(One year after the Battle against the Beast.)
Delsin sighed as he sat on top of a building and wiped his forehead. He and Fetch had spent the morning chasing down a rogue Conduit with Light Powers. He'd robbed an armored car and the two DUP employed Conduits had barely managed to chase him down and apprehend him by using their Neon Powers. Fetch sat beside him and handed him a bottle of water. "Tired, D," she asked.
"Yeah. And I don't think I'll ever get a handle on that guy's Power. It's like if you and Eugene had a kid." He shuddered. "I'd hate to imagine that."
"Stop with the jokes. You know you're not funny."
"I'm hilarious. Regina thinks so."
"Delsin, she's almost 2. She thinks everything is hilarious."
"I can still make her laugh." Fetch smiled and kissed him before they downed their waters. She called up their home and smiled as Seryu answered.
"Hey, guys. How's Regina."
"She's asleep right now," said Seryu. "How was your morning?"
"Eventful," said Delsin as he stretched his arms. "Conduit with a Light Power almost gave us the slip."
"Almost," said Fetch. "Least until D pulled out his combo schtick."
"Nothing a little Rave can't solve."
"You sure you're ok using Smoke," asked Seryu.
"Yeah. Ever since Murasame broke in half and me and Akame kept both, the curse hasn't affected me. I just gotta make sure I don't scratch anyone with my Metal Power and I'm good."
"As long as you're sure. Delsin, Samantha called for you."
"What's the Boss want?"
"A rift opened up."
"A rift," asked Fetch. "I thought random rifts would stop popping up."
"Apparently not. She said since you have the most experience…"
"I would be the ideal choice to go through," muttered Delsin before sighing. "Alright, just tell me where it is."
"Don't get stuck this time, Babe," said Fetch. "Or we will hunt you down and castrate you."
"I'm pretty sure Chelsea should get a say in that. She's not as quick with that threat as you three are."
"Well she's busy at the moment. So we can threaten you all we want," said Seryu. "She should hurry if she's serious about wanting a kid."
"And with that, I'm gone. Can you text me the location, please?"
"Sure thing." Delsin kissed Fetch before Lightspeeding away. When he arrived at the rift, he called up Samantha on his DUP radio.
"Alright, Boss. I'm here."
"Delsin, thank you for this. Normally I'd have one of the others investigate…" started the DUP director.
"But we can't have someone who's Power may not recharge in a potentially hostile place. I know."
"Yes. When you first got pulled through the rifts, you were at a serious disadvantage by having two of your main powers effectively taken away. Thankfully, your arsenal isn't as limited as it was back then."
"Yeah. Think the radios will stay in contact?"
"According to Regina, the future version, they will. They were designed by whoever this Phoenix person you met is that let Kessler transmit through rifts. Just remember it may be possible for others to pick up on your signal so be sure to…"
"Maintain radio silence unless absolutely necessary. I know. I actually did pay attention."
"Good luck, Agent Rowe. And try not to get stuck."
"Hey, I know how to get back this time. Rowe out." Delsin turned to the rift after turning off his radio and cracked his neck.
"Delsin," came a voice from the rift.
"What the… Kessler?"
"You need to be careful. The Beast is alive."
"Dad?"
"This world is one similar to your own, but you won't find Conduits there, at least not easily. Instead you'll find the Quirked."
"Quirked?"
"Quirks is what they call their Powers in this world. The Quirked span the majority of the population of their earth."
"Wait, so I won't stand out?"
"You will and won't. I can't go into more detail at the moment, I'm losing my connection to this rift. If I get into contact with you again then I'll help you however I can but…" A moment of silence other than the wind strained Delsin's ears.
"Kessler? Hey!" The Mimic sighed before shaking his head. "Dammit. Alright, guess I gotta do this right." He called up the DUP on his radio and waited.
"Agent Rowe," asked Samantha. "Have you gone through yet?"
"Not yet. Listen. Kessler just contacted me."
"Kessler? Why?"
"It's Dad. He's alive."
"He's what?!"
"And he's in this new world. I'm going in."
"Delsin, no! Now that we have a potential Beast threat, things have changed. You're not to go alone!"
"He's weak! I need to put him out of his misery, Sam!" Delsin paused as he kept his emotions in check. "He's suffered so much, Boss. I can't just… his mind was extremely fractured when we faced him. He's broken after losing everything. He asked me to end it and I… I couldn't do it. He's still alive and his mind is more than likely deteriorating. Sam… please. And don't send anyone else. Kessler said this new world has most of its population with powers called Quirks. But he was also cryptic as he tried to explain about the world before losing his connection to the rift. He said I'd both stand out and wouldn't stand out. I need to do this alone just in case things go south, alright?"
"Delsin. Rift Protocol…"
"I know about the Protocol, Sam. All agents need a team of three, two going in and one remaining behind to serve as potential extraction and backup. This whole thing was put in place because of me going through the first rift two years ago. You put this in place in case another rift opened besides the one we use to travel between our world, Cole's, and Seryu's, and we needed to be sure there wasn't a major threat against us or if another Beast was making its way here. I know it because you and Fetch forced me to remember it so…"
"So this wouldn't happen again. Rowe, we both know that you have been making strides to start acting more in a team capacity, but you also still have a tendency to go halfcocked into this these things. You're not a solo hero anymore, Rowe. You're a DUP Agent." Samantha sighed. "I can't send you out alone with the Beast there, and you know it."
"Sam. I know it's protocol and everything, but if more than just me show up to him, he may start going berserk again."
"At least take your brother. He only responded to the two of you last time."
"Can he get here in time?"
"If we can get a helicopter to Salmon Bay, then yes."
"You do that then. I'm going in."
"Delsin, don't you dare…" Delsin shut off his radio and raced into the rift after using his Imperial Arm, 1,000 Elements Gaea, to switch to Smoke.
When he came out on the other side on a rooftop, Delsin looked around and grinned slightly as he saw where he was. In the distance, he spotted a sign with Japanese Kanji and saw multiple buildings with more kanji labeling them. "Holy shit… I'm in Japan! Eugene eat your heart out!" Delsin grinned before hearing sirens and a loudspeaker nearby. He went to the other side of the building and saw a group of people below. He watched as a young boy with green hair ran forward to a mass of what looked like sludge with a face shaped in it, a hand jutting out of its side. "That's something you don't see every day." Delsin leapt off the building and landed in an alley nearby before seeing the boy trying to pull out another boy, looking to be the same age with blonde hair, from the sludge as it laughed.
Delsin absorbed Neon from a nearby light and Lightsped in. Delsin lobbed a Stasis Bubble, lifting the sludge and the two boys into the air. The Mimic Conduit charged in and pulled the boys free before getting them to the line of people held back by the local police. Delsin stopped between the sludge creature and the boys and grinned. "Ok… Now that is a face only a mother could love." Delsin chuckled before speeding around the creature as a near humanoid face stared at him. "Heads up, ugly!" Tossing another Stasis Bubble, Delsin came to a halt beside a building and watched as the living sludge was suspended in the air. He slowed down time with Laser Insight and waited as the body slowly turned, to him at least, to expose just the right spot. Delsin grinned and hit the non-lethal weak point and watched as neon light wrapped around the sludge man, trapping him in the unbreakable bindings from head to toe.
Delsin shook his hand free of dust as he admired his work before seeing one of the officers approaching him. Delsin blinked as the man spoke to him in Japanese. When he didn't respond, the man spoke again, switching to English instead of Japanese. "Excuse me sir," said the officer. "May I see your Hero License, please." Delsin gulped slightly as the officer's expression grew stern and he stepped forward. Delsin took a step back and noticed that alongside the group of civilians were some people who looked like they were straight out of a superhero comic. Each carefully inching towards him as well. "Sir, I need you to please come with me." Activating Gaea behind his back, Delsin absorbed Smoke and lobbed a Smoke Bomb at their feet. Seeing the two boys staring at him as it went off and the costumed people and officer breathed in the smoke, disorienting them. Delsin grinned and saluted with two fingers before Smoke Dashing for the nearest building and started climbing up to the roof. Delsin gave one last glance down at the kids before Smoke Dashing out of sight and up to the rift, heading back to his world. He grunted as he got back.
He grinned as he looked around and found himself safely back where he'd left from. "Jesus, Del," exclaimed Eugene as he helped his best friend up. "You nearly got us worried all over again!"
"How much time has passed?"
"Five minutes. You?" Delsin checked his watch.
"Five minutes."
"That's 1-1! It's a stable connection!"
"Were you about to go in after me?"
"I was about to. You weren't responding to our coms."
"I had it shut off. Half because of protocol, but mostly so I didn't have Sam yelling in my ear. Eugene. I was in Japan! It was insane, there was a fucking sludge monster and…"
"Delsin. They're pissed." Delsin groaned as realized who his best friend was talking about.
"Shit." He said. He looked at the rift. "But at least it's 1-1. No time dilation between worlds. I can go back in. Find Dad, bring him home and help him."
"Delsin," came the chilling voice of the former General, Esdeath. Now going as Esdeath Schnee after moving to Delsin's world. Delsin winced and turned to face the former general of the Imperial Army of another world. "You're in a lot of trouble."
"And they sent you after me. Oh, they're seriously pissed."
Ten minutes later, the three Conduits arrived back in Salmon Bay and Delsin was met with the glaring eyes of his girlfriends. Fetch, Seryu Ubiquitous, Akame and Chelsea. In Fetch's arms was a little girl who had slightly pink hair and was reaching for her father, Delsin. In Seryu's arms was a mechanized dog who growled at Delsin for making its first master worry. The Imperial Arm, Hekatonkheires, who Seryu called Koro.
"Delsin," said Akame. "We need to talk."
"Where's Reggie?"
"At his office," said Seryu. "And don't change the subject."
"I'm not, this involves him as well." Delsin called his brother and asked him to drive over to the longhouse from the Sheriff's office. They were alerted to his arrival several minutes later by the blaring sirens on his new truck.
"Delsin," his brother, Reggie Rowe, shouted as a blonde woman, his girlfriend, Leone, exited the truck behind him. "Is Betty alright?! What's wrong?!"
"Yeah, Betty's fine, I just came up with that story of her having a heart attack to get you here."
"You… Dammit Delsin! I know Mom read you the Boy who Cried Wolf!"
"I needed you here fast! And you only ever use the sirens in emergencies anyways, so…" Reggie sighed and pointed at his brother before turning his hand metal and firing a piece of shrapnel at his shoulder. Delsin dodged and held up his hands. "Whoa, easy! That's police brutality!"
"Delsin, you and I both know you have multiple ways of healing that. That was a love tap." Reggie crossed his arms and looked at the others. "Hey, everyone."
"Ok," said Chelsea. "Reggie's here. What has this stalling tactic accomplished?"
"Right that," said Delsin. He cleared his throat and dusted off his vest and taking his daughter, Regina, from Fetch. "Dad's alive."
"What," asked Reggie. "Delsin, are you sure?!"
"Pretty sure. At least that's what Kessler said. A new rift opened up. Just before I went to check it out, Kessler told me Dad was alive and on the other side. Connection cut off before he could say anything more other than people have Powers called Quirks. Guys, it's a world where the people with Powers are the majority. There was a fucking guy made of sludge that looked like he was eating two kids. And now me and Eugene have established there's a 1-1 ratio between the worlds. I can go in, report back at regular intervals, and get back with Dad when I find him."
"Agent Rowe," said Samantha from Esdeath's radio as she held it out to the group. "You are not going there alone." Delsin glared at Esdeath before looking at the radio.
"Sam. Please. What if it was your dad?"
"My father was a self-righteous asshole who sold me to the DUP when my Powers Activated. Care to try again?"
"Come on! I agreed to join the DUP despite the restrictions it would mean for me. You've said yourself I've been making strides working with the other agents. If you want me to follow protocol, then send me with a team of your making. But I am one of the only two people who can get through to Dad and Reggie isn't on your payroll."
"If this is going to be an official DUP operation to bring in the alternate Nathaniel Rowe," said Reggie. "I can't offer to go. If this is an unsanctioned mission, I can take some time off from the office to go in."
"Delsin, you're going no matter what, aren't you," asked Samantha.
"Yeah," replied the Mimic. "I can't let him stay as he is. Not while I have the ability to do something about it."
"Esdeath can watch him," said Chelsea. "Frankly, I don't feel safe if the Beast is still out there and ready to go berserk at any time. What if he starts attacking worlds again? What if he comes here? Then Regina, Cereza, everyone is in danger."
"Chelsea is right," said Seryu. "I know I stood by you in your decision when we learned who the Beast was, but now we need to think objectively this time. You barely managed to survive last time and that's because you kept his attention on you and Cole so the soldiers could limit their casualties." She met his eye and turned to meet Fetch's before addressing the others. "However we can, we need to make sure the Beast is no longer a threat, how that should be is up to Delsin and Reggie. If any other Conduit gets close, we may end up sparking something that we can't stop. Delsin is the smarter choice."
"Arf," barked Mecha Koro in agreement.
"Delsin is too emotionally compromised," said Akame. "We can't trust him to finish things if he has no choice. No offense."
"None taken," said Delsin. "I know I hesitated last time, but it won't happen again. I got through to Dad right before he got pulled through. It was for a moment, but I know I got through. I didn't see any marks forming so he might have healed. The curse might be acting slower because of the state Murasame was in. I just wish we knew what his mind was like right now and what this world was like."
"Then allow me to provide some more information to put this matter to an end," said Kessler as a small, hand-sized rift opened beside them.
"Is that Kessler," asked Samantha.
"Indeed it is, Director Evans. The world the Beast has found himself in is a world similar to your own and the world Cole MacGrath now calls home with one major difference. The Quirked, the people of this world with abilities, take up 80% of the world's population. Ranging from anything such as minor levitation to size expansion and in one rare case, Power Absorption." Delsin blinked as he heard that last part.
"Like Delsin," asked Eugene.
"Worse than Delsin and more akin to the Beast. This one could extract entire Quirks leaving the original user drained of all superhuman abilities. But thankfully he will not be able to extract the abilities of the Beast. The two genetic markers are too different and it would take a combination of the two for the Power Stealer to do so. The Conduit Gene is only present in .001 percent of the entire population and no one has studied Ray Field science like the First Sons. The Power Stealer has been taking Quirks for three centuries. Putting him above the Beast in terms of potential abilities."
"Great," muttered Delsin. "From one Uber Boss to another."
"Relax, the Power Stealer has disappeared. I believe he is no longer among the living. But the possibility of someone else developing a similar Quirk is always on the table, meaning competition for the Beast if he's back to his old ways."
"And what would you have us do," asked Samantha.
"Simple. Be smart about this. Unlike other worlds with superhumans, this world has developed laws around the Quirked."
"Yeah," said Delsin. "They really don't like vigilantes there. I saved two kids from a sludge man over there and was asked about a Hero License. Can you believe that? A license just to save people. Then a few costumed kooks slowly started advancing with the police."
"They have costumed superheroes over there," asked Eugene. "Like in the comics?"
"Yes," replied Kessler. "And before you get any ideas of hacking your way to getting a license to legally use your Powers, their systems are more advanced than even those in your daughter's future. By about one hundred years."
"Systems should still be roughly the same as here, it's just a matter of understanding code. Amalia can handle it. She's a genius, after all."
"Hold on," said Delsin. "I was in the future?!"
"An alternate future," said Kessler. "I don't think you need a lesson on semantics."
"Then we really need to be smart about this," said Esdeath.
"Too many new people arriving is not something that can just be covered up," said Seryu. "They will probably notice more than two people suddenly showing up out of the blue."
"And Delsin has already made himself known," said Kessler. "Only one other can be there with him at a time. And use of Powers will need to be restrictive. This is, of course, unless something unexpected occurs. Baring that, nothing out of the ordinary should happen."
"Then we have three options," said Samantha. "Chelsea, Eugene, and Esdeath. Chelsea and Eugene both have superb stealth capabilities and Esdeath can scare people away from asking questions about her out of pure intimidation alone."
"There's also the matter of Delsin's complex."
"It's not a complex," exclaimed Delsin.
"Call it what you will, if you wish to continue saving people in the Quirked World, you'll need to get a Hero License to do so legally."
(Quirked Japan- 30 minutes earlier)
Izuku Midoriya panted as he made the long climb down from the building his idol, the World's Number One Hero, Allmight, left him on, and sighed. He'd never been more depressed than he had been just now. All his life, he'd wanted to be a hero and now his main inspiration for that dream had crushed what little was left of it from years of constant bullying. This was it. There was no questioning it anymore. He just wasn't meant to be a hero.
Izuku was so lost in thought, he lost track of time. It was only the sound of nearby screams that brought his attention to anything but his growing depression. He looked up and saw the villain All Might had captured earlier was loose again. But how… Izuku thought back to him clinging to his idol's leg for dear life as he wanted to know Allmight's opinion on his question. He'd noted something falling to the ground as he screamed in fear, but didn't take full notice at the time. Now this hero was loose, and it was all his fault. Izuku was just about to run away when he spotted something inside the sludge man. Or really, someone. 'Th-That's Kachan,' thought the green haired boy. As if things couldn't be any worse. Now someone he knew was being held captive by the villain. And it was his fault. The Quirkless screw up. The freak. Some would see this as poetic justice. Katsuki Bakugou had been one of the people who constantly bullied him on a regular basis because he didn't have a Quirk. Izuku had suffered more than a few burns from the explosive boy. Now he had two choices. Accept his Quirklessness and run away, leave this to the heroes or…
He rushed forward past a police barricade and to his friend who was currently trapped in what could only be described as tar. His friend was in trouble, held hostage and no one was doing anything about it. He didn't have time to think. He just ran, throwing his pack into the villain's face as he did. He tried with all of his strength to pull his friend out of the man made of sludge and quickly saw how futile it was. Instead of giving up, he just kept trying, only panicking as he saw his own arms starting to be pulled into the villain. He tried pulling away but realized all too late it was futile. He and Katsuki were about to be swallowed up by this man's body and taken hostage so he could escape, and he was powerless to do anything about it. As he closed his eyes, about to accept his fate, a bright light caught his attention. He opened his eyes and saw the man was lifted into the air by… something.
Suddenly he could see. Something had pushed past the sludge and opened it up, giving him room to breathe. He felt a hand on his wrist before being pulled out. Within the blink of an eye, he was on the ground again and by the police who seemed as dumbfounded as he was. Looking back, he spotted a jean jacket with a blue and white eagle facing him. The man wearing said jacket faced the man with the sludge Quirk as he and Katsuki gasped for breath. The man spoke and instantly Izuku could tell he was American. The man said something he apparently thought was funny before he took off running, trailing light behind him like a tricked-out sports car in the middle of the night on a dark street. The criminal could barely register what was happening before the man dropped a ball of light at the man's feet. Izuku and Katsuki watched in fascination as the criminal was lifted into the air and started floating. The American grinned before raising his hand to the floating sludge man. Light shot from his hand and hit the criminal in the chest. The beam instantly wrapped around him and he was dropped to the ground.
The criminal tried to ooze out of the restraints but found he couldn't. 'How did he do that,' thought Izuku as the man chuckled softly nearby. 'Does that light he projects nullify Quirks? No, if it did that, he'd be flesh and bone again, not sludge. Is it just normal restraints? How did he harden the light like that?' Izuku was pulled from his thoughts as one of the police asked to see the man's Hero License. When he didn't respond, the officer spoke again, this time in English. "Uh…" said the man before the police started scowling and most likely asked him to turn himself in. The man backed away from the police as the nearby heroes started moving closer to help apprehend him. Izuku watched as the strange gauntlets on his wrists started emitting smoke and stared with wide eyes as his hands started absorbing the smoke. The man conjured smoke in his hand before tossing it forward to the police and heroes. They looked down at it in surprise and confusion before it detonated and they all inhaled smoke. The man saluted to Izuku before turning to smoke and flying to a building before climbing up it at a rapid pace. Izuku Midoriya watched as he reached the roof before turning to smoke and dashing somewhere out of sight. The blue and white eagle the last thing he saw before turning around and spotting the hulking form of All Might standing behind him and watching the where the man had drifted away, a surprisingly grim look in his eyes even though the smile was still present on his face.
(Present time)
Izuku couldn't believe it. All of his hopes and dreams were back. All Might had seen what he did and was impressed. He may not have a Quirk, but All Might saw he had the heart of a hero! And now he was going to be given All Might's Quirk, One For All! His life had just made a change for the better and now… Now he really could become a hero! Just like All Might! And just like that man who had saved him without a moment's hesitation!
Once more, Izuku Midoriya found himself so lost in thought, he wasn't paying attention. So when a rift opened up in front of him, he didn't register at all that it was there. It was only as he bumped into someone that he registered anything. "Sumima…" Izuku's words were caught in his throat as he found himself with a pair of large breasts showing a lot of cleavage directly in front of him and several eyes staring at him. He panicked and hopped away in embarrassment and fear, frantically trying to apologize to the blue haired woman he bumped into. Then he paused as he spotted a familiar face. The man who had saved him and Kachan was standing just a few feet away and staring at him in surprise. Along with several other people, all of whom were staring at him.
"Er…" said the man. "Konichiwa?"
Delsin stared at the kid and the rift as it rapidly closed behind him. It was completely unexpected and not something he had been wishing would happen. Eugene bumped his shoulder. "That is not the formal greeting," he said.
"Oh like it matters right now!"
"Rowe's, Simms', Director Evans, Specialist Esdeath," said Kessler. "Meet one of the .001 percent. Izuku Midoriya."
