A/N: Hello! Thank you all for the wait on this part. I've finally got a vision for where this story is going. No idea how long this will be. Food for thought... and something that will help me in later chapters, if your favorite 1-A kids were to get a tattoo, what would they get, where on their body, and why? Thank you for reading. Please let me know what you think of this chapter and where you think the story is going.

Part 5

Best Jeansist: We got him. Fumikage Tokoyami is on his way back.

Hawks has never felt so much relief in his life. He slid down the wall of the hallway to the apartment when both the parents of Tokoyami and Asui were arranged to stay. Tokoyami was alive. Whether or not Tokoyami would forgive him for this incident is another thing. The most important piece was that Tokoyami was alive.

Hawks took a deep breath and composed himself. He walked to the Tokoyami apartment. He knocked on the door. No answer. He placed his ear to the door. No sound.

Hawks turned to the suit across the hall. He could hear the pitter patter of children's feet. "I guess they are over there," he thought.

Hawks didn't hate children, but he was intimidated by kids. They were so young and unpredictable. It was the one area Tokoyami knew more than him.

Tokoyami had shared with Hawks that children were often afraid of him. It has always been this way. So learning how to relate and connect to the ones that would look at him had been Tokoyami's saving grace in public. Hawks would take Tokoyami's advice every encounter with a child, and every time it became easier and Hawks more successful. If only the children would run to Tokoyami first instead of him.

Hawks knocked on the Asui door. Bura Asui opened the door. "Hawks! Hello."

"Hello. Are the Tokoyamis here? I have information for them." Before the woman could turn around, Fuhimito Tokoyami rushed to the door.

"Did they find my son? Is he alright?" Tokoyami's father rushed Hawks at the door.

Hawks remained calm. He was used to being face to face with someone. However, something of this level of personal nature was a bit out of his realm. The concern in the father's eyes, the desperation, what a strange look to see for the first time. He couldn't imagine what if would have been like to know that anyone cared in such a way for him. Except… now he could. Tokoyami, his intern, had cared for him. He had cared for him in a way that no family had ever had, and that had made Hawks weak.

Hawks cleared his throat. "The rescue team is on their way back with Fumikage."

"Oh thank God!" Fuhimito grabbed his beak. Tears pooled under his eyes. He turned to look at his wife. Before he raised his hands to share the news, something shifted in him. His heart dropped. He grasped Hawks by the triceps. "Is he alive? Please tell me my son isn't dead."

Hawks nodded. "He's badly injured, but he is alive. Tsukoyomi is one tough hero."

The grasp on the triceps somehow morphed into a hug. Fuhimito Tokoyami was now embracing Hawks. His body shook as he cried tears of joy. Hawks awkwardly wrapped his hands around the man. He knew when someone needed to be comforted, but that didn't make him the best.

At the same time, the two small children in the apartment began cheering and running around. The rapid movement caught Hibiki Tokoyami's attention. The mother looked around. She saw her husband in tears, lean on Hawks and her face dropped.

Before her heart could fully sink, Ganma tapped her on the shoulder. He handed her a paper he had been writing. She read the paper. A loud sigh came from her as she began to weep with joy.

Ganma patted her on her back.

"This is very good news," Ganma said.

"Does this mean Tsu's friend is alive?" The older child asked.

"Can we go see Tsu now?" The younger child asked .

"Yes, Tsu's friend is alive, Samidare. No, Satsuki, we can't see Tsu until she is out of surgery. They have to clear out all of the infection from that dirty knife," said Ganma.

Hawks sighed now that the weight of Tokoyami's father was off of him. Why was this so emotionally daunting? Hawks knew what was holding him back from any joy. He had placed Tokoyami in this situation. His own foolish, and emotional connection to the kid had thrown him in danger. He took on Tokoyami for the information on the USJ attack on the U.A students. The kid was also a bird. Hawks knew having his name on the kids resume would give him a boost. What Hawks hadn't calculated was how quickly he would have grown attached to the kid.

Hawks shook his head. He couldn't think about that now. "Either I or an UA staff member will contact you when Fumikage is able to be seen. I'm sure you will want to see him as soon as possible." He bowed and made a gesture to turn awa.

Someone grabbed his hand. Hawks was more than a little surprised when he saw that it was Hibiki Tokoyami, grabbing his hand. What was more astounding was Hibiki's other hand reaching up and touching his face.

A flash of red crossed Hawks eyes. Moments he had with his intern started to race through his mind. The first time Hawks really saw the potential in Fumikage. The first flight where he told Fumikage he wasn't living up to his potential. The moment Fumikage caught a pair of criminals with Hawks. There were moments of conversations and advice. None of the words were heard, only visuals. The final memory was when Fumikage rescued him from the fight with Dabi. Before Hawks lost consciousness, he was being held in his intern's arms.

Hawks pushed away the woman's hand. His yellow eyes dilated as he looked toward Hibiki. She was signing something for her husband. Fuhimito nodded his head.

"Forgive my wife. Her quirk can be… invasive. We are grateful to know that our son has such a caring intern," Fuhimito said. "We hold no grievances towards you. This situation is unfortunate, but danger comes with the hero occupation."

"Thank you," Hawks said. Before anyone else could stop him, the number three hero walked out of the apartment.

"Tokoyami, look at me." Aizawa sat beside the boy as they flew in the airship Best Jeansist ordered. The boy was severely injured and heavily disoriented. Aizawa was trying to get a clear statement from him before they made it to UA's hospital suit. Both He and Mic had made sure to stay by the boy's side. They were his teachers. They were familiar faces that he would hopefully trust and not attack like he had the nomu.

Tokoyami was in too much pain to move his neck. It made sense from the puncture wounds that resided in his back. The five holes were bleeding lightly. Tokoyami adjusted his gaze to look at his teacher. "If this is purgatory, please don't send me back to the abyss."

"Tokoyami, you are not dead," said Aizawa.

Mic nodded his head. "You are very much alive. You and Dark Shadow helped fight off the nomu we just faced."

A tear formed in the corner of Tokoyami's eye. "I have not felt Dark Shadow in who knows how long. I have not heard from him either."

"He was fighting with you. In fact I think he is how you were able to walk or stand," Aizawa said.

"Dark Shadow has been taken from me. I spent long enough in the abyss to see that. I failed them. I failed myself. And now fait reminds me of that by throwing me into an injured state for these hallucinations to keep me company for all of eternity."

"I'm pretty sure he was there," Mic said. "Do you remember fighting? Or at least getting out of the tube?"

"I remember being consumed in the green liquid of a tank. I thanked Dark Shadow, and then I have been alone in the abyss, anchored to the darkness I allowed to consume me."

Mic and Aizawa both frowned. Aizawa cleared his throat. "If you are dead, Tokoyami, then why would you be brought back here in so much pain?"

"I assume some form of repentance. Or punishment. I have yet to learn what the fates have planned for me."

"Tokoyami, I promise you that you are alive," Aizawa reassured.

Tokoyami was silent for several minutes. Tears began to stream down his cheeks. "If I am alive, then this life is truly cruel."

"Damn," Present Mic whispered.

"We are going to help you, Tokoyami. It will be okay." Aizawa rubbed his thumb over Tokoyami's head as he silently cried.

When they arrived at the hospital, Tokoyami became much more fearful than they thought. A fear of needles would make sense seeing as the damage the caused him. A fear of surgery made sense, especially after he had been beaten. Even the fear of an MRI machine, seeing how close to the tube it was made sense. But the fear that came when Recovery girl rolled in with a small ultrasound machine was not expected. In fact, he flinched when Recovery Girl came and gave him a small treatment just to try to help with pain. His heart rate elevated and his breathing was sporadic.

"Please don't heal me, just to hurt me again," Tokoyami gasped. "The darkness is enough punishment."

Recovery Girl asked Aizawa and Mic to step out of his hospital room. "This boy is traumatized!" She said, "I can't do any kind of treatment on him without a panic."

"The kid thinks he is dead," Present Mic said. "He thinks this is some sort of purgatory."

"I have a theory as to why he thinks this way," Aizawa said with a sigh. "Dark Shadow… it seems that the quirk has taken over Tokoyami's body. When Dark Shadow is there my theory is that Tokoyami's mind has to go somewhere. I think that must be what he is talking about."

"That explains why he keeps talking about the darkness," Mic said. "Dark Shadow is powered by dark energy."

"The poor thing is going to stress himself out and make it impossible to treat him if he keeps panicking," Recovery Girl said. "I can't even assess what damage he has. That young man can't stand."

"He did stand when Dark Shadow was taking control," Aizawa commented.

"Do you think that is related to his injuries?" Mic asked. He clenched his teeth. "His hands are black, like a nomus. What if his mind is starting to be nomu like as well."

"It's not like that. We know what it is like to lose someone as a nomu. Think back to-"

"Don't say it!" Mic snapped. "I can't keep my cool with that weighing on my mind."

"Both of you are losing the point of this conversation. Your student is horribly injured and in a bad mental place. I was hoping you would have an idea about what to do, but I think the only solution I have is to sedate Tokoyami so I can figure out the extent of his injuries."

"He's going to hate that when he wakes up!" Mic said.

"No, Dark Shadow will hate it," Aizawa said. "Tokoyami will be too panicked. Still, I have no other solutions." Aizawa sighed and looked at Recovery Girl. "I should be in there while you sedate him. No quirk activity will occur. Mic, find a place where I can rest. I should rest my eyes until Tokoyami wakes up. Who knows what the rampage will be like."

"Right this way, Aizawa," Recovery Girl said. Aizawa and Present Mic nodded at each other. Mic watched as Aizawa entered the room. He sighed. It would be a while before Aizawa felt comfortable at home.

Aizawa tried to keep a neutral face. He needed to remain calm for Tokoyami's sake. "Tokoyami," he said, "Recovery Girl said you have not been allowing her to treat you."

Tokoyami didn't know what to say to his teacher. He simply stared into Aizawa's eyes. Tokoyami knew there wasn't a logical reason. But if this was purgatory, and if he were to be healed, he would only return to the darkness. He couldn't explain how he knew. But if he was frightened enough, he was going back to the darkness. At least here, there were lights, and people. The pain could be managed. He'd figure out a way.

Tokoyami wasn't even sure what the big deal was. It wasn't like Tokoyami could fight. He couldn't even lift his head to see his teacher. There was so much pain. Surely if it were real, and he was in all this pain, and alone, someone would have pushed him into the medical treatment.

"Tokoyami, will you please let Recovery Girl examine you." Aizawa knelt beside his student.

"I can't go back to the darkness," Tokoyami said in a cool whisper.

Aizawa sighed. "I'm sorry to do this to you, but you leave me know choice." He turned to Recovery Girl. "Sedate him."

"No!" Tokoyami's heart rate skyrocketed. The beeping from the heart rate monitor machine was loud and sporadic.

"Do you see what I've been dealing with?" Recovery girl said to Aizawa as she readied teh syringe.

"Tokoyami, please calm down. It will only be a short while," Aizawa said.

"I can't go back to the darkness!" Tokoyami cried. Purple flames began to leak from his lacerations.

Aizawa activated his quirk. As his hair rose, the dark flames died down. He placed a hand on Tokoyami's head. "I promise you, you are alive and will be okay. We will take care of you."

"Please don't leave me alone," Tokoyami whimpered as Recovery girl inserted the needle. His eyes locked on Aizawas, strong yet concerned face. Though his quirk was activated, there was a sadness in Aizawa's eyes. With tears building in the corners of his eyes, Tokoyami's eyes fell shut.

Aizawa's hair fell, and his shoulders slumped, too. Recovery Girl patted him on the back. "I'll work quickly. I know that wasn't pleasant for you. You care so deeply for your students."

Aizawa stood up. "I'm going to find Present Mic. I need to rest my eyes. Let me know when he starts to wake up. I have a feeling we will get a visit from a quirk and not from Tokoyami."

Recovery girl nodded as she wheeled the ultrasound machine across the room. Aizawa walked away, hands in pockets. "When you are thinking straight you will hopefully forgive me, Tokoyami," he mumbled to himself and he made his way to the empty room where Present Mic stood beside.

Without saying a word, Present Mic knew to open the door quickly. Once the door was shut, and both heroes were secured in their private area, the pair were tangled in each other's arms. A small kiss was shared, and Aizawa plopped his head on his partner's shoulder.

"You need to rest," Mic whispered. "Who knows when Tokoyami will wake up and they will need your help."

Aizawa nodded. "Will you check in with Erie and Nejire?"

Mic smiled. "Of course. I'll call them once you have fallen asleep. "

Aizawa sighed. He was released from his partner's grip and laid on the empty hospital bed. He closed his eyes. He would continue to help Tokoyami in a few hours.

Tsu woke up alone in her room. It was night time. She could tell by the dark sky outside her window. There was a commotion happening outside. She heard yelling from a variety of voices. The voices were first just sounds, then something was clear.

"Tokoyami! Stop!"

"Tokoyami is here," Tsu whispered. "That means they rescued him. That means that he is alive!" She pushed herself up to sit, but a wave of nausea inducing pain washed over her. She groaned.

Of course, she had just gotten out of surgery. The knife Toga had used before was not clean, and apparently rusted. Some bits of the edges had broken off. They went unnoticed because Tsu, being a frog, unconsciously pulled her stomach up before it had been inserted, keeping the blade away from any vital organ. When her stomach had fallen back, the small piece hid beneath the organ, and was not detected during her first round of surgery. This second one, though soon after the first, was needed to avoid infection and keep taking care of any organs that may have been harmed by the hidden piece of blade.

Tsu was also attached to an IV and monitoring equipment. The soft beep rang in her ears every few seconds. She looked at the monitor. A long tube looped behind the machine and attached to the back of her hand. The needle was taped to her skin. A plastic nozzle with a red screw attached to the tube and needles. A clamp was on her finger reading her oxygen levels, and a pressure cup was velcroed to her arm, as well.

"I won't let you hurt Fumikage!" A gravelly voice yelled.

"Darkshadow," Tsu whispered. She knew that voice. Dark Shadow was always out in the dorms getting pets and scratches from the girls. It often shared what Tokoyami had been up to that day, such as what they ate for breakfast or the recent book Tokoyami was reading. Tokoyami would always scold the quirk, but Tsu had a sneaking suspicion this was how Tokoyami had become accustomed to opening up to people.

From the sounds in the hall, there was quite a struggle. Did the nurses not know light would calm Dark Shadow? Injured or not, Tsu had to do something. Her hero instincts couldn't let her lay there. She reached over and unscrewed the cap connecting her to the IV. Next, Tsu pulled off the pressure cup leaving it on the bed, and unclipped the finger clamp. The machine sang a loud, single note. Tsu ignored it. She grabbed onto the railing of her bed and pulled herself up.

A sudden wave of dizziness hit Tsu. She waited for herself to be steadied. Perhaps there was more than saline in that IV? Her vision was definitely a little blurry. As her feet hit the ground, she winced in pain. Surely someone else would come and take care of Tokoyami, right? The sounds of scuffling, and yells from Dark Shadow indicated otherwise.

"Maybe Tokoyami was unconscious," Tsu said to herself. "He could think he is still with the villains. That would explain why Dark Shadow is fighting everyone."

Despite the pain she felt with each step, Tsu made it to the door of her hospital room. She opened up the door and limped her way into the hallway. There she saw Tokoyami, facing away from her. He was in a hospital gown. Tsu could see that his hands and feet were blackened. Wisps of Dark flames were growing out of his body as he faced down two nurses.

"Let us be!"

Tsu was confused. It seemed that Tokoyami spoke. However, he sounded like Dark Shadow.

"Tokoyami," she called out in a weak voice. She was having trouble standing. She wobbled before leaning far enough to find the door.

Tokoyami's head turned. Large flame filled eyes widened as they saw Tsu collapse across the ground. "Froppy!"

"Tokoyami, calm down," Tsu whippered. She was unsure of what she said. That voice wasn't Tokoyami's but Dark Shadow wasn't visible. Her Paine kept her from dwelling on this fact. She slid to the floor.

Tsu had just enough time to look up as the Tokoyami approached her. There were purple flames coming out from every injured spot, including the tip of his beak. His black hands reached forward and scooped her up.

"Froppy is hurt too. Don't worry, Froppy. I will protect you and Fumikage." A low growl came from Tokoyami's throat.

"Tokoyami has never growled. He also doesn't talk about himself in the third person. Does that mean…?" Tsu looked at Tokoyami's beak as she was held. The purple mist swirled. It was clearly coming from inside. It looked familiar. It looked like, "Dark Shadow?" She croaked.

"Yes, Froppy," the voice behind the beak said.

"If you are here, where is Tokoyami?" Tsu asked.

"Fumikage is safe," Dark Shadow growled. "I keep him safe. They hurt him. And they hurt you too. No more hurt!"

"This is a hospital," Tsu coraked again. "We are here to get better."

"Then why is Fumikage so stressed? I feel him! It's not safe here. More villains here."

"Dark Shadow! Stop this!". A voice said from behind.

Dark Shadow turned enough for Tsu to see Aizawa sensei standing behind them. His eyes started to glow red. The flames around Tokoyami's arms disappeared.

Suddenly, Tsu felt herself falling. It was Tokoyami who was dropping to the ground. He yelled in agony as Tsu groaned with her collision to the ground as well.

"Asui?"

Tsu shook her head and looked up. A pair of red eyes were staring at her from the ground. There were no more purple, misty flames. It was her classmates eyes staring back at her. "Tokoyami?"

"Did you emerge here from the darkness as well?" Tokoyami's voice was much softer than Dark Shadow's gravely one. "Did the afterlife bring you here, too? I'm so sorry Asui you didn't deserve this kind of death."

Tsu's mouth flopped open. Why was Tokoyami apologizing to her? And did he really think that she was dead? "The afterlife? Tokoyami, we are at the hospital."

His eyes widened. "Didn't you die in my room?"

Tsu slowly shook her head. "Iida, Todoroki, and Midoriya found me. I'm very much alive."

Tokoyami's eyes darted from side to side processing this information. "But you must have died, because I have died. I died in the tank. Why else is there so much pain? Why else do I keep fading in and out of here and the dark purgatory?"

"You are not dead, Tokoyami," Tsu said.

"Then I really have failed, Dark Shadow. The darkness… it's my punishment for losing him!" Tokoyami began to weep. "I've lost my best friend. I didn't fight enough. It's all my fault the villains have him!"

"Tokoyami, he's not-" Ya was suddenly cupped by a hand on her shoulder.

"I think you are drawing bro the same conclusion I am, Asui," Aizawa said. "Tokoyami's got a lot to process. Just the fact he is alive is enough for the moment."

Tsu nodded. She looked at Tokoyami. It was clear he was severely injured. He had endured something very traumatic. But it was also shocking that he was able to move at all when Dark Shadow was in him. Something strange was happening. Tsu had a lot of questions.

"Will you answer some questions once Tokoyami is safe?" She asked Aizawa.

"Absolutely," said Aizawa. "Once we get you both back to your rooms, I will want to hear your thoughts as well. You're very observant, Asui."

"And you were hurt from this too. I'm so sorry, Asui," Tokoyami said, ignoring what Aizawa had to say.

"You're sorry?" Tsu was confused. Why was Tokoyami apologizing to her. There was no reason to apologize to her. "What do you mean you're sorry."

Before he could answer, the nurses finally moved in next to Tokoyami with a rolling bed. "We need to get him back in his bed," said one.

"Should we use sedation again?" Asked the other.

"No! Please don't send me back to the darkness!" Tokoyami begged.

"Don't sedate him," Aizawa said. "I will stay with him. Someone please help Asui back to her room. Then call both parents. I think they will want to see their kids."

The nurses picked up Tokoyami and placed him on the bed. Aizawa walked back with one while the other moved towards Tsu. Tsu didn't respond to any of the questions the nurse was asking. Her mind was lost in a bubble of anger. Tokoyami shouldn't have apologized to her, she should have apologized to him. Her eyes glossed with angry tears of regret as she watched Tokoyami get wheeled back down the hall an into a far room. She would have to apologize to him.

To say Toga was angry was an understatement. As the icky black smoke screen poured from her mouth, her eyes glared. All for One had taken them away from their new home. She and the rest of the league were in some strange place. The walls were bare and made of brick. What was most infuriating, Tokoyami didn't come with them.

"That was slightly disappointing," All for One said to the group. "Our eyes were a bit big for that vengeance."

"Some of them are hurt even more," Spinner said. "That has to mean something."

"We're hurting as well," Mr. Compress commented.

"Indeed," said All for One. "Not all battles need to be one to win the war. We will regain our strength on this island. View this as a vacation. You have earned a rest."

"There's no vacation without gaming," Spinner said. "Can we pick something up?"

All for One laughed. "We can figure something out. I need to get Shigaraki secured. Then we can focus on a supply run."

The rest of the group began to talk. Toga scowled. Her fists began to shake. Heat bubbled over her skin. "Stop! You missed the point!"

"Oh?" All for One said, turning towards Toga. "And what was the point?"

"Revenge! For Jin-kun!"

"You got your revenge," said All for One. "Did you see that boy? He may be permanently disabled. In Fact the boy may be dead and it's just the quirk that inhabits the body now. Such a shame. That would have been a fantastic Nomu to release after cutting the power."

"Jin-kun is dead! The Birdy boy lives! I'm not done!" Toga stopped her feet.

"If you would like to complete this task on your own, you're more than welcome to. I will send you back. You won't have my protection however." All for One walked closer to Toga. "Your free to choose. Just know that your choices have consequences."

Toga stared directly at All for One. Her eyes fuming with rage. "I want my revenge. I'm going to kill that bird."

"Best of luck to you. Comeback if you are successful." All for One waved his hand. The Black smoke poured out of Toga's mouth and within a few moments she disappeared.
