From when he was a boy Edward, along with Ben and Blackbeard shared a dream of a nation where all were free to do as they pleased. When he turned 16 he left his home to form his crew. The crew he traveled with got caught in a storm and he was the only survivor. He was washed up on an uninhabited island where he found the robes and weapons used by an ancient brotherhood of assassins. He found manuscripts detailing the assassins' fight for freedom. He ran into Stede Bonnet, the son of a sugar plantation owner who had the misfortune of running into pirates after his sugar. After saving Bonnet and learning that they both were headed to the same island and Bonnet was without a helmsman, Edward took aboard The Benjamin. Shortly after landing ashore, Edward was taken into marine custody for the murder of a celestial dragon who was about to kill an innocent man. He, along with Adewale and many other prisoners broke free and stole a marine ship and escaped the marines in a ferocious storm. He named his crew the Assassin Pirates as tribute to the mysterious brotherhood. He met with Edward Thatch and Benjamin Hornigold in the grand line and would join them in their quest to take Nassau as a homebase for their pirate republic. He also met Mary Read, a mysterious samurai who knows an awful lot about the assassin brotherhood, and developed feelings for her. He amassed a bounty of 4 billion belli, and his crew's total bounty was 5.5 billion belli.
Adewale

Taken as a slave from a young age, Adewale worked on many ships. He was eventually set free by a pirate crew on condition he worked for them. When he was arrested by the marines, his crew left him behind. He met Edward Kenway 2 weeks later, and they made their escape. Rescuing all the other prisoners, they stole a marine ship and escaped into a ferocious storm. While Kenway claimed the ship for himself and took the role of captain, Adewale fell nicely into the role of quartermaster. Enticed by Kenway's talk of Nassau and the PRN (Pirate Republic of Nassau), Adewale remained loyal to Kenway and the Assassin Pirates till the very end. He amassed a bounty of 1 billion belli.
Edward Thatch
AKA Blackbeard

Thatch was born and raised in the Goa Kingdom in Grey Terminal. He witnessed an event quite similar to the one Luffy, Ace and Sabo would years later. In preparation for a celestial dragon visiting, the king ordered the people living in Grey Terminal to be killed. Thatch survived by hiding in the trash. 3 days later, he found Sandai Kitetsu hidden in a pile of broken weapons. Unaware of its curse, he took it and used it to slaughter everyone responsible for the Grey Terminal murders. He then took to sea and formed his crew, and along with his old friend Benjamin Hornigold, he set out to form a republic governed by pirates where all were free to live how they liked (aside from keeping others from doing the same). His bounty was 4 billion belli and his crew's total was 5 billion belli. He was also the inspiration for Marshall D Teach
Benjamin Hornigold

While more of a talker than a fighter, Ben's contribution to the pirate republic was invaluable. Ben would often butt heads with Thatch, preferring a more peaceful approach to their problems. While Thatch and Kenway would choose to force the marines and world government into submission, Ben was responsible for the majority of crews that swore their allegiance to the PRN . He amassed a bounty of 1 billion belli and his crew's total was 1.2 billion belli.
Mary Read

Mary lived a relatively peaceful life on Fishman Island, until the day Queen Otohime was murdered. While most believed her death to be at the hands of a human, Mary knew the truth. She had witnessed Hody fire the bullet that killed their beloved queen, and when Hody found out he tried to kill her as well. Mary fled to the surface, but soon learned that she was in just as much danger as long as people knew she was a human. While hiding in the Wano Kingdom she chose to disguise herself as a samurai. She formed a crew under the name of The Sea Blade Pirates, in hopes to one day return to Fishman Island and reveal the truth of Otohime's death. While travelling she gained proficiency with her sword and earned the attention of the remaining members of the Assassin Brotherhood. She and her crew took up the mantle as assassins and would aid Blackbeard and Benjamin in the forming of the PRN. Soon after she met Edward Kenway, who was the only person outside of her crew to learn her secret identity as a mermaid. She would develop feelings for Edward Kenway. She amassed a bounty of 2 billion belli and her crew's total bounty was 2.5 billion belli.
Stede Bonnet

As the son of a sugar plantation owner Stede should have lived an easy life, but he loathed the fact that his family used slave labor to grow their sugar. Stede planned to take over the plantation when his father retired, but while sailing out to sell the sugar, he got word that he was written out of the family will. After meeting Edward Kenway, he was inspired to turn to the pirate life. He met Blackbeard, who took him under his wing. After he was taught the basics of sailing, and he ate the Syrup Syrup Fruit, he went on to form his own crew. After recruiting the Gentlemen Pirates, he sailed the grand line as an ally to the PRN and freed slaves from kidnappers, nobles and celestial dragons. He hopes to return to his home and take the family sugar plantation and free the slaves held there. He amassed a bounty of 900 million belli and his crew's total bounty was 1.5 billion belli.
Charles Vane

Devil Fruit: Sasquatch Sasquatch Fruit
Taken by the world government as a child, Charles was trained to be a CP9 agent. After many successful missions he was given the Sasquatch Sasquatch Fruit a Mythical Zoan type Devil Fruit. After a mission gone wrong, Charles was left for dead in a buster call, reminded by the Admiral with him that he was merely an expendable tool for the world government. Surviving the buster call, an enraged Charles went on to form the Bigfoot Pirates with no goal other than ensuring nobody suffered the same fate he did. They allied themselves to the PRN, they were notorious for their attacks on the world government. He amassed a bounty of 2 billion belli and his crew's total bounty was 3 billion belli.
Jack Rackham
Design: same as in game
A man looking for nothing than a good time, "Calico" Jack Rackham formed the Laughing Pirates and they sailed the Grand Line doing what they wanted. He joined the PRN assuming things with them would be quite entertaining. He amassed a bounty of 1.5 billion belli and his crew's total bounty was 2 billion belli.

5: The idea of giving Sandai Kitetsu to Blackbeard was that it would lead to his demise.
6: I gave Bonnet the Syrup Syrup Fruit because he's arguably the weakest pirate in AC4 and I thought it was a fitting Devil Fruit for a sugar plantation owner.
7: The reason behind Charles Vane was that I thought a sasquatch would be pretty cool as a Mythical Zoan and I thought it would be even cooler if a giant ate it.
