A/N: She is not Bella, but she is her cousin twice removed, maybe even her eponym! The first Isabella Marie Swan. This was just a little Halloween revenge lol xx Alexis
The year was roughly 1949, the month well that was more significant. October, in fact, it was almost Halloween. A vampire family of five, three males and two females. Had moved into an old house in the forest on the outskirts of a small town called Forks, Washington. Moving in mid-August, ready for the new school year to begin. The house was dilapidated, small and outdated, like turn of the century outdated. But the leader's wife had plans, lots of plans. While she did that, he would become a junior Doctor at the newly founded, still being built Olympic Clinic* in September. One male member decided he would become a logger this time around and although his wife wasn't impressed, he went ahead anyway.
The other and final male would be going to the local school because he looked too young for anything else but to be a schoolboy and the younger female was to sign up as a Candy Striper at the hospital, not expected to gain a real job. These are the members of the Cullen coven or family as the Doctor likes to call them. One of his tasks was to meet with the local tribe, when they stumbled upon shapeshifters, while they were all hunting animals in the forest. A treaty was struck, agreements made and a hopeful peace began.

Those two had done this before, several times since she joined the coven or family in 1933. Always moving the family on before they made the connection. Finding a random target was easy; between the schools, he had to attend and the hospitals that father figure insisted she volunteer at. They often laughed when a poor deluded fool took her own life or lost their mind and were sent to the asylum, rather than face eternity alone. They thought nothing of doing it again, but this one would be different, a much bigger challenge, unbeknownst to them. The youngest had at first flattered her, walk her home from school, pretend to be the perfect gentleman.
But they were glamouring her, stealing her blood and trying to break her mind. He would finally profess to love her, not in front of witnesses, of course. His sister of sorts pretended to be her friend, but again not in front of witnesses, she acted as a chaperone and meanwhile set the seeds of doubt on the target's sanity, this time not only to the family but patients and staff at the hospital as well. Once a fortnight they went off for a weekend hunting trip. Where they could drink the blood and then glut themselves on animals to stop their eyes from turning red. They got away with it time and time again. Why? Because nobody thought they could or would stoop so low.
To harmfully play with the feelings and fragile sanity of a poor human girl! Their callous and entitled behaviour was nothing new but usually overlooked or ignored by the coven leaders or parents, as they called themselves. To the point where everyone was glad they went off hunting alone. But this time it was going to backfire on them and cause untold damage to their whole way of life and the lives of some of those around them. The young arrogant boy would find his life as the golden child would be irrevocably destroyed and the childish woman would lose the only man who ever loved her. Not that it was reciprocated, because she felt it was her due!
They assumed that the family could be pushed into leaving early when the news broke of the tragic death of one so young. Like every other time when they had torn down the human to the point, she would kill herself. But they forgot this was their mother figure's new favourite place so far, she wanted this to be a show home for the future. This was one of the few places the weather made it so easy to be involved in the community. So nobody was inclined to move just yet and they didn't want to insist in case the other's caught wind of their deceit. So began a nail-biting waiting game, waiting for their Doctor father to come home and say that a local girl had killed herself!
But the days passed and nothing happened, granted she, their target wasn't at school with him anymore and the rumours were rife. She was a prominent citizen and missed by many. Her two male cousins were concerned. The first sign things had not gone to plan was a fire in the forest near their home. Fire although dangerous to others was more deadly to them, they could burn to ash! When you're not human, it bodes well to be wary of those around you, but these two were arrogant. What did surprise them was her scent near the site of the fire! What did this mean, how could she be fit enough to do this? All the others had become hospitalised or in some cases institutionalised.
They couldn't go to her home to check, her father was the new Mayor since the town had finally reached that long-awaited status. The Mayor's brother was the Police Chief; the Mayor's sister was the School's first female Principal. The family was as high status as a small town could get. The Swans and the Dowling's were a close-knit family. But by far their biggest mistake was who the girl's mother had been. A mother who'd died in childbirth, giving her life for her precious daughter. She had been the sister of one of the elders from the local tribe, the shaman to be exact. A family who also had secrets, a family who were part of the brand new treaty their leader had been so proud of.
It would be totally and irrevocably destroyed if anyone found out what they'd done. Of course, they just felt this added a level of extra danger. This time they really screwed up, picking someone so important to make a target for their sick games. They, of course, were two not so pleasant psychos'. Two of the most irritating and infantile vampires on the face of the planet! Ones who did no research or planning and it would come back to bite them. He even shrugged his shoulders at his inability to read her mind; this too was seen as a challenge and not something to worry about. What it was was gross stupidity, but nobody said they were intelligent!
She'd known her body was never designed for this, her brain should never have been expected to cope with that. But it did and she now became wise to them, those two charlatans. She thanked God for her heritage, as this was what had saved her she was sure. She berated herself for falling for them pretending to befriend her. She had fallen for it at first, been flattered even until she realised they weren't even human. It didn't take long before she knew what they were; she was part of the tribe after all. But the attempted glamour, continual blood loss and slight amounts of venom in her system had disoriented her at first before it finally triggered a dormant part of her mind.
The very thing that stopped the youngest from seeing inside her head or truly glamouring her. Once away from him and his sister she shook it off every time. Her shield broke free finally, but so too did her anger! With that anger, came fire! She knew her mind was maybe a little damaged by this but didn't care. But not so much that her busy father would notice, so just telling him a boy at school was refusing to leave her alone, making her feel uncomfortable and she'd stay with her uncle and aunt for a couple of weeks was enough. The busy Mayor was a seriously absent parent. Although the hatred she felt for those two vampires overrode everything, she wanted revenge.
So she turned to her uncle for help, he being a shaman understood something supernatural had released a power from within her. One that would normally never have been set free. Although she never mentioned names, her uncle wasn't a fool and he knew who she was talking about. While he helped harness her power she made plans. This is where she was while her tormentors sweated it out. The first incident wasn't so bad she just had been talking about what they had been doing to her and literally burst into flames. Luckily they were outside and her uncle could see the flames were not touching her at all. He decided to get her to direct the fire to one place, off of herself.
And that's how she set fire to the forest near their house, by directing it through anger. She had been walking, further than she realised then and saw them laughing and joking, looking as if they didn't have a care in the world! Joking about other girls who had not survived their games The fire exploded out of her fingers and she almost panicked, but that was when she found out she could recall it too. So as she flourished they started to get more scared. Especially when she returned to school looking healthier than she ever had before and totally ignored him and almost everyone else too. This was a small community, just growing taking root in Washington State. They knew nothing of the tribe's legends or anything else that went bump in the night. But she would be the first to make them all look closer at the shadows surrounding them at night.
No one knew of the power the tribe had or the old magic that still ran through the veins of their people. Her sudden change would send ripples of fear into the hearts of her tormentors. Teachers would swear later after she disappeared that they saw flickers of fire swirling in her eyes. Anyone who offended her back then said they felt sudden heat on their skin. People commented how her demeanour had changed suddenly after the new school year had started. Just after that strange boy came to school. This was something they hadn't wanted a connection between her and him. But that vampire couldn't speak up to blame her when his car burst into flames driving away from the school.
Not his sister when a room at the hospital she'd just left also caught fire. The Chief of Police was called both times and he of course, never connected his niece to any of those incidents, even though she was close by both times. None of the other coven members had any problems, so they chalked it up to bad luck, or horrible coincidences. Well, the parents did anyway. But the big one who became the logger didn't believe any of that and started to pay a lot more attention to his wife of fewer than fifteen years and his so-called brother. A brother he neither liked nor trusted! He gave up his job, without telling anyone or thinking about anything other than work around the mind reader.
Sticking to the woods around the school and hospital, gave him the chance to see and hear things that he was never meant to and he was not happy. She, his wife ranting about why was it that this pathetic human had survived their torment? How come she didn't die like all the others? Which sickened him! He was ready to take this all to their leader when he was stopped, stopped by the very girl they were talking about. One look in her eyes changed everything he ever knew or believed. He didn't need convincing to let her keep punishing them, hell he helped her as much as he safely could. She was his mate, his true and real mate and his wife was a liar!
He arranged divorce papers, making them look like she and not he instigated it. Forging her signature was easy and all he had to do was wait. His new mate knew they had to die, but not exactly how or when. But she had decided it was time to escalate their payback. Following them on her mate's back, she could start fires in their paths and remove them just as easily. But pretending to set her mate on fire threw them over the edge into confessing their sins. He arrived home to hear the horrors they had committed and denied their claims of him being engulfed in flames. Telling them it was their guilty consciences catching up to them. He then handed his wife the divorce papers, saying he'd signed them just as she demanded of him.
They were flabbergasted, they had sold themselves out, confessed to their wrongdoings and were asked to leave. They couldn't take it back; they hung themselves out to dry so they fled out into the night, never to be seen again. Well, never to be seen by their coven as they once were. But one person saw them flee; she stopped them and gave them a taste of cruelty and retribution they never expected to receive. Taking the vain spoilt bitch's beauty was easy; making them both look as ugly on the outside as they were within was also easy. Hair burns quickly without difficulty and vampire skin scars so badly before it incinerates. Keeping them encircled by flame stopped them from escaping.
They begged and they pleaded, but she was relentless and demanded the names of every girl they ever harmed. When she was eventually found by her mate, they had lost limbs for every girl who took her own life. He sneered down at the two dismembered and half-burnt bodies of his ex-wife and brother. He wasn't a cruel man normally but felt these two deserved this. The crimes they committed were sick, twisted and disgusting. Taking his mate in his arms and kissing her passionately, but with more love and devotion than he'd ever felt for his ex-wife. Yes, she was a little crazy due to the treatment of those two miscreants who she now encased in concrete laced with shifter hair, blood and strong shaman magic.
This was the price the shaman demanded for his silence, to keep the peace and uphold the treaty. With no arms or legs, they could not free themselves. Every year at Halloween she planned to slowly burn them alive or undead as the case may be until they were no more. Unsure how long that would take, but was willing to do it anyway. The female vampire's mind was already going, due to the fire taking her beauty and as that was all she had, her small shallow mind just started to fracture. He would suffer on for many years unable to talk or be understood; only hearing the ravings of his coven mates broken mind. But this was their punishment for all the girls they preyed on over the years, now they were the prey.
What is it they say, oh yes, know your enemy! They, of course, did not think a human could get the better of them. But this girl was no ordinary girl and would be no ordinary vampire either. His torture was twofold, hearing each year how happy everyone was without them, seeing her in his place as the gifted one in the coven. She was the new Golden Child, but she never used it against the others as he had, she never acted more superior or saw herself as better than them. The girl had taken a trip to Seattle that year, for Christmas shopping and disappeared never to be seen again. She of course was now becoming a vampire, just like her mate and though saddened to leave, knew it was necessary to keep the secret.
To protect not only her family but the tribe and her new coven. They had toyed with leaving, but with the psycho twins gone there was no reason for them to leave too. So the two moved to another home and waited for the parental figures to join them later, near the end of her newborn year. Her transition went smoothly and her first year was actually fairly easy. Well, apart from a couple of small fires, which he managed to get her to contain. He didn't care she was a little damaged, weren't they all in one way or another. He himself had changed her not needing the Doctor to step in. This made their bond tighter and more solid, they loved each other deeply.

The year is now 1958, nine years have passed and the coven was about to change once more. Two new members had arrived to join them. They were confused; this was not what the little seer had foreseen.
"This isn't right! I saw five of you, not four and you were with a blonde, not a brunette. There was a boy with copper coloured hair too! "The seer spluttered out confused, pointing at the big vampire,
He smiled down at his mate lovingly. Before explaining there were two others years ago but they ran away together just before he met his true mate! The empath felt a little sadness, shame and regret from the leader and his mate, but the overall vibe was one of love, happiness and contentment in the coven. The youngest one's emotions were very muted to him, but once she told him she was a shield he understood. The seer couldn't see her at all and she didn't like that much, but would learn to live with it eventually.
"Anyway, welcome to the family. Do you like to celebrate the holidays? Not all of our kind does, but I love them, especially Halloween!" the young vampire woman said.
She was setting out the family's two life-sized statues in the garden down amongst the trees. They'd had since they met her in Forks Washington; well she brought them with her actually. They seemed to get more grotesque and deformed every year. The leader's wife hated them as they made her feel uneasy. The young woman said they were supposed to be demons or fallen angels and she insisted they come out every year for the holiday. Anyone that saw them said the haunted eyes seem alive and followed you when you walked by. But she laughed saying imagine vampires being afraid of statues!
"Yes, I think this will be their last year, they seem to be crumbling before my eyes! Well, we can make new ones, maybe less realistic, more family-friendly" she said smiling at the group on the porch,
They all nodded in agreement, finding the statues to be too lifelike, too weird looking even for them. Then she lit them up from within, giving the statues an eerie glowing effect and made sure her shield was firmly covering them. She always said it was to stop the fire from spreading out of control, but in reality, it was to stop anyone from hearing, sensing or feeling anything from the so-called inanimate statues. Yes, this was to be their last year, having an empath in the family now would be too risky. So she leant in and whispered goodbye to him, telling him to rot in hell with his sister!
*An eponym is a person, place, or thing after whom or which someone or something is, or is believed to be, named. The adjectives derived from eponym include eponymous and eponymic.
*The hospital was originally named "Olympic Clinic" and charged an inpatient fee of $10.50 per day. Initially, Dr. Edwin F. Leibold from Minnesota provided nearly all the medical care Dr. Leibold practiced in Forks from 1947 to his retirement in 1986. He was known as a real "country doc" and was the only physician in Forks for many years. He ushered more than 800 babies into the world, tended to their health needs from "cradle to grave", and climbed over logs and fought his way through brush to treat injured loggers. He and his wife also donated property to the hospital site.
