Familiar tired blue neon eyes greeted mom and me at the hospital. Kota was at home with Ragdoll, with the hope that her hyperactive mood could somehow distract my little brother, not that she was fairing any better than us with current news, but it was better than nothing.

"It's good to see you arrived here safely." The doctor, Aoi Sharagami, said grimly. The kind look on his face now replaced by tired eyes, a complicated expression, and his blonde hair seemed paler. Still, just looking at him brought a tiny smile to my face.

After I convinced the man (definitely not paying him) to go on a date with Pixie-Bob, they, fortunately, clicked together and started to date, so he eventually became a family friend. Not only that, Aoi was grateful that I helped him to meet Ryuko, and now every time they visit us, he brings cinnamon candy (My favorite food in the world) to me! So yeah, I like him a lot! Best quest ever.

"Hey, Uncle Aoi! Did ya ask Aunt Ryuko's hand already?" I teased, trying to somehow lift the heavy mood before we had to talk about the elephant in the room. Since the beginning of the year I've been teasing him about asking Pixie-bob to marry him as she won't shut up about 'How much of a cutie' he is.

"Ha! Not yet, boy, maybe one day..."

Anyway, my calmness was only possible because of [Gamer's Mind]. Mom doesn't have it. "Aoi-san, as much as I want to convince you to marry Ryuko already, could we talk about..." Her voice failed to complete the phrase.

If Aoi looked bad, Amaya was ten times worse. The usual glow in her amber eyes was gone, her brown hair, cut to shoulder length, was messily tied, and her habitual posture, always confident and proud, was replaced by a less sure of herself.

"Hm, Yes, Amaya-san." Aoi's expression returned to a professional one, "If you could follow me, I will guide you to a private room and explain there... The damage."

Shit

We followed him through a corridor and turned left on another one until finally arriving in front of our destination. His office was very blunt. Bookshelves decorated the walls, a wooden desk in the middle of the room with a computer on top, and three padded chairs, two for guests and one for himself. Now that I stop to think, Aoi was probably a big shot in the hospital. Damn, He has a neat office.

"Rei is currently in surgery." He started after we all sat, "As you know, my quirk allows me to have an x-ray vision when I want. From what I could see, he had more broken bones than the other way around. Skull fracture was only one of the many injuries."

My eyes widened with the news... Holy shit. A brief look at my mother showed that she had yet to let the words sink.

"Honestly... It's a miracle he is still alive. Amaya-san, the damage he sustained was more than enough to kill him. There is no way someone could take that much damage and survive. I know that this is hard news, but even if by any chance he gets through surgery, there are no doubts that he is crippled for life."

Mother, again, started to cry. Aoi stood with a neutral expression, but I could see the sadness in his eyes.

Me? I don't fucking know. I was bitter. It was evident that my father only survived due to the extra HP my skills gave him. Heck, with so much damage, I'm surprised he didn't die either way. On the other hand, while I might've saved him from death, there was a greater chance that I condemned him to a worse destiny at the bare minimum.

Yeah, he survived, and now he will live his life as a vegetable in the worst cases. The prize of 'Son of the Year' goes to me!

"Did you get any info about what happened?" I asked Aoi after mother calmed down a little bit.

"Yeah, I know a little bit from what the paramedics told me. Apparently, the villain 'Muscular' attacked some civilians near the center of the town. Rei somehow arrived in time to avoid any casualties, but he was overpowered." Aoi explained, "He was lucky. Before the villain could finish your father, Wolffman, who'd been called by Rei, appeared in time to avoid Muscular finishing him off."

Aoi's expression turned somber, "Wolffman died on duty while protecting a fellow hero and civilian lives. His wife and newborn daughter arrived here in the hospital a few minutes before you did."

"Gods..." I heard mother say under her breath.

Meanwhile, not even [Gamer's Mind] could stop my intern turmoil.

After all, Wolffman wasn't supposed to be there. He took my mother's place, and only because I convinced my father to call someone to patrol with him. Now he is dead. His life for a slight hope that my father could somehow survive.

Wasn't I responsible for his death? Even if it was only a little...

Way to go, Rai. You're going to be the best hero in the world!

It took twelve agonizing hours for the system notification to appear and confirm whether or not my dad survived the surgeries he had to go through, and I almost started to cry when I saw my old man was alive. A small voice in my head tilted to remind me that this result only happened because someone else died in his place, but I quickly ignored it.

While waiting for the result, I've already blamed myself enough. I won't drown in pity anymore. My father and mother survived, and I am at least partially responsible for that. If that's selfish of me, so be it. I just have to do my best so that other people won't die anymore.

Today was a tough lesson to learn. I'm not a hero like Deku, who would jump head-on at danger and fuck the consequences whether they're harmful to him or others.

I won't sacrifice myself for one person if I can't save more people later because I will be dead.

No, I'm different. I am the one who will try to find a way to save everyone, no matter what I have to do. If lying, cheating, and manipulating are necessary for everyone to be happy in the end, I don't mind if I need to be the to do it. Not very heroic, is it? But what matters is the end result.

Of course, for that, I need to get stronger.

Lucky I have a game to play.

[Quirk Bought] - Water Control.

Uh... Surprise! I'm alive?

Very short chapter just to show that, yes, I'm alive, and to say that I will probably update it again one day... not sure when but It will happen!

Next Chap will begin with the entrance exam and there will be some ''flashbacks'' to explain how the MC trained his quirk, people's reactions, and other stuff that occurred meanwhile. Nothing biggie.

Sorry for disappearing, life sucks and I'm not very good in the head these months so yeah.
