lena Luthor but weak is most definitely not one of them."
Lena blushed but didn't look away from Kara who was staring into her eyes. Kara gently pulled on the pillow bringing Lena closer to her and then to Lena's surprise, she kissed her.
When Kara pulled back, Lena could see the shock on her face so instead of saying anything she leaned in and kissed her again.
After that second kiss, things progressed rather quickly as they made their way to the bedroom leaving a trail of clothes behind. She let Kara take the lead and where she led them was amazing.
By the time she got out of her bath, the wine was gone and she was a little more than tipsy. She dried off as best she could before getting dressed in a white t-shirt and loose cotton shorts. She climbed into bed, grabbed her phone from the night stand and shot off one last text to Kara before falling asleep.
'Tell me we didn't make a mistake.'
The next morning she woke with a pounding headache and for some reason the room was much brighter than it had ever been in her whole time living there. She looked for her phone which was buried under the covers and checked it for any new messages or missed calls.
"Of course not." Lena mumbled under her breath as she got out of bed and went to the bathroom. She took some aspirin for her headache and then a shower before getting dressed and going to work.
Will knocked on Kara's door again greeting her with a cup of coffee, "Good morning."
"Morning." She said taking the coffee from him.
As he drove he gave her a rundown of the day and she half listened to him. She knew she wasn't being a very good reporter or colleague but her mind was so far from work that she couldn't focus.
They spent most of the day chasing supposed lead after lead but it seemed either people didn't care or they didn't want to talk. When they managed to get back to the hotel, Lynsey Kemp was waiting outside Kara's room.
"I know you said I could call but I just wanted to talk to you in person and see if you found out anything." She said to Kara as they approached her.
Kara told her that they hadn't found out much and that no one seemed willing to talk but she promised her that she would continue to investigate. They talked for a little bit more then Lynsey left and Kara went to unlock her door but Will stopped her, "Dinner at my place again?" he asked with a grin.
"Yeah sure I'll be right back." She told him then went into her room. She grabbed a few things and her laptop before going over to his room. They ordered burgers and fries from a nearby diner and while they ate, they went through their notes.
"It's nice to see you focusing on work." He said to her as he dipped a fry into his ketchup puddle, "For a minute there I thought I'd have to write this story and take all the credit for it."
She smiled at him then bit into her hamburger to keep from saying something she shouldn't. Honestly, aside from wanting to help Lynsey find out what happened to her homeless friend, if Will wanted all the credit for this story he could have it.
After their meal she helped clean up their mess then grabbed her notes and laptop, "See you in the morning." She told him then went back to her room.
Will grabbed his notepad from the table and spotted Kara's cellphone. Of course the right thing to do would be to take it over to her but instead he picked it up and swiped the screen. He shook his head, "Should have a passcode, Kara." He went right to her recent text messages, Lena was on top (of course she was) of the list and he read through the conversation they had a couple days ago.
The light clicked on in his dim brain and he realized that Lena was the one that Kara had slept with.
As if by some kind of voodoo warning Lena's smiling face popped up on the screen and Will yelped and almost dropped Kara's phone. Should he answer it? Oh yeah he's going to answer it.
"Hello? Who's this?" He asked knowing damn well just who it was.
"Uh, this is Lena Luthor. Who's this?"
"Oh hey Lena, it's Kara's friend and co-worker, Will."
"Okay." There was a pause, "Is Kara there?"
Think Will, think!
"She actually just hopped into the shower." He told her.
Nothing but silence on the line and Will grinned.
"Did you want me to …?" He started to say but she hung up. Will smiled then went through the call logs and deleted Lena's call from the history.
He went down to Kara's room and knocked on her door and when she answered he smiled at her and held her phone out, "Forget something?"
She took the phone from him, "Yeah thanks." She said and on instinct checked her messages.
"Night." She said to him then shut the door leaving him standing there like an idiot.
Lena was in disbelief as she hung up the phone. She knew Kara had to go out of town for a story and it wasn't the first time she'd gone with a co-journalist. But why did he answer her phone and why was she in the shower leaving him to answer her phone? Kara wouldn't have slept with him right? She wasn't the kind of woman who would just jump into bed with someone.
Lena's mind was taking her to places she didn't really like but she didn't know what else she could do.
The next morning Kara got up early and went to a small diner down the street to get coffees when she ran into Lynsey. They sat in a booth and Lynsey asked if there was any new information.
"No, and it seems no one knows anything or is willing to help, including the sheriff even though we left word with the deputy." Kara told her.
Lynsey was on the verge of tears, "I keep hoping that he had to leave town in a hurry and that's why he didn't say goodbye."
Kara watched the girl and then asked, "Lynsey, was Trevor more than just another teen you were trying to help?"
Lynsey looked up at her, wiping a tear from her cheek, "He was my friend but he was more than that but I didn't get to tell him and now he's gone and I don't think I ever will."
Kara slid in next to Lynsey and put an arm around her to comfort her, "I'm sorry."
Will managed to find Kara at the diner, "I just got a call that Sheriff Castillo wants to see us." He said to Kara completely ignoring the situation in front of him.
"Are you going to be okay?" She asked Lynsey who wiped her tears and nodded her head. "I'll let you know if we learn anything new. I promise." She said to her before they left.
"I'm not sure why two reporters are sticking their noses into the business of our quiet little town." The sheriff said to them as they sat down in his office.
"We're here because no one else seems to care that possibly 3 teenagers have gone missing in your quiet little town." Kara said to him with a glare.
"Junkies." The Sheriff said, "They were junkies who polluted my town with their drugs."
"Do you have evidence that they were all drug addicts? And even if they were, they've gone missing and you've done next to nothing to find out what happened."
"Listen here Missy…"
"Missy? Excuse me!?"
"How about we take a breath here?" Will got in the middle of whatever was happening to prevent a full on fight.
Kara glared at him then back at the sheriff. She had to keep a cool head but she really wanted to laser the cocky mustache off the sheriff's face!
While Will talked to the sheriff and asked a few questions Kara looked around the office they were seated in. She spotted a photo on his desk; it appeared to be him with his wife and son, smiling and happy. But Kara had noticed that the Sheriff wasn't wearing a wedding ring. Interesting.
They got nowhere with the sheriff, which wasn't a big surprise. He told them that it was more than likely that the junkies left to find another town to use up and trash before moving on again.
"Did you want to grab lunch?" Will asked as they headed back to the car.
"No. I think I'll walk back to the hotel. I have some work to do." Kara told him.
When she got back to her room she immediately opened up her laptop and typed in the sheriff's name. Plenty of articles came up, a story about when he got an award for bravery, when he was appointed sheriff, some tree planting ceremony. Nothing seemed to stand out till Kara scrolled to the end of the list and saw the headline.
"A town in shock as sheriff's son dies from drug overdose."
