Kim set an alarm on her D.D.D. for five minutes before seven. She knew she was going to have a hard time concentrating on her school work, but this way she at least wouldn't be worrying about checking the time every few minutes, worrying about missing her chance to call home.
She started several of her subjects, plowing through the homework, though she didn't understand some of it. She figured at least it was getting done.
Remembering her conversation with Satan earlier, she decided to go and find the library, and pick a few books that could help her acclimate. Perhaps there were beginner books- meant for children or lesser demons that could be instrumental to her learning more of her temporary home.
She went around the first floor with no luck, so she headed up the stairs.
Library… where are you? she thought, feeling like an idiot. She should have simply asked, but she didn't even know where the others' rooms were, so she could only guess at who she would come across.
Looking at her D.D.D, she realized she didn't have much time, so she stopped, and looked at the doors around her in the hallway. Giving a shrug, she walked over to the closest door, and knocked.
The door opened, and she gulped, even as she looked up… and up, into the face of Beelzebub.
"What do you want, human?" he asked, giving her a skeptical look.
Kim tried to talk, but this was the demon that everyone assured her would eat her if she were alone with him for any stretch of time. Added to that, he looked like he had been working out- and she had a very understandable, and base reaction to seeing him covered in sweat and in a sleeveless tee.
"The… uh, l- library?" she asked, stammering slightly. "I… I can't find it."
"Next hallway over, open door in the middle," he told her. His hand came up to wipe at his face. He gave her another strange look, and then shut the door on her without another word.
She let out the breath she had been holding, still a little dazed at her reaction to him. She headed off to find the library while giving herself a lecture about staring too hard at demons that would gladly kill and eat her.
Beel heard another knock on the door, and rolled his eyes. Like he needed another look at the human right now, she had already stirred his ever present appetite before, so much so that he started to drool a little. And now she was back? Not good.
He told himself that the human wasn't for eating, as he walked over to the door and opened it, only to find Asmo on the other side.
"Asmo?" he asked, frowning in confusion.
"What happened here Beel?" Asmo purred, and he looked into the room, though Beel couldn't figure out what he was looking for.
"What are you talking about?" Beel asked.
"I had a strange feeling a little bit ago, and came looking for the cause," Asmo explained, though Beel still didn't understand. "Was the human here?"
"She came by, asking where the library was," Beel answered.
"I see…"Asmo responded, looking Beel up and down. "And you spoke to her- wearing that?"
Beel glanced down, frowning yet again. "You always think something is wrong with what I'm wearing, Asmo," he griped. "But these are workout clothes, not a fashion statement."
"Hmm, yes, and they don't leave much to the imagination," Asmo said, his voice sounding flirtatious, though Beel thought he always sounded like that. "I mean, just look at those rippling muscles… I'm feeling a little worked up myself."
Beel gave his brother a deadpan look, then turned around, slapping the door shut behind him.
Asmo smiled, having gotten all the information he needed, and turned back towards his own room. Then, thinking better of it, decided to pay the human a visit. He felt he needed a little pick-me-up, and figured it would be easy to get her thinking whatever thoughts had pulled him to her, especially since he knew now that she was open to them.
And it should be fun… he thought with a gleam in his eye, and a smile on his face.
Kim just stared at the library, and her heart gave a twinge in envy. She had thought Levi's bookshelf that spanned his wall impressive, but this? This was on a whole other level.
All four walls were floor to ceiling shelves, and she smiled as she spotted a rolling ladder that was on a track and circled the whole room.
There were several large wing-backed chairs, and a massive fireplace, though there wasn't a fire burning now.
She knew she would be coming back here, until she had at least perused all the shelves. Who knew what treasures she would find in here? And if it was a good place to keep her distance from the others? She might just stay to read.
She turned to her right, and did a quick scan of the shelves. It didn't look like they were organized by a catalog, nor in alphabetical order by either title or author. She wondered how they found what they were looking for, as she moved on to scan more shelves.
She jerked upright and whirled, at hearing the door shut. And she gulped as she saw Asmodeus in the door frame, giving her a saucy smile.
"Um, hello," she said, trying not to show her nerves. "If… If I'm in your way, I can come back another time…" she stammered.
Amso looked around the room, with disinterest. "You think I came here for books?" he asked, giving a chuckle. "Now I don't mind reading of course, but who has the time? With beauty like mine, I can't keep it hidden away. Don't you agree?" he asked.
She looked confused. "That you're beautiful, or that you need to show yourself off?" she asked.
He grinned and laughed. "Both, of course."
Kim wondered how he could seem to fill up the room, though he was only a few inches taller than she was, and about as slender. But, she felt crowded just the same. What had seemed a huge library just moments ago, now felt like a tiny room.
"I don't know that you need to show off," Kim said, trying to keep talking as she figured out what to do. "With beauty like yours, you probably have to fight everyone off with a stick."
Asmo smiled, genuinely this time. "Why thank you," he said. "No one compliments me anymore around here, so I usually have to compliment myself." He gave her a look, that she didn't quite understand. "And what brought you in here?" he asked. He had come because he was bored, but he hadn't expected to be enjoying himself.
She did just as he expected, looking back to the shelves and telling him of her need for some reference materials to help her understand the Devildom. He used the distraction to move closer, barely making a sound as he came up behind her.
"So that's the plan, for now," she finished, turning back to him, to find him extremely close. She jolted back, only to find herself stopped by the bookshelf, and he cocked his head to the side, and gave her a curious look.
"Do I make you nervous?" he asked.
"Yes," she replied, without any hint of playing coy.
"And why is that?" he asked, pleased and yet surprised that she was so honest with him.
"Because…" she started, not wanting to say it.
"Go on," he urged, stepping closer.
"Because everyone says they are going to eat me," she said, as she tensed, thinking the strike would come. What was surprising, was that he seemed to deflate, and then pout at her.
"Eat you?" he asked with a frown, as he sighed. "I suppose that makes sense, since I am a demon, and you are a human." He reached forward, and she froze.
He trailed his hand from her shoulder and down her arm, his touch extremely light. "But there are so many other fun things I could do with a human instead…" he said seductively. "Don't look away, look at me," he cooed, as she looked around for escape.
He could tell she was confused, but she didn't seem scared any longer, and that was progress. If he could simply charm her, then he was certain he would have her telling him all her secrets, and he would be able to produce lust in her any time he needed a boost in the future.
"Come on, pretty human, look at me," he murmured.
She did indeed look at him, but she appeared so baffled that it threw him for a loop. And just as suddenly, her D.D.D. started making an awful noise.
"Oh!" she cried, pulling it out and turning off the alarm. "I've got to go!" she said, ducking past him and practically running for the door. "Sorry, but I need to go call my husband!" she called back to him.
Asmo pursed his lips as he stared after her. He usually didn't have to work this hard to produce lust in someone else. Usually he just had to enter the room. This human however, was proving to be a challenge. And damned if it didn't get him excited at the thought of winning.
Kim ran back to her room, only getting slightly turned around this time instead of lost. She ran to her bed, and picked up her phone, unplugging it from the charger cord. She was so excited to finally share everything that had happened over the past couple of days with someone who would think it was as crazy as she did.
She waited as it rang and rang, and finally went to voice mail. She frowned, and dialed again with the same results. Pulling it down from her ear, she quickly sent out a couple of rapid-fire texts, letting Jon know that she only had this one chance to talk each week, and she needed him to call her back asap.
After waiting a few minutes, and not getting a reply, she decided to just get out everything, so she called him back, and let the voice mail pick up.
"Hey honey, it's me. Sorry to leave what will be a bunch of messages, but I just had to tell someone! This is not an internship, and since there is someone staying at the house by now, I'm sure you've realized it! This is the craziest place, and I know you're going to think I am certifiable, but these people aren't people. They are actually demons!
"I'm in this place where they live, they call it the Devildom, and apparently there are angels too, I'm not really certain, but they wanted to have the three realms like, uh, have better relations-"
She heard the beep as the message was cut off, and immediately redialed, waiting for the voicemail to start again.
"Yeah, so like I was saying, there are only two humans here, and the other is this guy Solomon. Apparently, he's got this ring…"
She didn't bother counting how many voicemail messages she left, she just kept going until it was all out, and she felt much better. They were a team, and now as she felt like he was actually on her side, she no longer felt alone.
She flopped over on her back, putting the phone on her nightstand. Another week now, until she could talk to him, but she had gotten what she needed for now. Hopefully that meant he would have some time to process all the information and be ready to talk next week.
She got up, intent on taking a shower and going to bed. She knew it was still early, but she was exhausted, and ready for a full night's sleep.
The alarm woke him, and Jon stumbled out to his game room in order to log into his system. He and his buddies were part of a raid tonight, and he didn't want to miss it. Since their group included some friends in other states, the time difference made it difficult, but not impossible- especially since he didn't have to work now.
He couldn't believe his good fortune in having Kim going on this internship. Not only was she getting a foot in to the newest and most secretive company around, but they were paying him AND having some babe stay at the house to compensate for her being gone.
So I told a couple of white lies, and said that Kim did everything, he said to himself as he grinned, remembering meeting Sitri when she showed up to take over Kim's jobs. Now I was finally able to quit that stupid job, and focus on the fun things.
He pulled out his phone, checking if the others were ready. He noticed that he had voicemail, and he rolled his eyes. Telemarketers, he thought, as he deleted the voicemails without bothering to listen to them.
Then, seeing the alert for new texts, he opened that up. Only can talk on Tuesdays? he thought as he read it. He sent a reply, saying he'd be ready for next time and sorry to have missed her. Then he put his phone down, smiling as he put on his headset.
A week without worrying about her nagging me? he thought, delighted. It just gets better and better.
Levi stewed as he sat at the table and picked through his breakfast. He was seriously getting annoyed, at both Mammon and his brother's stupid new pet. He had tried to get his money back, to no avail. Then when he had a concrete- no fail plan to get it returned, the ridiculous human wouldn't go along!
And all the times that he pointed out what a piece of garbage Mammon was, even when- especially when!- Mammon had done something mean to the human, the idiot just seemed to feel bad for him!
How does that make sense at all?! he grumbled to himself. At this rate, he would never see his money again, which meant that he didn't have a cushion any longer. True, he could still get the anime he wanted, and the manga, and even the box set he had complained to Mammon about.
But without getting back the money he loaned, he'd have to use his impulse stash of Grimm. Which meant that if he saw something completely awesome on Akuzon, he wouldn't be able to BUY IT!
The thought twisted his features, and he stabbed down into his blackberry waffles with poison syrup. It was normally one of his favorites, but he just couldn't enjoy them. He'd think of what he could spend the money on, and he'd get angry all over again.
It's not fair! he seethed.
He glanced up from under his hair, seeing Mammon sit down at the table across from him, the human next to him, and it set his teeth grinding as he sneered.
"Good morning," Kim practically sang as she followed Mammon to the table. No one replied, as Beel had his mouth full, and Levi was glaring at her.
She knew he wanted something from her, but she had a bad feeling that it involved doing something awful to Mammon, and she didn't want to anger her guardian. So whenever Levi started going on about how awful Mammon was, she felt she had to defend him. She didn't mean to make him angry with her.
So, she decided to try to cheer him up, and just hope he'd let it go.
"I LOVE waffles," she said, as she looked for the syrup. "If I could eat like Beel, I would take all the waffles, and no one else would get any!"
Beel gave her a wide eyed stare, and she wondered why he was so surprised at her words. She looked over to Mammon, noticing him eye her speculatively with a smirk on his face, and she couldn't help feeling like she had accomplished something.
She found the little pitcher of syrup and began to pour it over her food when Mammon snatched it out of her hands, and poured the small remaining amount over his own. He gave her a shrug and dug in to his breakfast.
She looked around the table, seeing another pitcher at the opposite end, and stood up to go for it. She came back to her seat ready to load her waffles when Levi pointed his fork at her, and shouted, "HEY!"
She froze, wondering what was happening.
"You piece of trash, Mammon," Levi growled, and Kim turned to look at Mammon, and noticed that he had her bag in his hands. Her head cocked to the side as she tried to process what she was seeing, and wondered what was going on.
"What's wrong Levi?" Beel asked after he swallowed.
"Mammon was stealing from the human!" Levi accused. "As if stealing from your brothers wasn't enough! I can't believe you!"
"WHAT?!" Mammon exploded. "I wasn't stealin'!"
"What's all this commotion about?" Satan asked in a bored tone as he and Asmo brought plates to the table.
"Apparently our scumbag brother has fallen so low that he felt the need to steal from the human," Asmo told him.
Mammon dropped the bag like it was on fire. "D-don't be stupid," he sneered at Asmo. "Ya got it all wrong!"
"Oh really?!" Levi continued to glare at him, though his face showed his triumph over his brother. "So what, you were leaving the human a present?!"
"Of- of course not!" Mammon shot back.
"I watched you," Levi continued. "You took all the syrup so that she had to get up to get more, and when she did, you went straight for her bag, sticking your hand inside! I watched you do it with my own eyes!"
"Whaddya mean?! No I didn't!" Mammon snapped as he slapped the table with both palms and surged to his feet.
"Sounds like you have been caught red-handed Mammon," Lucifer said as he walked into the room with a platter of waffles. He gave his younger brother a glare, noting to himself that the human looked frozen at what was happening around her.
"Totally expected from the biggest scumbag in the Devildom," Asmo commented from his own chair. He glared at Mammon as well. "You give all of us a bad name!"
"So, how should we execute him?" Satan asked, giving his brothers a happy grin.
"Oh please, give me a break," Mammon muttered as he rolled his eyes. "I wasn't tryin' to steal nothin'! The bag was open, and stuff was going to fall out, so I was closin' it! I was bein' nice!"
The other brothers all rolled their eyes and scoffed at this, and Kim looked around to each of them. It didn't seem as though any of them believed a word Mammon was saying.
"It's clear that you're lying," Lucifer said, as he sat at the head of the table. He tapped a finger on his chin as the corners of his mouth tilted upwards. "Now what would be a fitting punishment for such a crime?" he asked.
"I. Ain't. Lying." Mammon crossed his arms and stared back at his older brother, then around the table at the others. "Why would I steal from this…human anyway?!" he asked. "If she actually had some money, I would have easily tricked her out of it by now!"
Kim just stared down at her plate, the waffles not nearly as appetizing now. She just sat, listening to them argue around her. Mammon finally got so fed up that he said he didn't need them, and that he'd do much better on his own.
He stormed off without another word, and they all heard the front door slam behind him.
"Sorry about that Kimberly," Lucifer spoke in a pleasant tone. "This actually happens quite often, you see. Mammon will be back in no time."
"Why?" she asked, and the brothers all looked at her in confusion.
"What do you mean why?" Lucifer asked, uncertain of her question.
"Why would he come back?" she asked, as she stood and grabbed her bag, her food untouched. She sailed out of the room, suddenly afraid of what would come in the aftermath of her outburst.
But, demons or not… she didn't blame Mammon one bit for leaving. She would have done the exact same thing. Curiosity had her looking through her bag as she went back to her room. There really wasn't anything in there to steal- unless Mammon wanted her homework, which she doubted.
As her hand closed around a small tube, she brought it out and stared at the item in her hand.
It was her chap-stick.
Actually, it was the chap-stick that she had lost yesterday, and had moaned about not having all during the day.
She frowned as she made it into her room and sat on her bed. She had searched through her bag several times the day before, hoping that it had just fallen into the wrong pocket or something, but she knew it hadn't been in there. She had dumped it out upside down, emptied the entire thing.
Which only meant one possibility. Mammon had put it back in there for her.
She didn't know whether he had originally taken it or had merely found it, and honestly, she didn't care. The fact was, that he had heard her bemoan its absence, and had put it back for her to find. He hadn't been lying when he said he was doing something nice.
Kim just sat on her bed, grinning like a fool. It wasn't much in the grand scheme of things, but she felt like she had gotten over the first major hurdle with Mammon, and they might be on the way to being friends… or at least civil with each other. He might even start using her name instead of calling her "the human" all the time.
She heard the knock on her door, Satan telling her to walk to RAD with him that morning, so she gathered her stuff, and headed out.
Her classes were the same as the day before, but this time, no one bothered her. It was a revelation that she could feel completely alone- even lonely- when she had what appeared to be a nice looking guy sitting next to her the whole day.
As nice as he looked, however, Satan didn't say a word, and yet kept all the lesser demons in her classes silent. Even some of the teachers seemed intimidated, or angry that he was there. She wondered why they hadn't acted like this when it was Mammon that was with her.
Perhaps Mammon didn't care what they said or did, and they took advantage of it. Or perhaps they just weren't scared of him.
That can't be it, otherwise they would have done something before… she thought. She turned it over, again and again in her mind, hardly paying attention to the lectures. One thing she was certain of however… she wanted Mammon back.
He may have bemoaned her presence, and insulted her to a degree. But even that was better than feeling like she was not worth speaking to- as she did with Satan.
Maybe he's not a snob… maybe he's shy? she thought, always willing to look on the bright side of things. She glanced over to at him, should I try to talk to him? He felt her eyes on him and turned to give her a glare.
Perhaps I'll try during lunch… she thought, whipping her head back to face the front of the classroom.
Kim did her best to concentrate after that, and even took some notes, once she realized that that was what Satan was doing.
However, class after class was the same, and she began to feel like she was going crazy by the time her lunch break came.
She followed Satan as she had been throughout the morning, wondering what she should say in order to start a conversation with him. She tried several options to herself, rejecting each one in turn. She didn't realize that she wasn't paying attention to where they were going until Satan spoke.
"This should do."
She looked up in surprise, first at the words, and then at seeing where they were. Satan had led her away from RAD, and towards a small cafe. He opened the door for her, giving her a stare when she didn't move.
Kim went through the door quickly, not wanting to make him mad. She looked around in anticipation, excited to see what a cafe in the Devildom would be like.
She was slightly disappointed that it looked pleasantly normal- of course, the menu differed, but the atmosphere was just as she would have found back home. Either the human world had some influence in the Devildom… or vice versa. She found she was curious enough to ask.
"So Satan…" she began as he led her up over to a table, and gestured for her to sit. "This is very similar to cafes back home."
"All right."
He pulled a menu from a holder and placed it in front of her. She looked up at him in question, as he hadn't sat down.
"Are you going to join me?" she asked, and he rolled his eyes.
"I'd like to enjoy myself at some point today, so no." She frowned, looking down at the menu. "Don't fret. I'll be in the next booth, so no one will bother you. However I will spend the break as I prefer, not in idle chitchat."
"Oh… okay," she replied. She couldn't really blame him, since he most likely would have had plans, but was saddled with watching her for the day. She didn't want to seem ungrateful.
Sitting there, looking over the menu, she began thinking of what Mammon would be saying if he were there instead. Scratch that, he'd have ditched me back at RAD, she thought. I'll have to just get used to entertaining myself, maybe bring a book to school with me to read during breaks, though I'll want to leave RAD for lunch again, this is really nice.
She nodded, thinking it a smart idea. She probably could use the time to study, but knew herself well enough to think it unlikely. Then the server came over, and she forgot her troubles for a little while as she perused the menu.
