"I'm sorry to barge in," Lonnie apologized as she closed the bedroom door, which automatically locked behind her. Gazing around the room for a moment, she wondered, "What happened to Carlos's stuff?"
"It's at Evie's castle for the summer," Jay informed as he taped up a box of his personal belongings. "I wanted to wait until after graduation to pack my stuff, but he finished packing the day of graduation. I've had my room to myself since then, but I have until tomorrow to finish before I'm kicked out."
Placing the box on top of the others in the corner, Jay finally gave his full attention to the unusually fidgeting Lonnie. "Did you need something?" he interrogated. "If not, I have a lot to get done—"
"I'm leaving for my mother's army tomorrow," Lonnie reminded almost shyly, her gaze at the ground. "I wanted to talk to you . . . about . . . us."
Jay tilted his head in feign curiosity, though really his heart was pounding at the thought of her leaving. "What about us?" He wondered nonchalantly. "There's noth—"
"I think I'm in love with you," Lonnie confessed with a light blush on her cheeks, refusing to meet the thief's eyes, which gleamed with surprise. "I-I just don't know what I should do. The best chance I have to qualify is this year, but I-I'm wondering if I should risk not going so I can give us a chance, but—mmph!"
Her speech pleasantly ended when her chin was lifted upwards, and a pair of lips pressed against hers lovingly. After a few moments, the kiss ended with the blush on Lonnie's cheeks growing while Jay had a somewhat arrogant smirk on his lips.
"You talk too much," Jay teased.
Before she could have a chance to make a retort, Jay wrapped his arms around Lonnie's waist before kissing her once more. Giving in to the kiss, Lonnie gladly wrapped her arms around the thief's neck, entangling her fingers in Jay's long hair.
While Lonnie moved to deepen the kiss, Jay slowly walked her backwards until she hit the edge of the bed. Making a split-second decision, Lonnie leaned back until she laid on the bed with Jay still on top of her. Moving her fingers from his hair, she allowed them to trail down his back to the edge of shirt, pulling at it until he got the hint to take it off. While Jay hurriedly threw the offending clothing across the room, Lonnie trailed her fingers to the front of his pants, tugging at the front button so she could—
BAM!
With his breath knocked out of him, Jay found himself slammed on the ground by a blocker on the opposite team. He had been so focused on keeping his mind on Tourney, but his mind wondered to his last 'encounter' with the daughter of Mulan. It was quite reasonable to say this first practice did not go easier than the original one.
Ben, being the kind friend that he was, helped Jay to his feet while Coach Jenkins called for a five-minute break. When the thief was off the ground, Ben muttered, so the others wouldn't hear, "What is going on with you? This is the worst you have ever played."
"I know, I know." Jay mumbled in agreement. "I just can't stop thinking about—"
"Lonnie?" Ben assumed knowingly. "She doesn't remember anything that will happen. I tried jogging her memory by mentioning you, but she acted like she had no idea who you were."
The prince tilted his head curiously. "What exactly happened between you two?" Ben wondered. "You didn't see her off at the train station. She waited to get on until it was almost too late because she wanted to see you. Why—"
"The main thing that Lonnie talked about our entire senior year was trying out for her mother's army after graduation," Jay insisted as he shook his head stubbornly. "I knew if she saw me, she would want to give up her dream because we . . ."
When the other boy trailed off, Ben raised an eyebrow in suspicion. "So the rumors are true," the prince speculated. "You two really—"
"I left early in the morning," Jay interrupted forcefully. "I didn't leave because I regretted what we did, because I really enjoyed what we did. I left because, as I said before, I knew she would give up joining her mother's army and I didn't want her to regret it."
"So instead, you made her regret having a 'one-night-stand' with you." Ben shook his head in dismay. "You know, Lonnie refused to watch me propose to Mal or come to our engagement party because she didn't want to run into you. My best friend didn't want to celebrate one of the best moments of my life because of you."
"And I am so sorry for it," Jay apologized sincerely. "I planned on calling her the day after your engagement party to make things up, but then we all got sucked back in time. I promise, if or when she remembers in this time, I will explain everything to her and will keep apologizing until she gets tired of it."
"You better keep your word," Ben warned. "For now, get your head in the game before Coach decides you aren't good enough to be on the team. There is no way we will be able to win the championship without you."
Before the thief could retort, Coach Jenkins blew his whistle, signaling that the small break was over. While the prince quickly went to his position, Jay trailed behind as he tried concentrating on the practice—
Though he was more determined than ever to set things right with Lonnie.
An hour or so later after the Tourney practice had ended, Mal, Evie, and Uma were at their lockers during their passing period. They were discussing what Mal should paint on each of their lockers, since she hadn't decided what she wanted on hers yet and Uma thought it would be cool to have something on hers too.
However, their brainstorming session came to an end when they heard obnoxiously loud laughter coming from down the way. The trio of girls slyly peered pass Mal's locker door to see Chad Charming—the 'perfect' son of Cinderella and King Charming—laughing away as he hanged with Audrey and Ben at Ben's locker. Ben was just grabbing his textbook for his next class while Audrey was leaned against a locker as she subtly tried to rub her dull headache away.
Just like before, Chad noticed the group of girls and urgently tapped Ben's arm. Pointing at the trio, he announced, "Those kids are nothing but trouble."
Rolling her eyes at the insult, Mal purposely turned her back so she could face her girl friends. "So I'm guessing you're heading straight to class again?"
"Not this time," Evie denied confidently, gesturing to the other group. "I didn't get to see how the conversation went last time. I want to see how it goes this time."
"And I have no idea where my next class is, so I'm staying too," Uma claimed with a careless shrug. "It's not like I have anything better to do."
"Come on, Chad," Ben insisted with his famous smile, closing his locker without looking. "You should give them a chance. None of them are like their parents."
Leaning her head against the locker, as the coldness helped ease the pain, Audrey wondered softly, "Are you sure you can trust them?"
"Absolutely," the soon-to-be-king agreed, but then 'suddenly' noticed the Auradon princess's strange behavior. "Are you ok? You look awfully pale."
"I-I just have a small headache," Audrey reluctantly admitted as she practically forced herself to move away from the locker. "I'm going to splash some water in my face. Maybe that will help."
Not waiting for the boys to continue the conversation, the princess slowly trudged her way down the hall, keeping her gaze to the floor as she passed the trio of curious girls. As she made her way to the entrance, Gil—who stood near it and wanted to be a gentleman—politely opened the door for her.
Offering a small smile, Audrey spoke a soft 'thank you' before she slipped inside—
Never noticing the tiniest of blushes that was forming on Gil's cheeks.
"Well, would you look at that?" Uma commented with a sneaky smile on her lips. "Gil has his first crush."
Walking to the girls, Ben wrapped an arm around his beloved's shoulders as he kissed her forehead, greeting, "How was your first day again?"
"Better," Mal admitted with a careless shrug. "Evie and I took Uma and Gil on a tour of the school while you and the other three were at Tourney practice."
"Speaking of Tourney practice," Ben began as he cautiously looked around them. He waited until frightened Jane walked by before he continued in a quiet tone, "Jay couldn't keep his head straight. He told me about what happened between him and Lonnie."
Mal sighed, her shoulders drooping in sadness. "He's finally telling people," she commented humorlessly. "I thought he would wait until he fixed things with Lonnie."
Ben stared at his fiancé in surprise. "You knew?" he deduced incredulously. "How?"
"I'm his best friend," Mal reminded with a small smile. "Jay tells me stuff way before he tells any of his guy friends. I'm sure Lonnie tells you stuff she doesn't tell her girl friends."
"I'm not going to ask about whatever you're talking about since it seems personal," Uma claimed as she purposely interrupted the conversation. "But what's up with Audrey?"
"Yeah," Evie agreed with a shake of her head. "I know Audrey wasn't ill the first time. What changed?"
"She acted off during practice too," Ben concurred knowingly. "Carlos caught on to it first when he went to check on Dude. Audrey sat out most of cheer practice while her assistant captain took over. Somehow, Dude escaped from his leash and laid on her lap for the rest of the time, and she acted like she didn't care. When Carlos grabbed him from Audrey, Dude said something was wrong with Audrey."
"How would Dude know?" Mal wondered.
"After he started living on campus permanently, Fairy Godmother took Dude to these special classes in the city," Ben recalled vaguely. "He was trained to be the campus service dog, which is why Dude wantedto stay with Carlos after they first met, but I didn't want to tell Carlos that."
"There are more than one type of service dogs," Uma informed, as though it was the most obvious things in the world. "Services could be for hearing, seeing, allergy, along with a couple others."
Noticing the strange looks given to her, Uma rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Gil told me a while back," she clarified with a saddened sigh. "After all, Gil set his own broken arm so his father wouldn't find out. He found some medical books at the marketplace and did every step exactly as it says. Everyone that lives on that side of the Isle goes to Gil for any injuries they have because he's the best. He read the chapter about the service dogs while he was at my mother's restaurant."
"That may be useful to know later," Evie noted before she turned her attention to the prince-king. "What kind of service dog is Dude?"
"He's—"
AAAAAAAAAAHHHH!
Hearing the high-pitch, familiar scream, the group immediately bolted into the school to find the owner of the shriek. In the matter of mere seconds, the three girls entered the girl's bathroom, as that was where the noise was coming from. Inside, Jane was standing off to the side watching a terrified Audrey practically hyperventilating as she stared at herself in the mirror.
"Audrey?" Mal questioned cautiously as she approached the frightened princess. "Are you ok? What happened?"
"Th-the mirror." Audrey pointed to the glass with a shaky hand, causing the trio to look in the general directions, only seeing their reflection in return. "I-I could have sworn I saw . . ."
The Auradon princess shook her head stubbornly, as though she was tried to get the scary image out of her head. "I-I just need some rest," she insisted unconvincingly. "I didn't sleep that well last night. Excuse me."
Audrey pushed pass the Isle girls as they gave her looks of concern as she fled the restroom.
"Uma," Evie called out to get the sea witch's attention. "What is another type of service dog you didn't mention before?"
"The only other one I can think of psychiatric."
"Which is what?" Mal wondered, as she never heard the phrase before.
Sighing once more, Uma defined, "Mental illnesses."
