Chapter 5
Emilia's tears fell from her face. Soft blue tears slid from her pale cheeks as Beatrice clung to her. The little spirits own eyes clouded with her own very tears. The council of wise men stared aimlessly at them, mouth gaped, and jaws dropped.
The royal candidates as well. Crusch was hunched in the back of her chair, her gaze fixated on the half elf. Her face rendered of any known emotion. Felt clung to her knight, the young blond candidate's arms wrapped around the sword saint as he reflexively ran his hands through her hair.
Wilhelm himself, he had to take a knee as the world around him started to spin. The old man feeling the true weight of loss…the true weight of losing someone who you would call son.
Anastasia couldn't believe what touched her ears. "You got to be kidding me, this is just one big joke…" She murmured underneath her breath. Her purple eyes fixated on the nest of papers sprawled in front of her.
Julius and the other knights of the kingdom that were tasked to keep the peace in the council room were as well astonished. Julius himself, his muscles tensing as the hollowness of his eyes simply enlarged. The young man a second later falling to his knees as he felt his breath only get heavier.
Felix gripped his stomach. His breathing tensed and hollow as he fell onto both knees. Sweat began to pour down his brow as Emilia concluded what her and her camp did to Subaru. "No one…no person deserves to go through that." He softly spoke, small blue tears falling from his eyes.
Roswell himself wasn't there. After giving his testimony of the events that followed, he retired to his room, the wizard for the first time having extremely haunted eyes. The type of eyes of a man that had lived a million lives and to only be awarded with the pit of despair and the chains of regret.
Priscilla, the goddess herself merely grunting as her agitated voice began to fill the room. She shot up from her chair with such quick precision that it fell to the floor. "Are you honestly kidding me!" She screamed at the council of wise men and the other members in the room, there gazes going towards the fiery candidate. "You expect mine self to believe this, to believe this story that you wove together, half devil!" She screamed even louder, the words echoing through the room.
Emilia's bloodshot purple eyes staring at the candidate. Her teeth unnaturally snarled as she parted her lips. "You think I'm lying about this; you think I would dare hurt Subaru like this!"
"Yes, I do!" Priscilla's finger pointed straight at Emilia. Both candidates staring at one another. "Do you honestly expect me to believe this. You expect me to believe that you and your other members of your camp just randomly had the URGE to just degrade and maim the boy in the way you did!"
Yeah, it was crazy. Crusch, Anastasia, Felt and Rein's eyes both fixated on Emilia. They had seen the way Subaru looked at Emilia, they could remember all that Subaru did for Emilia. This was murder!
Subaru embarrassed himself for the girl, he saved her countless times and was THE ONLY REASON that she was even able to stand on her own two feet to compete for the throne. He already took out two out of the three great mabeast, he had slaughtered the archbishops of sin and created battle plans to deal with them. He saved Pristellia, conquered the watchtower and even dealt with these issues in Volachia.
"Yeah, this is strange…" Anastasia's words strained out towards the half elf. Her fingers resting once again on the desk as she herself pointed at the girl. "You say that you had an urge to say all those horrible things to Subaru, that you had the urge to beat him to the brink of death. Still, there is no such magic to do that. Especially something strong enough to affect such a powerful great spirit!"
There were murmurs of agreement spreading through the crowd. There once vacant eyes were now staring daggers at the half elf and her spirit. Even Reinhard himself, the sword saint. His eyes were narrowed at the half elf as he gripped the pommel of the dragon sword. Julius could feel the tinge of his spirits at his side, murmuring how they would aid him if the battle broke out. Wilhelm's own gaze was fixated on the candidate, his breathing harsher and harder. The boy that gave him the ability to avenge his wife, to be murdered…to die in such a way, to get betrayed by those he loved. The old man's strength was crushing the grip of the sword as after each breath his fury only heightened.
The other knights were thrown in the pit of rage and anger as well. Subaru, the boy was not of noble blood, but they would be fools to discount the boys accomplishments…maybe it was due to him being dead now, that they were finally able to come to terms with Natsuki Subaru, the boy that embarrassed himself in front of them and challenged the greatest of all knights.
Only for that same boy…to be later considered to be the greatest of all heroes. His ambition and hope paved the way for their country, his deeds, the things of heroes and the name of Natsuki would be paved in the winding corridors of history. That was why, some tears fell from their eyes and their gazes were fixated solely ahead on the half elf candidate.
Swords were drawn, Emilia hearing the way the iron blades were pulled from there scabbards as she turned around as the knights and guardsman met to face her. Julius himself was thrown into the hysteria of all things, his legs pushing himself up as he was about to draw his own very blade. His mouth unlatched as the vibrant face of Natsuki Subaru, the great hero of this world pulsated in his head.
His smiling face…the face of the boy to become a legend. To only be murdered by the people he loved. "Emilia, half elf candidate for the throne. I, Julius the greatest of all knight's try you for the murder of Natsuki Subaru, the half elf's knight!"
Julius was operating on pure fury. Ripping his sword free from the scabbard with such intensity that the blade created sparks, his spirits surrounding him as he narrowed his eyes, his purple eyes filling with tears as the other knights raised their own weapons.
"FOR NATUSKI SUBARU…KNIGHT OF LAGUNICA!"
There screams etched through the air as Emilia turned around. Her tears drying to her cheeks as she went to face Julius, Beatrice's hands tucked into her own pale fingers. Emilia was about to formulate her signature fire magic to stop this, though Julius's spirits detected it first…
"What, you want to fight back…you already murdered my friend. Haven't you taken enough lives!" Julius screamed, his voice before was usually so calm and reassuring at times. Rarely even tensed as Emilia watched Julius cry for the first time. "You've already murdered Subaru, do you really think…villain, that you'll get away that easily!"
Julius took a step forward. The crowd hysteria being thrown into a loop…even the candidates themselves even feeling the tension circulating around the air. The horrific tension soaring like a wave, threatening to take them all under.
Wilhelm, walked between them. The old man held his sword drawn as the young knight stopped in his tracks. "Old man!" Priscilla shouted; her voice unparalleled. "She murdered him…the half witch with her half-wit story tried to spin a tail to try to excuse her and her camp. You heard her words, do I need to remind you all, thou you already heard them from her very lips."
Priscilla, her fan slammed into the table. She was angry which was uncommon for her, maybe it was due to the stupidity of the half witch's story or how reluctant they were for taking her down. "She mentioned before how she "enjoyed" beating him to a pulp, how she enjoyed saying those heinous and vile things to the boy. She only regretted it after because the "Urge" was gone. Are you fools insane!"
Felt slammed her fist into the table. Her eyes fixated on Rein; her face snarled as she spoke towards her knight. "Rein, don't let her out…help Julius and do what you must!"
Emilia heard those words. Turning towards the blond-haired candidate. "Felt…please!" She begged the young girl, only for Felt's teeth to unclamp. Her gaze fixated straight at Emilia, she lurched from her seat.
"Are you kidding me! You're a…you're a monster! You killed big bro, you made him SUFFER a death that no one would ever want, and you want me to believe you!" She slammed her fist once again into the table. "If you and your camp had this urge to murder Subaru, then how do we know that you won't just do it again!"
"Damn demihumans…should've known this would happen. A whole camp nearly compromised of demi's. Ms. Hoshin I would respectfully advise for you to get rid of your fang of iron. Who knows when they'll turn on you as well?" Bordeaux's voice arose.
Anastasia's face went sour. She turned over towards the council and mostly towards Bordeaux himself. "Don't lump myself and my camp with this messed up lot…if Natsuki was in my camp nothing like this would have happened."
More screams and cries erupted from the council chambers. Until…
Mikiltov's pounding voice arose through the chambers. The voices silencing as he shot up from his chair, sweat erupting over his brow as he stared at everyone. His furious eyes soaking everyone in as he pointed towards the large doors and curtains. "I want everyone to seal the door shut and the curtains as well. I don't want anyone getting out or leaving!"
The guards followed his orders. The doors were sealed shut, not only locked but had a massive wooden log plopped in front of it to make sure it would stay sealed shut. The curtains were drawn rendering the room to be barely illuminated and torches had to be spread out, the knights…for now were repositioned back to their area's though Emilia could feel their harsh stares searing in the back of her hair. Beatrice's own fingers tightened along Emilia's own."
"Let me say this…" Mikiltov's eyes scanned the room once again. His voice booming as the atmosphere of the whole room changed. His hand slashed through the room like a sword. "Nothing…I mean absolutely nothing must leave this room. If anything, absolutely anything leaves here…our kingdom can be sent on the brink of extinction."
There was not a single sound. Not a pin that was dropped as Mikiltov's gaze went to the duchess herself. "Ms Karestein." He spoke. The sudden call of her name causing Crusch to wake up. She had zoned out and was too locked in her head. However, they didn't have time for that. "Was Emilia telling the truth. Was she and her camp hit with an urge to hurt Natsuki Subaru or was it of their own free will?"
Crusch's mouth opened, though she glanced over at Emilia. At the girl that stole Natsuki Subaru's heart and now most likely his life. Crusch nodded her head. The crowd erupted into a horrific seizure of insults and screams.
"Bullshit!"
"That's a fucking lie…that half elf whore is lying. The witch's influence must have affected the duchess!" One of the knights spoke, the others around him agreeing. The hysteria around the room now once again being reignited. "We should just kill this bitch!" Another screamed
"SILENCE!" Milkitov spoke. Rendering the knights and cutting the flames of hysteria down before they could spark once again.
Felt spoke up, taking a step toward the duchess herself. "Maybe, he is right. What would happen if Emilia was using magic to make us see things?"
"…or worse, she actually believes the lies she is saying. The girl could very well be mad and murdered Subaru by accident and is just chalking it up to this impulse!" Anastasia spoke up, grunting in disgust as she avoided Emilia's gaze. Emilia was still rendered silent as she took in the blunt of her words.
She believed that she deserved it. Subaru's face…his scary orange eyes lightened up her core. However, they were conflicted. She could remember the way her fist crushed into him, his cries for mercy as he begged her to stop, to just listen to him.
Her fingers went to her knuckles. Scratching and peeling at the skin as they shimmered…the crimson of her Subaru's blood still fresh on her mind. "We'll talk more about it later. Still, there are far greater concerns. The news of Natsuki Subaru's death…"
"Betty's Subaru is not dead in fact; I've talked to him a day prior!" Beatrice's voice erupted. Milkitov stared at the girl. "Betty and Subaru had a connection…due to me stripping him of the contract so quickly it had lasting effects."
"Wow, because that makes it so much better." Felix sarcastically spoke. Now calmed down enough to sit back down in his chair. "Who is your new contractor, spirit."
Emilia spoke up. "Me…me and Beatrice made a contract. It was because we wanted to try and find Subaru and she needed access to Mana."
Priscilla chuckled. "Is something funny…" Emilia's purple eyes narrowed at the princess. Priscilla not giving any hint of fear as her elbow rested on the table. "Oh nothing, I just think it's ironic that you murdered the boy and stole one of his companions for yourself. You truly are disgusting."
"Enough!" Miliktov ordered once again. "Great spirit, you mentioned that Subaru is alive and that you have spoken to him. If this is true, where is he?"
"Betty doesn't know, I suppose that he must of have been located somewhere close to the Margrave estate for us to contact each other." Beatrice answered, Milkitov breathed a sigh of relief as the old man slumped back into his chair.
He nodded his head with the spirts statement. If this is true that means that there is a good chance that Natsuki is still in the country. "I was worried about him leaving and going back to Volachia. They worship the young man's strength, and he would be accepted there." Milkitov confessed.
Milkitov held his fingers curled together as he rested them on his lap. "Now, I need everyone to listen. It is imperative that you never mention the fact that Natsuki Subaru is most likely dead."
Julius lost control. "What do you mean…he's dead!" Julius growl spread through he room. Tears still beckoning his eyes, regret over failing his friend. "He was a knight, and he needs a knight funeral. We shall as well as go to the margrave domain and search the forest and recover what is left of Natsuki's body. He was a great man that needs a proper burial, not out there with the mabeast and the cold."
He didn't want to think about it. At the end of Emilia's story she mentioned how they searched everywhere for Subaru and couldn't find him anywhere. The estate, especially the woods was prone to Mabeat infestations. He didn't want to think about it, what those damn animals would have done to Subaru.
"Julius, I understand your anger and I would agree with you but the kingdom right now with the supposed death of Subaru is in a far difficult place."
Crucsh got up from her chair. Turning to the council "How difficult?"
"On the brink of extinction and total annihilation." Milkitov spoke with zero hesitation, with zero soft words but rather with the unbridled truth.
Silence etched through the room as Miliktov spoke those words. "Total annihilation…" Wilhelm repeated under his breath as Milkitov opened his mouth once again to speak.
"Natsuki Subaru, to the people of Lagunica was a mixed bag. He was a man of many great and amazing feats. He is someone that we all know will be remembered in history and will forever be marked as a hero. The only reason why he was not marked as such and was a very mixed bag was his association with the half elf candidate. Instead of his prior title of half elf knight he would be called the half devil's knight as a sign of disrespect towards the candidate." He affirmed.
Emilia heard those words…her throat felt stiff. Her heart racing and was willing to beat out of her chest. 'I…held him back?' Emilia thought, her hand went to her chest as she felt the heavy beats of her heart against her ribcage. Her Subaru, she held him back.
The way Milkitov spoke of him, if he didn't find her…if he didn't save her, then he would have been alive. He would of have been thriving and enjoying life. The other camps, they would have been further suited to protect Subaru and care for him. She was pathetic, a selfish monster that hurt the only person that had ever truly loved her.
"Yet, in this throne room your hearts changed towards the boy, after hearing this story. The hearts of the people…no the world will change. Natsuki Subaru was a hero. A hero that changed the world and would have continued changing it if he had lived. However, his death wasn't peaceful, he did not fall in battle doing his duty. For all we know he was tortured by his camp and murdered by the woman he loved." Milkitov said. The unbridled and raw truth of what most likely happened to Subaru.
"Where he would have died a martyr of heroism. He was slaughtered and put down like a rabid dog. This murder or whatever you seek to call it must not leave this room, not until we have our story and facts straight. Natsuki Subaru was the only thing keeping the Witch Cult at bay. If they found out he was murdered they would rejoice, they've been quiet right now, but I assure you they will attack us with their full ferocity and maybe even the new archbishops will arise during this confusing time."
"New archbishops?" Julius parted his mouth to speak. The most valuable knight uttering the same words.
Milkitov gazed at Julius, parting his lips to speak. "Subaru slew the archbishops of sloth, gluttony and greed. Nevertheless, we are not sure about where the other four are and how the title of archbishop is transferred. I guarantee you that the witch cult will have a surge in numbers and strength due to our only shield and their greatest fear now gone. That is as well excluding the citizens and Volachia. The citizens of Lagunica will be horrified of the details surrounding this. Demi human relations have only gotten strainer through the years and finding out a majority demi human camp murdered Subaru in such a way will definitely cause riots. The lands of the Margrave will definitely be under fire."
Felix heard those words, snarling in Emilia's direction as he turned away from her. Anastasia as well, she was one of the most pro demi human supporters out there. Now, due to what Emilia has done this could have lasting effects for years to come. "Volachia, now this is also another pressing issue. Subaru, what he did there sealed the contract and put us at peace with them."
"Though, I don't understand…you mentioned we were at peace with them." Felt reiterated. "I don't understand the issue."
"No, they are at peace with Subaru. They respect Subaru and this death for them, I guarantee will be like one of a martyrs. They respected his strength and the emperor himself favored Subaru, there strength has only grown these years. I don't think they will be too happy to find out that Subaru was murdered by someone that could be considered Lagunica royalty. We'll be lucky if it doesn't blow up in a full-scale war. The emperor is ambitious. If he was looking for a reason to invade Lagunica that would 'Ent get his citizens riled up…we just gave him a massive reason."
Priscilla's fan unlatched as she began to carelessly wave it to her face. "So…war, riots, racial violence and od lagunica knows what else. You really like messing things up, half devil witch. Your URGE could very well doom our kingdom."
Emilia was shaking once again. She was hopeless, disgusting and everything Priscilla said was true. She was a selfish monster that had no reason to even gaze at Subaru's direction. She realized the truth that she was the one holding him back this whole time.
It broke her…
"Find those that we can trust. Those that can be divulged with such information so we can hopefully try and track down Subaru if he still lives. Likewise, I wish to get a couple of guards to surround the Margrave's lands and estate. The investigation to find Natsuki's corpse shall still be going on and we shall see if Emilia is telling the truth."
Three bangs. It ricocheted along the boarded door of the room. Another massive bang etched into the air like a bell to a wooden wall. The wooden pillar was thrown off as a guardsman made his way into the room, he ran towards the center. Kneeling as he took a bow. "Council…I must report to Anastasia Hoshin." Anastasia stared at the man. Her body nearly convulsing and collapsing to the floor as the words etched from his mouth. "The Hoshin estate is on fire, there are numerous casualties from the fang of iron."
While they spoke, there was a meeting somewhere else in the same capitol city. Though, there were two people perched on top of a brick building overshadowing the Hoshin structure. Now, it was their time to strike.
