AN: Hello, everyone! We've finally made it! It's the day of the entrance exams and Shinsou gets the spotlight. We'll get to see just how the bracelet helps him get into the entrance exam. I actually had a lot of fun brainstorming ideas for what the item Midoriya gave Shinsou would be and how it would help him in the exam. I hope you like it as much as I do!
The month leading up to the entrance exam had been driving Shinsou crazy. He couldn't stop thinking about that boy from the shop. Did he actually grant his wish? The teen wearily glanced around at the other examinees on the bus they were taking to their sector of the physical exam. The other students were silent, preparing themselves for the test that would make or break their dreams. Shinsou had been amazed at the vast number of students that had shown up to the exam. It was crazy. Speaking of crazy, he kept getting stopped by other examinees, asking about his bracelet. The ones that stopped him were friendly, and Shinsou felt his resolve to keep to himself once he was in UA breaking. He hoped he'd see some of them again when he was in the hero course. The teen sighed, tiredly rubbing his eyes. For some reason, he was actually starting to believe in the kid's quirk. Either it was a weird coincidence that so many strangers were interested in his stupid bracelet, or it was a sign that maybe that shopkeeper really was something else. Shinsou felt the bus stop and opened his tired eyes to stare at the huge gate that signified the testing area. He stepped off the bus with the others and started looking around. Many of the students were piling by the gate's entrance, and the purple-haired teen decided that was probably where he should be as well.
Shinsou sighed as he found a spot by the gate entrance and began anxiously fiddling with the colorful twine bracelet on his wrist. He'd kept it in his room, for the most part, so no bullies would rip it up, but he spotted the bracelet sitting on his desk as he was heading out. The teen had almost left without it, but the intense feeling of regret made him grab it and squeeze his wrist through it. "I must be crazy for believing him." Even if it did have some kind of magic or luck, how was it going to get the judges' attention? How would it guarantee him a spot in the hero course? The insomniac snorted. "Maybe the power of friendship is going to help me."
"ALRIGHT, EXAMINEES!" Shinsou perked up as Present Mic's voice rang over the speakers. All of the other students around him perked up as well. "THE TEST IS ABOUT TO BEGIN. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE GATHERED AT YOUR CORRECT STATIONS." Everyone was already waiting, and the students packed in even more, desperate to be close to the starting line. He grunted in annoyance as some brat with a striped red and white pompadour accidentally elbowed him. Shinsou was ready to get this over with.
"Hey, you! Bracelet Guy!" Shinsou blinked in surprise as a girl with pink hair and skin shoved her way through the crowd. She stopped right in front of him, holding her fist out. "It's nice to see a familiar face. Let's both do our best, alright?"
Shinsou's eyes widened in surprise. "Yeah. Good luck to you." He bumped his fist to hers, then they both turned to face the gate. Seconds later, it opened up, and the students filed into the city. With more space, everyone spread out a little, and Shinsou silently noted that the pink girl had gone off to the other side. He took a deep breath. This was it. This was his chance to show the world that he was a hero. He was going to get into the hero course.
"OKAY, START!"
Everyone jumped in alarm.
"WHAT'S WRONG? THERE ARE NO COUNTDOWNS IN A REAL FIGHT!"
That was all the encouragement he needed. Shinsou dashed down the pavement, looking for robots to take down. He saw a 1-pointer and tackled it. "Ow!" Okay, that hurt a lot more than he thought it would. Shinsou knew he wouldn't be able to keep it up. But what else could he do? He looked around and saw the other examinees taking out the robots quickly. One guy had engines in his legs, and he was taking out multiple robots like nothing. "This is so unfair! Of course, UA's entrance exam is biased towards those with flashy quirks." Shinsou gritted his teeth and looked at the bracelet in anger. As he stared down at his wrist, movement caught his attention, and Shinsou noted in surprise that a metal pipe had rolled by him. "Must've been from one of the robots." He grinned and picked it up. It wasn't too long, but it was sturdy and relatively lightweight. "Huh. What a coincidence." The teen threw himself back into the fray, slamming his pole into any robots that remained. The area cleared out pretty quick, and Shinsou quickly looked around for more.
He picked a random direction, stopping when he heard a yelp of pain. 'What now?' The purple-haired boy turned to an alley, seeing a girl trip while being chased by a robot. He almost turned to let her deal with it when he noticed that she was one of the students who had complimented his bracelet. Ugh, she was nice, so he couldn't leave her to deal with the robot. Instead, with a quick swipe of his pole, he knocked the robot into the side of the wall. It sparked twice before dying out. Content that they wouldn't be attacked, Shinsou knelt beside her and held his hand out. "Come on, we still got a test to beat."
The girl with blond hair pulled up in a ponytail smiled, placing her hand in his. "Thank you!" The girl smiled at him before she took off running again.
Shinsou took off as well. "That burned some of my time, but I can still do well." The test continued, with the teen stopping on occasion to help someone up. After doing it for the first girl, he found himself more willing to help the other examinees when they got caught on something or needed help getting out of danger. And every time made him more worried about his score. He'd only gotten 23 points. There was no way that was enough. With a growl, Shinsou ran towards the center of the arena. "Give me some more robots, please! I'm so close to getting in!"
"3 MINUTES LEFT!"
Before Shinsou could run off to another area, a large rumbling filled the arena. A gigantic robot appeared from the ground, towering over everyone. "Fuck! That's the Zero-pointer? I am not dealing with that."
"Help! Please!"
Shinsou froze. He turned around, seeing a girl with light-brown bobbed hair on the ground with her foot caught under some rubble. She was directly in the path of the giant robot. Shinsou only had his pole, but he steeled his resolve as he saw all of the fleeing students. Where was… There! "Hey, Engines!" The teen turned around in surprise. "Get over here and help me out!"
The teen glared at him. "How ru-!" His eyes whitened as Shinsou's quirk took over.
"Help me lift the rubble off of the girl." Shinsou watched in satisfaction as the teen ran over, and the two of them grabbed the rock. It was still really heavy even with both of them. 'I really need to train more…' Shinsou knew that this wouldn't have been a problem if he was a little stronger. He saw the girl twist her arm around and barely managed to press her fingers to the rock. Shinsou jumped as the rock sailed out of the way from the force he and the other teen exerted on it. That didn't matter, though. The purple-haired teen quickly hefted the girl into a piggyback and dropped control over the blue-haired teen. The other guy blinked in confusion. "Run, man! Or you're gonna be crushed!" The other student wasted no time getting out of there, and Shinsou ran as fast as he could towards the entrance.
"AND TIME! THE TEST IS NOW OVER!"
Shinsou collapsed to the ground, face-first, with a pained groan. "Okay… I really need to lift weights."
The pink-cheeked girl laughed, quickly becoming a hurl as she turned and vomited off to the side. "I-I'm sorry." She panted, weakly grasping the ground as she tried to take deep breaths. "My quirk makes me nauseous if I use it for too long." She held out her shaky hand. "My name is Uraraka Ochako. Thank you for saving me!"
The boy raised his hand in a thumbs-up before letting it flop back to the ground. "Shinsou Hitoshi." He mumbled quietly.
Uraraka laughed again. She perked up when she saw a short woman in costume walking towards them. "Oh, hello!"
The older woman smiled as she looked her over. "Hello, dearie. I'm Recovery Girl. I'm just here to check you over. Are you feeling alright?"
The bubbly girl nodded. "Just a little bit of nausea, but I'm used to it. Other than that, my ankle hurts a bit."
Recovery Girl dug into her pocket and handed her some gummies. "Right, then! I'll heal you with my quirk, and after, I want you to eat these gummies, okay?" Uraraka nodded in acknowledgment. Recovery Girl gave her a kiss and then turned to the boy lying face-down on the ground. "And how about you, young man? Any pain?"
Shinsou pushed himself up slightly with his hands, so he could face her. "Just some soreness. I'm fine."
Recovery Girl looked him over. "Alright, then. Please eat these energizing gummies before you head home." Shinsou lifted his hand to grab the gummies, and the bracelet plopped to the ground. Recovery Girl placed the gummies in his hand before picking up the broken bracelet and handing that over as well. "You probably don't want to lose this, young man. Hopefully, you'll be able to get this fixed." The heroine turned and walked off to help other students.
Shinsou looked at the bracelet in surprise. When did it break? He could see the frayed edges of the threads at the place where it had been tied off.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Was that a special bracelet?" Uraraka inspected it without touching it. "It must've torn when you were lifting the rock."
The insomniac hummed in thought and pocketed it. "It's fine. This green-haired teen running a weird shop gave it to me. So I guess I shouldn't be surprised that it broke."
Uraraka paused. "Green-haired shopkeeper? Ah!" She brightened up, leaning forward slightly. "Did his name happen to be Midoriya?"
Shinsou's eyes widened in surprise. "Yeah, that's him. So you've met him?" His heart started pounding. After all this time… Here was a way to see if his wish would actually come true.
"Yup! He granted a couple of my wishes!" Uraraka stood up and brushed the dirt off her outfit. "I asked if he could help my parents' business get more customers, and lately, business has been really good!" Shinsou popped the gummies into his mouth before standing as well. He followed his new… friend? Were they friends now? He followed Uraraka as she led the way out of the testing arena. "He's also letting me stay with him if I get into UA since my home is a bit far." Well, then. Shinsou pulled the broken bracelet out of his pocket and stared at it. Midoriya really does grant wishes? He wasn't sure whether the teen actually had some kind of magic quirk, but Shinsou felt his anxiety wane. Maybe he didn't get enough points to get in, but, for a couple of people, Shinsou had been a hero. Wasn't that the point? Midoriya had seen that Shinsou could be a hero with his 'villainous' quirk, and the thick bracelet was proof of that. The threads were a little frayed, but he could probably tie it together still… He grabbed the ends and tried to tie them together. It was a little hard to do by himself. The new length of the bracelet meant he couldn't slip it on after tying it, but he still wanted to wear it. However, it was too short to tie one-handed. "Shinsou?"
He looked up, startled by his name. Uraraka was looking at him curiously. "I asked you if you wanted to come by the shop with me? I wanted to tell Midoriya about the test!" Her eyes trailed down to the bracelet hanging off his wrist. "Oh, I could tie that if you want!" Without prompting, Uraraka gently grabbed his wrist and straightened it out. Then, she grabbed the frayed ends and deftly tied them together. "My parents taught me this knot. If you tie something this way, it'll never come undone from pulling on the ends. You'll have to pull on it from the knot itself." Uraraka happily stepped back as she finished.
Shinsou stared at the friendship bracelet. It was a little dull from dirt, but the multi-colored band was still fairly bright. Dark pink, light pink, dark green, light green, yellow, purple, red, red and white entwined, burgundy, and orange made up his weaved friendship bracelet colors. The colors were odd choices, but they somehow worked perfectly in his odd little bracelet. Maybe it wasn't special to him before, but it was special now. "Yeah." Shinsou smiled and tucked his hands into his pockets. He followed after Uraraka as she led the way back to the buses. "Let's go see Midoriya."
