A/N: Hey Everyone! I missed you all! I've missed writing. I've been dealing with a lot of personal stuff. But I'm hoping to be back. Here is Chapter 7. I'm hoping you all enjoy this! My goal is to have Chapter 8 written by the end of November.
Part 7
Class One A had been on an intense lock down since Tsu was removed by the medical team robots. It was quite scary for the remaining eighteen students. When Aizawa had heard he immediately scanned the class for any imposters. He quickly interrogated them, ready to spot another fake. Of course, he started with Ochaco. Once the short interviews were done, they were instructed to find a way to identify each other in their own quick ways so that this situation never occurred again.
Now the class sat together in the common room. Midnight was with them in the back. She had turned away to take a phone call. Everyone was holding their breath.
Ochaco held her knees tightly. Mina was hugging her, trying to provide some comfort. Though she had done nothing wrong, Ochaco still felt responsible for the fact that Toga had appeared as her. She knew how this happened, too. Toga took her blood while they were at the camp with the Pussy Cat Dolls. Sure, she had stopped an immediate problem by keeping Toga from stabbing Tsu, then. But now...
"It's not your fault, Ochaco," Mina said.
"Yeah, Uraraka. You can't control what a villian does," Midoriya said.
"But she can so easily be me. There has to be something I can do." Ochaco hugged her knees tighter.
"Quit moping around!" The harsh voice of Bakugo broke the somber air. Everyone turned to see him walking towards his dorm room. He had paused on his way when he heard the others trying to lift Ochaco's spirits. "Change how you look. She has your DNA."
"Change how I look," Ochaco whispered. This was the first bit of advice that she had gotten that made sense. "Like what?"
"Tsc. I don't know. Dye your hair. Shave your head. Give yourself a scar. Do something. I'm tired of you sitting here and moping around for the last few days." Bakugou shoved his hands in his pockets.
"I need to change myself," Ochaco said out loud. "How can I do that?"
A spark came to Mina's eyes. She gasped with excitement. "Ochaco, go to my room. I got an idea."
Ochaco's brown eyes brightened. There was finally some reassurance. She could do something. "Okay Mina."
She made her way to Mina's room. It was just as wild and bright as Mina. pink animal print filled the space. It felt so weird to be in her classmate's room alone. She took a seat at Mina's desk and waited. It wasn't long until MIna arrived. She held in her hands a large Bottle of bleach. Kirishima followed behind with rubber gloves and a large container of red hair dye.
"No way could Toga dye her hair every time she changes you," Mina said with a big smile!
"And don't worry, you won't be red like me," Kirishima said as he shook the bottles in his hands, "Mina knows how to make it a nice pink.
Ochaco nodded. "That's fantastic!" Tears leaked from her eyes. It was such a relief. Finally she was able to do something.
Hawks stared out the window at the UA Hospital building. He was in an office UA often left open for visitors. The large oak desk was smooth and cool. Two stacks of paper sat piled on the surface in front of him. Hawks had been signing and filling out all the forms needed for the invasion on the old military center. He had been in touch with Best Jeanist. He dropped the pen and propped his chin up on his fist and sighed. Since the police were doing a thorough investigation of his agency, as well as keeping the place on watch for anyone related to the league to try and stop by, the place Hawks had to do any of the work was the office UA provided for him.
Hawks didn't really care that he couldn't be at the agency. His wings would need a few more days to grow back. Besides, he still had burns healing, and he had just recently gotten off of the auto text machine so his voice was still a bit hoarse. His physical wounds were not what was keeping him from being productive.
Since his visit to the Tokoyamis, Hawks could only think about the visions he had seen due to Hibiki's quirk. The last vision, when was being held in his intern's arms, repeated over and over in his mind. He had reflected on that moment. He was severely injured. And despite all the injuries, when Tsukoyomi picked him up in his arms, Hawks knew in his heart he felt a safety and security he had never felt. He knew he was safe. Even when Dabi was chasing after them, even when he hit his head. Tsukoyomi was going to keep him safe. He couldn't deny his feelings. Hawks cared for the boy. He felt loved, and Hawks realized that he probably shared a love for his intern as well. But was that love inappropriate
He had contacted the Hero Public Safety Commission to get information on the woman. Turns out, her quirk has quite a record. She worked heavily with the judicial system. Transcripts of what she had seen were aligned with witness statements in a variety of court cases. She could tell emotions in the moment as well.
When Hawks learned that she could see and feel what he did as well, his heart could have stopped. That moment where he was in in Fumikage's arms was unique. For the first time, he knew someone loved him. For the first time, he had someone that cared for his own well being. Even Hawks' own mother had never shown that kind of care. Did Hibiki know this? Did she understand how Hawks felt for Fumikage? Would she tell if Hawks' feelings were inappropriate? Or was she just grateful Fumikage was alive?
Hawks was clear of only one thing, he felt guilty. He had placed his intern in harm's way. He had let the league know how he felt. And the only time he could really think he had exposed this, was his battle with Dabi. He had just killed twice. Hawks knew he didn't have the strength to battle Dabi. He had accepted defeat. Then, he heard his name, and was suddenly comforted by a large dark cloth patting out the flames. When Fumikage held him in that moment, Hawks felt more hope than he had ever had in any point in his life. Dabi must have seen this. He knew Hawks was close to the boy. And now, Hawks questioned if his own feelings crossed a line. He had never had someone to care fore in such a manner.
Ring! Ring!
Hawks shook his head as his phone rang. All his thoughts moved out momentarily as he composed himself for a phone call from Best Jeanist.
"Aye O," he said into the phone as cheerfully as he could muster.
"Hawks, I heard you rejected the assistance of my sidekicks to complete the paperwork?" Best Jeanist was always straight to the point.
"Yeah, don't worry, BJ. It's nice to have something I can do. I've been feeling rather useless and bored. It's almost done anyway."
"Fine." Best Jeanist sighed. He knew he wouldn't convince this youth. "How is your intern doing?"
Hawks' eyes widened at this question. "I'm not sure. I haven't seen him."
"You haven't seen him yet?" Best Jeanist was baffled. "Is he too injured for visitors? I knew he was in poor condition, but not that poor."
Hawks gritted his teeth. "No, I think his parents have seen him. I just haven't gone over. I've just been working on this paperwork," he said with a half laugh.
"Surely you plan to see the kid soon," Best Jeanist inquired. "He is that injured because of you. You owe him an apology."
"The fact it's my fault is why I don't want to go over there," Hawks admitted.
"A guilty conscience is no reason to not see him. That boy admires you. Don't you care?"
"That's the problem. I care too much!"
"Hawks?"
"I've never cared about anyone the way I care for Tsukoyomi." Hawks didn't know why he was confiding so much in the other hero.
"This is starting to sound unprofessional, Hawks."
"I've been wondering that same thing, B.J." Hawks heard the breathing stop on the other end of the phone. Maybe he should have kept this thought to himself.
"Are you certain about these feelings?" Best Jeanist asked.
"No. That's half the problem."
Best Jeanist hummed. "Then perhaps you should keep these feelings to yourself until it is sorted out."
"That's why I've been staying away." Hawks sighed. "I'm going to get back to that paperwork."
"Please, still go visit the boy once you finish. Regardless of what your feelings are, you should show your face to him." Best Jeanist hung up.
Hawks ran his fingers through his hair. "Damn it! Why do you have to make things so complicated, Fumikage?" He shook his head, picked the pen back up and went back to filling out the paperwork. He just had to keep his mind occupied. Hawks just needed to stop thinking about how much regret he had for putting Tsukoyomi in harm's way.
"Just close your eyes, ribbit. I will talk to you the entire time." Tsu meant well as she tried to calm Fumikage down.
He knew she was trying to help, but it didn't make the pain nor the fear vanish. The bleeding from his beak had become worse. A nurse came in and gave him some morphine, but the immediate area needed to be numbed. Recovery Girl had been working on reconstructing the beak part Fumikage had lost. She used the original Hawks was sent to get the correct shape and size.
Fumikage now had to have the new piece attached to his current beak. With so many nerves exposed and the constant blood flow, it was not going to be a simple procedure. They needed to stop the bleeding, provide a new layer of tissue, and attach the beach securely.
This involved needles; and Fumikage was realizing what a horrible new fear he had of the tiny items. It wasn't the pain he feared, though that certainly did not help in any manner. He feared what was in them. The last needles that went in him were to transform him into a nomu, not he was supposed to trust that all these new random people were of good intention. It was rather difficult.
The option to sedate him was there, but the fear of being thrusted back into the lone void of darkness was another new fear. Having Tsu as a roommate was actually easing his mind somewhat. Though he was constantly alone with his thoughts, he knew he wasn't alone in the room.
"Asui, come closer and sit here to make sure Tokoyami can hear you," Recovery Girl called. She pointed to a spot beside Fumikage's bed.
Tsu cautiously moved herself into the wheelchair by her bed. She wheeled herself over to the spot and sat down. Tsu had never watched a surgery before. It seemed so strange that they were going to conscientiously sedate Tokoyami. No one wanted to have to deal with Dark Shadow. If Tsu couldn't keep him calm, Eraserhead was going to be called in, and he needed a break.
Fumikage couldn't close his eyes. Instead his eyes continued to dart about at each of the doctors and nurses surrounding him. It was getting claustrophobic. He wanted to call out, but there were so many nurses and doctors circling around his beak. He was asked not to speak and they applied pressure to stop the bleeding. It hurt but he held still. All he could do was call out to the nothing in his mind. God, did he miss Dark Shadow! Dark Shadow would be reassuring him, comforting him, reminding him it would be okay.
"Ribbit, it will be okay." A hand grabbed his. And then a second one was on top. It took Fumikage a few seconds to realize that it was Tsu holding his hands.
"Squeeze my hand when you get scared," Tsu instructed. She gave his hands to quick squeezes.
Tokoyami squeezed her hand. He was still tense, but he could tell there was someone else there. He wasn't alone with the doctor.
"This reminds me of the time I took my brother on the train for the first time," Tsu said. "Samidare was about to turn five. My mom was far into her pregnancy with Satsuki. She was on bedrest at this point. I was in charge of my brother and getting my mom what she needed because my dad was at work."
As Tsu talked, Recovery Girl moved fast and inserted a shot of anestesia into his beak. Fumikage squeezed Tsu's hand with all his strength. He didn't want to go away. He didn't want more time alone in the darkness, but he also wanted to escape this moment so badly.
"Great job, Tokoyami," praised Recovery Girl. "That should be the part of this you feel. I promise to move quickly."
"Fumikage, what did my mother ask me to pick up?" Tsu asked.
Fumikage's eyes darted to Tsu. Her face was neutral as she patted his hand. Did she expect him to answer? He wasn't supposed to talk. Besides, he had lost focus on what Tsu was saying when he had received the shot.
"We were to go get bread and eggs," Tsu said. "My brother was very scared at the time. He clung to my side as we walked to the train. He was amazed I knew where I was going. Probably because He hadn't really figured out how to read. He squeezed my hand the entire time we were on the train. Even when we were both sitting, he had a death grip on me. I still tease him about that. Especially since he now runs small errands like this with my sister, Satsuki."
Tsu continued to ramble about her family. It was one of the few things she knew she could talk about without much thought. She understood why Recovery Girl had her beside the bed. It wasn't to watch the beak get surgically attached, though she saw all of that and felt quite queasy from it. Her role was to distract Tokoyami so Dark Shadow didn't come. This is why they couldn't sedate him, which Tsu had other worries with. It was mostly through the main shot of anesthetics that there was the most cause for concern. That part was going to hurt. But if Tokoyami could stay around through the pain, then she was happy to talk to him as they finished the process. In total, it was about a forty five minute process, and Fumikage was awake the entire time.
"Try not to move your head around too much," Recovery Girl said to Fumikage once the procedure was over. "You still have a fair bit of numbness in this area, but you should be fine for the most part. Do you have any questions?"
Fumikage stared at Recovery Girl with amazement. "It's done?"
She nodded her head. "Yes. You should be able to talk, but once the anesthesia wears off you may want to slow down. I'm not sure how much it will impact your speech, but you may be sore."
"Okay."
"Thank you, Asui, for your help. Your stories about your family seemed to have been an excellent distraction." Recovery Girl nodded to Tsu, who had moved back to her bed.
"Ribbit, I'm happy to help," Tsu said.
"Either myself, or a nurse will be back to check on you, Fumikage. Rest up." Recovery Girl left the room.
"Thank you, Tsu," Tokoyami said as soon as the door closed.
"You're welcome, ribbit." Tsu said.
Several minutes of silence passed. Tokoyami was distracted by his beak. He lifted his hand to the tip and gently ran his head over the prosthetic. He couldn't feel his hand. He could feel the swollen edge and the thin wire that tied the pieces together loop about.
"Does it look alright?" He asked. "Or does it look like I'm a…" He didn't say the next part out loud. "Nomu" he thought, finishing the sentence. A twinge of guilt picked at his heart. He should not be here. He should be grateful to be alive. Instead, he has focused so much of his frustration into pain.
"It looks fine, ribbit."
Tsu answered so instantly that Tokoyami flinched. He would have thought she would have had to take a moment to conjure up the words. This was Tsu. The classmate who was very blunt. She knew what she was going to say and didn't always care about the feelings anyone would have.
"It looks like you may have a scar from this," Tsu added.
"Scars are a lesser concern to me," Tokoyami replied. "I already have so many. They are going to be something to live with."
Tsu opened her mouth to speak, when the sound of a try dropping outside their room filled the air. There were muffled noises. Someone clearly said to stay away from their room number.
Someone stood at the door and waved the nurses off. The door opened.
Red wings entered before anything else. Tokoyami's eyes widened. "Hawks?" He whispered.
"Tsukoyomi," Hawks said, walking in the room backwards and closing the door. "Sorry, I hadn't had an opportunity to come visit you sooner."
Tokoyami's eyes were watering before he could realize it. He couldn't think what to say. Hawks had finally come to see him.
"They said you had some work done," Hawks said with a closed eye grin. Hawks opened his eyes. His pupils shrank when he saw his mentee. Tokoyami's beak tip was the least of the concerns. Hawks could see where it was attached; the swollen tissue gave that away. He had been prepared for that injury. Hawks wasn't prepared for the bruised skin. He wasn't prepared to see Tokoyami's hands blackened from the nomu process. What torture had this kid been through?
Tokoyami hung his head. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry? Why are you sorry?" Hawks asked. "I should be apologizing to you, kid."
"I have failed you."
Tokoyami's words hung in the air. Hawks hitched his breathing. This kid just had surgery on his beak. How were his first words to his mentor an apology?
"No, I failed you, Tsukoyami." Hawks' eyes went to the floor. "You were put in a dangerous situation because of me. I'm grateful you fought for your survival."
"I didn't fight." Tears began to bubble down Tokoyami's face. "I gave up. Dark Shadow didn't."
Black and purple flames began to lick the skin on Tokoyami's arms. Hawks saw his pupil's eyes change to a yellow glow.
"You!" The harsh voice of the Dark Shadow shouted from Tokoyami's beak. Tokoyami kept forward.
Hawks was stunned by how fast Tokoyami moved. One second he was sitting up in bed, the next he had a black hand around Hawks' neck. The winged hero was now pinned against the wall.
"Dark Shadow, stop!"
Hawks' eyes darted across the room to Tsu. "I didn't realize someone else was in the room!" He thought.
"He caused this! He is the reason Tokoyami is in so much pain! I heard those villains laughing. They said this was revenge for what he had done." Dark Shadow began to tighten his grip on Hawks neck.
"Dark Shadow, Fumikage just had surgery on his beak. You promised You wouldn't act up. He needs to keep his beak calm. You need to take care of Fumikage's body!" Tsu wobbled beside Dark Shadow. She had her hand on her stomach, but moved on her two feet. "Please stop fighting for Fumikage's sake."
Dark Shadow growled. He stared into Tsu's eyes intensely. Tsu stared back with sincere concern. The black hand removed itself from Hawks' neck.
Hawks gasped as he grabbed his throat. He dropped to his knees. He looked up at Tokoyami, who appeared to be possessed by Dark Shadow. "I mean no harm. I came to apologize."
"Your apology is wasted on me, Hawks." Dark Shadow loomed over the hero. "You should have been there for Fumikage. Fumikage and I saved you! And in return, you left Fumikage to the wolves! He fought as long as he could! And you know what he was worried about? He worried about failing you! And when he couldn't fight anymore, he apologized to you and then he apologized to me. You weren't there to keep him alive. I was!"
Tsu placed a hand on Fumikage's shoulder. "Please Dark Shadow, just get back in the bed. I said I would handle anything that caused a problem. Please, no fighting with anyone; physical or verbal."
Dark Shadow complied. He moved back into the bed, eyes locked on Hawks. Hawks starred in bewilderment. How had Dark Shadow grown to hate him so much? Did Tokoyami feel the same? Hawks stood up. "I didn't know they were planning this," He said.
"Likely story," Dark Shadow grumbled.
Hawks felt his face grow hot. "You think I liked getting Tokoyami's beak in a box? I thought He was safe at UA! Why would I assume he needed more protection?"
"Because You only think about yourself!"
"I do my heroic duty! I never once stopped when I was injured. I had to focus on finding ways to stop Shigaraki!"
"Yet, when you were well enough to start working, you couldn't send a text to Fumikage to let him know you were okay. He had to learn through Todoroki that others had seen you around. Fumi sent you many texts checking in on you! You didn't send a single reply! You didn't care about him."
"If I didn't care about Tokoyami, then why would the league go after him?" Hawks yelled. "I care about him more than you could know!"
"Then why did you never reply?" Dark Shadow snapped back.
"Because I love him and that terrifies me!"
"Ribbit!"
The most awkward tension filled the air. Hawks felt all the heat in his face pull away. He looked at Dark Shadow. His face was shocked, yet still angry. Tsu's face was flushed. The poor girl had just witnessed Hawks admit something he wasn't quite sure he completely understood.
"I don't understand this feeling," Hawks admitted. "I know it's some sort of love. I just…"
"You should leave, ribbit." Tsu stepped towards Hawks. "This is too much, and it is getting weird. I need to call Aizawa sensei."
Hawks opened his mouth to object, but couldn't. He had definitely crossed a line. Who knew how this would play out? He nodded his head, and walked out of the door.
