10 Accidental Agreement
Dani approached her dad in the lab after school. He didn't look too happy. He was holding a glowing fishing line that was connected to the Ghost Portal. Dani frowned.
"Um dad what are you doing?" She asked tentatively.
"Fishing for ghosts, with my new invention the Fenton Ghost Fisher. It's coated with a special ectoplasmic resin that ghosts can't break." He huffed. "But I haven't caught anything all day. Honestly I'm so annoyed right now I could take it out on the first person to give me bad news." Dani frowned. Jack was still looking into the portal when an idea occurred to her. It was selfish and maybe stupid but it was the only way to stay out of trouble. "This isn't bad news is it?"
Dani, still behind her father, glanced around and went intangible before stepping into her father's body. It was weird to say the least, she'd never been this tall, or big.
"No, Mr. Lancer would just like to speak to us." She grinned through Jack's face. But she didn't have much practice possessing people. She decided that it would be best to walk the distance between home and Casper High. It took her a few blocks to get her father's walk down. He was big but more of him was made of muscle than she'd ever thought. She made it to the school and headed straight to Lancer's office knocking on the door and psyching herself up. She still sounded like herself so she had to drop her voice a few octaves as she greeted Lancer.
"Ah Mr. Fenton. Thank you for coming in on such short notice. I wanted to talk to you about Danielle."
Dani nodded her father's head.
"She mentioned that she fell asleep in class again. She's been studying so hard lately that she loses track of time and forgets to sleep." Dani said through her father's mouth. Lancer nodded glancing down at the papers on his desk.
"That is part of what I wanted to talk about. Is everything alright with Danielle at home? Her grades were steady for most of the year, maybe not as prestigious as her older sister's but decent. But for a few months now they've been on the decline. It seems to have started around the same time as the lab accident that occurred at your house. Can you tell me more about that?" Dani frowned, her father's face following her expression.
"Not a lot to tell. She got a small electrical shock from an experiment we thought was a failure." Lancer nodded.
"Yes, I saw the burn on her hand before she started wearing gloves. Have you taken her to a doctor since then?" The teacher asked looking genuinely concerned.
"Of course we did!" That was a lie, and it tasted sour on Dani's tongue, not that she was even using her tongue to tell it. They probably should have taken her to a doctor, normal parents probably would have but the nature of her parents experiments meant that it was difficult to explain to a real medical professional. Maddie had minored in nursing in college and used that to great effect. But it clearly wasn't enough for her to notice that her own daughter was half dead. She shook her head, her father's head, then forced a smile. "It is good to know that you care about your students though, it's no wonder you're Dani's favorite teacher." Mr. Lancer raised an eyebrow.
"First I've heard of that." Dani took a deep breath through her father's lungs.
"You honestly are. Not all teachers care like you seem to. I promise there's nothing going on with her at home that I don't know about, she talks to me and my wife about everything." Another nausea inducing lie but one Lancer ate up. He nodded as Dani kept talking through her father. "We've been keeping a closer eye on her since her accident." Lancer nodded.
"I like you Mr. Fenton. In fact we have been needing another few chaperones for Friday's dance. How would you and your wife like to chaperone?" Dani stammered.
"I mean… we're very busy these days…." Lancer stood.
"I think it would be best for Danielle if you and your wife took a greater interest in her life. I know I'm just her teacher but I'm worried about her, she's not living up to the potential all her teacher know she has." Lancer's open faith in her surprised Dani and she nodded.
"Maybe you're right." It slipped out of her before she realized what Lancer would take it as. He smiled.
"Good I look forward to seeing you and your wife on Friday." Dani walked Jack out of Lancer's office swearing in her head the whole way. She'd just agreed to her parents chaperoning her first dance, and her father wasn't even going to remember the conversation. Paulina hadn't remembered the few seconds she'd been possessed. She'd been in her dad's head for almost an hour. They were outside the school, Dani had pulled out her father's phone and texted her mother about chaperoning the dance. But just as she hit send a roar sounded from the football field and her ghost sense went off through her father's mouth. Dani didn't hesitate in exiting her father, invisible, leaving him reeling on the sidewalk as she raced off to find something she could hit.
