Chapter 2 - A Refugee World!

Most days she often wonders what other worlds were like out there and some she found herself completely immersed in work and resistance activities… it was often considered repetitive if she was being honest. There were so many other things that she could be doing right at this very moment but she was chosen for a reason due to nobody else being able to do the job properly.

Although rewarding, she wouldn't lie to herself… It was pretty stressful. Not to mention boring being the leader of a resistance group against the creatures of pure darkness. An honorable but slow job.

Especially the current task that she was doing - filling in the ledger with this month's needs for the refugee world of Moonlight. Letting out a soft sigh, she continued to check the current resources available as well as food, medicine and other stuff needed for keeping the populace safe for the foreseeable future…

This young woman whose moderate cyan eyes depicted nothing apart from tiredness and boredom scanned the words in the ledger while her fair-skinned fingers ran through her moderate sapphire blue long-styled hair with a grayish Persian blue outline.

She wore attire that was reminiscent of royalty: it consisted of a light-dark blue top with a Moon symbol that showcased her cleavage, a light blue arm bracelet was on her right hand while a disconnected long sleeve covered her left. Her lower attire was a dark blue skirt that covered her knees and lastly light blue sandals with blue soles adorned her feet. The dark crown rested atop her hair while a small string with a red rose held both the skirt and top together.

"Hmm… lumber for another month along with iron and copper. Food from the local worlds… it seems we'll be able to survive for a very long time. Provided the Heartless don't reach us first and steal the populace's heart and the heart of our world. Damn beasts…" The woman swore under her breath.

The name of those infernal creatures that plagued Moonlight World… quite a bothersome bunch they were. At first, they seem harmless due to their small appearances but then they attack and try to feast on the heart. Their sizes were also troublesome - some had sharp claws and wings, others had armor. And the scariest thought when it came to the Heartless was the fact that they multiply like rabbits. Cut one or two down and more show up to finish what they started.

Luckily for the populace, ordinary weapons such as swords, knives, guns, crossbows were effective in taking down a group of Heartless. As long as you were careful and did not get surrounded, you would last very easily. Unfortunately, the main problem was that ordinary weapons didn't have a very strong effect against the little vermin. Blessed weapons were the only way to truly eliminate them properly.

And of course… there was the 'legend'. A weapon considered by many to be a blessing and a curse. A weapon that the Heartless feared more than men and women themselves. A weapon forged millennia ago… the Keyblade. If only it were easy to acquire…

The books weren't helpful since they just described the legend about it along with its capabilities, the history and the different feats of Keyblade Masters. No idea on how to summon it, how to call upon a wielder or how to give someone the power to use it. All-in-all, it was definitely a failure and why Moonlight World was under constant threat from the Heartless.

After writing the last sentences in the ledger for the current day, the woman was finally done and released a huge sigh of relief. Getting up, she stretched her arms and blocked a yawn with her right hand. "Good. Now I can finally get some rest and see about the patrols. Hopefully the kids haven't gotten their hearts eaten by those damn Heartless."

The last thing she wanted to see was more meaningless deaths caused by those damn creatures. Most of the Resistance patrol squad were children that reminded the woman of her old home and its inhabitants. The home that she had lost years ago…

Just as she was about to head off for the radio station, she heard a knock on the door which snapped the woman to attention. "Yes. You can come in."

The door creaked open slowly as a young woman entered the room with a small smile on her face. "Miss Luna, we're back."

She looked no more than 16 or 17 years old with her chin-styled hair that was colored blonde while her eyes were completely blue. Underneath her long-sleeved silver-colored jacket was a tight sleeveless turtleneck red belly shirt with a white tie underneath with some bubble shorts and black high-heeled boots for footwear. A cowboy hat rested atop her head as well.

The woman called Luna smiled as well. "Hello, Patty. How did the patrol go? Anything bad to report?"

Patty shook her head. "Nothing bad, miss. A few Heartless here and there but we took care of them easily. Liz kept a brave face on but I could tell she was very scared. Hunting Heartless isn't an easy task."

Luna gave a nod in response. "It never is… damn monsters just keep on coming back." She finished with a sigh.

Patty pitied her since she too had lost her world to those damn monsters long ago… that was nearly a year ago. They just appeared one day and started attacking everyone in sight… no matter how much she and her friends had put up a decent fight, it was all in vain. Their world was destroyed and the only survivors were herself and her older sister. Nobody else had made it off… at least that is what they believed.

They were thankful that Luna took them both in and gave them a new home… although her older sister was still in the process of grieving alone and not showing her recognition at first. She wanted to be alone despite Patty's persistence…

Patty's thoughts were interrupted by Luna placing a hand on her shoulder. "Are you both alright? I know you've been through a lot…"

It was nice of Luna to ask her that… Patty appreciated the gesture with a small smile. "We'll make it, Miss… Liz's just warming up to you. Give it a bit more time."

Luna nodded but let out a soft sigh. "I wish there was something else I could do to help you both."

"Miss Luna, you already helped us enough by taking us both in and making us members of the resistance against the Heartless. If it wasn't for you, big sis and I wouldn't know what to do… plus, one day the worlds that were lost could be restored to normal. We're not gonna lose hope right now."

Patty's words made Luna feel grateful and somewhat saddened due to the fact that it wasn't just Liz or her little sister that were suffering because of their home being lost. Other children in the refugee world were also without their parents and most of them had joined up the resistance to make sure that nobody else would go through the same fate as they had.

But seeing them fight with weapons made Luna feel saddened… were so many willing to sacrifice their innocence in order to battle Heartless and protect the populace?

In the end, all Luna did was sigh which made Patty look at her with a worried expression. "Are you okay, Miss Luna?"

Luna gave Patty a small smile. "Of course, honey. Just… feeling down and tired, is all."

"Okay… do you want to take a break?" Patty asked.

Luna shook her head. "I'll be fine, honey. I just need some fresh air. Mind if you and your sister hold down the fort until I return?"

"Yes, Miss! We'll hold it to the last man… or women, in this case." Patty gave a mock salute as Luna giggled at her silliness.

Luna then took off to get some fresh air and clear her mind. She didn't see Liz along the way to the exit and came to the conclusion that the blonde had gone to get some rest. Probably a good idea.

Exiting the base, she looked around for any signs of Heartless showing up or the yellow eyes appearing on the ground yet nothing. Good… at least she could take her break without any interruptions.

Perhaps she could pay a visit to Glynda and see how she was doing so far. The two were close friends and often shared information in regards to the Heartless or the outside worlds.

Luna wondered if Glynda had managed to pick any new students to unleash her strictness on… with a snicker released, the blue-haired woman was amused at the prospect of the class being subjugated to the Dominatrix's activities and learning methods.

Looking up, she saw that one of the stars had blinked… and then it was snuffed out! She gasped… a world had gone extinct! This was definitely not a good sign. If a world was just destroyed, then it meant that Heartless were responsible for the deed… and not just that, new refugees would be landing in Moonlight World soon.

Luna definitely had to be on the lookout for new arrivals and-

The woman froze as she heard a groan nearby… curious and intrigued, she picked up her pace and started following the groans which were becoming more frequent and closer. Turning around, she froze…

On the ground and leaning towards a brick wall was a young teenage woman whose clothes were tattered and had various rips all around her clothes. Luna kneeled and checked her pulse… It was warm.

A good sign to note that the girl was still alive. Yet, she needed medical attention ASAP. The last thing needed was more Heartless picking up her scent and attacking her…

As Luna picked her up, something occurred to her… she was discovered just immediately in this alleyway… and a star had just blinked out. Was it possible… that this girl was from the world that was snuffed out?

It was the only logical explanation at this time. Anything else could wait… for now, this girl was in need of medical attention.

(An unspecified amount of time later…)

"Hello… get up." A voice demanded calmly as Ruby felt herself getting shaken awake yet the only thing that came out was a groan.

The shaking got harder along with the voice. "Wakey-wakey, girlie."

Ruby still remained asleep until…

"Oh, for the love of- WAKE UP!"

Ruby snapped her eyes open as she started to cough heavily along with beads of sweat dripping down from her face. What the hell happened last night… the last thing she remembered was… a storm?

She couldn't really remember much from last night… and that moving hand wasn't helping. Wait, moving hand…

She followed the hand to its owner who was looking at her intently.

The person in question was a young woman whose skin was the color of a medium-brown with her dark-red eyes staring at her. Her hair was a light, mint-green with a straight fringe and bangs as well as two long locks on each side in the back.

She wore a mint green crop top with off the shoulder pulled back sleeves beneath a cropped white quilted leather, double breasted biker jacket contrasted with black notch lapels with matching cuffs alongside an emblem on the back in black as well as a belt loop at the bottom of the jacket's hem. Completing her ensemble were matching white skinny jeans and brown chaps that ended at her thighs, they appeared flared with a small open section with straps on the lower calves.

The tops and bottoms of the chaps have a mint green trimming to them as well. She also wore an overlong belt, twice-wrapped, to which her chap straps connect to. She kept a set of weapon holsters attached to the back of the belts. Finishing her outfit were a pair of brown ankle boots with metal toe plating. Her hair was noticeably fuller and longer along with her irises being widened. A red gem pendant sat around her neck.

The woman kept examining her for any damages and even touched Ruby's face gently. The young teen's cheeks reddened with a blushing color. Being touched by another woman, a cute one at that, was quite an alien concept to her.

Seconds later, the woman was done. "Hmm… nothing serious. You feeling alright, kid?"

Ruby gave a small nod and then rubbed her head. "My head hurts though… I can't remember a thing to be honest."

The woman sighed. "Memory loss. No surprise there given how you found yourself on Moonlight World."

"Moonlight… World? Is that like a neighborhood on Patch Island or one of the nearby towns?"

The woman raised a brow. "Patch Island? Is that an island or a town?" She questioned.

"An island. Is it anywhere close to Moonlight World?"

The woman looked away and scratched her head awkwardly. This would definitely be hard to explain to her since she wasn't sure if she knew anything about the Heartless and her world being devoured by them.

How to explain it tactfully without causing any harm whatsoever…? Perhaps Luna could be of assistance. The woman should be able to clear up any confusion and explain the situation more delicately. She could explain but she wasn't sure how the girl would take it.

The woman stood up. "So… ummmm…?" She rubbed her head due to not knowing her name. Luckily, she was saved by the stranger giving a reply quickly. "Ruby. Ruby Rose."

"Pleased to meet you, Ruby. I'm Emerald Sustrai - the nurse and medical chief of the resistance against the Heartless." The woman, whose name was revealed to be Emerald, introduced herself with a smile.

"Ooh… it's a fitting name. Because of the color of your hair." Ruby complimented as Emerald found herself blushing.

"T-thank you… um, anyways… I'm sure you have a lot of questions but I don't exactly have the answers that you'll like. So, here's what we're going to do - I'm going to bring a friend of mine who can explain things more clearly. Can I ask you to wait a bit?"

"I don't mind. Will she be able to help me out by pointing me in the right direction to my island?" Ruby questioned.

Emerald nodded albeit holding back a gulp. The poor kid… so naïve. She was soon going to learn that her world was possibly lost forever to the darkness and the Heartless after they assaulted it. From Emerald's possible best guess, the next thing that would happen was a meltdown and a crying fit… then rage… and then… Well, that was the question: What comes later.

With everything cleared, Emerald stood up and prepared to leave the room but not before sending a small smile to Ruby. "I'll be right back. Rest for as long as you need, kay?"

After receiving a nod from Ruby, Emerald left the room to go and fetch Luna. The 15-year old laid back down on the top of the pillow before sighing and closing her eyes.

Questions remained on her mind: Where was she? What was this place? Where the hell was her island? Why wasn't she back on it?

But a single and important question plagued: Whatever happened to Blake?

She received no answers and only pure silence… It saddened her. What was going to happen now…?
