So maybe Dani was being petty getting back at Paulina but honestly Paulina had been bullying Dani and Tanya since middle school and she was sick of putting up with it. It seemed like she wasn't the only one who'd had enough of the bullying from the popular kids. Dani had tripped Paulina invisibly, not much more, but each of the other popular kids seemed to have run into some kind of inexplicable trouble while picking on someone. It seemed that Dash, Star and Kwan had all been attacked by something none of them could see. Sam shot Dani a searching look. She shook her head, looking around to make sure no one was listening.
"What? It wasn't me." No one was looking at them. Dani disappeared from sight. Across the room as Dash made to sit his arms jerked forward, the contents of his tray going flying all over Paulina who shrieked. Dani rematerialized as Tanya tried to hide her snorts of laughter. "That? That was me." Dani said with a satisfied grin. Tanya snorted.
"That was hilarious!" Sam sent them a disapproving stare but spotted Lancer and Tetslaff coming into the cafeteria and quickly made himself scares. He returned a few minutes later carrying a box that was making a suspicious croaking noise. Dani raised an eyebrow at him.
"What are you doing?" She asked. Sam shifted a little guiltily.
"Totally not stealing frogs from the bio lab while Lancer and Tetslaff are busy." Tanya had left to dump her tray and Sam was bust with the box of frogs so Dani got no warning as two full cartons of chocolate milk were dumped over her head. She spluttered as Sam looked up and glared behind her. A familiar laugh told Dani exactly who had just done that.
"You looked a little thirsty Fenton!" Paulina sneered laughing as she made her way out of the cafeteria. Dani swiped her hand over her eyes, trying to see past the milk all over face. Sam stepped forward and wiped off Dani's face with a napkin so she could see, before handing her another to clean herself up. She was seething when Tanya returned to the table.
"That was brutal! I wonder how she'd react to finding a few frogs in her locker." Tanya suggested handing over a few napkins she'd grabbed on her way back from the trash.
"Or maybe twelve, in her hair!" Sam stepped in front of the box of frogs.
"Oh no! You are not using innocent amphibians for some petty revenge." Before he could protest further Dani's eyes had flashed green and she, and an instant later the box of frogs, had vanished. Sam swore under his breath making to follow Paulina, since following an invisible Dani wasn't really possible, but he slipped in the puddle of chocolate milk on the floor and stumbled right into Tanya, taking them both to the ground. Scrambling to their feet they raced out. Sam found his box of frogs and wound up between Dani Phantom and a ghost he didn't recognize, but Dani called him Poindexter so the best bet was that the legend of locker 724 was true. Either way they'd been doing this long enough to know when to get out of the way.
By the time things settled and they caught up to Dani Paulina had already run off, several frogs tangled in her hair, and the other ghost was nowhere in sight. Dani was standing in front of her locker which was open. She closed it quickly as they approached. Dani smiled at them but Sam couldn't help but feel like something was off. Why was Dani wearing sunglasses, she almost never did, though she kept a pair on her since the accident in case her eyes turned green and refused to turn back. It had happened a few times.
"Dani are you ok?" Sam asked and Dani grinned.
"Peachy keen, why?" Tanya raised an eyebrow.
"Peachy keen? Whatever, what happened to that other ghost?"
"That party pooper? He was cruising for a bruising, so I sent him packing." Tanya and Sam stared at Dani blinking for a moment. But Dani just grinned, swinging her bag onto her shoulder with a smile. "We better get stepping to class, we're gonna be late." She practically skipped off and Sam turned to Tanya.
"What the fuck?" It was the only thing he could think of to say. Tanya shrugged.
"I have no idea."
Sidney Poindexter hadn't had an easy life, much less an afterlife. He'd been tortured by his classmates, and eventually killed at school, though he never knew if that had been intentional or not. For the first few years after his death he'd been able to look out the mirror he'd died against and help others who were victims of bullying but then his locker had been shut and hadn't been opened in years. He'd spent that time lounging in misery in a black and white approximation of Casper High as he knew it.
He hadn't expected the mirror to start working again, but it had. And then it had opened like a portal and he'd finally been able to slip out of his hell, into a very different school than the one he knew. It was pretty nifty honestly, or would have been if not for the rampant bullying problem. One of the perpetrators of whom seemed to be the Halfa. It had been big news in the Ghost Zone when she came on the scene a few months back. Half human, half ghost. There was only one other in either world, or at least so he'd heard. He hadn't actually met him, but the Halfa girl seemed to be using her powers to bully others. He just couldn't let that stand. He'd been bullied by both girls and boys, and honestly the boys were physically cruel but the venom words from the women hurt more than any bruise. So he'd overshadowed her, or that had been the intent. It seemed that overshadowing a Halfa essentially caused a body swap.
She was now Sidney Poindexter, trapped and tortured in the old halls of Casper High, while he was free as a bird. He had it made in the shade as Dani Fenton, with a few simple acts of kindness he'd gotten in with the in crowd. The only outward appearance of his possession of her body was the eyes, hers, in human form, had been blue. His were gray and for some reason they remained that way. He had no idea if that was a side effect of the body he was inhabiting being that of a Halfa or just overshadowing in general, he'd never done it before.
He was so busy soaking up the adulation from his new friends he didn't realize that Dani's friends, the spooky boy and girl with the dreads and tech obsession, were growing suspicious. If he had to guess later he'd say that the last straw that totally gave him away was when he showed up to school the next day, having dressed Dani like a proper lady. The top was long sleeved with a high collar and slightly puffy sleeves. He'd done up her hair like the girls he'd seen around school, a high ponytail with the ends curled. He'd found a pair of red kitten heels in her sister's closet and a long skirt in hot rod red that would do nicely. Just because the body he was in wasn't his preferred gender didn't mean he didn't want to be classy.
Tanya had called him over to the locker's claiming that some poor nerd was being shoved into a locker. So he'd transformed into Dani Phantom, though her ghost powers were effective in human form she was much more powerful in her ghost form. But he found nothing, until Sam snatched him up with a pair of metal gloves that he couldn't phase through and shoved him into a locker, his locker and back through the mirror.
He lost the fight, which was galling since the Halfa was much more powerful than him, he could sense it he just didn't know how to use it. So he tried possessing her again. But that just wound up switching them back. She made her escape through the mirror and he shouted after her that he'd get out eventually. But the other ghost of Casper High were impressed with his supposed victory over the Halfa, since none of them knew it had been her in his body. It looked like his afterlife was finally turning around.
