Levi walked back into his room, moving over to the small fishbowl where Henry was swimming.
"I met a human today, Henry," he said to his friend, not expecting an answer, though he usually supplied the goldfish's dialogue for him.
"I know, I know, I can't believe I let her in here either, but she wasn't all bad. I mean, she knew a few manga, even if only the titles. I still can't believe she didn't know TSL though! It's only the greatest ever!"
He looked down at his fish, and decided it couldn't hurt to give him a treat. "Here you go Henry," he said, dropping the small flakes of food in the bowl. "Thanks for putting up with having her in here, you're the best."
He strode over to his closet, deciding to change into his pajamas. Normally with his classes being online he wouldn't need to wear the uniform, but today was a live feed for a lecture, and Lucifer insisted that anytime he was seen for school, he had to wear it.
He didn't mind too much, at least he didn't have to actually go to the school very often. Mostly just for meetings of the council that he couldn't get out of.
He had thought he lucked out today, and now he was sure of it. If he had been at the meeting- he could have been the one that ended up caring for the human.
He gave a shudder at the thought, pulling a hoodie over his head. As he adjusted the top, his eye caught his bookshelves, and thoughts of the human made him frown.
He looked around the room, inspecting every detail. He was the Avatar of Envy after all, so he knew when a nearby human was feeling jealous. It boosted his power, and helped him make better deals with selfish humans. What he couldn't figure out this time, however, was WHY the human had been feeling it.
It had come in flashes, first out in the hall, when he approached them, though it was gone just as quickly. Then again, as she was in his room. But try as he might, he couldn't see what would have caused it.
Not that I mind… he thought with a smile. The small tastes of envy fed into his power, and was something any demon would enjoy. But if he didn't know what caused it, then he couldn't exploit it the next time.
He gave a sigh, and went over to his chair, sitting down and pulling on his headphones. Like there was anything in here to interest a human, he thought. Probably just jealous that she didn't have Mammon all to herself.
Disgusted at the thought, but thinking it made the most sense, especially since she kept defending the bum, Levi let go of all thoughts of the human, and immersed himself in his game.
Kim woke to a pounding on her door. "OY! Human! Get up already!"
She looked up blearily, wondering what time it was. She had a momentary shock looking around the strange room, before she remembered what had happened the day before. Giving a monstrous sigh, she flopped back down to the mattress.
"It wasn't a dream," she mumbled to herself, closing her eyes again.
After a few moments, she realized it was no use- she was awake now- so she rolled out of the bed. She stood, doing a few stretches, when the door opened.
She instinctively grabbed a pillow and held it in front of her. Not that she was naked or anything… but still. The shorts were really short, and the tank was tight- not a sight she wanted to flaunt.
"What the hell?!" she yelped, not happy at all to see Mammon walk into her space. "You don't just waltz in to other people's rooms!"
"If ya'd get up when you're supposed to, then I wouldn't!" he snarled at her, obviously annoyed. "I'm leaving in five minutes, so if ya want to walk with me, ya'd better be ready and downstairs! THE Mammon waits for no human!"
With that, he walked back out, slamming the door behind him.
Kim gaped for a moment, then turned, and hustled to her bag. She could put herself together- at least well enough- in a few minutes, but she'd have to hurry. She dumped her bag out on the bed, and grabbed her red jeans, with a black t-shirt, and a hoodie- just in case.
She grabbed some socks, realizing that they didn't match, but didn't care. She needed a minute to wash her face, and brush her hair.
She wasn't happy to be rushed on her first day, but figured she had met those that mattered the most yesterday, so at least first impressions were done. Doing the best she could on such short notice, she ran out of the room, and downstairs. She got turned around once, but finally found the entrance hall, just as Mammon was walking out the door.
"I'm here, wait up!" she called, and he rolled his eyes, but held the door for her.
"Good thing too, otherwise Lucifer would have been super mad," he told her. "We'll probably still be late though," he said with a shrug, as if it was inevitable.
"Well, it was my fault," she told him, not wanting to antagonize him. "I didn't set my alarm."
"Yeah, that's a good one," he nodded, walking a little faster so that he was in front of her instead of side by side. "That way he'll be mad at you, though knowing him, he'll still say it's my fault."
He laughed a bit, and gave a shrug. "Well, we'll throw you at his mercy, and see if he has any today, though it isn't likely."
"Okay…" Kim replied. Lucifer had said he wouldn't let anything harm me… so that included himself, right? she thought.
As they neared the school, Kim could hear the talk. The others around her weren't exactly subtle or quiet. But when she heard, "What is it wearing?!" she looked around at the other students, and then down nervously at herself.
"Uh, Mammon?" she asked.
"What, human?" he snapped back.
"Am I supposed to be wearing a uniform?" she asked in trepidation. She didn't want to be an embarrassment to Diavolo- most especially on the first day. Not to mention what Lucifer would say.
Mammon glanced back, and Kim frowned at seeing him smirk. "Hmm, now that you mention it, RAD does have a dress code." He chuckled to himself, and Kim felt the butterflies do circles in her stomach.
She thought it a mean joke, but determined to hold her head high. She still didn't think that this qualified Mammon for scumbag status though.
She was rethinking her conclusion as she ran into Lucifer on the stairs as they made their way into the school. She could tell he was upset, but he hid it well as he asked about her morning, and why she felt the need to be out of uniform. She turned to include Mammon in the conversation, only to find him M.I.A…. again.
She gave a sigh. "I apologize Lucifer," she said, giving a slight bow of her head. "I fell asleep without setting an alarm, and had only a minute to get dressed before we left. I honestly didn't even think about a uniform until I got here."
"I suppose that… is understandable," he replied tightly. "We will rectify the situation for tomorrow, but you will have to handle the repercussions for today." He gave her an arched look. "Are you up for it?" he asked. "Demons can be… bullies," he said, for lack of a better word.
"I can handle it," she replied, steeling herself. "Nothing I haven't dealt with before."
He looked unconvinced, but he gave her a nod. "You're quite the celebrity already. Just be sure not to let your guard down. I don't want you to end up getting eaten by some random lesser demon."
She let the smile bloom on her face at the concern, but it came crashing back as he continued. "It would only mean plenty of paperwork for me, and I really don't need that." He frowned down at her. "Just remember, do not trust those that are not vetted by myself or Diavolo."
"All right," she mumbled.
"And here I thought you looked less worried than yesterday," he smirked at her. "Come, we had better get you some supplies, and then I will show you to your first class." She followed him, looking around for Mammon while they walked.
Mammon showed himself eventually, coming in to the classroom once Lucifer had left her there, but he saw that she was in the back left corner, and took a seat in the back right. She wasn't truly surprised, but it still stung a little.
She got plenty of stares, some curious, some hungry, and some hostile. She stuck as close to Mammon as she dared, not wanting to upset him, but not feeling safe either.
The classes themselves weren't much better. Demonic history, poisons, human seduction, temptation… were the introductory classes. It was hard to follow what some of the teachers were even talking about. It was clear, in her mind at least, that they had a LOT to learn about humans. Most of the material felt like it was from hundreds of years ago.
Some of the worst times were when Mammon took her to a classroom, and then left. The others weren't nearly so quiet in their talk then, and she heard every bit of gossip and awful thing that they said about her. Sometimes, even from the teachers. That would stop, when Mammon showed up to collect her, and eventually she began to feel like she would make it to the end of the day.
Then as she left her demonology class- Mammon wasn't waiting for her. She looked around, her hand tightening on her books, asking herself what she should do.
"Isn't that the human everyone is talking about?" she heard a voice say. She glanced over, seeing a pair of seemingly young demons looking at her with evil grins, and she quickly looked away.
"You think it's true what they say, that Mammon is it's babysitter?"
"I think it is… and that works perfectly, wouldn't you say?"
"You mean since he hardly pays attention to anything that isn't money?" they chuckled, and Kim could feel her heartbeat racing, as she looked around frantically.
"Exactly," the other replied. "So we get a very tasty snack, and no one is the wiser."
"And no more pesky human, ruining our school," the first agreed. "Besides, Beelzebub is going to eat it anyways."
Kim hesitated only a moment longer. Mammon had told her straight out, to run or die… and she didn't want to die. So she took off running.
She was pretty sure she knew where the student council room was… the only problem was, she had no idea where she was in relation to it. She would have to run until she recognized something.
She ran down the hall, hearing some curses behind her. She ran for all she was worth, knowing if they caught her, she was as good as dead.
Looking back to see if they were gaining- she didn't see them, but didn't know if that was good or bad. She took the next corner, and plowed right into someone, and would have fallen, if he hadn't steadied her.
For a moment, she thought it was Mammon, but that was because he had a similar color of hair. Once she stopped, and actually looked at him, she realized she had never seen him before, so she yanked herself from his hold.
"Easy there," he said to her, and she stepped back. "That's right, I'm talking to you, the human with the frightened, tormented look on her face that demons love so much. You realize that you're practically screaming to all of them, "Come eat me, I'm simply scrumptious!"
She panted, looking at him with a glare, and he gave a sigh. "Your name is Kimberly, right?" he asked, and she tensed. He bent over, and she scuttled back, worried about what he was doing. She saw him pick up a phone and hold it out to her.
"This is yours isn't it? I think you dropped it when you tried to run through me just now."
"I… I'm sorry," she mumbled, still wary of him. "I didn't see you."
He nodded, and held out the phone. "Here, take it," he offered again.
Kim finally got her senses back, and noticed that the guy was wearing a uniform like all the other students, which meant she couldn't trust him, so she snatched the phone, and stepped back again.
He chuckled. "What's with that look?" he asked. "There's no need to be suspicious of me."
"Oh?" she asked. "Why is that?"
"Because I'm the other human exchange student," he said giving her a smile. "My name is Solomon." He gave a little wave of his hand, not wanting to startle her with a handshake. "Nice to meet you Kimberly, I hope we can be friends."
Kim gave a sigh of relief, then tensed again. "How do you know my name?" she demanded.
"You didn't know that everyone was talking about you?" he asked, chuckling again. "Just being a human here in the Devildom is special enough, but on top of that, you've got an infamous demon like Mammon looking after you as well."
"Yeah, he's doing a smashing job, isn't he?" she gestured around her, pointing out that he wasn't nearby. Doing so gave her another thought about what Lucifer said before about the other exchange student having magic. She narrowed her eyes again and asked, "are you really a human?"
He didn't laugh this time, but put his chin between two fingers, and gave a pensive look. "Good question," he said, "honestly, there are times when even I am not certain."
He closed his eyes, his voice going lower as if he was a narrator for a movie preview. "Long ago, I obtained a ring of wisdom- a gift from a certain someone in a VERY high position. And drunk on its power, I used it to form pacts with seventy-two different demons, becoming a powerful and wicked sorcerer…"
He paused, then looked at her with a sinful smirk. "That is, if you believe the stories people tell about me. Regardless, I am fairly sure that I am indeed still human, though it may not seem like it."
He looked up, as if hearing something, and he gave her a nod. "I'd better get going," he said kindly. "Do you need assistance finding your next class?"
Relieved, Kim nodded gratefully. "I've got something called, Human Cults?" she said, not sure why there would be such a topic here.
"Ah, a look at the ridiculous ploys some people use to get attention from a demon," Solomon replied, as he gestured her to follow him. "I'm in the same class," he said.
"That helps," she replied gratefully.
"Well, we are the only two humans, so we should have each other's backs," he said, walking swiftly, and she rushed to keep up. He glanced over at her again. "I can't help but notice that you aren't wearing a uniform," he continued after a moment. "Are you exempt, or was I fooled into wearing this?" he pointed to his own clothing.
"More like someone "forgot" to tell me about it this morning," she grumbled, and he chuckled, though she did feel better at the idea that the demons would mess with him too.
"As if we don't stand out enough," he sympathized.
She gave him a smile. "I think I'd like to be friends too," she said. "And my friends call me Kim."
"I'd like to reciprocate, but I don't use a nickname," he said as he looked at her.
"It's not a nickname that's important," she replied. "It's that it is what you want your friends to call you. Though we could try Solly if you want a nickname."
The look he gave her was priceless, and she laughed heartily.
Miraculously, Mammon was waiting for her outside the classroom when the class was over, and started walking away the moment she spotted him.
"Bye Solomon!" she said hastily, waving as she gave chase. not wanting to be left behind again. "See you tomorrow… and thanks again!"
"Bye Kim!" he replied, giving her a small smile.
She caught up to Mammon, and walked behind him, feeling much lighter than she had before. Having a friend… well someone who she felt would become a friend, made all the difference in her day.
The class on cults was an eye opener- not because it was interesting, but because it was scary to think that some humans believed such things, and Solomon was quick to assure her that it was accurate, though somewhat rare.
Solomon seemed to handle the Devildom much more easily than she did, and she was hoping to get to spend some time with him, and understand how that happened. Obviously, if Lucifer was correct, he had some type of magic… which was a little unbelievable, but at this point she couldn't reject the idea outright.
She gave a smirk at the thought. No, nothing was impossible anymore… just look where I am!
Before she knew it, she was being led into the student council room, where Lucifer, Diavolo and another man were speaking. Mammon stopped short of going to them, but they looked over, and gave her a greeting.
"It looks like you made it through your first day without being eaten," Lucifer said drolly. "Congratulations. Though there is always tomorrow."
"Your sense of humor still leaves much to be desired," the third man said, though he gave Lucifer a small smile.
"Kimberly," Diavolo spoke, gesturing her over. She came towards them, raising her head to look up at them as she neared. "I'd like for you to meet Barbatos."
"A pleasure, Miss Kimberly," Barbatos offered a hand, and Kim gave it to shake his. But before she could shake, he smoothly brought her hand to his face and pressed his lips to it, even as he gave a slight bow over it.
She had never seen such a thing outside of movies, and she blushed brightly, even as her romantic's heart did a triple bump. "Uh… thank you?" she squeaked, telling herself it hadn't even been an actual kiss, and she should show some dignity.
"So, how was your first day?" Diavolo asked, giving a wide smile. "Lucifer told us about the mishap with the uniform," he continued before she could respond. "Barbatos was able to produce a few extra, so don't worry about a thing."
Barbatos had stepped back, and now held up a bag, and placed it near her. "Please let me know if you need any alterations," he said quietly.
"Oh, thank you very much," she replied, wondering what exactly Lucifer told them. She was fairly certain that he knew what had actually happened, but figured he had told them something else- like she had ripped or soiled it or something.
"Uh, it has been very… enlightening," she continued, getting back to Diavolo's first question. "I feel as if I am learning about an entirely different world."
Diavolo laughed merrily, while the other two merely looked at her. "I suppose that is stating the obvious," she mumbled, getting embarrassed.
"But still welcome," Diavolo replied happily. "You may not realize it, but your feedback will be helping us to understand humans better, and in turn, help humans to understand us as well."
She nodded. "It is a big undertaking, but I am happy to help."
"Excellent!" Diavolo exclaimed happily. He gave her a sly look and asked, "Anything exciting happen today?"
She wondered if he could read her mind, but thought that perhaps they were all expecting something anyway, since Lucifer kept talking about her getting eaten.
"Ah, no," she answered, giving him a grin at his disappointed look. "I've heard the students speaking about me, of course, and not all seem happy that I am here, but having Mammon with me keeps anything bad from happening," she told them.
Lucifer gave her a skeptical look, then his eyes moved over her towards the door where they narrowed on his brother.
Wanting to avoid further questioning… Lucifer was able to glean far too much from her face… she blurt out, "But I was finally able to meet the other human, Solomon? He was in my last class with me, and seems very nice."
"Ah, that's good," Diavolo said, now seeming distracted.
Well, I guess I can't command the demon lord's attention for too long, she thought dryly.
"We had better get going, my lord," Barbatos spoke up, looking at a pocket watch. "You have your meeting starting soon."
"Of course," Diavolo said with a sigh. "We will take our leave then," he said. "Lucifer, Kimberly," he said as he nodded to each of them.
"Diavolo," Lucifer replied, giving a nod of his head. "Barbatos, good to see you, as always."
"Lucifer," Barbatos responded, also with a nod, then he turned to follow Diavolo out the door. "Be sure to take good care of our human friend, Mammon," he said as he passed the second brother.
Again, Lucifer's eyes moved to his brother, his gaze penetrating, and Kim wondered just how much he knew. For all she was aware of, he could have spies all around the school, reporting their every movement, or he could just have supernal abilities that she knew nothing about. Neither thought sat well.
She looked up at him, wondering if he had more to say, or if she should just go. At that moment, he looked down at her, his expression softening slightly.
"So you've met Solomon, have you?" he asked, and she nodded. "Seeing as you are both human, it's fine if you associate with him."
"But?" she asked, sensing something was coming.
He wore a frown, and nodded. "But…" he continued. "Know that he can't be trusted."
"What? Why?" she asked, feeling offended for her new friend, and upset at the thought of him being an enemy, but she hadn't detected any ulterior motives from him earlier.
"He may be a mere human, but he has a ring imbued with wisdom, and he wields powerful magic," Lucifer explained. "He's the type of man who will try to subjugate even a greater demon if he gets the chance."
She frowned. "He mentioned something about a ring, and magic, but he made it sound like it was rumors taking things out of proportion," she pouted.
"They are not rumors," Lucifer said, still frowning down on her. "However, he will not cause you any harm, so there is no reason not to associate with him. Just… be on your guard . Do not answer questions about me, or my brothers."
"All right," she replied, the burden of loneliness weighing again on her shoulders. "Lucifer?" she asked, as he had turned from her, and he stopped, glancing back.
"Yes?"
"Did Diavolo mention anything about me being able to contact my husband?" she asked. "I tried to last night, but my phone is unable to connect."
He gave a smirk. "I doubt your human world technology spans the Devildom," he replied. "He did not make mention of it, but I will ask when I see him next."
She brightened, and gave him a genuine smile. "Thank you Lucifer!" she said happily.
"Yes, yes," he said, waving her off. "I have work to do, so you should head home. You have plenty of studying to do."
She gave him a bewildered expression. "What makes you say that?" she asked, but he merely gave her a sly smile.
"No matter," he answered. "I will see you later, at dinner. In fact, if I am not mistaken, it is your turn to help prepare, with Satan."
"It is?" she asked. "Is there like… a list or something, so I won't be blindsided by things I should know, but am not aware of?" she demanded.
Lucifer looked towards the door, noting that Mammon had snuck out some time before. "I will ensure that you receive one," he told her. "For now, you had better hurry, so you are not walking home alone."
She turned to Mammon, giving a yelp as she noticed he was gone, and ran after him. Lucifer looked down at the bag of uniforms that she left behind, and gave a sigh as he picked it up.
It appears as if Mammon needed a talking to… and punishment for his carelessness. Lucifer smiled as he started thinking of options.
"I'm sorry that I am not much help, Satan."
Satan looked up, forgetting for a moment that the human had even been in the room with him. "It is to be expected," he replied, giving her a shrug.
"It's not that I can't cook," she frowned at the bowl she was stirring. "It's that none of these ingredients are familiar."
"Just follow my directions, and it will be fine," he replied, going back to his cooking, and practically ignoring her.
"Sure, Sous Chef Kim, at your service," she muttered.
"More like apprentice, or dishwasher," Satan replied, causing Kim to glance up in surprise, then look back down dejectedly. Satan gave a sigh, not wanting the human to cry into the batter… it would give it a bad taste.
"Now now, I am just teasing you," he said, lying easily. "You are over beating that batter though," he said, snatching the bowl from her.
"Sorry," she said, feeling like a total failure. "Looks like I need to study up on the local foods as well, or I'll never improve."
"It couldn't hurt," he said, giving another shrug. "There are a few books in the library on the subject…" He almost said he could help her locate them, but quickly shut his mouth. Now that was unexpected... he thought. I don't want a human in the library, bothering me with small talk or questions when I'm enjoying the quiet.
"All right, thanks," she answered, unaware of his internal struggle. She looked around at all of the ingredients that he had on the countertop. "Hey Satan?" she asked.
"What is it?" he responded.
"Do any of you… uh, brothers, know much about the human world?"
Satan dropped the spoon in his hand with a clatter, turning to her- his eyes alight with anger, though his voice was soft and silky. "Why would you ask such a thing?" he asked, his glare having her step back from him.
"Oh, uh…" she stammered, and gulped.
"Well?!" he demanded, his stare unrelenting.
"Uh... I just was thinking that maybe if someone was, they could help me compare these ingredients to those that I am familiar with, in order tohelpmepickitallupfaster!" She spoke so quickly that her words slurred together in the haste, but Satan was able to understand anyway.
His anger wasn't cooling, but he turned back around to the stove, and took some deep breaths. He refused to be the wrathful demon of vengeance that Lucifer always painted him as, though it took huge effort on his part. It would be so much easier to let his wrath free…
However, he would never let anyone or any thing rule him as he used to.
"We have all spent time in the human world before," he said, his voice deceptively calm. "Seducing humans, collecting souls…" He gave a wicked smirk at the distress he could read so easily. "Though it has been some time for all of us."
"Okay, thanks anyway," she peeped, trying to make herself invisible. She couldn't help but feel as if she just avoided death. "Um… what should I do now?" she asked meekly.
"That cupboard there," he said, pointing. "Are the serving bowls. Start filling them and taking them to the table. I will retrieve the dishes, and you can set the places," he continued, as he turned, and glanced at her haughtily. "I assume you know how?"
She looked sheepish. "Forks on the left of the plate?" she said in an asking tone, certain there was more that he was referring to.
"Basic, but correct," he answered, as he started making stacks of dishes for her to take out. "If you cannot fold the napkins correctly, don't try."
"If you show me how you want it, I can recreate it," she suggested.
He rolled his eyes, and turned away.
"I'll learn," she declared stubbornly.
"Hmph," he grunted in response, and it only made her more determined. She grabbed the plates, and headed out to the dining room.
The room was expansive, with a huge table in the center- the only piece of furniture. It easily seated twelve, but had several extra legs, which gave the impression that it would fit multiple leaves in order to expand the seating by double, at least. It was sitting on a vibrant and ornate rug that was deep red.
There was a folded piece of linen on the table, and she placed the centerpieces and candelabras onto chairs in order to straighten the fabric over the table first. She grabbed the fabric to open it, and then noticed that it wasn't a tablecloth, but large napkins, that seemed more like table runners.
She realized that Satan hadn't been kidding about folding the napkins, so she put them aside and started setting the places. She desperately hoped that there weren't specific settings for each of the brothers, though it wouldn't surprise her if there was.
"And how was your first day, Kimberly?" Lucifer asked, though Kim thought he wasn't really interested- merely making small talk.
"Uh, it was just fine, thank you," she replied. She sat with her back straight as a board, trying to show that she was refined enough for such an elegant dinner.
She noted that all of the brothers had changed into other clothes, which showed their individual characters. Lucifer was dressed in a three piece suit, but instead of a jacket, his third piece was a fur lined cape. He was again in black, but for the red of his vest and tie, and a splash of white on his cuffs and collar. He practically oozed power and authority.
Mammon had on designer jeans paired with a black shirt and an expensive looking leather jacket. With his amber colored shades, he looked like a guy ready to hit the town. Asmo was right behind him, his makeup redone to perfection, and his hair perfectly styled, with an outfit that Kim could have sworn came directly from a runway. She didn't think he could look more beautiful than when she saw him earlier, but he did.
On the opposite side and next to her was Beel, looking like he just grabbed clothes to put on, not caring if they even matched. He had on suspenders that were hanging down his hips instead of on his shoulders, and a belt that was so loose, it only stayed on because it was hooked into the belt loops on one side of his pants. Kim liked his jacket though, with the alternating swatches of purple and orange, and the fur lined collar. It looked extremely comfy.
Satan looked preppy- with a sweater, and a jacket that was hanging on his shoulders- which seemed to suit him perfectly. And Leviathan's jeans and hoodie was probably the closest to her own style- especially with the huge headphones draped on his neck.
As she looked around, she wondered yet again when she would meet the seventh brother. She had yet to even hear his name… which was most odd.
But when Beel had come in and seen the extra place setting next to him, he looked so unhappy, that Kim decided she would need to ask in a more private setting. This did not seem the place.
"That is good to hear," Lucifer continued, and Kim shook herself slightly to pay better attention. "Though, I must confess that I heard that you had a run in with some of the younger demons before your last class."
"You did?!" she squeaked, and looking around the table suspiciously, at who might have told him. The only one she was sure hadn't, was Mammon, as he was looking very uncomfortable as well.
"Indeed," Lucifer continued, glancing over to Mammon with an evil smile. "And that you ran from them, heading directly to the greater demon's classes instead." He continued to cut his food, even as he spoke, and Kim was a nervous wreak.
"And I asked myself, why would the human run there? It was as if she hadn't heard a single warning that she was given, and simply wanted to be eaten right away… " He turned again to his brother. "Do you have any thoughts on the subject, Mammon?"
"It's my fault, for not waiting for him," Kim blurted out. "I just got scared, and wasn't thinking straight."
"Oh?" Lucifer replied, his smile growing slightly. "And why were you not with the human, Mammon?" he asked his brother. His gaze snapped to her, and told her to keep her mouth shut, but Kim was never good at listening to sense when she felt someone else was being threatened.
"I said, it was my fault!" she said firmly, her voice rising in her anxiety. She could feel the stares of all the brothers on her, and realized that she had shot out of her seat as well. But, now that she made a scene, she was determined to finish it.
"I forgot some things, and Mammon went back for them," she explained, her nerves making her talk loud and fast. "But then those demons started talking about eating me, and so I did what Mammon said, and ran. I just got lost, because I don't know my way around well enough yet!"
Lucifer frowned at her, and Kim sank back into her seat, feeling foolish. "Obviously you can see now why it is important to stay with Mammon, can't you?" Lucifer asked her, none too gently.
"Yes," she answered sullenly. She looked down at her plate, and saw that there was nothing left on it, but traces of the food. She looked to her left, and saw that Beel's plate had "magically" refilled. She was too tired to even bother making a fuss about it.
Though she made a mental note to not sit next to him in the future, unless the food looked scary.
"May I be excused?" she asked, and though Lucifer looked her up and down, he seemed to find no reason to refuse her request.
"Very well," he replied. "Oh, and you may be pleased to note that you may call your husband this evening," he added.
Kim whirled around, a large grin on her face. "I can?!" she exclaimed. "When?!"
"Your phone will only work between seven and eight in the evening and only on Tuesdays," he said, his voice staying stern. "This is a privilege, and can easily be rescinded."
"Absolutely!" she cried, giving a whoop. "Thank you, thank you, Lucifer!"
"It was Lord Diavolo's doing," he said, his face settling into a smirk at her behavior. Typical human antics, he thought. "Be sure to give him your gratitude tomorrow for this, as well as for sending over the uniforms that you left at the school."
"Oh, geez, I totally forgot!" Kim called out, even as she started for the kitchen.
"Leave the dishes on that cart there," Satan called out, and Kim stopped in her tracks and looked around. Sure enough, there was a cart, and Asmodeus had stood, and was placing his empty dishes on it.
"We do have domestic help, but only while we are at RAD," Asmo said with a careless shrug. "So we leave the dishes for them to handle in the morning."
Kim frowned. "So we make our own dinners, but don't clean up?" she asked.
"That's right," Asmo answered. He finished what he was doing, and sauntered out of the room.
Kim looked after him, then turned back. "I don't mind cleaning up," she offered.
"You are already miles behind in your tasks," Lucifer replied. "One who fails at RAD cannot have phone privileges."
Feeling as if she were back in high school, Kim set her dishes down. "Yes, sir," she murmured. "I'll start right away."
She turned to leave the room, hearing him reply with an affirmative "hmm." She could also hear "the human" in a muttered tone, and a few laughs, that she was sure was at her expense.
She walked towards the stairs, moving beyond them, into the corner where her room was. As little as she knew so far, she was certain that Lucifer meant what he said, and would restrict her phone time if she wasn't doing well in her classes.
Just from the notes she took today, she knew she would have to work at least twice as hard as the others in order to do even remotely well.
She went through her door, slamming it shut behind her. I'm a grown woman, I don't need this crap! she thought angrily. Suddenly back in school with an entire campus that either hates me, makes fun of me, or literally wants to EAT me.
Her hands clenched, even as her anger focused, and shifted to stubbornness. I'll show him, she promised herself. I'll show Lucifer that there is more to humans- to me- than he knows!
Beel looked at Satan strangely. Here they were, getting another lecture about the safety of the human, and suddenly Satan smiled.
Not a big smile, that would have been really odd. But still, this was an actual smile, though small. It wasn't one of the fake smiles that Satan usually wore. Honestly, Beel couldn't remember the last time he had seen Satan smile.
There was the sound of a door slamming, though it sounded soft because of the distance. Levi also gave Satan a look. The human was obviously upset, he thought. And Satan is reaping the benefits…
He ignored Lucifer, and began wondering how he could get the human to feel his sin again. It had been such euphoria, having those feelings coming straight to him. The problem as he saw it, was that she had felt that way when in his room. And while he wanted the feelings again… he didn't want the human in his room.
Levi glanced at Satan again, knowing exactly what he was enjoying. It isn't fair… he thought mutinously.
Lucifer felt a swell of pride, but the only outward sign he showed was a slight raise of his eyebrow. He ordered Mammon to his office later, for punishment for leaving the human, and he gave a delighted smirk.
Ah, the swelling of pride in the human, he concluded at the feelings. Delightful. He stood to retire to his office, setting his plate on the cart where it belonged. This is turning out to be a rather enjoyable evening, he thought as he began thinking of which punishment he would inflict on his brother.
