The next day Dani made a suggestion. If they were to continue facing threats from the Ghost Zone it was likely that at some point they'd have to face them on their own turf. If that was the case they should probably know their way around. With that in mind they set off while Dani's parents were out to make a map of the Ghost Zone. Two days later they'd seen quite a bit of the Zone and made strides in their map. They'd found a few interesting sights. A forested island that from a distance resembled a skull covered in moss that they quickly learned was Skulker's Island, a black and white recreation of Casper High that Dani insisted they avoid like the plague and a towering fortress of red stone. It was oddly empty. Most everywhere else had some kind of ghosts wandering around, be it simple skeletons, incorporeal blobs or more malevolent spirits but this place was darker; the air, such as it was in the Ghost Zone, was closer here almost claustrophobic. They decided it would be a good idea to not actually explore the fortress, Dani and Tanya overruling Sam's curiosity. So they headed off down a frozen pathway, Dani was disappointed to run into a ghost she'd met once or twice before randomly in Amity Park. He was about on the same level of threat as the Box Ghost but in her opinion a bit sadder. His name was Klemper and all he wanted was a friend.
Here in the Ghost Zone it was a little easier to talk to him, since he wasn't freezing people into place so they couldn't leave but when she insisted it was time to leave he was very against the idea. She managed to break the ice easily and trick him into a new lair before floating back into the Spector Speeder. Sam shivered.
"Oh, I've heard about ghosts giving chills before but you are downright frozen." Tanya said with a frown as she fiddled with her PDA, trying to get the new minted Fenton Phones to work as headphones. Sam nodded.
"She's right, you're freezing." Sam said shivering. She frowned.
"That's weird. I don't feel cold." Dani said with a shrug. Sam shook his head and took her hands which were freezing cold to the touch.
"Here, my hands are warm." He said rubbing her ice cold fingers between his palms. Tanya let out a noise of triumph.
"Finally!" Dani could feel the beat of the music from Tanya's Fenton Phones and rolled her eyes as her friend began to wail along with the newest pop hit by Ember McLain. Dani gently pulled her hands free of Sam's.
"I'm gonna need my hands for this." She said covering her ears as Sam snorted. They got most of the way back to Fentonworks before both Sam and Dani told Tanya to stop howling along with the song she was playing on a loop.
"Come on at least mix it up, I know this Ember is the new latest thing but I've only ever heard the one song." Dani said as they snuck out of the lab and up to the kitchen to find a late night snack. Tanya pouted.
"I would but she's only got the one out!" She complained and Sam rolled his eyes.
"Figures mainstream pop would go so viral without even releasing a full album of work." He muttered rolling his eyes as Dani handed him a bottle of water. She tossed Tanya a soda bottle and it bounced off her shoulder, she was busy dancing around to the Ember song. Dani rolled her eyes. Tanya and Sam left soon after, Dani was kinda glad, she didn't think she could handle another round of Ember's song. So she was disappointed when she heard it again blaring from Jazz's room. She rolled her eyes and pulled up her i-tunes and began blasting Dumpty Humpty to compete with Jazz's music. Usually her sister took that as the hint to turn down her music btu this time Jazz seemed to take it as a challenge and turned up Ember's song. Dani wrinkled her nose and began to loudly sing along with the Dumpty Humpty song.
"Turn out the lights!" Dani blinked as the light spilling from Jaz's window went out. She faltered in her singing and a moment later the light came back on. Dani frowned. Why had Jaz turned out her light? She was distracted from that when Jazz again turned up that same song. Dani took back up the Dumpty Humpty song and again when she hit the chorus Jazz's light went out. Dani frowned. But this time kept singing along with the song. As she kept singing she jumped as the door to her room creaked open. Jazz was standing there looking a bit out of it. Dani stopped singing and Jazz blinked eyes coming back into focus.
"What am I doing in here? Oh yeah, turn down your music Dani, I'm trying to listen to this new song." Dani rolled her eyes.
"Or we could both put on headphones." Dani suggested in a slightly sing song voice. Jazz's eyes glazed slightly and she nodded.
"Headphones." She stayed standing there. Dani stayed silent for a moment but Jazz stayed in the doorway looking slightly glassy eyed. Dani cleared her throat and Jazz's eyes cleared again. "Right headphones." She headed back out of Dani's room shaking her head slightly. Dani frowned and turned to her computer. She pulled up her chat and began to type.
'Sam, Tanya, you up?'
'Of course, I am a creature of the night after all.' Came Sam's reply. Tanya's took a minute.
'Only because I love you.' Dani snorted and punched up a video call. Sam answered first still wearing his usual outfit. Tanya answered after a solid minute. She looked exhausted and was wearing a too large t shirt and a pair of cloth shorts. She glared at Dani.
"I know you're dead on the inside but some of us still need sleep Dani." Tanya deadpanned and Dani grinned.
"Sam, are you still wearing the Fenton Phones?" Dani asked and Sam went a little pink.
"Well… yeah. I thought they made great techno goth earrings, without breaking mom's stupid rule about me getting my ears pierced." He said and Dani nodded.
"Tanya are you?"
"Did you call us to tell us something or to ask about the invention you stole from your dad?" Tanya asked rubbing her eyes grumpily.
"Borrowed, from mom. And technically we're beta testing them. But this is actually a good way to test them." She cleared her throat and sang the line from the Dumpty Humpty song but this time nothing happened. Dani frowned. "I swear I'm not making this up." She told them about what had happened a few minutes earlier with Jazz. Sam tapped his chin with his finger contemplatively.
"Maybe it doesn't work over speakers?" He suggested and Dani wrinkled her nose. She reached over to her phone and flipped through songs for a moment. Tanya rolled her eyes but was too curious to log off the call. She found the song she was looking for and glanced at her door for a minute before she nodded and pushed play. She began to sing along. It was one of the songs Sam had introduced her too, haunting and chilling in both tune and words, the song was meant to mimic a summoning charm, calling people to their doom. All their eyes remained fixed on the door and in a moment it creaked open and there stood Dani's parents, both of whom where blank faced with slightly glazed eyes. Dani stopped singing and cleared her throat. That was enough to break whatever spell had come over her parents. They both blinked and looked slightly confused. Maddie recovered first.
"It's getting late Dani, you should get some sleep." Dani nodded, doing a surprisingly good job of acting like nothing had just happened and sliding her chair slightly in front of her computer to hide Sam and Tanya's surprised reactions.
"Will do mom, I just wanted to go over some homework stuff with Tanya and Sam." Jack nodded at his daughter stepping into her room and pulling her into a quick hug.
"Sleep well Dani bear!" She smiled slightly as they left, Maddie closing the door behind herself. She swiveled her chair back to the computer an eyebrow raised. Tanya pushed her dreads out of her face.
"Yeah, ok that's worth cutting into my beauty sleep for. So can you just like control people?" Dani shrugged at her question.
"No clue. Jazz was turning her light on and off but mom and dad didn't do anything in the lyrics of that last song." Sam had hopped off his chair and ran to his bookshelf pulling down a book from the shelf before crashing back into his chair.
"Tobin's Spirit Guide to the rescue ladies! I was reading this the other day after I finished the obstacle course in Tetslaff's class." Dani raised an eyebrow. Sam grinned. "No one looks twice at a goth reading this shit in public, trust me. But I ran across a similar power the other day. Tobin called it the Calling. It appears in a lot of old ghost stories where there was a voice that lured someone out into the woods and they were never seen again. Sometimes it would mimic the voice of someone the person knew or it would be an unearthly beautiful song. Looks like you got the second option." Dani blushed a dark red.
"You think my singing sounds good?" She asked a little embarrassed. Sam went crimson and Tanya let out a disgusted sound.
"Dani got a new superpower, cool. Is that all or can I sleep now please." Dani laughed.
"Alright I'll let you sleep." Dani said with another chuckle. Sam rolled his eyes and signed off. Tanya grumbled as she signed off too. Dani shut down her computer and changed into her pajamas before flopping down on her bed. She groaned as Ember McLain's song began to play from her sister's room again. Pulling her pillow over her head she couldn't help but think to herself that if she never heard that song again she would be completely content.
