Summary: Chalant fluff. Takes place right after Image but a little before Thanksgiving
Disclaimer: I don't own DC
Zatanna didn't want the team to know about her birthday. It had been less than a month since her father donned the helmet, and she did't feel she deserved a party. However, it just sorta slipped out during a girl's night with Megan and Artemis. The two told the rest of the team, who agreed to throw her a surprise party. Dick understood why she wouldn't have wanted one because of her current parental situation, or lack thereof. He was the same himself. He hadn't had a real party for his birthday since he was 8, when Bruce planned one that ended...less than stellarly. However, he also really wanted to do something nice for Zee, and he would be lying if he said he didn't really want a party for his own birthday. Deep down, he had started to hope for one, but he also felt like he didn't deserve it, and so he never asked Bruce or Al to set one up. However, today wasn't about him. It was about Zatanna. The team had Artemis take Zatanna shopping to keep her out of the cave while they decorated the cave. Dick had taken it upon himself to bake the cake. He felt that it would make a better impression if he hand-made it, and heaven knows he wanted to make a good impression on the beautiful magician. He had Alfred guide him through the process, and while he was no natural, he was still pretty proud of what he had come up with. Of course, Alfred took great pleasure in questioning Master Dick about his true intentions with Miss Zatanna, but that did little to discourage him from getting this done.
And so there Dick was, strawberry cake in hand, helping set up party decorations. Why strawberry? Well, it was her favorite flavor, if her lipstick of choice was any indication. How did Dick know her lipstick flavor? Well...he may or may not have snuck into her room while she was out to get to know more about her. Recently, his teenage hormones had been guiding a lot of his actions when it came to Zatanna, and he couldn't really stop them if he wanted to. Okay, creepy Bat-stalker skills aside, I REALLY hope she likes this...The team had just barely finished setting up when Zatanna and Artemis Zeta'd back. Zee's face immediately went from shock to anger as she glared at M'gann and Arty. Dick's expression dropped immediately and he watched as his perfect surprise party turned into a rage-fest.
"I thought I told you NOT to tell anyone this!"
"W-we just wanted to-"
"What part of 'I don't want a birthday party' did you two NOT understand?! And you took me shopping just as a distraction?!" Zatanna stormed off, and Dick felt somewhat awful and guilty about the whole thing. When he had just lost his family, he didn't want anything to do with his birthday. He had opened up more since then, but it took years. He felt awful about trying to force a party onto Zatanna, especially since Bruce had once tried to do the very same thing on him and it didn't work at all. But he also really wanted her to be happy and not feel like she had to punish herself for her father's situation, and this party could still do that.
"You guys just...finish up here. I-I'll go talk with her." Dick followed Zatanna to her room, and he knew she wouldn't unlock it, so he used his override on it. She growled as she heard the door unlock, and he nervously walked over to sit next to her on her bed.
"H-hey." Zee glared at him, and he was surprised by how angry she looked. Damn. I don't remember being THAT pissed off. Dick wasn't really sure what to say. "Uh, look Zee, we're sorry about...all this. I...I just thought that maybe you...I don't know...maybe you'd like it." Zatanna sighed. She didn't want to be stuck up for nothing. She knew her friends were trying to do something nice for her. The wound in her heart was just...raw at the moment and it hurt to try to be happy less than a month after she had lost so much.
"I'm...I'm sorry if I was a jerk up there. I just-"
"I get it. I don't really celebrate my birthday either nowadays. But I thought maybe you might want to. We really wanted to help you feel at home. Everyone did their best with this party. Meg and Kal went shopping for decorations, Wally went all out with the food, heck, I even baked you a cake for all this." Dick's eyes widened as he realized what he had just blurted out. "Uh..." Zatanna blushed deeply at this and couldn't help a smile. He baked me a cake?! Seriously? He did that for...me? Wow...just...wow. Dick was even redder than she was and seriously hoped she wasn't weirded out by it. Oh god, PLEASE don't be mad or anything! "Uh...I-I-I thought y-you might l-like it or s-something...sorry?" Zatanna giggled when he apologized.
"I-it's alright. Th-thanks. That was r-really sweet of you." Both of them were redder than a tomato at the moment and were doing their best to avoid eye contact. Zatanna was still shocked that Dick actually went through the trouble of baking a cake just for her. She would be lying if she said that didn't make her feel extremely excited. "I-if it's still an option, d-do you wanna go back now? I...I think I'm ready." Dick smiled and stood up with her. Seriously? That's all it took?
"Y-yeah. I'm sure e-everyone's waiting up there. Though no promises on the cake still being in one piece. You know how KF gets with food." Zatanna laughed before planting a kiss on his already burning cheek and walking out of her room. Dick gaped as he touched the place her lips met and smiled widely before following her back out.
Just like Dick said, everyone was still there and waiting. Surprisingly, Wally hadn't eaten the cake, though Zatanna and Dick suspected Artemis had to hold him back. When Zatanna saw the cake, she smiled and turned to a reddened Dick, who grinned at her reaction to it. How did he know I liked strawberries? Unbeknownst to her, Dick was thinking something very similar. PLEASE don't question how I know you love strawberries. The others watched as she blew out the candles and thought to herself. Had this been a few minutes ago, she would have wished for none of this to ever happen. She would have wished for the team to forget it was her birthday and leave her alone. Now, she would have wished for her current situation to get better, and to be happy again. But as she looked to the bird standing next to her, she realized that things were just fine as is. And so instead of making a wish, she just hoped that nothing about her current situation would ever change, because at the moment, with everyone in the room with her and the Boy Wonder standing by her side, she had everything she could ever want or need.
Sorry if this was a shorter one. I just wanted to get straight to the point and not drag it on for too long. I'll try to add more of a Zatanna/Artemis friendship in the mix since that's been requested, but I honestly don't really know where to begin. But I'll try. I've just been hinting at it here and there but haven't actually written anything solid on it just yet. Next 2 chapters will be more Chalant fluff. After that is gonna be a Dick/Artemis bonding chapter. Feel free to review and leave comments or suggestions. Next chapter up soon.
