I dedicate this chapter to Wils my snake. You were more than a pet, you were a friend and part of the family and ill miss you. From your curious eyes to your loving nature you were the best snake a guy could have.
Story start
On a ship to an uninhabited island
"Whoa, this is like a like a real party." said Hitomi looking around, wearing a red dress sipping red wine
'It's not bad, but unless you've been to an event planed by Cayde you don't know how good a party can be.' I thought with a twinge of sadness 'Cayde would have livened this party up and put on some decent music at least.'
'He maybe dead but as long as people remember him he's never truly gone.' said Casper in my mind
'Thats true.' I thought having another sip of scotch
At the moment I'm wearing my blood lineage robes, boots and gloves that I got in the last season 'Didn't really think if use them again but there nice, they fit this 'I'm rich and important' atmosphere and I can't wait to see the 'what the?' expression on a therianthropes face if they try to slice through this coat.
"I'd calm down if I were you, I'd say that 90 per cent of the people here mistake money for power and this is just a show of their 'fake' or 'hollow' power." I said out loud
"Huh, well it still looks nice." responded Hitomi
"It has to be, these fights are very important for the Zaibatsu." said Okajima wearing a nice suit and a bow tie that was way too small for his neck.
While this Ui was going around having a look at the competition just in case there was a last second change of participants or any injuries however slight that were unknown. She was wearing...okay I have no idea what it was called but it was basically a rectangular cloth around her chest with a skirt around her hips. Knowing that there were others would also would be checking out their competition as well she 'accidently' caused a small scene by bumping into a waitress causing her to almost drop her tray.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" said Ui repeatedly
"It's fine." said the waitress in question with a touch of frostiness before walking off
'I am sorry but if anyone was checking me out that little show should have convinced them I'm no threat. After all why would a strong therianthorpe apologize to a lowly waitress?' thought Ui to herself, keeping her expression meek
Just then we approached by Leo, who was wearing a white suit which design honestly reminded me of one worn by those who play the piano professionally with it's long coattails.
"I hope your enjoying yourself Mr Maclean and Ratel. While I'm not participating this time around I will be wishing you the best from the side lines." said Leo
"Why thanks...umm who were you again?" asked Hitomi much to Leo's annoyance
"This is Brute Leo, the won you defeated in your first match." whispered Okajima
"Oh, I guess I kind of remember someone like that." said Hitomi
"Sorry about that, Hitomi has the memory of a goldfish. She didn't mean that to come across as an insult." I said
"Hey why are you trying to make me look stupid?" asked Hitomi annoyed
"Who said anything about trying? Oh by the way bud, how's the rehab?" I ask
I swear I saw Leo's eye twitch
"I..do not have a drug problem." said Leo evenly
"Come on buddy, first step is admitting you have a problem." I said patting him on the shoulder with an internal smirk 'This is never getting old.'
"What's this about you not fighting? Are you afraid to fight me that much you're chickening out?" asked a guy I knew to be Brute Tiger
"Taiga, it's been a while." answered Leo
"Be careful, that's the previous winner." warned Okajima as people start to gossip about Leo and Tiger in the background and how they wouldn't be fighting this time
"Big brother wait up! I'm sorry Leo, brother was looking forward to fighting you again." apologised Eruza
"I'm sorry too, but unfortunately my left arm hasn't fully healed." responded Leo and even if I didn't know what he was up to I would have still doubted the truth in that sentence
"There's no way a minor injury like that should stop you." argued Tiger
"Unless, oh no don't tell me that your becoming addicted to pain killers as well steroids?" I ask with mock sorrow
"I'm not." said Leo, unable to keep the anger out of his voice completely "addicted to drugs."
"And who are you supposed to be?" asked Tiger looking at me
Before I could answer we were interrupted by Hitomi
"Oy Eruza, is this the brother you've always been on about?" asked Hitomi "From what I've heard your pretty strong, I look forward to fighting you."
"What are you doing!" hissed Eruza quietly as she got in close to Hitomo "You know this is all your fault right? Because of you big brother can't fight against Leo."
"So? Who cares if Leo is fighting or not? All you have to do is beat the person in front of you, to kill them before they can kill you. That's all there is to it, right?" said Hitomi intensely
"Hmph." scoffed Tiger walking away "A Destroyal without Leo will be child's play."
"Hold on big brother." called Eruza, rushing after him
"Please excuse me as well." said Leo walking away and towards a very familiar figure; Yoko and our eyes briefly met.
'I get the feeling she doesn't like you.' remarked Casper in my head
'I'm not here to make people like me.' I replied before I saw a certain jacket-wearing piece of shit walk down a nearby hallway 'I am here to take about the trash though, and that Brute Cobra is at the top of that list.'
As I sneak of to follow Brute Cobra everyone else is enjoying the party when suddenly the lights turned off, except for the ones covering a nearby stage, and the woman standing on it.
"Thank you all for your patience. I will be the master of ceremonies for this tournament. My name is Mai Shinozaki from the Killing Bites Bureau. First the basic rules of the Destroyal will be explained by our Director General Reiichi Shidoh." said the woman before stepping to the side
"It is nice to see you all here, the Destroyal is an event where four three-man teams will compete against each other. Each team represents a different zabibatsu and each member on that team will be given orders their own financer, these orders are to be obeyed unless you wish to face dire circumstances." warned Shidoh before the screen behind him lit up "The stage itself will be an uninhabited island in the Philippine Sea called Hotek Island. As you know we are on our way there on our countries largest cruise ship The Beast King. The island will also have a superimposed game grid over it with each square being a 100meters, Brutes will be placed in these squares as pieces and moved by the players or finances. When more than one Brute of opposing teams are in the same square they must battle. It goes without saying that the battle will continue until only one team is left standing in that quadrant, either through victory or the opposing team fleeing. It also doesn't matter the number of Brutes in that area or the number of teams. It can be one on one, two on two, three on three, a mix or a free for all it doesn't matter. The only condition of winning is that all the Brutes from rival teams must either be dead or incapacitated in some shape or form, meaning that the last ones or one standing will be crowned champions of the Destroyal. Now we will be arriving soon, I suggest anyone participating, either as a Brute or as a Player make any final arrangements they need to. Thank you." said Shidoh
"Well we better move. Ms Hitomi, Ms Inaba are you both...? Wait where did Inaba go? Callum-san have you seen?" asked Okajima turning around only to see no one "Where has everyone gone?"
With Inaba
"I knew I shouldn't have had those clams and I really don't want to have to go to the toilet during the Destroyal whined Inaba
"Oh yeah, and what are you going to do about it?" asked a sadistic voice in front of her
There in front of her, in the woman's bathroom, wearing a jacket with tassels and a scar running down his forehead was Brute Cobra. Facing him was her teacher/sensei Callum and behind him was a cowering waitress
'Seems Cobra is just as sick as his report made him out to be.' thought Inaba, readying herself for a confrentation
"Oh look more company, it looks like I'll have two girls to play with." said Cobra, finally noticing her
"You'll die before you get that chance." I said ready to cut him down
"So you keep saying, but I don't see you doing anything. So how about you leave and I'll forget you ever tried to interrupt my fun." offered Cobra
"Are you still not done?" interrupted a voice
Looking in the direction of the voice I saw Brute Gecko in a Chinese style dress and Brute Crocodile in a simple long sleeved t-shirt
'Well, there goes the idea of killing Cobra. Too many witnesses to do it now.' I thought to myself
"I haven't even started thanks to this guy, give me a moment so I can deal with him will ya?" asked Cobra
"Hold on that's the third member of team Ishida and that's Brutes Ratels finances." said Brute Crocodile
"Huh? This little girl defeated lizard?" asked Cobra surprised before giving Ui his full attention "I'd love to see how you did that."
"And if you don't get back I'll give her and everyone here a demonstration on how to defang a snake." I threatened
"Ohh, you know who I am do you? Did a little research did you? Well, that's not going to help you when I..."
"That's enough, you can deal with him however you like after the Destroyal but unless you want to get yourself disqualified and cause us all the inconvenience then I suggest you calm down. Besides I believe that it was really her that defeated Lizard." said Gecko as Hitomi showed up
"Guys is time to get going." informed Hitomi
"Why isn't it Ratel herself, I guess I'll have to unleash my pent up energy against you." said Cobra lecously
"You want to die?" threatened Hitomi
"Thats enough, Kaede's right we can't afford to get kicked out at this stage. You can settle things in the Destroyal now let's go." said Crocidile before leaving
"I guess I'll see you in the Destroyal." said Cobra with a grin
"I can't wait to spend some quality time." said Gecko sinisterly
"What was that all about?" asked Hitomi
"Just some muscle flexing, but you should be careful around them." I advised
"Why...don't you think I could take them?" asked Hitomi
"The danger isn't the threats you see that is the danger is the one's you don't." I remark
"Whatever, hey Inaba we need to get going." responded Hitomi
As Hitomi, Inaba and Okijama left I regoined the rest of the players. Me being the last to sit at the table
15 minutes later
"The Brutes have reached their respective starting points. Players it is time to direct your attention to the game board and your respective piece." said the master of ceremonies before tv screens started lighting up around us. "These monitors you see around you will display your pieces and their current status via on-site cameras. If your piece is eliminated however the screen will display whatever battle is happening elsewhere while the main screen behind me will be showing the most impressive battle in progress or the piece of the current player, should more that one fight happen simultaneously. The table in front of you shows the game field and the place of your piece using satellite imaging. Dice roles will also happen automatically and as last years winner Mr Shinada will be the first to move."
After a four was rolled
"My first move will be from 5-1 to 7-3." instructed Mr Shinada
"Mr Maclean. Do you have a firm grasp of the terrain?" asked Yoko "This isn't just a game you know. If you move your piece haphazardly then you'll end up leading them through cliffs and rivers. Because while the map may look 2D the terrain isn't and if you make the wrong move your piece will be killed either from refusing your order...or falling to their death after stepping off a cliff. Which reminds me, you have looked over this site before hand, haven't you?" asked Yoko with a glare
"Haha how would a university teacher be able to do all that in advance?" asked another player
"Well you can do all sorts of things on the Internet these days." said another player insultingly.
"Including finding pictures of your acne-ridden face as a bucktooth teenager." I shot back much to his anger
"Mr Maclean, please move your piece six squares." interrupted the master of ceremonies.
"In that case I'll move to quadrant 15-24." I said much to the shock of everyone around me "What didn't think I'd be able to read a map?"
In truth I had used Shidoh's computer to learn everything there was about the island, every nook and cranny, every shortcut terrain wise, the very minerals in the ground I all knew. So even if I didn't know how to read the geographic map and it's lines showing the level of the terain I'd be able to move Hitomi around confidently. Next to me I spot Yoko subtly signal the man the corner across from her, but not subtly enough. And sure enough when it was his turn he moved Brute Bear into position.
'So her worst possible opponent is her first one.' I thought to myself 'If she uses her usual strategy of using her hide to measure the strength of her opponent it's all over. Even if she manages to survive the blow a serious injury this early will all but seal her defeat later on.'
With Hitomi
"Hmmm, I wouldn't have expected the isolated transformation to come in handy so soon. It barely costs me any energy to keep my eyes and ears transformed and I'm able to tell straight away if someone is trying to sneak up on me." said Hitomi out loud
"That's where you are wrong." answered a voice behind her, a voice that belonged a tall a well muscled man "I never intended to sneak up behind you and only a coward would attack an opponents back while their unaware. A true warrior faces their enemies head on."
"I like the way you think old man, who are you?" asked with a grin
"You don't recognise me? But I don't think I should be surprised." said the man as he started to change "I did look quite different to before."
When the transformation was completed he unleashed a deafening roar in Hitomi's direction as lights lit up around them.
"This shall be your end!" roared Brute Bear swinging his arm down "Bear Palm!"
Only for Hitomi to jump over the arm, avoiding the attack completely and unleash her own slash attack. From his collar bone down to his chest.
"H-how? Wait, wait don't tell me you were able to read my attack just from one blow when we first met?" asked Brute Bear
"Well it was a gamble. If I judged it wrong I would be the one out of commission not you. But as always, the one with the sharpest fangs wins. It's just that simple."
Back at the table
"How unexpected! Brute Bear a candidate for championship has been beaten in the very first round with a single blow!" exclaimed Mai Shinozaki, doing her job of master of ceremonies to stir up excitement
"My Bear lost? How?" said one of the players in shock
Ignoring him I turned to Yoko
"It seems your first strategy failed, better luck next time." I said
'How dare you, I'll crush you and your piece.' thought Yoko with resolution
