It was a beautiful summer night in the Feudal era. No humidity, the temperature dropped to the 70's, the moon was full, and the stars were shining bright.
Kagome smiled as she looked to the sky letting the wind gently caress her skin as she took in all the stars.
Living in modern time never allowed this.
Sure maybe you can go somewhere that the lights and electricity weren't making it hard to see the stars but what light didn't cancel out pollution did.
This time was more pure to her. Its kind of funny that a time where Naraku is alive is considered pure but it truly is.
She sees these villagers and wishes she could be that oblivious and free. They only worry about their family and whats in front of them. They have no concern about what
is happening in the rest of the world. Hell they don't know the rest of the world exists.
Kagome did though. She has been to other countries before and seen other cultures and seen how different the people are.
Maybe if the people here saw how different people are in different places they wouldn't judge demons and hanyou so much.
She knows they do it because they are different and they fear them.
Its a common thing for humanity. If it's different and we don't understand it we have to control it or destroy it. Humans are very selfish in that way.
Kagome finds it almost amusing that humans think demons to be the dirty and corrupt ones when humans are the worse their is. Demons and ones with demon blood are
actually less judgmental and more open. They have common goals and don't let something as petty as rumors or not understanding something ruin their day.
Humans think demons just kill. Well Yea some do but Humans kill too.
Maybe she should tell them the story of Ted Bundy, Son of Sam, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacey, The Black Dahlia... Then they can see how evil a human can be.
Growing up in modern times maybe helped her have more of an open heart and a willingness to learn and see a person for who they are and not what they are and when she
found out demons and hanyous existed the same principle applied.
Doing this allowed her to fall in love with a hanyou. Which she doesn't know is a blessing or a curse.
Her love for him started slowly and it grew and grew. She didn't even know she loved him for a long time. Not until she felt the cruel jab of jealousy from the situation
between him and Kikyo. At first she thought it was because she wanted him to live and not die. He deserved to live!
Then she realized it was because she not only wanted him to live. She wanted him to live with her.
They became best friends. Always knowing what the other was thinking/feeling, trusting each other with everything, and being so comfortable around one another neither hold back any part of themselves.
Her heart yearned for that half-demon and wanted him to want her too.
Kagome then let out a low sigh
Wishful thinking
He would never want her in that way. He cant love her when his heart belongs to another and always will.
She holds no bitterness towards him. The heart wants what the heart wants.
Hopefully her heart will heal and move on one day but for now she has accepted what her reality is.
Unrequited love sure is a son of a bitch.
Speaking of...Right now her love had gone to see his love. He had been gone a few hours now and truly no-one knew when to expect him back. Kikyo hadn't called him for
a while now so maybe they are making up for lost time.
Kagome didn't think about that though. She had no right to. He can do what he wants and she cannot be upset about it.
Taking a deep breathe she closed her eyes and looked to the fire burning in front of her. The heat making her legs warm since she was in some sleep shorts and a tank top.
Sango, Miroku, and Shippo all fell asleep already. She however, wasn't quite ready because her mind did not want to turn off yet. So she sat with Kirara who was still awake
as well seemingly enjoying the night just like she is.
Kagome knew she should go to sleep soon though. It was getting late and if Inuyasha doesn't come back tonight he will most likely get back at the crack of dawn making
everyone get up to start the shard hunt once again.
Kagome suddenly mused that maybe Kikyo calling him is a sort of blessing in disguise. It means they could rest for more than five minutes.
She frowned then. Ironically she would rather be hunting for shards with him while being exhausted than sleep not knowing where he was.
Kagome shook her head and tried to clear her thoughts. At this rate if she were to lie down her mind would keep her up.
She reached down to her side to grab the water bottle she had been drinking from.
The nights may be cool but the days were scorching and she sweats a lot and gets dehydrated.
When she picked it up she noticed how light it was and frowned. She brought it to her lips and made a small 'oh' when nothing came out.
Dammit she drank it all!
She elected not to bring plastic ones to this time for fear of starting something that wasn't meant to be started yet. This meant she needed to get some from the stream
just outside of their camp.
She slowly stood up and stretched her stiff muscles and winced when she heard a few pops.
Kirara looked at her and Kagome smiled "Stay here Kirara. I'm just going to get some more water"
Kirara yawned and slowly laid her head back down. She would listen for the girl to make sure nothing happened but give her the privacy she wanted.
Kagome made her way to the woods and walked a short ways until she reached the stream. Slowly she bent down and filled her water bottle back up and took a long sip.
Then she topped it off again because she didn't wanna have to come back.
She stayed in a crouched position for a moment just taking in the peacefulness of the area. The only sound being the flowing stream and an owl in the distance.
She knew she could make this place her home...If only someone asked...
Suddenly she felt a demonic aura coming up behind her. She did not get scared though because this aura was familiar. This aura was her hanyou.
"Oi Wench" he said to her already sounding annoyed "What are you doing out here by yourself?"
She looked at him then and shook her water bottle "Just refilling"
He snorted "You needed to do that now?"
She shrugged "Why not?"
"Because its dangerous out here! What if you were attacked?!" He told her thoroughly frustrated by her decision. He cant leave her alone for a few damn hours without
her putting herself in a dangerous situation
Kagome rolled her eyes "Inuyasha I'm fine. Camp isn't far away and I know Kirara is listening out in case something were to happen"
He narrowed his eyes and let out a 'keh'
There was now an awkward silence between them.
Kagome who now knew she wasn't sleeping anytime soon decided to sit down on the soft grass and just let the area calm her once again.
Inuyasha glared at her "Now what are you doing?"
"sitting"
"why?"
"Because I want to"
He growled "Wench..."
She looked at him and gave him an innocent smile "Yes?"
Suddenly she heard him walking her way and was surprised when he sat down beside her with a 'thump'
"What are you doing?" She asked him now
"Sitting with you so you don't get your ass killed" he told her not even bothering to look at her instead staring into the stream.
She 'hmmd' knowing if she wants to stay there any longer she would need to accept he is staying with her.
Normally she would be very happy for this but right now the awkwardness between them made this situation very uncomfortable.
After a few moments Kagome broke the silence "How is Kikyo?"
"fine" Inuyasha answered being short with her
"Did she hear anything about where a shard may be?" she tried again
"No"
"What about where Naraku is?"
"No"
"What about-"
"Shut up Wench."
She huffed and glared at him. She was just trying to be nice!
"Jerk" she muttered and bent her knees up hugging them to herself.
He sighed "I don't want to talk about Kikyo. It-It didn't go good"
She looked at him then and saw he had some sadness in him. Truly she wanted to ask what happened and what was wrong but she didn't want him to snap at her again so
she stayed silent.
To her surprise he continued "I told her something she didn't want to hear"
Kagome perked up a little then and couldn't help herself when her next question fell from her lips "What did you tell her?"
Inuyasha grunted and still didn't look at her. For a moment she thought he may walk away but instead he answered her "It was about you"
Kagome's eyes widened. "Me? What about me?"
Why would they talk about her? Unless Kikyo wanted the rest of her soul...Which she hopes not. That's where she draws the line. She will let them do what they want but
she will NOT let Kikyo kill her so she can live.
Inuyasha was making a grumbling noise and muttering to himself stuff she couldn't make out. It looked as though he did not want to answer her question but that confused
her because he brought it up.
Swallowing a lump in her throat she turned to him and sat on her knees "Inuyasha" she said gently touching his arm "You can tell me"
He let out a loud sigh and finally looked at her. Gold met Blue and they both stayed like that for a moment before he started speaking again.
"I told her that I wasn't going to go to hell with her anymore. At least not if I live through the final battle. If I die she can do what she wants but if I live then I want to keep
living" he told her
Kagome gasped. He wanted to live! "You don't want to die anymore?"
He snorted "I never wanted to die. I just figured it was the honorable thing do"
She blinked "Honorable?"
"Yea" he replied "Her life was taken because I couldn't protect her and was fooled so the honorable thing to do would be to let her have mine"
Kagome then rolled her eyes "You don't owe her your life Inuyasha. You didn't even kill her and she did essentially kill you for 50 yrs. Possibly forever if I didn't free you"
He looked down "I know that. Well at least I do now. I still want to give her justice and if I kill Naraku she will have it and if I fail she can take me as a consolation"
Kagome didn't really know what to say. That was fair she guessed but she still doesn't feel like Inuyasha owes her anything. What happened 50 yrs ago seemed pretty
even.
"How did she take it?" she asked him
He winced a little at the memory "Not Good. She asked why do I want to live when I have nothing to live for"
Kagome gasped "What? How can she say that! Of Course you have something to live for! You deserve to live just as much as anyone else."
He let out a breath "That's not the reason I gave her."
"What did you tell her then?" Kagome asked
"I-" he started then stopped and Kagome noticed a blush forming "I told her that-" he sad again in a normal voice then muttered the rest very low and very fast.
"Do What?" Kagome asked leaning closer pushing her hair behind her ear "I got none of that"
Inuyasha once again muttered something low and fast.
"Ugh Inuyasha I don't have demon hearing! Can you speak up?"
He swallowed "I told her you were my reason"
Kagome leaned back in shock. What is he saying? She dared not hope.
"Me?"
"Yes"
"Me?" she repeated
"Yes" he grunted back again
Kagome took it in. What does it mean? Does he want to be with her like she him? Does he just feel the need to protect her? What is it?
Inuyasha could smell she was confused.
He shook his head because he knew that meant she had no clue how he felt about her. It was time to swallow his pride...
"Kagome" he started reaching for her to caress her cheek "I want to live for you"
"To protect me?" she whispered out
He nodded "Yea, and for other things too"
She closed her eyes tight for a moment and reopened them "Wha-"
"Kagome" he said in a gruff voice "I ain't good at this. I told Kikyo I couldn't go to hell with her because I wanted to live for you and with you. I want to be by your side for the rest of our lives. Whether its as your friend, protector, or mate"
"Mate? What does that mean?" she asked him tilting her head a bit trying to wrack her mind for any definition of the term she may have heard before. Unless Inuyasha had
suddenly turned Australian she doesn't believe she knows.
Inuyasha mentally scolded himself. She wouldn't know what mate truly meant because she is not from this time and is human. Even though she has been accepting
and learned a lot she will need to keep learning. Now he just needed to explain it in a way she will fully understand.
"A Mate is like a husband but more." he told her
Kagome was beyond shocked "You would want to be with me in that way? I thought you loved Kikyo. I-"
He put his hand over her mouth to stop her "I don't love Kikyo...At least not anymore and never as much as I love you"

Once again she was unable to finish before being cut off by a now slightly irritable hanyou "Listen I know I can be a jerk but I meant what I said."

"I understand" she told him then took a deep breath "I love you too"
He let out a breath at that. He was waiting for those words. He was about 95% sure she loved him too but he also didn't know how much more she would take of him being

Then they had a awkward silence again. Now what?
Kagome waited for him to speak or make a move because in the past when she is the one to do so he doesn't usually respond well and if he puts his hand over her mouth one
more time she will bite it.
After a few minutes Kagome was about to move to take her previous position sitting on the grass when Inuyasha spoke up "I'm not sure what to do now.." he spoke honestly
'neither do I' Kagome thought. Do they kiss? Do they hug? Do they talk more?

She finally spoke up deciding to put the ball in his court "You can do whatever you want"
