Zatanna had to admit, she was scared out of her mind.
They had been dating for almost 5 weeks, and Zee was already sure that she loved him with everything she had. Dick was the perfect boyfriend, and she cherished every second they were together. He had even invited her to dinner with his family 2 weeks ago, so freaking sweet of him, and by some miracle, Bruce Wayne, the Batman, actually liked and approved of her for his son! So did his girlfriend, Wonder Woman! She had spent several nights over with them since that point, and it was incredible. Bruce wasn't nearly the same gruff, scary man everyone assumed he was, Diana, who was over a surprising amount, was everything one would expect Wonder Woman to be, Alfred was practically the living embodiment of Christ on Earth, and Dick was just...Zatanna had no words for the Boy Wonder. He was everything to her, and it was clear they had a relationship like no other. However, she would be lying if she said she wasn't nervous about Valentine's Day.
Dick was a billionaire, and he was the Boy Wonder of Gotham. He would probably come to Zatanna with some miracle present that cost a small fortune, and she would love him for it. Zatanna, on the other hand, was by no means a billionaire. She didn't even have a day job! So how the hell was she supposed to buy something for him? Never mind the lack of funds, what could Zatanna possibly get the son of one of the richest men alive that he didn't already have or want? A new utility belt? No, he probably gets high-end ones anyways. A jacket? Nah, he wears the same 2-3 jackets every day. New glasses? Maybe, but that's not exactly super-romantic. Ugh, this is the worst! Zatanna confided in her best friend about her predicament.
"What're you getting Wally?" Artemis shrugged.
"Honestly, I'd be surprised if he even remembers Valentine's Day. That being said, food." Zatanna scoffed. Yeah, no shit. Wally's easy to shop for. Artemis, who didn't know Dick's ID, was confused. "Why are you so worried about this? Just buy him a new pair of shoes or something."
"N-no! Why would he-" Zatanna realized she couldn't let on that Robin was a billionaire, so she shifted course. "-how would I afford a pair of shoes for him?"
"Uh, magic? You could make a billion dollars appear outta thin air if you wanted to."
"I doubt that's really moral. Plus, his shoes are high quality. No pair I could get would be better."
"New jacket?"
"He wears the same two or three jackets every day."
"New cape?"
"...where the hell would I get a cape for him? His is some weird-ass military level tech. Can't exactly pick that up from the thrift shop."
"Okay, I'm out of ideas. Look, you don't have to get him anything. I'm sure Rob's cool with that. He can't stay mad at you, and he has no right to. Heck, knowing how tight he and Wally are, I doubt heeven remembers Valentine's Day!" Zatanna groaned as she knew Arty was wrong, but couldn't tell her. "Now, c'mon. Let's go shopping for Wally."
"With what money?"
"I may have asked Ollie for a credit card." Ugh, if only I could do that.
Meanwhile, Dick was faced with a similar dilemma. He didn't know what the hell to get Zee, since she didn't seem like the type of girl who really enjoyed jewelry and he knew practically nothing else about what to get a girl. Ok, other than jewelry, what do women like? New clothes? Nah, that might send the wrong message if I get her something too...Wonder Woman-like. Besides clothes and shiny stuff, what can I even get her?! Dick had already asked Bruce what he got Diana, and he replied with "new holster for her sword and shield." Yeah. Real romantic. I guess it works since Aunt D's a warrior princess or whatever. Dick had come to the conclusion that jewelry was the best option, mainly since he couldn't think of anything else she might enjoy. Wally, who had miraculously remembered Valentine's Day, had already gotten Artemis a new pair of rather low-cut jeans. And THAT'S the wrong message I'm worried about. Bruce had actually allowed Dick to borrow his credit card once he said who it was for, he really does like Zee, and he was now walking into Gotham Jewelers, a favorite jewelry store of Selina Kyle's. Not exactly. 'Store' implies that she actually spends money to get the stuff in here.
Dick decided on a small necklace with a bright blue sapphire in the middle of the dangling part, which was conveniently already shaped into a "Z". Oh, man, I REALLY hope she likes this. Dick got Alfred to help with the packing and Zeta'd to the cave to find that Wally had arrived not long before him, holding his own "presents".
"Uh, Wall, just a heads-up, Arty's probably gonna kick your ass when she sees what 'gifts' you got her."
"Wh-why? It's clothing! Girls love clothing, right?"
"Yeah...but what you got is-nevermind." Dick made a beeline to Zee's room to find her rather...mopey. What's got her so down? "Uh, hey Zee." Zatanna did her best to smile as she hugged him, but it obviously wasn't enough for Dick. He had seen her genuine smile many times at this point, and her facade did little to convince him. Hopefully this'll be enough. "Happy Valentine's Day. I, uh, I gotchu this." A small part of Zatanna had wished he had forgotten to get her anything, but of course he was a far too asterous boyfriend to forget Valentine's Day.
"Y-you didn't have to-"
"You kiddin? What kinda boyfriend would I be if I didn't? Heh, even WALLY remembered to get something." Zatanna blushed as Dick offered her the present. She slowly opened it and audibly gasped when she saw the necklace. Dick blushed at her reaction and rubbed the back of his neck. "I, uh, I-I th-though you m-might like it. I-if there's something wr-wrong with it I could always sw-swap it out!" Zatanna started tearing up and put the necklace on her bed, turning around. She couldn't bring herself to face Dick, not when he had gone so far with his gift and she hadn't gotten him anything. God, I'm such a screw-up girlfriend. Why is he wasting his time with me? Zatanna felt a few tears run down her face, and Dick was worried. D-did I mess up? Oh man, what did I do? Dick ran up to face her and gently wiped a few tears off her. "Z-Zee? Are-are you okay? D-did I do something wrong?" Zatanna regained a bit of composure to respond.
"N-no! I-it's great! I...I just d-don't deserve i-it."
"Wh-why?"
"I...I d-didn't get y-you anything. I-I didn't k-know what t-to get." Dick sighed and let a smile appear on his face.
"You didn't have to. I got you this cuz I wanted to. I didn't expect anything in return anyways, Zee."
"B-but i-it's not fair! Y-you spent all this money o-on me, a-and I couldn't g-get you anyth-thing in ret-t-turn." Dick grabbed the necklace from the bed and wrapped it around her neck, before tilting her face up a bit so they were eye-to-eye.
"Zee, you don't need to get me anything, because you being here is already the best gift you coulda given me. No matter how sappy it sounds, I-I mean it. The only thing I need is you." Zatanna threw herself into Dick's arms, and he smiled a bit as he rubbed circles on her back, kissing her neck to help calm her down. Zee slowly smiled as she pulled away, and Dick wiped the stray tears off her chest before pulling her into a short kiss. "There's, uh. There's something I've been wanting to say for a while now." Zatanna looked into his eyes, curious as to what was on his mind. "I, uh..." God, why is this so hard! Just say it! Dick mustered up the courage to speak, and he looked straight into her beautiful blue eyes, almost searching for some kind of assurance. "I l-love you." Zatanna's eyes went wide as they both blushed and Dick gave her a small, almost guilty smile. Oh, man, pleeeeease tell me I didn't just go and mess all this u-Zee crashed her lips into his, pulling him close as their tongues played with each other. They broke off for air after a minute or so, rubbing their noses together and smiling brightly.
"I love you, too." Dick's smile grew even brighter as he heard the words, and he gave her another rather long and heated peck on the lips before hugging her, holding her close for a while. They eventually broke off, and Zee looked to him, smiling brightly. "Dinner now?" Dick grinned and nodded, eagerly taking his girlfriend's hand as they walked off to have dinner with the rest of the team. He felt like a massive burden had been lifted now that he was finally able to say those magic words. Their relationship had definitely stepped up a notch or two, and he was overjoyed. Zatanna stood beside him with an equally satisfied grin, thinking the exact same thing as she fondled with the Z necklace.
