Alright, I had no idea that this would be as well-received as this, but 113 favorites and 160 followers in just under 3 weeks is not bad, not bad at all. From what I've been able to tell with what I have planned, and how I typically write chapters, that assertion that this will be 40K or less may not be accurate as chapter 1 was just supposed to be 8K words but we all know how that went…So the new estimate that I'll try my hardest to keep is 60K or less.
Chapter 2: Why don't you sit back and let me corrupt you?
Four days had passed since Midoriya and Pixie-bob had their fateful talk in the woods, because of finally getting all that worry off his chest and telling her the truth, had having received her understanding and forgiveness, Midoriya had calmed down from his state of depression and self-loathing, which though his friends were happy about, none of them knew why he recovered, never mind what caused him to walk around like he killed a puppy as whenever they brought it up, he would just smile and tell them it was because he wanted to push himself to be the best hero he can be and that he was just overreacting to something minor.
What he didn't tell them was though his reasoning hadn't necessarily changed, he did gain a new goal which was to gain both the strength and experience to be able to stand side by side Pixie-bob as he took her words about earning that right seriously…and no, he understood what she meant perfectly and he was determined to be worthy of her in every sense of the word. In those four days, he was regularly placed with Pixie-bob in the last 3 hours of the training day so he could work on his Full Cowling technique as Aizawa wanted him to increase his limit from 5% to at least 7% by the end of the camp, he thought that was too small of a change but the ever tired pro reminded him that his quirk had the tendency of breaking his bones and they didn't have Recovery Girl on hand if he did, so they had to play it safe for now.
Still, he enjoyed that time as it gave them to have a normal conversation as they worked, learning more about the other such as interests and hobbies but nothing too personal. That was how he learned that she was a movie buff, especially the classics and for some reason, the really…really bad ones. When he asked her why she just said that to produce something that horrible is an art form in itself. He also learned that she loved hamsters, more the cats but the others didn't, so they went for the cat theme, still, she wasn't ashamed to admit she has owned the same hamster family since she was 8, she even had pictures of her phone of them and from how she talked about them, it was like they were her overachieving kids.
It was extremely embarrassing for him to admit that he didn't have much going outside of training and studying, well, there was his hero obsession but saying it out loud like that left the older woman laughing her head off, at least unlike all the other girls that found out, she made sure he understood she wasn't making fun of him. 'Come here, little kitten. I'm sorry if I hurt your feeling, does this make it all better?' He recalled her hugging him as she rubbed their cheeks together, the smile never leaving her face as his own went nuclear, even if his monkey was very much happy with it as he didn't stop smiling like an idiot till Bakugo yelled at him for it later.
"Honestly, if it was anyone else, I would have felt insulted." Midoriya thought aloud as he didn't quite understand why he wasn't insulted, only that he didn't feel like he was.
"Insulted by what?" Someone spoke out of the blue, scaring the crap out of him.
"AAAH!, Todoroki, you scared me!" Midoriya said as he tried to calm down his heart, behind him were Todoroki and Iida, both of whom looked like they didn't expect him to react like that.
"How did I do that? All I did was just walk up to you." Todoroki asked him as they hadn't tried to be sneaky, maybe they hadn't stepped on any leaves or twigs? Before he could go down that rabbit hole, Iida placed a hand on his shoulder.
"I think he meant that he just wasn't paying attention, which I need to remind you is no excuse, Midoriya, one must always be aware of their surroundings and others, it would be rude otherwise!" Iida explained to them, being calm and quick to the point with Todoroki before he turned to reprimand his other friend.
"T-thanks, Iida. I'll keep that in mind." Midoriya replied, not that surprised that Iida took this as a chance to scold him, it was just built into who he was.
"Speaking of manners, did you get the chance to apologize yet?" Todoroki asked him, raising the question they had come to ask him.
"OH, yeah. I did and she accepted it." Midoriya replied, being honest with them but leaving out some details he knew neither would react well to.
"We thought so, we talked about it and figured it was the only reason you would be so happy lately." Iida explained as when he hadn't given them a straight answer before, they had got together to talk about what could be the possible reasons for his 180 in his general mood.
"Was it that obvious?" He asked them, he hadn't told them before since he didn't see the point, though thinking back on it now, he found that his reasoning wasn't as solid as he thought at the time.
"It was, Uraraka and Asui were talking about it earlier, we can continue as a group once the food is ready." Todoroki told him as he was getting close to dinner, they just needed to wait a little longer for food to be served.
"Yeah." Midoriya replied as he walked back with them, wondering how in the hell is he going to spin the events of that day without giving away too much, he was never good under pressure unless it was life or death. 'Oh boy.'
(Later)
"So, any improvements lately?" Asui asked the group as a whole as they ate their food.
"Hmmm! Yeah, it's hard work but I sure getting results, I can now lift like 8 cars worth of weight without throwing up!" Uraraka replied as she had been making some good progress with her quirk, if things kept up, she wouldn't have to worry about her limit in a fight for a long time.
"Nothing to report so far." Todoroki stated, feeling frustrated that his training with his fire was moving at a snail's pace.
"Don't feel bad, Todoroki, you have mainly used ice for years, no one expects you to be an ace with your fire yet." Uraraka told him to cheer him up as she had noticed his demeanor during training, it was like Bakugo's but less angry at everything else and more, and more angry at himself.
"Still, it's frustrating that it's proving to be this hard." Todoroki said as he didn't think they had the time for him to play catch-up, even with his ass of a father giving him tips during their internships, he was as good as any 7-year-old with their emitter quirk when it came to his fire.
"Well, if you ever need aid, I'll be sure to be there to lend a helping hand." Iida told him, getting a small smile out of him.
"That's nice of you, Iida." Todoroki replied to which Iida started his arm chopping.
"Of course, that is my duty as class president and my pleasure as his friend!" He told them, getting amused reactions from all of them, though like usually it was hard to tell with Asui.
"Where does he get the energy(Kero)?" Asui asked which he didn't have an answer for, so she decided to move the conversation along. "I've been working on something myself which is coming along nicely."
"Really, what is it?" Uraraka asked, to which she didn't budge.
"It's a secret, I'll show you guys when it's done." Asui replied as she wanted them to be just as surprised as their enemies will be when she breaks it out.
"I've been trying to improve my stamina and it seems to be working, even if the improvements are marginal at present, I'm sure by the time we return, they would have stacked up." Iida told them as he had been doing nothing but long-distance running since the camp started.
"You're not working on speed?" Midoriya asked him as he would have thought that the speed-based guy would want to build on that.
"No, I have Engine Boost and Recipro Burst for speed, so right now I'm trying to increase the amount of time I can run for, if I can run for longer, I can save more people like my brother before me." Iida replied, looking like he was slightly ashamed of something but also wanting to move on and improve on himself. Both Midoriya and Todoroki knew where he was coming from, but since they had been barred from telling people about it, they held their peace and were just happy for him.
"That makes sense, slow and steady wins the race!" Uraraka laughed out as she imagined a turtle with an engine exhaust sticking out of its shell as it moved at a walking pace from one place to another.
"He's not slow." Todoroki responded, confused about the comparison.
"What about you, Deku? Any improvements?" Asui asked him, getting him to swallow his food before he replied.
"Well, I've been working on increasing my limits and I've gotten it to maybe…6%" Midoriya told them, having already filled them in on his Full Cowling move he's been using for a while now.
"Wait, what was it before?" Iida asked as he had no idea that he was using such a small portion of his power, he always assumed it was like a quarter.
"5%" Midoriya replied, not noticing his friends looking at him like he was about to burst into flames and become the new sun.
"Wait, you mean that new thing you've been doing as you at 5% power?" Asui asked him, getting a nod from him. "(Kero)Man, you have one crazy quirk, Midoriya. If I didn't know any better, I'll say you were All Might's kid since he's the only one with power even close to that." She told him, happy that neither Bakugo nor Monoma were anywhere near as there was no way that those two loud-mouths wouldn't have made an issue out of this.
"He's not, I already asked and he said they weren't related." Todoroki spoke up, ending that line of questioning before it could begin as he could tell that they wanted to know more after that comparison.
'Saved by Todoroki, I owe you one!' Midoriya thought to himself as he needed to call his mentor so that he could work on his cover story.
"So then, you have any goals set? You gunning to push it to 100%?" Uraraka asked him, having the image in her head of Midoriya taking out the Zero pointer but this time he didn't break his bones in the attack and lands without issue.
"No don't think that's possible seeing how that would break my arms…again. I'm aiming for 10%" Midoriya shot that down as he had to be careful with his expectations. Sure, he wanted 100% right off the bat but he had to play it slow and steady for now.
"Doubling it?" Todoroki asked him, wondering what his performance would be after thy complete camp.
"Yeah, it might sound like a small change, but since my quirk came in super late, I need to work slowly with it and play catch up with you guys." Midoriya told them, which was the truth as part of the reason he worked so hard was that he felt like he had to, just because All Might chose him doesn't mean there weren't others, he started this race with the rules making exceptions for him, the least he could do was take that chance the make the most of it.
"I wouldn't worry about it too much," Todoroki started as he turned back to his food. "With your work effort, we'll be the ones playing catch-up soon enough."
"He's right, which is why we must put extra diligence into our training!" Iida told them as he started to advise them on ways they could just that, much to the amusement of the group as they took the chance to relax and enjoy themselves after a hard day's training.
(With the teachers)
"Things seem to be moving along quite nicely." Meanwhile, while the students ate their dinner, the teachers did the same away from them, allowing them to freely discuss their plans and student's performances without someone eavesdropping.
"Agreed, from what I've seen, the students seem to be reacting well to their training." Vlad agreed with his co-worker before he turned to the Pussycats. "Once again, I would like to thank you for allowing us the use of your property for this." He bowed them, something that Mandalay waved off.
"No sweat, with the League as active as ever, you guys needed someone not connected to UA to bring them." She told them as none of them had any prior connections to the school, not even internships or work studies so they were perfect for a training camp.
"Speaking of them, they appear to be on the move but as to what, we don't know yet." Aizawa spoke up, getting all their attention.
"Anywhere close?" Ragdoll asked, for once having none of the energetic zeal that the students had seen from her at all times, she was in all business mode and came hell or high water, she wouldn't let anyone bring their charges harm.
"No, so at least we can assume for now they have no idea where we are." Aizawa replied as he had only got off the phone with Principal Nezu a short time ago where the mouse…bear…dog whatever he is, informed him of such.
"That is a relief, the last thing we need is a bunch of monsters running amok around here." Tiger spoke up as with such a large area, handling threats would be a challenge, even with Ragdoll being capable of tracking large amounts of people.
"Which is why we're rushing through their training as fast as we can, speaking of." Vlad agreed with him on that as they had wanted to remain here for the entirety of summer, but Nezu didn't think it smart to stay in one place for too long, even if they were hiding.
"Pixie-bob, how is Midoriya's training going?" Aizawa asked, changing to the topic to student performance. At getting put on the spot like this, the blonde took a moment to swallow her drink before replying.
"It's moving along pretty nicely, he's a quick learner so I have to increase the workload." She told them, having been impressed with the boy's work ethic, he just never seemed to want to quite something unless it was truly worthless or he had mastered it. And it was through their talks that she learned a lot about him as while it was clear he was sweet and understanding, she had no idea that he was like an adorable little bunny rabbit, full of energy and optimism but not the most social, or confident.
The number of times she got him to lose focus because she said something PG16 was astounding. She told him it was field training as he couldn't afford to freeze and mess up just cause some pretty gal showed him some skin or made a risky comment. In actuality, she was just messing with him as he had caught her attention and she wanted to see more of his character, fair to say that she was still very much interested in him, his obvious crush on her not counting as she caught him when he thought she wasn't looking checking her out, but unlike others, he's gaze never stayed on her ass or boobs for more than a few moments, he wasn't drawn by them.
He was drawn in by everything as he always looked at her as she were a fine portrait, appreciating the entire thing over just a few parts. She hadn't really…experienced that as while she was confident about her looks and never had an issue with people eyeing her assets, his gaze just made her feel…different…special? She didn't know, but she did like the fuzzy feeling she got whenever she thought about how he was attracted to her for more than just her body, which had ended a lot of dates before they began. Who knows, maybe she'll look him up in a couple of years, see if he's still single but from how that brown-haired cupcake of a classmate was eyeing him, she doubted it.
"The training isn't to improve his fighting ability, it's to increase his body's tolerance to his quirk." Aizawa cracked her out of that bubble as he reminded her of their training's purpose.
"Then I'll adjust things accordingly." She conceded as she could make the dirt monsters stronger, and force him to fight with more power, but that would mean she would need to spend more time on each one, so her current strategy of just bombard him with opponents wouldn't work.
"Still, to have such a later bloomer, never thought it would be possible." Vlad spoke up as he rubbed his chin. His statement catching the pussycat's attention as they had no idea Midoriya was a late bloomer.
"I've asked Recovery Girl and Principal Nezu, they both also find it suspect but quirks are notorious for how unpredictable they can be, still he's a problem child." Aizawa replied as he always wished to know as much about his students as he could from there, he could develop the best lesson plans for each one and allocate his attention to those who needed it most. It was why he placed Todoroki into group or team assignments to try and get him to open up to others, why he placed Yaoyorozu into a position of responsibility so that he could test her self-esteem and give her chances to improve.
It was why Mineta often found himself working with girls as while some may think he should just have been reprimanded or expelled, Aizawa saw him as someone that needed to reign in those teenage hormones and work on self-control as he could be a fine pro but only if he could get past his issues. It was why was weary of Bakugo in the beginning as while his record was spotless, his attitude made that extremely unlikely and therefore, Aizawa concluded his middle school doctored the records so he could be more appealing to UA. Something a secret investigation proved and led to them being placed on the, unfortunately, growing list of blacklisted institutions that hero schools would automatically reject.
But Midoriya…he was a special case, by which he meant a special headache.
'Problem child?' Pixie-bob thought to herself as she hadn't had a single issue with him besides his self-confidence.
"How so? He seems like a good student." Ragdoll asked the question that she wanted to.
"He acts much too much like All Might, rushing into things without thinking it through, or at all." Aizawa told them, thinking back to what he learned about the USJ since he was unconscious for the latter half of it. Then there was the sealed police report about the Hosu incident which they shared with them. "He applied to the hero course when his quirk hadn't manifested yet, he had every intention of doing it without one." He told them all, getting a surprised reaction from the cats as applying to the hero course without a quirk was like trying to learn to paint blind, it was possible but surely there were other things you could spend your time on.
"And is that a bad thing? We did remove the quirk requirement rule some time ago." Vlad asked as he hadn't been opposed to allowing his entry, though he was disappointed that he was the only one to apply without a quirk as the other 8 had either applied for Business or general, with the majority in general.
"And do you recall how he carried himself? He froze when a villain bot appeared and spent the entire exam running around like an idiot." Aizawa reminded him of the lackluster performance they had seen from Midoriya that day, Aizawa remembered writing him off as just another kind in over his head. Many kids had quirks that proved ineffective and yet they managed just fine as people like Mineta, though scared for most of it scored, Hagakure managed even though the bot saw in infrared so her invisibility proved fruitless. Heck, even Shinso put on a better performance as he tried to take down bots using creative if ultimately pointless plans.
"Wait, if he didn't score a single point, how did he even get in?" Mandalay asked as while none of them had attended UA, most people knew about their entrance exam so she found it odd that with such a poor performance, Midoriya somehow managed.
"That's where the recklessness All Might imitation comes in, when the Zero pointer appeared, he charged and destroyed it because another applicant, Uraraka appeared to be in danger." Aizawa told them as it had been quite the shock that most ineffective and terrified of the bunch had the balls to charge the largest and most powerful threat. Sure, UA would never have allowed an applicant to get hurt as he must that feared for Uraraka, but he didn't know that as the exam was designed to see how applicants react in the heat of the moment when they don't have time to think, just act.
That would normally be enough to earn his respect but, "And in doing so, he broke both his legs and his arm. A glass cannon at best, and a liability at worst as he didn't earn a single villain point." Yeah, how his quirk broke him was the major issue as Midoriya went in without knowing he had power, and when he got it, he didn't have any control over it. If not for Recovery Girl, he would have spent quite some time in a hospital and miss other exams for other schools.
'Jeez, Eraser sure doesn't like him.' Pixie-bob thought to herself as it was clear to her that the underground hero did not have a high opinion of the boy. Sure, he wasn't the most ideal student, but as teachers that shouldn't matter, and if was so bad in the start, his current performance was proof that he was worth the investment.
"I do recall that you gave him rescue points for that, Eraser." Vlad told him, eyeing his colleague who didn't even bat an eye.
"I gave him 5, the lowest of the bunch as it means nothing if you act heroically to save one person and end up needing to be saved yourself. All you did is swapped out the person in danger, nothing changed." Aizawa didn't care if a pro saved someone if they needed to be saved, it was pointless as someone still dies. It was why he hated stories where the hero gives his life to save another's. it solved nothing and worse, you now have a died pro on their hands as if someone like All Might died for something like that, they would all be in trouble as their symbol would be gone. Life wasn't a fairy tale and pros needed to think things through, they can't save people if they couldn't even save themselves.
"Which is why I put him with you." Aizawa surprised the cats when he looked towards the blonde.
"Excuse me? Sounds like you wouldn't even want him in your class." Tiger asked him as from how he talked about him, you would think that Aizawa didn't even want to give the boy the time of day, something that Vlad found funny for the following reasons.
"It's because of the flaws that I wanted him in 1-A, so I can make sure he irons out as many of them as he can before he rushes into a dangerous situation. He's not the type to stop, even if it means his own life or limbs." Aizawa told them as he had picked out Midoriya over Shiozaki for 1-A so that he could help the boy make something of himself. He was harsh and unfair, but only because he truly believed in his students and didn't want to give them false hope, to hear about how they died in the line of duty. If he didn't think Midoriya could cut it, it would have booted him on the first day, regardless of how he scored.
He also knew that the boy was too much like All Might to let things like lack of training or legal authority stop him from trying his hand, with his quirk being so self-destructive and the boy's lack of control or real self-restraint when it came to hero work, he would have ended up arrested, dead or crippled, from self-inflicted wounds, mind you, in a week, tops.
"On the first day, when he thought he could be expelled for not meeting my expectations, he was smart and desperate enough, to break his finger so that he could keep going." Aizawa told them, having been impressed at his creativity, even if it was slightly put off by the fact a first-year was willing to break bones just to keep their spot.
"He did that on the first day?" Pixie-bob asked him, like the rest of the cats she was stunned by that reveal as she didn't think she knew anyone sane back in high school that would do that. Heck, if she was in his shoes, she would have just accepted the expulsion and tried again at another school, if she even still had in her to do so.
"As I said, he tends not to think with his head but go with his heart, so all I can do to prepare him as much as possible so that he doesn't die on his first day as a pro." Aizawa told them all, showing them that he was a hard-ass, and something of a taskmaster, but he was also rational and caring.
"His quirk is nothing like anything I've ever seen, but it seems to be a physical enhancement type, if you can help him master a higher level of control, his odds of success and survival will shoot up." He finished as he was extremely impressed with how the boy had grown throughout the first semester as he went from breaking into limbs to only breaking fingers to not breaking anything. He didn't know how he made such leaps and bounds in such a short amount of time, all he knew was that he spent more time with All Might than most, took an old pro's offer and before the internships were done, he had found a way to limit himself. He would have to speak with this veteran and ask him for tips as if he could get the rest of his class to improve at even a fourth Midoriya's speed, they would be golden.
"I'll do my best then, we can't have the younger bunch be clueless forever, can we?" Pixie-bob agreed to it, having her opinions change about this ragged and tired-looking man. If he was going to ensure that Midoriya was as prepared as possible, she'll do her part to ensure that.
(The next day)
The next day, Midoriya found himself training with the larger group as Pixie-bob fixed up something for his training. Because of this, he was placed with Tiger again to work on his body without his quirk just like their second day there. Unlike their second day though, Tiger was more focused on the rest of them which was fine by him. Fewer bruises but it did allow him to study how he moved. This was what led to him getting a 'great idea'.
"Tiger-sensei?" Midoriya spoke up, making sure to keep moving as he did.
"Hmm?" The pro asked as he turned to face him, having been sparring with a student of 1-B but was giving them a kind of break.
"If it's not too much trouble, could you please show me some of your moves?" Midoriya asked him, catching him off guard.
"Why is that?" Tiger asked as he and the rest of the cats weren't combat-specialists by any interpretation of the word.
"Well, I thought that I could learn a lot from how you fight and use them as well." Midoriya replied though the response he got wasn't one he or any of the students there expected as Tiger threw back his head in laughter.
"Hahahahahahaha!"
"You don't have to laugh! A simple no would have been enough!" Midoriya yelled back.
"Apologies, I'm not laughing at your request, I'm laughing that you asked me of all people to teach you." Tiger said as he rose a hand up as he tried to control himself. His answer being enough that Midoriya paused.
"Why is that surprising?" Midoriya asked, finding his amusement weird and out of place.
"I doubt our fighting style would suit a bunny-themed hero like yourself." Tiger told him before turning back round to continue with their training, something his sparring partner was…really 'excited' with.
"Bunny?" Midoriya asked, confused as he had no special preference towards animals, sure he liked them but he didn't act or look like one.
"Your teachers showed us what your hero costumes looked like so get our opinions on them, Ragdoll called it as soon as she saw it, called you super bunny with those ears you added to them." Tiger explained, telling them all that their costumes had been viewed which meant that they'll either be getting feedback or not. With Midoriya, he felt his face grow red with embarrassment and irritation at how Tiger and the rest of them took his costume.
'Those aren't bunny ears! They were supposed to be styled off All Might's hairstyle!' Midoriya yelled in his head, angered that his homage to his hero wasn't even noticed. Though, he did realize that telling people wouldn't be much better as that was peak fan-boy territory. Tiger's next words just made it worse.
"Gotta say, didn't take you for a Mirko fan, or maybe you're Zootopia fan. Anyway, someone like you would be better suited for a leg-centric fighting style to go with the bunny motif." Tiger told him, adding salt to the wound as his mind jumped to what he knew about the Rabbit Hero and while he found her to be extremely attractive, he had a couple of posters of her he hadn't found the space on his walls to put up after-all, with her rough, confident(arrogant) and no-shit attitude reminding him of Bakugo, she wasn't his type-no matter how thick her thighs are.
The second rabbit comparison was a little more…reasonable(?) as he knew the movie, having watched it and loved its message as in a lot of ways, he was Judy Hopps of his own story, trying to enter law enforcement despite being quirkless. He didn't have a Nick Wilde, though he supposed he had a Finnick-like friend in Bakugo as both are loud and violent, with more though, he also found himself connecting Aizawa to Bogo as his teacher and imposing cape buffalos also scared some traits, like being extra hard on him. Plus, there was the bonus that he was sure to see at least a few people on the job with animal quirks that matched up with the movie. But it was the last thing that he said that stuck out to him. "A leg-centric fighting style?" He repeated as he had always fought with his arms, like Bakugo and All Might but he…wasn't them….'Hold on…leg…centric…'
"I have legs!" Out of nowhere, Midoriya yelled out his claim as if he had just uncovered a new fundamental law of nature, his cry was so loud that not just those with him at present heard him as others paused in their training to stare at him, wondering about his sanity.
"Um, yeah, dude you're using them right now." Kaibara said, wondering if he should leave before the crazy starts getting to him. With that little message, Midoriya felt all the awkwardness crashing down on him as some like Bakugo looked at him like they wanted him to explode while others either ignored him and tried to get back to training while some like Kendo looked at him with concern, which was somehow worse as that meant she was one of those questioning his sanity. Still, even with the embarrassment on him for his weird proclamation, he found himself getting some ideas…he'll be spending quite a bit of time on the internet later.
"Sorry!"
(Later)
"Iida, Asui, I need your help!" Midoriya ran up to his friends as they prepared things for their dinner.
"Call me, Tsu." Asui reminded him as she went back to cutting while Iida washed fruits next to her.
"Right, sorry! I need your help working on my legs!" Midoriya asked them as he had been thinking about it all day and he realized that he had been copying All Might too much, to the detriment of his performance as his hero focused on his punches but he needed to use his whole body, which meant he needed some tips from his classmates that made ample use of their legs in and outside of combat.
"But I thought you were working on your limit." Iida asked him as it was just the previous day that he was saying one thing.
"I can do both, can't I? Please, it would mean a lot to me if you did!" Midoriya asked as he bowed to them, his insistence for their help would be weird but not for him.
"(Kero) There's no need for begging, we'll help." Asui told him, getting a nod from Iida.
"Yes, what are friends for, so tell us, why the sudden request?" Iida asked him as the three went about their dinner duties, which got him to tell them what he had come to realize.
"Wait, you only realized today that you can use your legs in such a manner?" Asui asked him, shocked that something so simple had flown over his head for so long. Midoriya for his part was embarrassed by it but he felt like he owed them the truth.
"…Y-yeah..?" He responded. His admittance to not picking up on something so obvious froze the two for a moment before they got back to work with Iida doing his best to hide the smile on his face while Asui had a much better poker face, despite the fact she was blushing a bit from having to hold in her laughter.
"You really are a huge All Might fanboy, didn't even consider possibilities because he doesn't." Asui asked him as she croaked out a giggle before she stuffed it back in, sadly for her, Midoriya noticed.
"It was a mistake, alright! Can't we just move along now?" Midoriya asked the two of them, hoping that they can let it go but he wasn't in for some luck.
"Not until Uraraka and Todoroki hear this." Iida said as he finished up washing the last of the vegetables and dried off his hands.
"Why?!" Midoriya asked him, his face pale at the implications of this becoming a running joke.
"They might have suggestions for you, you know." Asui said in defense of their taller friend who nodded his head.
"She is right, if you're looking for wisdom, then it would be wise to cast the net as wide as net as possible!" Iida said as he started speed walking away to get the girl in question, leaving the two alone as Midoriya looked at the fire, thinking about the pros and cons of incineration.
"Why did you do that?" He asked her, after deciding that he couldn't turn himself to ash, the fire surely wasn't hot enough and someone would try and get him out before long.
"(Kero)You need to learn from your mistakes." Asui told him with a straight face, making him want to disappear as he held his face, just waiting for the end at this point.
'When did Tsu become so mean?' He yelled in his head as he knew this was going to become a thing.
(The next day)
'Hmmm, strange. I know that I adjusted his training, but he's moving completely differently than he was the last time we did this, he's breezing through them!' Ryuko found herself wondering as she watched as Midoriya worked through her revised training plan for him. Rather than have just fight hordes of monsters, she had him face off against much better ones which proved to be both faster, tougher, and stronger than the ones he or his class had faced earlier. The only issue was with speed as she couldn't make more than 2 at a time, because of this, she had charged him with a restriction in that he could only attack each one twice in a bid to try and force him to use a higher percentage of his power.
'Now that I think about it, he's movements…they remind me of someone, but who?' She thought to herself as she recalled seeing someone else fight like this, but was drawing a blank as to who it was. Coming into this, she thought he would fight like he had done up till this point, using his small size and speed to zip around and attack from as many angles as he could but boy was she wrong. From the beginning, Midoriya took this challenge in a whole new way as he made liberal use of jumps, dashes, flips, and literal bunny-like hops to both movements and avoid her monster's attacks. He then would use his weight and momentum build-up from these movements to land unexpectedly powerful attacks, almost off of them being focused on his legs with little punches and jabs being thrown, a complete change from his usual routine which employed mainly strikes from his arms.
And then it hit her as she watched as he landed an oh-so-familiar styled leg drop which took the head off of one of her monsters. 'Mirko! He's copying that damned rabbit! Why did Tomoko have to be right?!' She silently raged about how her friend seemed to have been right on the money with her guess. Seeing it now, she wished that he had just been a Judy Hopps fan but no, apparently, he liked his bunny girls dark-skinned. This of course has nothing to do with the fact that it had recently come out that for the 5th year in a row, the number 6th pro hero once again blew her out of the water in the top 100 sexiest pro heroines chat, with Pixie coming it at 43rd but that damn wabbit placing high at 3rd!
"Alright, Midoriya. I think we can take a 10-minute break." Pixie bob called out as she ceased her assault, letting the remaining beast crumble and fall to the ground.
"An hour's passed already?" Midoriya asked as he took some breaths and wiped some sweat off his forehead.
"Yep, time flies when you're having fun and you looked like you were having a ball out there, any reason?" Pixie asked him, curious as to why he made such a drastic change and why he seemed to have been enjoying going by the look on his face she saw throughout the entire thing.
"Oh, well, I had another talk with Tiger-" Midoriya started to explain as Pixie had her thoughts on the fact he went to her teammate again.
'Again with Tiger, when the hell did Yawara become such a fountain of wisdom? He can barely decide what to watch half the time!' That was the most confusing thing as she often couldn't rely on him to give good advice on what to watch whenever they had free time.
"And he mentioned that for someone like me, it would be best to try and use a more leg centric fighting style, so I spent a few hours online last night looking up any footage of Mirko and Ingenium in action and now I'm trying to incorporate some of that into my style." He finished his explanation as he had been up late looking for what he could find, having to wait for Aizawa to leave them to sleep and another 20 minutes to be sure before he plugged in his earphones and surfed the net.
"Sorry, if that came off as rumbly, really got into the zone there." He chuckled as he rubbed the back of his head as he was working on that.
"No need to apologies, you're a cute little chatterbox but," Pixie-bob gave him a smile which reminded him far too much of Mina's for his comfort as she got in close as if she had something on him. "Are you sure it's not because you use those videos of Mirko for some happy fun times?" And she did! As he felt his face turn hot red at the implications of that.
"What!" Midoriya squeaked/yelled out as his face was exploding with blush. He would never have done that, he respected her far too much of a pro and would never do…that to her. Even if she was supple, flexible yet sturdy, with a muscular and oh so extremely sexy figu-NO! He didn't do that, never! Unfortunately, his blush and lack of a concrete answer only fueled her further.
"And with all your friends sleeping in the same room, I must say, they're either all heavy sleepers or you're a quick and silent one, so which is it?" Pixie-bob pushed the issue as he found himself at an impasse, as while he would and should rationally pick neither and reaffirm that he didn't so such thing, but his mind wasn't in a rational space at the moment as the impure thoughts of Mirko clouded his mind.
"I-i-It's not like that!" He stumbled right into her trap as he didn't pick either of the options, but at the same time, he didn't deny them which only made things worse for him as Pixie-bob got in close, the big, scary(sex) cat was advancing on the little, scared rabbit.
"Hmmm? Are you saying you're above average?" She asked him as from his lackluster answer, he was implying something else.
.
.
.
"…I'm screwed no matter how I answer, aren't I?" He asked as he just gave up, he knew when he was beaten, and dammit, this somehow felt worse than when he used to get his ass kicked by Bakugo as he was supposed to be quick on his feet when he came to the mind.
"Yep! But don't worry, you'll learn…eventually but for now I get to have some fun at your expense, thank you very much." Pixie-bob laughed at her victory as she messed with his hair for a bit.
'Why do I have a bad feeling about this.' Midoriya asked himself as he had a feeling in his gut that he should get used to losing their little 'debates' to her more often than not.
"But seriously, I thought a hero nerd like you would already have tons of stuff on someone like Mirko. Aside from Yoroi Musha, she the top-ranked pro on fighting ability and outranks the old guy." She asked as she found it odd that he didn't know all that much about someone who had been in the top 10 for a couple of years now.
"Well, to be honest, I spent so much time on All Might alone that I kinda neglected pros I didn't see in action first hand but I've been improving." Midoriya admitted as before he got his quirk, he mainly focused on pros he saw live and didn't spend all that much time on others, hence why he had little on both Wash and Edgeshot…who was surprisingly easy to catch on camera for a ninja.
"Really?" She asked him as he seemed to start to peak up as the conversation shifted to something he was more comfortable with.
"Hmm! Now, I've been trying to research pros with quirks who had similar issues to mine, you know the block back part." Midoriya told her as he hadn't been sitting on his hands as Aizawa's warning to him and the entire class on the first day had been a wakeup call, even if it took him till Gran Torino to finally put the pieces back together.
"But who would qualify? I can't think of anyone in the top 50 who has a quirk that hurts them as much as yours did." Pixie replied as most of the top bracket for pros with emitter class quirks with the majority being mutants such as Mirko and Hawks. Though she also knew that some spots hadn't changed hands in quite a while such as the top two spots.
"It's been hard, but I did find out a lot of stuff that isn't on the news anymore." Midoriya knew what she was saying as he couldn't find anything he could use, which made his training all the more difficult as it wasn't like he could call up Gran Torino or All Might now, even if they were the only ones that could help him. But he did find out a lot of pro-themed trivia.
"Like what? My birthday?" Pixie-bob joked to which he nodded his head.
"Yep!"
"Wait, what?" She asked him as he looked at him, wondering where he was going with this and how he would know that. Info about pros was highly restrictive and only the bare minimum was ever made public.
"There was a minor story a couple of years back where you and the other cats stepped in to help save people from a burning office building and when asked by the local reporters about, Mandalay said that they were in town to celebrate your birthday and moved to help when you noticed the commotion." Midoriya explained as she recalled that day, she was pissed off that they abandoned their night on the town because a building caught fire. It wasn't even a fire attack, just shitty maintenance which led to a gas leak.
"I don't suppose she said which birthday it was." Pixie-bob asked him, playing it cool even if she figured he would bring up how old she was then. 'Dammit, Shino! You let that slip on purpose!' She didn't even know her friend and teammate gave an interview, she must have done it when her back was turned with all the commotion that was going on at the time.
"Not really, you guys left after that." Midoriya replied, being honest about it even if he wouldn't have brought up her age again. Iida had been clear about that point. "But hmmm, I was wondering," He started as he felt like this next part would be too intrusive but he was still curious after such a deep dive on the net.
"Come on now, you little kitten, I don't bite." Pixie-bob encouraged him as she poked both his cheeks, squashing his face a little and making him all the cuter to her.
"I was wondering if I couldn't ask you some questions, you don't have to say yes and I won't ask anything personal or perverted but I'm been really curious-" Midoriya started to ask while his cheeks were being smooshed, which made the following muttering all the more incomprehensible as Pixie-bob felt like she walked into that one.
'Jeez, he can ramble.' She thought to herself as she pulled back and tapped his forehead, drawing him out of whatever land he was just in. "Midoriya, you're muttering again. I can't hear a word you just said past asking to ask me some questions."
"Sorry!" She waved it off, it wasn't the weirdest thing she had seen and she wasn't going to shame him for his odd behavior, not when she and the rest of the cats were extremely weird in their own right.
"We need to work on that confidence of yours, but to answer your question. Yes, you ask me some questions, we still have some time to kill." She told him as she looked at the time and saw they still had a couple of minutes of rest before they get back to training.
"Really? Thank you so much, so-" Midoriya pepped right up as he pulled a notebook and pen out of…actually, where did he get them from.
'The hell?' Pixie-bob asked herself as she didn't recall him carrying anything like them there.
"What made you want to go pro? I mean, I know that almost everyone wants to be a pro when they're kids but what for you made it something you pursued in life?" Midoriya asked the most burning question he had for her as he wanted to know more about her.
"It wasn't something major, or profound as I just picked it on a whim back in middle school." Pixie-bob answered as she knew that whenever someone new entered the top 20, they got answered that question as she supposed it was standard fare.
"Really?" Midoriya paused as he didn't expect such a...mundane response.
"Yeah, most of my friends thought that my quirk would be great for hero work so I applied to Isamu Academy's hero course and got in, then decided to give it a shot and never changed." She told him as she didn't have a particular drive for her work and was more likely to have entered the civil service much like her mother and become a lawyer.
"What made you stay on the hero track then? I mean, there must have been other stuff you could have wanted to stay?" Midoriya pushed past that and asked the second question as even with only a single semester under his belt, he knew that the hero course was thought, and only for those who were there to put everything they had into it.
"I met Tiger." Pixie-bob told him with a small smile as she recalled her high school days fondly, especially after she met Yawara even if he was much smaller back then, being closer to her build before he started to bulk up like a tank.
"You went to the same school?" Midoriya wrote that down as he didn't know that tidbit of info, did that mean the other two cats weren't in the same school as them?
"Yep, even in the same class. We met in our first year and it didn't take long for us to become fast friends and study partners, I helped him a lot when finals came, and don't tell him I told you, but he's hopeless in history." Pixie-bob revealed to him as she winked at him, even if she knew that Yawara wouldn't raise a fuss about such things now.
"My lips are sealed." Midoriya still went along with it as he found a smile growing on his face.
"Smart. It was in our 2nd year that we met Ragdoll and Mandalay, they had transferred from Seiai Academy. He got paired together on some assignments and pretty soon, Ragdoll proposed we become a team." Pixie-bob gave him more he tried to imagine Ragdoll attending such a prim and proper school and failed. Maybe that was why she transferred as Seiai is close to Shiketsu when it comes to student discipline.
"Just like that?" Midoriya asked, wondering about that as he always assumed that there was…more to the Pussycats founding.
"Ragdoll's spontaneous like that, but yeah, just like that. Though we didn't have the matching gear yet, we got then in our 3rd year since we started to operate less like students and more like actual sidekicks back then." Pixie confirmed as Tomoko wasn't one to mince words and often blurted out whatever she thought was a good idea, honestly her scatterbrain nature made it easy to assume she wasn't smart but she was extremely intelligent.
"Amazing, I never knew about this." Midoriya was finding this to be a goldmine of info, even if most would deny that as he wished he had the time to ask the rest of the cats about this.
"Of course you didn't, silly. It's not like they are any biopics about us." Pixie-bob chuckled as it wasn't like there were that much, to begin with, with most focused around All Might to the point she wondered at times if he was real or just some fictional character that was really popular and therefore, profitable. Still, she felt like giving him a little game that they both of them could enjoy.
"But seeing how you're so inquisitive, I have a little quiz for you to solve." Pixie-bob told him, a glint to her eyes which he didn't notice.
"A quiz?" He repeated.
"Yep!" Pixie-bob exclaimed as if she had just had a grand idea. "It plays to your strengths as a hero nerd, so it shouldn't be too hard for you to solve in the time limit."
"I'll go for it!" Midoriya immediately agreed. Partly because he was a big fan of puzzles and mind-based games and partly because she seemed so eager about this that he couldn't turn it down.
"So full of energy and optimism, I wonder if it will do you any good." Pixie-bob asked him, a chill going down his spine at the look she was giving him but unlike whenever he got it around others, he found that he didn't so much dislike the feeling and more…felt his excitement grow.
"Anyway, the time limit is the rest of the camp, if you can solve the question, I'll give you an extra special surprise. The question is hard, only a few people know the answer to it, so here's your last chance to back out." Pixie-bob explained it to him, giving him one last chance to back out as she was sure he would have difficulty with this if not outright fail the test. Still, the chance that he'll surprise her was enticing.
"I'm not backing down without a fight. I'll figure it out." Midoriya turned her down as she only gave him a smile that sent all sorts of feeling through him as she leaned in close as if she was about to whisper a secret into his ear.
"I have a tattoo that I got in my 2nd year on a dare from Tiger, my parents have no idea I got it. The question is where on my body is it and what it is a tattoo of." She told him, giving him a juicy bit of info about her, and gave him his task.
"A-A-a ta-too?" At the mention of something so…intimate in his opinion, his mind immediately flushed her to her nude form and how he tried to imagine a tattoo something on that perfect body, his reaction being what she both expected and wanted out of him as she flashed him some bedroom eyes which got his blood pumping.
"Oh yes, I got some body-art done somewhere on my mortal flesh." Pixie-bob whispered to him before she stepped with a couple of extra steps as his mind seemed to be lost in some fantasy, not that she minded, she was sexy and did indeed know it!
'Wow, he is a teenager boy underneath all the awkwardness, I can almost see the hormones churning in him right now.' She thought to herself as she took further steps away from him. "No hints, and no asking anybody for help about it. You have to do this on your own, so let's get back to training!" She suddenly changed gears as she immediately started to spawn weak monsters for him to have to work on while she molded the larger, more powerful ones. This knocked Midoriya right down to earth as he looked around himself to see he was being starred down on by around 5 of these such threats which had already started to move on him.
"Crap!"
Alright, that is the chapter! What did you all think? Did you have any suggestions or did you just want to talk? Either of those two can be left for me in reviews to the chapter or you can PM me if you think I won't see yours among all the others. This chapter, like any of my others ones for other works, was written over several days but that last 3k words came to be in a single sitting as while I had a clear roadmap, IDK I just felt…energized as I penned those last parts of the chapter.
When it comes to his friends, I'm keeping them involved but not too much as this is first and foremost, a Ryuko and Midoriya thing. Iida for this story is of course a little more socially aware as he's the boy's only guy friend that he can reasonably rely on to give him good advice, even if it is true that if he knew who Midoriya was pinning for, he would shoot it down without mercy, the guy likes his rules and societal norms, what can I say. Shoto is the oblivious friend, think similar to maybe Starfire in the OG Teen Titans show or Sheldon from Big Bang but without the foreign cultural clash making things odd of the former or annoyance of the latter. Asui, she's the most observant friend in the group and the one that calls shit out when she sees it, no matter what. I had(have) that kind of friend and while it is annoying when they do it to me, it's funny as hell when he does it to others.
With the teachers, I gave you a little look into how Aizawa sees things and his reasoning for the things he does and while I think he would be a drill sergeant of a teacher(because he is), it's clear it's because he cares and only wants the best for his students, so he does earn that nickname 'Dadawa' in my book. Honestly, I was sad that in the Christmas episode they did, Eri didn't somehow convince him to dress for the occasion as it would have been a cute overload if Eri-Claus had her faithful elf or reindeer.
Also, I tried to give more screen time to Pixie-bob to get her view of things and help flush out why the title was picked as while he's the one with the major crush forming, she's the one leading this dance, I hope that was conveyed enough since I've seen more than a couple of stories both in this fandom and others where one party in the pairing isn't represented like we don't get their side of things and while this can be done well, such as how in the first parts of the Last Airbender, we see Aang's feelings Katara with little from her to show how he was pinning for her long before he even registered on her romantic partner meter.
Now, the reviews!
Projekt Darkside: Thank you, but you would have to thank lexboss for both the story and the pairing as she was the one that requested I even work on this. With the grammar and spelling, I do put each chapter through Grammarly so maybe I'll just try and find a second pair of eyes to proofread this.
n0ru: Thanks.
Our hero: Thank you.
Edinamabasi: Glad you think that and I hope that this chapter was up to snuff.
crazybeebee: Once more, thank the fanfiction user by the name of lexboss, this was her request as I never thought about such a story or pairing. Also, which stories are you referring to as I've only been able to find ones where he's with all of the cats except for Tiger or just Mandalay.
Ailurus: Oh, I intend to even if this is not going to be a long story, I intend to see it to the end.
draculyn28: Hello, and thank you.
Guest: As I said in the last chapter, this story is going to be written like a rom-com anime such as Kaguya-sama: Love is war with the craziness at times just not as long since both parties aren't hiding their interest ecchi elements in it.
Didd23: That…would be telling.
Mystic: Thanks, hope this chapter didn't disappoint.
