Mai and Naru were waiting patiently by the baggage claim at the airport. They only had another ten minutes before Naru's parents touched down in Japan, and the gravity of the situation had just now hit Mai as her stomach started to become sour. She had met Naru's parents before, but not for very long, and before Ren was born, so there was not that much attaching her to the two of them. But now, she had two new individuals in her life that had not gotten to see their grandchild until now, much less even know about his existence. To add to all of that, she wasn't even sure if she was the type of person that his parents would want Naru to be with.
They would probably think that Mai was being selfish and keeping her son all to herself, but in a way, she was. She had to keep his existence a secret from anyone who did not need to know, unfortunately, Naru and his parents fit that specification at the time. There were times that she would stare at Naru's contact on her phone and debate with herself to just call him and let him know, at the very least, that he had a son. Perhaps sending Ren to live in England with Naru was the best course of action in the long run.
She sighed as the thought crossed her mind and watched as Ren was telling Naru about something while he sat on his father's lap. Their relationship was coming along naturally and without much work, thankfully. The two of them were close, despite the time apart from the beginning, and she was positive that Hina had ensured that Naru had sat through every video that she had taken of her and Ren. Of course, Mai had them as well, Hina had gifted it to her as a present and she had watched them all that night while Ren had slept and cried into the couch pillow reliving all the memories.
This wasn't right. She shouldn't be thinking about this right now, but now with Stone's presence, Mai suddenly had to think about the possibility of never being able to see her son again, and the thought alone was already crushing her. But, if it could truly be a possibility, she had to talk to Naru about it. She was sure he wouldn't hesitate, but she couldn't not speak with him about it. As long as Stone was caught or killed, Mai couldn't care less what happened to herself.
"What are you thinking about?" Naru said into her ear. He had leaned over slightly to do so but didn't have to move much considering their already close proximity. Ren had looked at her in attention too. She sent a silent curse to the deductive nature of the males she surrounded herself with.
"Nothing, just thinking," She said smiling at the both of them. Ren still had a worried quirk to his eyebrows but looked away to let his parents' converse. "We need to have a talk when we get an opportunity tonight."
Naru nodded and placed a hand over hers that was clenched tightly in a fist. Noticing, she quickly relaxed her grip and welcomed his hold over her hand by interlacing their fingers. He brought hers to his lips and placed a chaste kiss onto the back of it.
"NOLL," A booming voice caught both of their attention, and a sprightly Luella was at the front of the small group, the other individuals consisting of an embarrassed Martin and a cheeky-looking Madoka.
The small family stood up, Naru placing Ren on the ground but held his small hand in his father's. Mai attempted to retract her hand from Naru's in fear and anxiety of implying too much to his parents, but Naru gave her a quick glare and soundlessly dared her to try and remove her hand again. She sighed but maintained their current position.
"Oh, my sweet baby boy!" His mother chimed as her arms wrapped around his neck. She was shorter than Naru, thus forcing him to lean forward and into her. After a moment she pulled back. "Let me get a look at you," She eyed him quickly, scanning up and down, but her tunnel vision had obscured the two people with him. "God, you've gotten so skinny. Are you eating properly?"
"Luella, I think you need to let him have some space." Martin finally spoke up and Naru noticed him and Madoka standing behind his mother. "As you can see, he's not dead, so let us greet him too."
Martin and Madoka were given their own chances to hug Naru and Madoka was the first to notice Mai. The younger girl had done her best to push herself away from the family as much as possible and when Naru's hand fell from hers she took the chance. So, she was behind Naru slightly and off to the side.
"MAI!" Madoka pressed herself into Mai with the strength of a bulldozer, crushing out what air she had in her lungs. "I have missed you so much, you have no idea! Every time I see you, you just get cuter and cuter, lucky girl!"
Mai sucked in a small breath and after Naru growled at Madoka to let go, she was able to grasp back the air she had lost. Through all the chaos, Ren had placed himself safely behind his mother's legs and gripped onto her with tight fingers. He wasn't used to a revolving door of new faces and voices; Mai was always very particular about who he was around. While he didn't know why he trusted his mother and listened to what his uncle told him in his dreams. He peered around her legs and met the eyes of the strange strawberry blond who looked back with wide eyes.
"Mai, who is this?" Madoka asked tilting her head to gawk at Ren more, but the boy quickly ducked back behind her legs.
Naru cleared his throat and watched his parents. "He," Naru motioned for Ren to come forward and with a nod from his mother, the boy moved slowly over to his father, now positioned between the two of them. "Is the reason why I wanted both of you to come here so soon."
Luella's mouth dropped open as she stared at the small look-a-like of her son, the stare of the child different though, cautious but kind, probably a trait of the mother. The mother. She looked over to where Mai stood next to the child. A small burst of joy started in her heart and moved out to the rest of her body and tears filled her eyes. Never would she have imagined that her youngest son would be capable of meeting a woman, let alone a woman that he finds worth his attention away from his job, and then have a kid. It had always been her dream to have a big family, but sadly she was denied that wish.
When they adopted the twins, she was saddened to get them at five instead of an infant, however, they wormed their way into her heart very easily. She realized later, that she would get a second chance to raise kids, within limits, and be a grandparent. When she watched the young couple in front of her interact for the first time, she knew they would be a match made in heaven. It was inevitable that they would eventually be together. But this soon, and with a child, she was caught way off guard.
"Is that- Is he…" Luella could hardly get the words through her throat.
Naru bent down to his son's level and eyed his parents. "Mother, father," He started, placing a comforting hand on Ren's shoulders. The boy still looked uncomfortable and a slight blush overtook his cheeks. "I'd like you both to meet Ren, your grandson."
Mai flinched inwardly at Naru's ability to say things in a way that almost seemed callous. He was incredibly direct and Mai never understood how he managed to be that way, although, on the other hand, Naru likely couldn't comprehend her social outwardness. She watched with a worried expression as Luella kneeled to the ground and looked up to Mai with a grateful smile. They stared at each other for a moment and then the older woman turned to look at her son.
In a second a blinding smile lit the woman's face and a tear raced down her face. Ren looked on with concern and Naru watched him for a moment before speaking up.
"Ren, meet your grandmother," Naru said and then turned his head to look into his father's eyes. He rose an eyebrow at his dad noticing that Martin wore a knowing smile and did not seem slightly surprised at the introduction of his young son. Despite this, he continued. "And this is your grandfather."
Ren, not being raised to be rude, stepped forward and bowed slightly to the both of them. "It's nice to meet you. My name is Ren." The boy looked down to his feet in embarrassment when he realized that they were English. He rephrased his previous statement and held out his hand to be shaken. "Sorry, it's nice to meet you, my name is Ren."
He waited a few moments but never lifted his head up, and when no one took his hand, he started to retract it, itching to hide back behind his mother. Ren was caught off guard when a warm hand grabbed him and dragged him into a soft body. His face was pressed against someone's shoulder and he found the scent of the person's perfume was rather pleasant. Having seen it coming, Naru stood and stepped back allowing his mother and son some space.
"Oh, honey," The voice of his grandmother stated. He felt it through her body and she tightened her grip around his body. "Never feel like you have to prove anything to us, you are perfect the way you are. I am so happy to meet you."
Ren smiled into her and shifted, slightly unsure of what to do in this situation. His mother hugged him all the time but this was a stranger and he wasn't sure what exactly they meant to him yet.
"Father," Naru said after Ren backed away from Luella. She stood up and continued to wipe at her eyes. "You do not seem that surprised to know that I have a son." His father was bright, yes, but there was no way he could have just assumed Naru had a child.
Martin chuckled slightly as he took Ren's small hand in a light handshake. "I went to Japan about four months after the party we had visited when we last saw Mai." When she heard her name Mai looked up, almost surprised that they remembered she was there. "I figured I would stop in and say hello to her, she was just kicking off her career as an investigator. When I did get in to see her, I was surprised to see that she was pregnant. It didn't take very much scrutinizing to know that, based on how much she was showing, she likely would have conceived a few months prior. The fact that you didn't get home until the next morning after the event also solidified my inquiries."
Mai watched him with a raised eyebrow. That was Naru's father alright. They certainly acted the same when it came to their detective skills. It took her a moment to realize that Madoka was holding up her phone from a landscape perspective.
"Madoka, what are you doing?" Mai said. Ren came up to her and held his arms up to her, and she wrapped her arms under his armpits and placed him on her hip.
"Just recording this touching moment!" She tapped on her phone screen and put it away quickly before stepping forward and pressing a quick kiss on Ren's cheek and attempting to give Mai a hug. "So, good to see you all! Obviously, with Naru, I don't think that, but you and your son, I am happy to be seeing!"
"Oh, Mai!" Luella said snapping out of her distracted state. "Honey, I am so sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel like I was ignoring you!" She walked over to her and gave both Mai and Ren a tight hug. Right when Mai was starting to suffocate, Naru wrapped an arm around her and pulled her back into him.
"Mother, please don't kill my family," He said slightly irritated.
A blush caught on Mai's face and she stared back at him in surprise. Was he referring to her and Ren when he said that? Were they really a family? At the very least, they were the most flawed family Mai had ever known. Luella was the first of the three to recover, the other two companions looking floored.
"Wait, Oliver are you and Mai - " She didn't finish as Naru cut her off.
"We are dating, yes." He spoke. Mai looked at him confused but Ren looked ecstatic.
"Really?!" Ren screeched watching his parents. "Mommy, does this mean daddy is going to stay with us?"
Mai tilted her head and thought for a moment. "Well," She looked to Naru and he smirked at her. "If he wants to, he's more than welcome to stay. In fact, if you all would like, you could stay with us during your visit, we've more than enough guest rooms."
Naru looked impassioned and his family across from them were grinning like thieves. He leaned in close to her and whispered in her ear.
"Mai, why would you offer that?"
"Well, I don't see why not. This will be good for Ren, he can be around his grandparents and they can bond." She said handing off Ren to Luella who was about to burst into excitement. She vaguely heard Martin say that they should start back home and they moved past the couple staring at each other. "Besides," Mai wrapped a hand into his dress shirt and yanked him down to her eye level slightly. "They can watch Ren and we can have our alone time."
Naru chuckled darkly. "I catch your drift, you sly minx."
He pressed his lips to hers and she returned the pressure and opened her mouth slightly when his tongue slid across her lips. His hands traveled from her waist and moved up to the middle of her back as she reached her hand up from his shirt collar to tangle in his hair. They were lost in their moment but quickly snapped back when Madoka tapped the both of them on their shoulders.
"Sorry to break up your cute kiss-fest, but you're also getting a lot of stares, and most of them do not look nice." The woman said grinning cheekily.
Mai and Naru glanced around her and noticed the varying stares of men and women towards the both of them. Gulping quickly, she grabbed his hand and dragged him quickly to the sliding glass doors of the airport where her son and Naru's parents were all waiting.
So sorry that this update was later than normal. I, unfortunately, had a few tasks I had to complete Friday night and this morning, so I didn't have time to update. Anyhow! I hope you enjoyed this next chapter! I really wanted to add in Luella and Martin because I always had a strong bond with my grandparents, and I assume some of you are the same way! Just a touching moment before we get into the thick of things!
I will update again on Friday night next week! Until then!
Cheers!
