The following morning, Link tried to think of a plan. The moon was noticeably closer. Link estimated she only had maybe two more days before the entire region was crushed. Link knew she had to hurry.
Link decided to find out what she could do in her new body. It was certainly more limited than her normal body in a lot of ways, but keatons were supposed to be magical. What magic, if any, could she use? Could she find another keaton to help her find out?
Link decided to explore the town further to see if she could find a keaton. She found nothing really suspicious until she found tall grass suspiciously arranged in a circle. It felt almost too neat to have occured naturally and almost too random for any of the people here to have done it purposely. Perhaps this was a keaton in disguise?
To test her hypothesis, she attacked the grass. The tall grass began to move, which Link found suspicious, before disappearing underground. A second later, another keaton appeared.
"It's certainly unusual for another keaton to come around here." the keaton said as it examined Link, "Especially for a female as young as yourself. What brings you here?"
Unable to speak, Link let out a yelp.
"You are indeed unusual." the keaton told Link, "Can you even talk?"
Link shook her head.
"Most unusual." the keaton said as it examined Link further.
"Can you at least use magic?" the keaton asked, "It's dangerous to be running around out in the open like that."
Link shook her head.
"You should seek the Great Fairy." the keaton told Link, "She lives in a fairy fountain in this section of town. The Skull Kid's antics have left her feeling... incomplete. Perhaps you should try the laundry pool first."
Link nodded and left to look for the laundry pool. The keaton simple smiled as he vanished from view, disguising himself as a ring of tall grass. Moments later, Link found herself in a smaller section of the town containing a small artificial body of water. Floating above the water was an unusual looking fairy. Link got to the edge closest to the fairy and leaped. She managed to touch the fairy shortly before falling into the laundry pool. She climbed out and shook herself as dry as possible, but she had successfully attracted the fairy.
"Please, hear my plea!" the stray fairy told Link, "The masked Skull Kid has broken me apart and scattered my pieces! Please find a way to return me to the Great Fairy Fountain in North Clock Town."
With the stray fairy in tow, Link returned to North Clock Town. After searching the area, she finally found it in a raised area to the west. Running inside, she watched as the stray fairy floated to the other stray fairies inside. They combined to form a Great Fairy.
"Young one of the altered shape." she said as she floated feet away from Link, "Thank you for returning my broken and shattered body to normal. I am the Great Fairy of Magic. I thought the masked child was helping me and I grew careless. All I can offer you is this: I shall grant you Magic Power as a sign of my gratitude. Please Accept it!"
The Great Fairy watched as Link was engulfed in magic.
"The man in the observatory may know of the Skull Kid's whareabouts..." the Great Fairy explained, "But be careful! You must not underestimate that child's powers, kind young one. If ever you are returned to your former shape, come see me. I shall give you more help."
After the Great Fairy disappeared into the fountain, Link left. She now had magic. She just had to figure out how to use it. Link could ask the keaton, but decided to try experimenting first.
At first, she tried basic attacks. Biting and lunging showed no signs of magic. Niether did spinning to mimic her old spin attack. Out of ideas, she revisited the keaton.
"So, you've visited the Great Fairy?" the keaton asked. Link nodded.
"Do you know how to use magic yet?" he asked. Link shook her head.
"I'm not surprised." he told Link, "The Great Fairies tend to be less concerned with us 'lesser' creatures. At least, not concerned enough to care how we do magic. Now, pay attention."
Link listened as the keaton began his lesson.
"The key is visualization." he explained, "Every keaton learns how to do magic on their own, using our instinct for magic, but we all have to visualize what we are doing first. If you can't visualize it, you can't figure out how to do it. Once you've visualized it and your body has memorized it, you don't even have to worry about thinking about it or forgetting it. Now, for your first spell, visualize yourself turning into a circle of grass."
Link took a few steps back, and tried to visualize herself turning into grass. It took a lot of concentration, but she became grass. Excited, she tried to return to her old form, but immediately failed."
"A curse seems to be preventing you from using that form." the keaton told her, "Don't worry. There may be some way of healing you from that curse. Bye for now. It's unwise for keatons to risk drawing too much attention."
After the keaton turned back into the grass, Link ran off. The Great Fairy mentioned something about an observatory. Link decided to find it. Perhaps she'd find or learn something of use there.
