Dr. Megan Hunt sighed as she rolled over in her bed yet again. Her stomach was churning and she really just wanted to fall back to sleep. She glanced at the clock on her bedside table. 6:27 am. At least it was a Sunday and she didn't need to be to work; however it was her last day with Lacey before she went back to Todd's and she didn't want to spend the day lying in bed. After a few more minutes Megan threw the blanket off of herself and slowly sat up in bed. She took a couple of deep breaths as her head spun slightly and her stomach continued to churn ominously.
"What the hell is wrong with me?" Megan questioned the empty room as she tried to find a cause for her stomach's discontent. She had felt fine yesterday and had spent the day with Lacey and Peter enjoying a day at the Museum of Art, followed by an early dinner and an evening movie at the theater. She had gone to bed feeling a little extra tired, but had chalked it up to the busy week and the long day of activities. She didn't think that she'd eaten anything out of the ordinary, but knew that food poisoning was always a possibility.
Megan finally rose to her feet and grabbed her robe off of the chair, slipping it on and tying the sash around her waist as she exited her bedroom and headed to the kitchen. She glanced towards Lacey's room but saw no light coming from under her door. When she got to the kitchen she flicked on the coffee pot and grabbed a mug from the cabinet. As her morning coffee began to brew Megan closed her eyes and gently rubbed her temples in a futile attempt to ease the headache that was accompanying her upset stomach.
Once the coffee maker had finished its job, Megan poured the steaming liquid into her mug, adding the cream she retrieved from the refrigerator. As she lifted the mug to take a sip, her nausea spiked, causing her to rapidly set the mug back down and take a few deep breaths. Realizing that she wasn't going to win the fight she hurriedly made her way back to her bedroom and into the bathroom. Once there she knelt before the toilet, throwing the seat up and hastily grabbing her hair with one hand. Her body heaved several times, bringing up what little remained of the previous night's meal.
It didn't take long before her stomach had emptied itself and Megan sat back on her heels, taking deep breaths once again. After sitting for a few more minutes, she was fairly certain that she was done. Flushing the toilet, she made her way to the sink, rinsing her mouth with some cool water from the tap. She looked at her pale face in the mirror and ran her hand through her hair.
Megan made her way back out to the living room and found Lacey sitting on the couch wrapped in a blanket, looking down at the phone in her hands. "Hey Lace."
Lacey looked up and smiled. "Morning, mom." Her smile faltered. "Are you ok?"
Megan nodded. "I'm just feeling a little off this morning." Lacey didn't look convinced. "Seriously, Lace, it's probably just something I ate. I'll live." By now she was standing next to her daughter and reached out to stroke her hair. "Do you want some breakfast?"
Lacey nodded. "Yeah, but I can make something for us both. What do you want to eat?"
Megan grimaced at the offer. "Uh...I think I'll just try a piece of toast." She followed her daughter into the kitchen, grabbing her abandoned cup of coffee and pouring it out in the kitchen sink. She sat on one of the stools at the kitchen counter and watched as Lacey gathered ingredients to make herself breakfast. Megan couldn't help but smile, relishing the fact that she gets to spend more time with her daughter these days.
After filling two glasses with water and sitting them on the counter, Lacey sat down with her plate of eggs and toast while sliding a plate with a piece of toast in front of her mother. The pair both began to eat in comfortable silence.
"I can have dad pick me up early today if you don't feel well," Lacey offered.
Megan shook her head, "I want to spend at least part of the day with you," she confirmed before taking another small sip of her water. The food wasn't really making her feel any better, but it wasn't making her feel any worse either. "Maybe we could at least watch a movie before you go?"
Lacey nodded, "Sure. I'd like that." The pair finished their meal and then Lacey gathered up the two plates and placed them in the sink. "Can I pick out the movie?"
Megan nodded her head and Lacey left for the living room to scan the movie collection. Megan refilled her water glass half way and followed her daughter out, setting her glass on the coffee table and taking a seat on the sofa. After putting her movie of choice on, Lacey joined her mother on the couch, spreading the throw blanket out across both of their laps.
About halfway through the movie Megan's phone chimed an alert. Looking at the screen Megan saw a text from Peter.
What are you and Lacey up to today?
Megan smiled as she typed her reply. She had let her thoughts travel to the blonde man just before his text came in. It was scary how he did that sometimes.
Just watching a movie before she goes back to Todd's. I'm thinking of taking a nap after she goes. You two wore me out yesterday ;)
Megan decided there was no need to mention her discomfort to Peter, sure that it would pass by the following day.
Sounds like a great idea. Chores for me, then maybe I'll follow your lead on a nap. Pick you up in the morning?
Sure. See you then.
Megan smiled again. Lately, the more time she spent with Peter the more she craved being near him. Since the two of them had expanded their roles as 'partners', Megan had found herself happier and more at ease than she had in a long time. She once again felt like someone had her back.
Looking up from her phone, Megan saw her daughter grinning at her. "Tell Peter I say hi," she laughed.
"How did you know?"
"Mom, seriously? You only smile like that when it has to do with Peter," Lacey laughed.
Megan could feel herself blush as she typed her message.
Lacey says to tell you hi.
Tell her hi back, and I'll see her next week.
"Peter says hi back and he'll see you next week." Lacey smiled and leaned into her mom's side, turning her attention once again to the movie on the screen.
Several times throughout the next couple of hours Megan could feel the nausea ebb and flow, but never had to make another hasty trip to the bathroom. She took this as a reassuring sign that her ailment would be short-lived. After the movie finished Lacey called her dad to come pick her up since Megan still wasn't feeling well and went to her room to pack her things.
After a hug and a promise to talk in the next couple of days, Lacey was gone and Megan sighed. She settled back on the couch and changed the channel to a documentary about sea animals and wrapped the blanket around her shoulders. She must have been more tired than she thought because the next thing she knew she awoke and it was after noon.
Some soup and crackers went down well for lunch, and Megan spent the rest of her day catching up on some paperwork from their latest cases. She went to bed early, still feeling tired, and reasoned that maybe she just needed to sleep off whatever was ailing her. Tomorrow was another day.
I know that I'm late to the Body of Proof fandom, but I'm slightly obsessed. I haven't written fanfiction in several years, but this idea won't leave my head. I'm posting mostly for my own guilty pleasure, but if you do read this I'd love to hear your opinion.
