"You shall also help me defeating my rival young man! I made four more brooms for my students to help me defeat it! But three of them just kept them away while Salazar just used it to play broom wars. I'll tell you! Youngsters don't have any respect for their elders," Merlin told Naruto and went away while vigorously wiping his broom
This left the three younger students baffled and Naruto laughing. "How can he speak of a founder of Hogwarts like they are some brats! Salazar was able to tame the basilisk in the chamber of secrets! And I tell you that it was horrifying until Harry killed it," Ron said as he and Harry shivered by just remembering it
Something clicked in Naruto's mind as he became serious. Then he quickly shook his head, 'I will think about it later' and smiled. "Merlin and Cadogan are at least a couple of thousand years old, Ron. Also, Merlin was the teacher of four founders. It's common knowledge. Come on. The fat lady is done with her screaming, let's go in. I am sleepy," he said and led them back to the dormitory.
Chapter 4 – Beasts
It was the first day of classes for the new term, and he was going to take his first class as a teacher along with Hagrid. He was on his way to the destination with a hippogriff, Buckbeak. At the same time, Hagrid escorted the students there. As he neared the field, he saw some Slytherins trying to scare off Harry. He instructed Buckbeak to stay at the end of the area and moved towards the students to greet them.
"DEMENTOR! DEMENTOR!" the blond Slytherin shouted, successfully startling Harry. The Slytherin laughed at the started moving backwards. "AAAAEEEEE…" he screamed like a little girl when he hit something while moving back.
All the students started to laugh loudly when they saw Draco scream as he hit their new assistant professor. "Sorry for startling you. Draco, was it?" Naruto asked. "Are you perhaps a part banshee? That was one loud scream there. I never got to study one myself. Is it okay if I take some of your hair samples for research purposes?" he continued with a curious face, faking innocence. His questions made everyone laugh louder as he continued to embarrass Draco.
The Slytherin was saved from further embarrassment as Hagrid cleared his throat to gain their attention, "Today, we will be learning about hippogriffs. They are very proud creatures. You don't want to insult a hippogriff. It may be the last thing you do. Now we will first learn how to get near one today. Naruto has volunteered himself to show you how to do it first." As Hagrid continued his lecture, Naruto moved in front of Buckbeak and did as Hagrid said, "Always let the creature make the first move. First, give a nice, deep bow, and wait for him to bow back. If he bows back, you can go ahead and touch him. If he doesn't, then step back."
As he finished his lecture, Naruto was standing next to the creature and playing with him when he spoke for the first time during the class, "Keep in mind that you are respectful of them. Now, who would like to try first?"
As Naruto waited for his answer, he went towards the students and stood on the other side of Hermione. Seeing no one respond, Hagrid took the initiative, "Seeing no one is up to the task. Harry, why don't you try it. Come on! Step up! Don't be shy!"
Harry gulped once and stood few meters away from the hippogriff. As Hagrid instructed Harry, Hermione unconsciously clutched to Naruto's arm. This caused Naruto to tense up a little due to not being familiar with regular human contact, but he forced himself to calm down, knowing there was no threat.
As Harry completed his first hippogriff ride, Draco, wanting to put down his nemesis, marched towards the animal and started to insult it. Buckbeak responded as his nature and attacked the boy to defend his pride but only scratched his forearm. As soon as this happened, both the teachers present there subdued the hippogriff. Naruto walked towards the screaming student and inspected his wound. He saw that it was a shallow gash and used a quick healing spell, "Episkey". Despite being healed, Draco kept on screaming, and after Hermione's prompt, Hagrid took him to the hospital before Naruto could say anything.
It was evening time when all the students gathered in the great hall to study. While all his peers were studying, Naruto stood before a giant skeleton in a damp, dark corridor. "The Basilisk, I know big brother will be very jealous", he chuckled and scratched Shadow's head, who was perched on his shoulder. He had asked Dumbledore about this place and how to enter it earlier that day.
After visually inspecting the carcase, he stood up at the edge of the water and took a deep breath and took out his wand, 'I think my theory is right. The flesh should have taken at least a hundred years to decompose and leave behind the skeleton. Well, let's test it'. "Oh, great basilisk, guardian of the Chamber of Secrets, the protector of Salazar Slytherin himself. Show yourself!"
After he said this, there was a rumbling in the water, and a giant snake slithered out of the statue's mouth. The basilisk stood tall in front of him and made a threatening hiss, but Naruto didn't flinch and stared into the beast's eyes. The beast looked at him and hissed, "You are the first in centuries to look in my eyes and challenge me, dammed human! Even my master's heir did not have courage enough to do it. How did you know that I was alive?"
Naruto understood the snake's hissing and answered back by hissing himself, "It would have been sad that if a legendary beast to die just be a single strike of a sword. After studying that skeleton, I suspected that you just grew yourself a new one. I know that your master, Salazar ordered you to obey his blood and attack any mudbloods, but I also know that you will not harm me with Shadow here and sensing my wand. I also suspect that you are guarding something here. Salazar could not have been stupid enough to lock you here just for his blood to torment muggle-born children" he took a short breath and continued, "So my question to you is, what are you guarding?"
The giant snake snarled when Naruto disrespected its master and just stared at him for few moments, "There is a room behind this statue. Master told me that one day someone would come here to claim what is inside it. Merlin himself locked the room. Even master was not able to enter it. He said that only the person with two brains could enter it. So, come back when you have two brains if you want to enter the room," the snake replied and went back into the statue's mouth.
"How the fuck am I to get a second brain!?" Naruto asked Shadow, who just flapped his wings and pecked Naruto's skull with his beak. "Oi! I tell you that I am way smarter than you charred chicken," He exclaimed and took out a pocket watch. "Well, it's getting late, and I already missed dinner. Let's take some samples from the carcase and get out of here," he said to Shadow and got to his work.
(A.N. When Naruto speaks to Shadow in his mind, they don't speak in any language. It's more like he understands Shadow's intent and interprets what he is trying to say)
It was around 10:30 pm when he got back from the chamber of secrets, and he was thinking about what the basilisk told him. He expected everyone to be asleep but was surprised to find Hermione studying intently on the common room's couch. "What are you studying this late, Mione?" he asked her as he plopped himself down next to her.
"EEPP!" startled by this, Hermione turned towards Naruto and sighed in relief, "Don't surprise me like that. It's been just a few minutes I started reading, we just had dinner. And where were you during dinner? I was looking for you!" she ranted to him.
Naruto just blinked towards her, "HAHAHAHAHA… Mione, it's been a few hours past dinner. What were you studying that you lost track of time?"
She got flustered and looked towards the book in her lap to hide her embarrassment and replied in a subdued voice, "I was trying to study divination. It's the only subject I don't get it properly. In Professor Trelawney's words, I don't possess 'the spirit for the noble art of divination', my heart is 'as shrivelled as an old maid's', and my soul is 'as dry as the pages of the books'. Can you believe her?" she was almost shouting at the end with some tears in her eyes, clearly showing her frustration.
Naruto was shocked, not expecting Hermione, of all people, to get frustrated from the little interaction he had with her. He understood what she was going through and just hugged her from the side. She just sobbed in his arms while he rubbed her back soothingly. After few minutes, she calmed down but did not move away from his embrace. "Mione? Can I ask you something?" he asked. Feeling her not in his chest, he continued, "All the professors told me about the students I will be teaching, and from what I got about you is that you are an exceptional witch in every class. You are certainly McGonagall's and Hagrid's favourite student. Even Snape complimented you in his own twisted way 'She may be better than few in her class but noting special'" hearing all these paise, she blushed and unconsciously nestled herself deeper into Naruto, while he kept rubbing her back. She giggled when Naruto tried to mimic Snape, her mood already much better than a few moments ago. "I will tell you, Snape saying this is as good as that you are the best student in his class. What I am trying to ask is this, divination is the first subject ever you found yourself lacking, right?" he asked.
Feeling her nod again, he continued, "Divination is a very tricky field of magic. You must have an affinity towards it to understand it properly. Not many wizards are born with this affinity. Hence many people see it as a fool's subject. Prophecies themselves are misunderstood many times. A prophecy is always very open-ended, and anyone can fit into them. For example, suppose I go to the department of mysteries and claim a previously unclaimed prophecy which says, 'He shall end the evil beast at the end of 56th moon'. In that case, I can complete it just by killing a person or a creature who have been tormenting people. Or it can even be about a group of people eradicating a wildfire. They never have a specific target, multiple people and fit into a single prophecy." Completing his explanation, he took a breath and said, "What I am trying to say is that you don't have to excel in everything. We all are good and bad at certain things. Take Ron, for example, teachers told me that he is not good in academics, but he defeated McGonagall's chess trap in his first year. Chess is a very complex game. I myself am not attuned to divination, so I don't even try it."
Hearing Naruto made Hermione feel better, "So what should I do now? I already took divination for this term," she asked, still not moving from her comfortable position.
"Hmm. You should do your best you can during this term in divination, and if you still don't find it for yourself, you can drop it next term. I can even help with all your studies! I am a man of many talents!" he said, puffing his chest. Hearing her giggle, he smiled himself, "You should smile more often. It looks good on you," he said casually.
Before she could get embarrassed, she was saved by a loud noise from Naruto's stomach. She laughed at this and separated from his embrace, blushed slightly as she noticed their closeness but suppressed it and said, "Thank you, Naruto, you gave me some good advice". She moved towards the side table and picked up a pie lying there, and handed it to Naruto, "I saved you a pie as I didn't see you at dinner. I knew you would be hungry."
Seeing the pie, his eyes sparkled. "You are the best, Mione! You just saved my life!" he said and started to eat.
She giggled, seeing him enthusiastically eating the pie, "Well, you have still not answered my earlier question. Where were you all evening? Don't think I forgot about that", she said in mock seriousness and folded her arms in front of her.
Naruto stopped eating, reached into his pocket, took out a plastic bag containing four large fangs, and handed it to her. "I went to the chamber of secrets to collect basilisk's samples. They are very rare, you know. Even big brother has not seen one. I am sending them to him for research as I can't do it here," he replied, still busy eating his pie.
It took a couple of moments for his words to register, "WHAT!? Are you mad? What if something dangerous was there? And how did you even get in it? Harry told me that you have to speak parseltongue to enter it", she said
"There was nothing dangerous there, just sewers. Gramps had them checked after last year's incident. Plus, I asked him if I could go there first. As for parseltongue? I can speak it myself," he told her, not revealing that the basilisk was still alive and about the locked room.
Hearing his answer, Hermine calmed down but said, "You know, you shouldn't tell everyone about your ability to speak parseltongue. Many people believe it to be a mark for dark wizards."
As he set the empty plate aside, he replied, "That is loads of bullshit. It is only a stereotype here in this part of the world. I have met many parselmouths during my travels. They are very respected as an experienced parselmouth can talk to all the reptiles, and they usually save places from dragons. Being able to speak parseltongue is a perfect tool for dragon keepers." He then stood up and checked time, "Well, we should get to sleep. It's almost midnight."
Hermione also stood up and, before Naruto could walk away, hugged him. "Thank you again for helping me. You are a great friend," she said and quickly went away to hide her embarrassment.
Naruto just stood there dumbfounded. He never had a human friend. He smiled in happiness and lay down on the couch. He had an excellent sleep that night despite sleeping on a sofa.
