Summary: Takes place around August of this year (2012), so 8 months after Auld Acquaintance
Disclaimer: I don't own DC
Robin sighed as he stood at the edge of a building in Gotham. Dammit, Zee. Where are you? He and Zatanna had gotten into an argument over something insignificant. Their argument had escalated, and she had gotten pissed off and left the cave for Gotham. He followed, but couldn't find her anywhere. What were we even arguing about?! Doesn't matter. Just...need to find her, now. Dick felt awful knowing that he and Zee were on poor terms, even if it was only for a few hours. They had a bond most couples could only dream of, and they rarely ever fought like this. He had to fix things. ASAP. Only problem was that his girlfriend was a magician and he was in a rather densely populated city. She could be anywhere.
Dick was about to grapple away when the Batwave radio built into his belt activated. "All units, fire on the apartment complex on 5th Avenue. Requesting rapid response. There may be civilians trapped." Well, might as well make myself useful. Dick grappled off to the fire, alone since Bruce had to deal with a Justice League meeting in the Watchtower.
Once he arrived on an overlooking building, Dick saw firefighters already trying to put the fire out, but he was tense just the same. He did his best to push his thoughts involving Zee to the side as he surveyed the situation. Better check for any civilians. He activated the Detective Vision in his mask and saw that the third floor was crawling with civilians. The doors had been blocked by debris, so they were effectively trapped. Oh man...the smoke will...I gotta get over there, now! Dick grappled onto the side of the building and burst through the windows to face the people. Alright, way too many to carry out, no time for the one-at-a-time approach, so let's try this. He used his line launcher to create a makeshift zipline connecting the third floor to a nearby fire truck. "Okay, everyone on the line! Go one at a time, and be careful!" The civilians started to make their way down, being assisted by the firemen from a distance. One of them was an old lady, and Dick knew she could not use the line. "Okay, this way, ma'am." Dick led her to a fire escape and made sure she was safe before returning to the others. He noted that most of the citizens had gotten to safety, but there was one woman who wasn't budging. "Ma'am, you need to go, now!"
"No! R-Rachel...m-my daughter! Sh-she's still trapped!"
"I promise, I will get her out, but I can't help her and help you at the same time! Just get out of here, I promise I'll save her!" The woman reluctantly left as Dick scanned the building with Detective Vision to find Rachel. He saw her on the story above her, and judging by her biometrics, she was a newborn baby. Crap! Hold on...Dick grappled straight through the roof of his current floor, knowing there was no time to waste. He burst through the weakened wood and struggled to get up and look for her. Damn, not my best idea. And this smoke...god...
Dick dropped to his knees for a minute, doing his best to clear his thoughts and center himself. He used his scanners to find Rachel and he ran over to her, picking her up from the cradle she was in. The baby was crying pretty heavily, but she started to calm down when Robin smiled at her and she held onto his tunic. He noticed she had some purple hair already growing, and she was wearing a pendant with a Christian cross on it. Huh. Purple hair? Actually I kinda like it. And I guess her mom's pretty religious. Dick heard the ceiling above him start to give out, and he covered the girl with his own body as debris crashed down on him. "Gah!" Dick struggled to stand, but the smoke was doing a number on his lungs, and the weight on top of him was rather large. Damn...guess I won't be able to say sorry after all, huh Zee...god, I'm so sorry...n-no. I...I can't go out like this.
Robin used every ounce of strength left within himself to push the debris up. He managed to make a gap just wide enough to grapple himself and Rachel out of, and after much struggle, he managed to stand up and make a run for the window. The fire was getting worse, and he could tell that any minute now, it was about to blow. With not much time left, Dick burst through the window, completely shielding Rachel with his own, rather small body. He flipped through the air before landing on his feet and slowly standing up to reveal the baby, who was now laughing and giggling. The mother ran up and helped Dick up to his feet before he handed her the girl. "H-here ya go, Mrs..."
"Roth. Angela Roth."
"Huh. I guess that'd make her Rachel Roth. B-bonus points for alliteration." The woman smiled before endlessly thanking him for saving the girl. "Seriously, it was my pleasure." The firemen started to clap for him, but he waved them off as he started to walk away. He winced in pain and gripped his side as he leaned on a truck. One of the firemen noticed this and walked over.
"Hey, Robin, lemme call you a medic."
"N-no. I'm good. Just a little foggy." He grappled away before any more questions could be asked and climbed up to the same rooftop he had been on before. He bent down as he struggled to catch his breath. Okay, let's recap: heat exhaustion, possible broken bones, cuts from glass, smoke in my lungs, and this killer headache. Oh, not to mention a girlfriend who still hates me. A lithe figure approached him from the side and muttered something he could barely make out.
"Laeh ym dneirfyob." The ringing in his ears stopped and he could feel some of his cuts start to heal as the rest of his body let go of the soreness he was feeling. He even started breathing more easily. He stood up slowly as he addressed his girlfriend.
"H-how long were you watching me?"
"I got the fire alert as well. I got here a little bit before you burst through that window with the girl."
"Huh, alright." There was a small silence before them until Dick blurted out what was on his mind. "I'm sorry about earlier, Zee."
"N-no. I'm sorry. I-I shouldn't have yelled at you so much."
"No, i-it was my fault. We shouldn't even have gotten into a fight over something so small. I'm sorry I pushed it too much."
"B-but I-" Dick cut her off by pulling her over to him and crashing their lips into one another. She eased into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck as his went around her waist. The pair broke off for breath before reconnecting their lips, their tongues clashing as they silently forgave one another and let go of the events from the prior evening, overjoyed that they were once more on the same page and beating with the same heart.
I thought it'd be kinda cool to add in Raven as a tiny cameo here. She is gonna be Damian's age when all is said and done, so her being a baby when Dick is 14 makes sense, since Damian would have been born around this time, too. I plan to take some inspiration from Titans when introducing Raven to the team later on, when Dick is Nightwing. By that, I just mean that I kinda wanna add in the relationship she and Dick had on the show where he kinda saved her and helped her find her place. Plus, that could be a way to introduce her to Zatanna, which makes sense since they are both sorceresses. Also, I got quite a few suggestions from one of you guys, so thanks for that. I actually already had a plan for Zee to meet Babs, that's coming up soon, but I'll add the rest of your suggestions on the list. As for another Dick/Kaldur bonding chapter...I'm gonna need to really think about how to do it cuz I want it to come off as natural and not just the two of them randomly sitting down and talking, so that could take a bit, but I'll add it to the list. I also am kinda overdue for Dick/Wally stuff and even Dick/Arty stuff, so I'm gonna need to add that to the list somehow as well. Feel free to leave comments or suggestions. Next chapter up soon.
