9 Not So Invisible

Dani jolted upright, Lancer shouting at her. She'd fallen asleep in his class again. She swore under her breath. Lancer rolled his eyes.

"Do you have your paper or not Miss Fenton?" Dani nodded rubbing her eyes and pulling her paper out of her bag and handing it to Lancer. "See me after class Miss Fenton." Dani nodded and shared a look with Sam around Lancer. She'd been up late last night, finishing the paper then sneaking out of the house, once everyone else was asleep to see if she could find the amulet. She hadn't had any luck it appeared to have just disappeared. Which for all she knew was distinctly possible. The bell rang and Dani shoved her books into her bag but remained seated as the rest of the class filed out to lunch. She stood only when the last person had left. Lancer was waiting at his desk, wearing a frown.

"Danielle, is everything ok at home?" Dani frowned, a bit confused.

"Yeah, why?" Lancer frowned.

"Ever since your lab accident you have been acting a bit different." He eyed the fingerless gloves she wore practically religiously these days. "I need you to know that if there's anything happening at home that you feel you can't talk to anyone about you can talk to your teachers. We are here to help you." Dani nodded but her frown returned as Lancer pulled a note from his desk. "That said, this is the third time this week you've fallen asleep in my class which means, I am required by school policy to have a talk with your parents. Either or both but it needs to be tonight." Dani swore under her breath but nodded taking the paper from him.

"I'll talk to my dad." Lancer nodded.

"You're free to go Miss Fenton." Dani nodded and left. She shook her head as she approached her locker. She really didn't want to take this to her dad but if even Lancer had noticed that she was acting differently then it was just a matter of time until her parents noticed it too. She spun in the combination to her locker and opened the door. Before she could even look up from the paper in her hand someone shoved her from behind, sending her toppling into her locker before it slammed closed behind her. She swore.

"Ha, poor klutzy Fenton." Dani grumbled under her breath. She knew that voice. That was the voice of Casper High's resident freshman mean girl. The very pretty girl had been picking on anyone she considered to be less attractive than her. Unfortunately Dani definitely fell into that category. Paulina had bloomed early showing up to the first day of freshman year looking like a sophomore. She'd been using that against anyone who was less developed than her ever since. Dani had always been a bit of a late bloomer though her powers seemed to be kicking puberty into overdrive. Dani heard someone else step up to the locker as Paulina and Star laughed. Dani felt herself transform as anger flooded her. She slipped invisibly out of the locker and frowned. Dash had come up to her locker. Dash hadn't spoken to her since second grade.

"You seen Fenton?" He asked and Dani frowned still invisible behind Paulina.

"Why would you be looking for that little nobody?" Paulina snipped and Dani reached forward, intending to invisibly push Paulina over. But her hand sunk into Paulina's skin, the rest of her sinking into the other girl just as fast. Her perspective shifted and she blinked with eyes that weren't hers. She looked down at hands far too tan to be hers, the nails meticulously manicured. Somehow she knew that she was in Paulina's head and she was in charge. Well this was just an opportunity too beautiful to pass up.

"I mean she's clearly cooler than I am, even though I pretend otherwise just cause I made the cheer team." Dash frowned as Dani grinned, it did show on Paulina's face but Dani didn't care as she stepped out of Paulina and back into her locker, transforming back to normal before knocking on the door to her locker.

"Can someone let me out of here?" She heard Paulina huff and stomp off, Star at her side as the door of her locker was pulled open by Dash who grinned at her.

"Someone order a knight in shining armor?" He asked with a grin. Dani frowned slightly, but couldn't help her blush as he helped her out of the locker.

"Thanks I appreciate it." Dash grinned as Dani pulled her lunch out of her locker.

"Well I was wondering if you had a date to the dance on Friday?" He asked with a wink. Dani blinked at him.

"I'm sorry run that by me again?" Dash's grin never wavered.

"I want to go to the dance with you on Friday. Spring fling?" Dash asked with a charming smile.

"Why me?" Dani asked, Dash had been in the same school as Dani since kindergarten but he'd stopped talking to her years ago. It wasn't like they had ever been close but Dani had been a wallflower, practically invisible for years. Why would that have changed now?

"Cause I think you're cute. What do you say? Unless you're already going with someone?" Dani shook her head.

"I'm not. Going with someone else I mean. Um, sure I'd love to." Dash grinned and winked at her.

"Excellent. I'll pick you up Friday at six." He winked again and waved as he turned to leave. As he did she noticed a large gold band around his wrist, with a large stone in the center. She frowned slightly but couldn't help the blush on her cheeks as she headed to the table she Tanya and Sam usually shared. They were already waiting there. Tanya raised an eyebrow.

"You look off, everything ok?" She asked and Dani sat down.

"Dash just asked me to the dance." Sam spit out his drink like it had been poisoned.

"Who did what!" He demanded. Tanya smirked at Sam for a minute before turning to Dani.

"What did you say!"

"Well no one else had asked me. I sorta said yes. Oh and I figured out I can posses people." She made that last comment like she was stating something completely benign. Sam and Tanya blinked at her as she bit into her sandwich.

"These two things are completely unrelated?" Sam asked mopping up his face. Dani frowned at him, swallowing her bite.

"Yeah. Why wouldn't they be?" Sam shook his head.

"It's just a bit unexpected I mean I wasn't sure Dash 'Grade D' Baxter even knew your name." He pointed out and Dani bristled slightly.

"Just because I can be invisible doesn't mean no one sees me." She said slamming her sandwich back into her bag and standing storming away from the table. Sam buried his head in his hands.

"You really could have handled that better Sam." Tanya pointed out and Sam nodded, face still hidden. "You were planning to ask her weren't you?" Sam nodded again. "Well looks like your stuck with me instead." Sam looked up at Tanya with a questioning look.

"Well you don't get to go with the girl you wanted to go with, I don't have a date but we both still want to go. Simple math there Sam. And that way when Dash inevitably fucks up, you can swoop in and save her feelings. Like the gothic knight you wish you were." Tanya took a bite of her sandwich chewed swallowed and looked over at Sam with a serious expression. "But I expect you to wear a suit."

"Ok fine, but only cause I sort of want to see this blow up in her face." Tanya laughed.

"Only so you can swoop in and clean up the mess." She teased. Sam flicked a piece of cucumber at her.

"How did you know I'd agree to go with you?" He asked. Tanya shrugged.

"If you didn't ask Dani you were gonna be bummed and if no one asked me so was I. The solution was so simple." She shrugged.

"How'd you know I wouldn't be able to ask Dani out?"

"One of two reasons. You would chicken out again, or Dani would interpret it as a friends thing and I'd get dragged along anyway. Really this was inevitable." Sam buried his head back in his hands as Tanya finished her lunch.
