Summary: Dick's 14th birthday. Takes place a little bit before S1 Ep 23
Disclaimer: I don't own DC
Dick walked around the cave, extremely perplexed. Bruce and Al had wished him a happy birthday before Bruce had to go out for League business, leaving Dick to go to the cave after hanging out with Alfred for a while and getting phone calls from Donna and Roy, both wishing him happy birthday. However, as he made his way around Mount Justice, he noticed that literally nobody was there. He had at least expected Wally to be here, since he knew it was Dick's birthday. They always hung out today, and even though Dick didn't ever make a big deal out of his special day, Wally certainly did. Last year, he had taken Dick out for lunch, bowling, and a movie before they crashed at his place and just spent the next few hours playing video games until Bruce called for him. However, Wally hadn't even called him today, and Dick was somewhat curious why. Damn, where is everyone?! Did Bruce send them out on a mission or something? Dick checked everyone's rooms to look for them, but couldn't find anybody. He went to the monitor room to ask Red Tornado where they were, but even he said he was unaware. Dick was genuinely blown out of his mind, and he was somewhat concerned. Okay, can't be team bonding since Megs never even asked me, can't me a mission cuz Bruce didn't say anything about one, can't be training cuz the training room was shut off and BC isn't even here, so WHERE IS EVERYONE?!
Robin made his way to the entertainment center only to find the lights off and everything was blacked out. The door behind him snapped shut as soon as he entered, and Dick tensed up. Alright, if this is an intruder, you REALLY picked the wrong day to-Dick heard movement behind him and flung a birdarang in its direction, only for it to go right through a party hat Wally was wearing. The lights went on as everyone yelled surprise before noticing the projectile that had knocked Wally's hat off. Wally was half amused that his best friend was so caught off guard and half scared to death by the sudden attack. Dick's eyes widened as he realized that his friends were all wearing party hats and had a cake with them. Hold up! How did they-Everyone quickly disregarded Dick's earlier action and rushed over to hug and wish him a happy birthday. He sheepishly smiled as everyone crowded around and engulfed him in hugs before asking the question that was plaguing his mind.
"H-how did you all know it was my birthday?" Wally smirked at him.
"Dude, you're welcome." Dick grinned back to him as he realized Wally must have informed them all. For some reason, he wasn't pissed off that everyone had thrown him a party. He was actually...happy. Damn, s'been so long since I had a real birthday. Kinda forgot how nice it is. The party went on smoothly, and Dick deduced that Alfred definitely had baked this cake and given it to Wally. He smiled as he realized Bruce and Al must have planned this in advance for him, and he was not mad in the slightest. If he was gonna have a birthday, there was nobody else he would rather have it with. Everyone got to talking with each other, and Artemis nudged Zatanna.
"Go on or I swear to god I will drag you over there by your ear." Zatanna giggled before walking over to Dick. Artemis smirked as Zee kissed his cheek, both of them turning red. Dick scratched the back of his neck, failing miserably to hide his blush.
"Happy birthday, Boy Wonder." Zatanna was just as red as he was. Dick smiled back to her.
"T-thanks. Y-you guys didn't h-have to have t-this-"
"Least I could do. You did throw me a pretty asterous party 2 weeks ago." Dick beamed and continued to talk with Zatanna, hardly paying attention to her as he was so zoned out whilst staring into her eyes. Damn, she really is amazing. Artemis was grinning like a troll as she watched. Wally walked up to her, grinning just as widely.
The party went by smoothly, and the next thing Dick knew, it was getting dark out. He had someplace he wanted to be, and so he snuck out of the party before anyone could notice, asking Wally to cover for him if anyone asked. As he looked back, he noticed everyone was far too caught up in their own discussions, so he was able to easily sneak away. The only person who noticed was Zatanna, who had been staring at him for quite some time beforehand. Where is he going? Zee knew she shouldn't follow, but her curiosity got the better of her, and she watched as he Zeta'd away. She went over to check the travel logs. Gotham, huh? Okay, I definitely should NOT go after him. He's probably with Batman doing something now. But why wouldn't he just Zeta to the Batcave, then? Zatanna Zeta'd after him, recognizing the alley as the same Zeta tube that Arty takes home. She and Arty had gone out for fun last night and had used this tube. Zee then noticed Dick walk around Gotham, glasses still on, with his head bowed down. She was confused. Why does he look so...depressed? Where is he going? She followed him through the streets of Gotham, careful to keep a distance so he didn't notice her. I really don't want him to know I'm stalking him. Why am I even stalking him?! Had Dick not been so out of it, he would have sensed her presence behind him, but presently his mind was on other things.
Zatanna followed Dick to...Gotham Cemetery? What is he doing at a cemetery? Dick approached a man who was busy locking up the gates. "H-hey. C-can I still-"
"Sorry, we have to lock up now."
"B-but it's not even that late right-"
"We do this once a month for maintenance and cleaning. You can come back in the morning." Dick's head dropped as he nodded and began to walk away. However, once the man was far enough away, he turned around and made his way up to the gate. Zatanna watched as he effortlessly flipped over it, landing on the other side. Okay. That's pretty hot. Oh my god, what am I saying? She muttered a spell to teleport through the gate before following from a distance. Dick approached two gravestones. As Zatanna squinted to read the names carved on them, her eyes went wide. Mary and John Grayson. A-are those his-
"H-hey Mom. Dad. Uh, I'm officially 14 now. Heh, so that's nice..." Zatanna watched as he started to ramble on about what was going on in his life currently. She decided that enough was enough. She really shouldn't be out here right now. It was an extreme invasion of privacy. However, she couldn't help but want to stay.
"S-so that's basically it. Not much else to r-really say, I guess. I, uh, I should probably get back. C-can't have the team realizing I'm gone. I miss you guys. Every day." It was true. Bruce was the best father he could have ever asked for. He was fantastic. Alfred too. Dick wasn't sure he would even want to give them up to go back to his Flying Grayson days. However, that didn't mean he didn't miss his old family. He always would. Even if his new one was, in some ways, way better. Dick was about to leave when Zatanna walked up to him.
"D-Dick?" He froze. H-how did she know I was here? D-did she...follow me? "I, uh, I noticed you walk out and I might've followed you here. Uh, s-sorry. I-I just w-was curious." Zatanna blushed and tucked some hair behind her ears when she noticed he wasn't saying anything, and she felt a mix of guilt and sympathy for him. Dick was always so strong and happy when helping her with her own loss, she never stopped to realize that he himself was still dealing with his own. Robin was always so happy and carefree around the team. Zatanna and Wally were likely the only two who knew what he was trying to hide behind his smiles and cackles. She walked up to him slowly and wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. Dick stiffened before returning the hug, allowing himself to smile at the gesture. They both parted, heat rising to their faces.
"Th-thanks. Uh, it-it means a lot." Zatanna grinned before taking his hand.
"D-do you wanna stay here a bit longer? I can g-go if you w-want."
"N-no, it's fine. Let's get back now." The two of them walked back to the Zeta tubes, holding hands as they teleported to the cave. Wally rushed up to Dick, somewhat confused that Zatanna was there.
"You good, bro?"
"Y-yeah. Yeah, I'm good." The team sat together in the living room and watched movies for the rest of the night, Dick and Zee not breaking their grasp on one another through the whole thing. From the Batcave, Bruce smiled as he watched the whole thing. He was going to call Dick back for patrol, but upon seeing him enjoy himself, decided against it. It's the kid's birthday. Let him have his fun. God knows he's earned it.
I hope this one turned out better than the last one did. Next chapter will be a Dick/Artemis bonding chapter, and then Dick/Megan bonding. Feel free to review and leave comments or suggestions. Next chapter up soon.
