It was around 5 pm when the pink-haired girl's voice called out to Felt, Emilia, and Subaru.
"Emilia-sama, Felt, Barusu. We're here, please wake up," she said as she looked at the trio slowly awakening from their sleep.
"Mhm, just a little longer… Ram," Emilia whispered, still a little sleepy.
"Oh? Are we here already?" Subaru asked with a smile, but once he remembered how the maid called him, his smile disappeared. "Oi, why did you turn my name into a blinding curse?"
Ram simply looked at him with a smug. "Hah. Help those two get up, I'll inform Roswaal-sama of our arrival and two new guests, Barusu." She repeated the nickname she gave him, sticking it in his face.
"Argh," Subaru groaned. "Sleeping in a sitting position in a hard, wooden carriage while a cute girl is next to me was… weird," he said to himself, the mentioned half-elf must've heard him because she jumped up from her seat, full of energy
"C-Cute?" she asked.
Subaru nodded with a grin. "Yep, you're a cute girl, Emilia-tan!" he repeated himself, making the girl blush even more.
"But anyway, we don't want to let Ram and that Roswaal waiting, so why don't you guide us?" he asked as he looked at the blonde-haired girl still half-asleep. "Right, Felt?"
As she heard her name being called out, the blond-haired girl fell down from the chair she sat on. "Ugh," she groaned as she patted her butt to ease the pain, "big bro, don't do that please," she said as she looked at Subaru's smiling face.
"Sorry, but we better get going. Emilia-tan, show us the way, please," he concluded as he faced the silver-haired girl.
"A-Ah, yes." They left the carriage, the earth dragon already in a stable, enjoying its food and water.
Standing in front of the mansion, Emilia wore a confident look as she gazed at Subaru. "Well, what do you think?" she asked.
"It's huuuuge!" Felt said as she looked above, her neck hurting from how far she stretched to see the mansion in its entirety.
"I've never seen something so big in my entire life," Subaru commented as he looked around himself. It wasn't just the mansion, the garden, fountains… everything was big.
"Mhm, I'm glad you like it. Well then, Ram must be waiting for us, let's get going!" Emilia said as she opened the door.
"Yeah!" Both Subaru and Felt said in unison, excited as a brand new chapter began in their lives.
As the door opened, Subaru was once again speechless at the huge hall. A huge, spiraling staircase leading to the upper floor, but what surprised him the most was a man dressed in peculiar clothes with clown makeup standing in front of them, Ram next to him with another blue-haired maid looking exactly like Ram.
"Weeeeelcome. My name is Roswaal L Mathers, the owner of this maaaaansion," the man said with a weird tone.
It was the blue-haired girl's turn to introduce herself. "My name is Rem, a maid in service for Roswaal-sama. It's a pleasure to meet you, dear guests," she said. It truly must've been a pleasure to meet Subaru as he noticed the girl's cheeks had a slightly pink shade to them when she looked at him.
But what caught Subaru the most was that this man with… interesting hobbies was actually the mansion's owner. He didn't question it further as he was given a second chance in life, and this time, he won't waste it as a shut-in.
"I presuuuume that this young girl and boy are our neeeeew guests, Ram?" he asked as he turned to look at the maid, his smile still painted on his face.
"Yes Roswaal-sama, the boy is called Barusu, and the girl is Felt," she explained.
"Hmm, I seeeee. Barusu-kun, Felt, it is nice to haaaave you. From now on, you'll be living here as respected guests so be at ease," he said with a smile.
Subaru's brow twitched as he heard the pink-haired maid giving out the wrong name. "No, no. I'm sorry, but my name isn't Barusu, that's just Ram joking around. My name is Natsuki Subaru!" The black-haired boy corrected Roswaal as he pointed at himself, then he raised his hand.
"Ah, I truly apologiiiiiize, Subaru-kun." He took his hand in his own, shaking it with a smile. Next to them, Felt didn't like this clown, but since she was going to live with her big bro and big sis from now on, she didn't mind too much.
"Roswaal-sama, there's also something I need to say before we move on," Ram said with a serious tone.
"Yeeees? What might thaaat be?" the clown asked.
"You see, Felt-sama is the fifth royal candidate." As she said this, Roswaal's eyes widened, but Ram continued even through her surprised master. "It would've been The Sword Saint Reinhard-sama to take her, but she insisted on going with us," she finished.
"I seeeee. Well then, Felt-sama, I hope you'll enjoy living here. For now, Rem, why don't you show our guests to their rooooooms? We'll talk about all this candidacy stuff during dinner," he decided as he turned around to face the staircase. "I still have some business to take caaaare of, so please enjoy yourselves, dear guests," he finished as he quickly left.
"Well that was interesting," Subaru remarked as he looked at the man's retreating back.
"You tell me, big bro… you tell me," Felt joined him in his shenanigans.
They were brought out of their trance by the blue-haired maid.
"Come with me, dear guests. I'll show you to your rooms," she stated with a bow.
For some reason, Subaru couldn't keep his eyes off the maid. She looked like Ram except for the different hair color, yet she was so much different from her counterpart.
As they walked up the stairs, these were the thoughts running through Subaru's head. He finally had enough of the silence and so he broke it. "Listen, Rem. What exactly is your relationship with Ram? Are you like sisters or something?" he inquired as he continued following behind her.
"Indeed, Ram is Rem's older sister, dear guest," she answered nonchalantly. Subaru found Rem so much better than her sister, was it because she was younger? Her sister ran her mouth too much anyway. As soon as they met, she ignored Subaru, looking at him like a pitiful being which made him kinda sad.
"We are here." After minutes of walking, they finally arrived at a door. Seriously, this mansion is too huge and too empty. Normally you'd expect a mansion of this size to have a lot of guests and maids, but they never ran into someone the entire way here.
Once Rem opened the door, the trio was welcomed by a fresh scent of the blankets.
"Whoa." Felt was speechless as she gazed at the room.
"This is… This is like half of the entire loot house! It's so big!" she beamed with happiness as she quickly entered the room.
"This will be your living quarters, Felt-sama. You are a royal candidate, so a big room is a must," she explained.
Subaru was glad for the girl, she deserved it after what she's been through. When looking at her cute face, he could swear he saw a tiny tear forming in her eye, but the stubborn little girl would never admit to crying.
"T-Thank you! This is all that I ever wanted!" She returned to the maid, hugging her with all her strength. Rem was confused for a second, but her lips curved into a smile after seeing the girl happy. She gladly put her hands around the girl, returning the hug.
"It's alright. Enjoy yourself, Felt-sama. I'm going to show the other dear guest his room. If you're hungry, please wait for a bit as dinner will be ready in an hour. My sister is tending to it," she replied to the girl, now turning around to face the black-haired boy.
"Come, dear guest," Rem left the room with Subaru, letting Felt enjoy herself for the time being.
"You know, you don't need to call me 'dear guest' all the time, Rem," Subaru stated as he walked beside the girl.
Rem looked at his eyes before replying. "Well, what would you like me to call you?" she asked.
Subaru chuckled before answering. "Let's start with my name… I'm Natsuki Subaru! It's nice to meet you, Rem," he held out his hand with a smile. The blue-haired maid looked at him for a moment before also smiling and shaking his hand.
"Alright then, Subaru-kun. We're here." She opened the door. Subaru was surprised even more than before.
"Rem, this… this is even bigger than Felt's room," he said as he looked into all the corners.
"Yes, Subaru-kun. This is a room fit for you, I'd say," she smiled at the happy boy. She thought he looked like a puppy.
"This bed… It's queen-sized!" he squealed. "Seriously, Rem. Can I really live here?" he asked, still processing the impossible.
The maid simply nodded. "Yes, Subaru-kun. I hope you'll enjoy your big room. The bed was also accommodated just for you and all your future 'actions'," she blushed as she said that.
"Actions?" Subaru repeated while the maid nodded.
"You mean like sleeping and… what else can you really do on a bed?" he asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Oh, I apologize, Rem spoke out of her way." She once again bowed. "If you like the room, then I'll take my leave, I still have some things to do with sister, like preparing the garden and lunch," she quickly said all those things before awkwardly leaving.
Huh… An interesting girl that Rem. Really nothing like her sister. Subaru thought.
Stretching his hands, Subaru fell onto the bed. "Now then, what's there to do?" he whispered. "I guess I'll look around the mansion to get to know it better," Subaru said to himself. "I think Rem said that dinner will be ready in an hour?" he asked no one in particular.
Rem was slowly walking away from the boy's room, a smile painted on her visage.
"What else can you really do on a bed except sleeping?" she repeated the boy's words. "I'll show you later, Subaru-kun," she whispered with a lewd look as she put her hand on her chest, her heart skipping a beat once in a while.
Subaru walked around the mansion for a few minutes. There were a lot of unused rooms, just letting dust fall on them
"I guess those are rooms for guests?" Subaru asked himself. "They're a lot smaller than mine though… I still don't get why Felt, a literal royalty, got a smaller room than me," he mumbled. "But I guess she's happy anyway. I'm gonna have to go talk with her later,"
He stopped in front of a room with a different door than the others. He put his hand on the handle and slowly opened it. "Huh… Just the toilet? I thought I felt something coming from here" Subaru closed the door. As soon as he did that, the door had this weird aura to them, as if it was inviting Subaru in. "This is weird," he whispered. He wanted to open it, but why? He knows there's a toilet there…
His curiosity got the better of him and so he quickly pulled the handle, entering the room.
Before him was a library spanning hundreds of meters, bookshelves everywhere the eye could see. In the middle of the room, a sole blonde-haired girl sat on a chair, a book in black binding grasped in her hands.
"Hey. Could you please tell me where we are?" Subaru asked, his voice getting the girl's attention. "I thought this was the toilet?"
"N-No… This is Betty's multipurpose room. The Forbidden Library, I suppose," she replied.
"Ah, I see. Well then, Beako, let's get along, shall we?" he said with a grin. The girl perked up at the nickname she was given, but she let it pass as she felt something special coming from this boy.
"Hmph, I guess I have no choice, I suppose," she answered.
"By the way, what were you reading there?" he pointed at the book she put down on the table just a moment ago.
"This is Betty's gospel… Huh, why would I tell that to you, I wonder?" she asked herself.
"A gospel? Like those books in churches?" he inquired with a confused look. "I never would've thought that you'd be someone that likes reading religious books in free time," he chuckled.
"...No. This was a gift from mother, but it's been empty for the last few years," she answered with a sad tone, shutting the boy's playfulness right away.
"O-Oh… Sorry if I brought up a sad subject," he apologized as he came forward to the girl.
"It doesn't matter, in fact." She stood up from her chair, approaching Subaru.
"Stay still, I suppose," she said while holding out her hand, touching Subaru's stomach with it.
"It won't hurt, in fact. I'll be careful." As soon as she said that, Subaru felt weird, getting tired all of a sudden.
The feeling disappeared seconds after that.
"W-Woah… What was that?" Subaru inquired while trying to not fall. "I suddenly felt tired for a moment," he continued.
"I felt the mana inside you to confirm a thing, I suppose." Her butterfly-shaped eyes looked into Subaru's. He seriously wanted to hug the girl.
"And what did you confirm?" he questioned.
"After four hundred years… I finally found you, in fact." She smiled at the boy, a smile that affected Subaru's heart in numerous ways.
"Y-You waited for me for… four hundred years?" he repeated her words while the girl nodded.
"Betty can feel it, in fact. I feel attached to you as if I'd never want to lose you, I suppose. That must mean that you're that person!" she said with bright, determined eyes.
"I-I don't know…" Subaru stuttered out. He wasn't really sure what to say to the girl, but his chain of thoughts was interrupted by her voice.
"C-Could you hold Betty's hand?" she asked as she held it out.
"Sure." This was really the least he could do. But something unexpected happened.
As soon as he grabbed the girl's frail-looking hand, the room was painted in a green light, highlighting both of their hands.
What the. Subaru couldn't finish his thoughts as the light disappeared, leaving the room in silence for a minute.
Finally, the blonde-haired girl; her lips curved into a smile never seen before, looked into Subaru's eyes. She hugged him with all her might, which wasn't really much, but it still delivered the message she wanted to say.
"Thank you for finally coming for me. My contractor… my Subaru,"
A knock…
No one answered except for Subaru getting woken up.
"Ugh, what?" He groaned. He noticed he was sitting on the ground while the blonde-haired girl sat on his lap, soundly asleep.
I guess she must be having good dreams with that wide smile. Subaru thought as he looked at the cute way Beatrice slept, making him also smile.
Another knock resounded in the library.
"Coming, coming," Subaru repeated nonchalantly as he stood up from the surprisingly warm floor, carefully putting Beatrice into her seat without waking her up.
He approached the large door and opened it. He was surprised to see the pink-haired maid standing in front of him.
"Oh, what do you need, Ram?" he asked with a yawn as he looked at her visage.
"Barusu, dinner will be ready in ten minutes. Don't be late as Roswaal-sama will discuss your pathetic future living here," she explained. Ram looked behind him and was surprised to see the blonde-haired girl sweetly sleeping.
"Is Beatrice-sama…"
"Yep, Beako is sleeping for now. She must've been really tired," Subaru answered before the maid could finish her sentence. "She said that apparently I'm that person, and I promise to do whatever to take care of her," he smiled warmly as he remembered her loving embrace when she called out his name for the first time - My contractor… my Subaru.
"Barusu, how did you find Beatrice-sama's library in the first place?" Ram inquired as she recalled the moments prior.
The pink-haired maid walked around the mansion trying to find a certain black-haired boy. First, she visited his room, she wanted to tease him for making her come all the way to him, but once she arrived outside his room and opened the door, she found it empty.
"Idiot Barusu… Dinner will be ready soon and he's nowhere to be found," she gritted her teeth. She'll make him pay for making her walk all this way.
She continued walking through the hallway for a few more minutes. Suddenly she felt a big surge of mana coming out of one of the rooms. She wanted to open it but after thinking about it, she decided to forget it and just knock.
"I mean, I was just walking around and suddenly this room which was previously a toilet is now this big library," he explained, just thinking about the awkward way he met Beatrice made him shiver.
"And? Beatrice-sama would never dare to fall asleep next to someone like this. Surely you must've done something with your perverted skills?" she asked.
"Ram! You know I'd never do something like that to a child!" he whispered with an angered tone, trying not to wake up the sleeping Beatrice behind them.
"Hah, I don't know you, but trying to seduce a maiden is something I can imagine being your forte," she smirked.
Subaru looked at Ram. "Anyway, you said dinner will be ready soon? I'll go wake Beako up. I'm sure she'll be hungry," Subaru turned around, but the pink-haired maid tugged on his shirt.
He turned around with a deep sigh. "What do you nee- ~mhm." His sentence was interrupted as the girl lunged at him, connecting his lips with hers.
He was surprised for a moment, but then he reciprocated her feelings by deepening the kiss. This surprised Ram as she wasn't actually expecting Subaru the virgin to do anything. The maid's beautiful lips soon left Subaru's.
"Disgusting," she spat.
"Hk." Subaru breathed out suddenly, not expecting the girl's harsh words.
"Seducing a young maiden out of nowhere… Your perverted instincts truly know no bounds,"
Subaru looked at her. "So I am the pervert?" he awkwardly chuckled, then he continued. "I don't think you're much of a maiden anyway. Jumping at me out of nowhere like that…" The look he got from the maid silenced him immediately. He hoped he wouldn't get killed because this girl was capable of doing that with just her eye-piercing gaze.
"Tsk. Anyway, as I said. Dinner is ready, so hurry up and get down to the dining room. I don't like letting Roswaal-sama wait," she said as she turned her back. She fixed her maid uniform before leaving the speechless Subaru behind.
"Uhh… I better wake up Beako and get going," he groaned.
After walking around the mansion for a few minutes, Subaru and Beatrice finally found the dining room.
"Look who decided to show up… Took you long enough, Barusu." The first to welcome him was the pink-haired maid that flirted with him moments prior.
Subaru scratched his head. "Sorry. I tried looking around the mansion before, but then I found Beako and didn't have enough time to look around more." Subaru contemplated what he did before. He should've followed Ram right away.
"Hah, as expected of a man such as yourself." She turned her back on him while continuing. "Sit down somewhere, the food is being served."
Subaru was lost for words. Earlier she tried to seduce him and now she insults him for dumb things? This girl was confusing.
Felt also walked into the dining room, noticing Subaru straight away.
"Yo, big bro! What do you think about the rooms?" she asked.
"They're awesome, Felt! Mine is even bigger than yours!" he blurted out laughing as he looked at her visage. When he saw her hurt expression, he stopped himself immediately.
"I-I'm sorry Felt. If you want, we can exchange the-."
The girl's voice interrupted Subaru.
"Big bro, I don't mind. I'm just joking with ya," she laughed at his pathetic display.
The pink-haired maid only now noticed Beatrice. "I'm glad you decided to join us today, Beatrice-sama,"
Felt also noticed the little girl, even smaller than she was. "Haha, who's this shrimp?" she asked.
"Tsk, who do you think you're calling a shrimp, I suppose?" she asked. Felt was about to answer her question with a smirk, but she stopped herself when Subaru shook his head.
After all of this loud talk, Roswaal also noticed Beatrice joining them, which left him pretty surprised.
"Beatriiiiice, what brings you here?" he asked, full of curiosity.
"Hmph, Betty came here to eat with her contractor, in fact," she replied which made the clown widen his eyes.
"You contracted… Subaru-kun?" he inquired as a smile appeared on his face.
"Betty feels attached to Subaru, in fact. She knows he's that person for a fact," she finished quickly. Roswaal figured she didn't want to talk about it, so he dropped the subject.
Subaru wanted to ask Ram one more question, but he noticed the silver-haired girl enthusiastically waving at him with a bright smile. "Here, Subaru! Please sit next to me!" she patted the seat next to her.
"S-Sure, Emilia-tan. I'd love to sit next to you," he approached her with a smile, his comment making the girl blush. None of the two noticed the pouting Beatrice.
He sat down on the chair, a plate full of food already prepared. "So, what are we having today, Chef Ram?" he asked teasingly.
"Today's dinner will be meat with tatoes and various sauces you can choose from," she said, turning to Subaru with a smug. "Unfortunately, we were only able to get leftovers for you," she finished with a "hah".
Subaru looked at the maid disappointingly, but when he looked back at his plate, it looked exactly the same as everyone's.
"Raaaam, Subaru-kun is a guest, please treat him as suuuuch," Roswaal's voice resounded in the room as he scolded the maid.
"I apologize, Roswaal-sama," she bowed before his master before coming to him so she could pour some wine into his glass.
"Thaaank you,"
"Don't worry, Subaru. Ram was just joking," Emilia calmed him down. "Here, open wi~de." She grabbed a piece of meat with her fork, blowing on it before carefully sticking it in Subaru's mouth.
She gazed at him chewing, waiting for him to swallow. "Well? How is it?" she asked with a bright smile.
"It's great. But it tastes even better when being fed by such an angel, Emilia-tan," Subaru showed her a thumbs-up as he looked at the silver-haired girl's mesmerizing face. He could swear he could stare at it for hours without getting bored.
"Ehehe, I'm glad," she laughed. "You know, I wouldn't mind feeding you every now and then, Subaru." Gazing at her beautiful visage, only one thought prevailed in Subaru's mind: This girl is seriously an angel.
"You two look like a pair of loooovers," Roswaal commented as he observed the two.
"L-L-Lovers?!" Emilia stuttered out with bright cheeks while Subaru ignored the clown.
"Aaaanyway, please eat before it gets cold. After that, we'll talk about our current situaaaation," he ignored the girl as he put the tasty meat into his mouth.
"Man, that was so good!" Felt cried out from the amazing food the maids prepared.
"I know, right? I haven't had something so good in a long time," Subaru agreed with her.
Roswaal looked between his new guests with a smile before talking.
"Noooow that we've eaten, let's talk about our two new guests," he said, his voice quieting down everyone around.
"Felt-sama is a royal candidate, which is surpriiiiising," he commented. "Fortunately, I have no problem with sponsoring both you and Emilia-sama at the same tiiiiiime," he smiled.
Then he turned towards the black-haired boy, "Subaru-kun saved Emilia-sama and managed to find her insignia, which is a greaaaat deed. That's why I'd be honored to have you reside here as a permanent gueeeest," he finished with a smile.
"Yes! Thank you, Roswaal. I hope I won't be a burden," he scratched his head.
"Oh no, please enjoy yourself as much as you want. This mansion is your home from now on after aaaaall,"
Felt's mouth suddenly opened wide, yawning. "Huh, looks like I got tired from all this," she said.
"No worries, thiiiis meeting is over. As I said, please do as you pleeeease. I also have an important day tomorrow so I need to go to bed earlier." He stood up from his chair, looking at Ram.
The pink-haired maid understood and so she helped her master.
"Gooood night, everyone." He briefly left with Ram in his tow.
Felt was about to leave, but Subaru stopped her.
"Felt." He called out her name, getting the attention of the girl.
"Huh? What do you need, big bro?" she inquired.
"You seem to be awfully calm about all this royal selection stuff. I mean, you have the chance of becoming the queen!" he said, trying to bring the girl's mood up.
Felt simply sighed as she looked into Subaru's eyes. "You're right big bro. It's awesome that this has happened to me, and I couldn't be happier," she said with a slightly sad tone.
"Then why?" Subaru questioned again, this time he got a quick reply from the girl.
"I simply don't care,"
"Huh?" Subaru tilted his head as he didn't understand her answer.
Felt noticed this and so she elaborated. "I don't care about this country. I lived in the slums since I was a small child, and none of the nobles ever cared about us. I don't think I even have a chance of becoming a ruler since the nobles wouldn't vote for a slum dweller," she finished, her eyes trembling.
The black-haired boy came towards Felt, hugging her gently. "It'll be alright Felt. If you don't want to, I'm sure no one will force you to attend to this royal stuff," he cooed.
The blonde-haired girl looked at him. "Thank you, big bro," she warmly smiled at him.
After a few seconds, they parted from their hug. "Now be a good girl and go to bed, princess. Children should get all the sleep they can get." He changed his tone to sound like an old man scolding his granddaughter, which was a success as Felt burst out laughing.
"Hahahaha, yeah, yeah. Good night, big bro."
Subaru looked at the girl's retreating back before breathing out loudly. "Felt is a good girl," he whispered.
From behind, a silver-haired girl walked up to him.
"I'll be going too, Subaru. I hope you have a stupendous night," she warmly smiled at him.
Subaru laughed. "Emilia-tan, no one uses the word "stupendous" anymore,"
Emilia looked at him with a pout. "Jeez, stop teasing me." But then she also chuckled a bit. "Good night, Subaru."
With that, the entire dining room was left to Subaru and Rem. Beatrice left earlier because she wanted to read in peace and she hated that the clown constantly looked at her with his weird smile.
"Rem, I'm also gonna go. I'm not sure if I'll fall asleep right away, but good night." He was about to leave, but his hand was grasped by the blue-haired girl.
"Wait, Subaru-kun. Let Rem accompany you, please," she said with a smile.
"Huh?" the boy was confused.
"I-I mean, you still don't know the mansion, right? Getting lost at night is dangerous. So please let Rem accompany you to your room," she pleaded with big, cute, dog eyes.
He deeply sighed. "Alright, alright." Rem perked up at his answer. "I guess you can come with me," he laughed.
"Here we are," Subaru said as he sat on his bed, stretching his hands. "Thanks again, Rem. I'm sure I'd get lost in this big mansion if it wasn't for you," he smiled at the blue-haired girl.
"I'm glad I could be of help, Subaru-kun," she replied, her cheeks bright red.
"Well then, I'm gonna get some sleep. Thanks for everything, Rem," Subaru finished as he laid on the bed.
Rem ignored his words, just standing still and looking at him with ragged breathing.
The black-haired boy noticed this. "Uhm, Rem? You okay?" he inquired as he looked at the girl's red face.
He stood up, approaching her which got the maid out of her trance. "A-Ah, yes. Sorry, Subaru-kun, I was just lost in my thoughts," she answered.
Subaru suddenly touched her forehead. "Hmm, you don't seem to have a fever." Her temperature was as usual, the only thing that came to Subaru's mind would be - "Rem, do you by any chance- ~mhm."
Out of nowhere, the blue-haired girl lunged at Subaru, connecting her lips with his. Subaru was left confused, but once he figured out what the girl wanted, he deepened the kiss while holding the girl's waist. She yelped out as she didn't think Subaru would do something, not that she disliked it. After a few seconds, Rem invaded his mouth with her tongue. It was awkwardly moving inside it, but after a while Subaru joined in with his own tongue, making them dance around each other in pure ecstasy.
Finally, Rem ended the kiss as a trail of saliva connected between their lips.
"R-Rem… That was-" Subaru couldn't finish his sentence as the maid put her finger on his lips, silencing him.
"Not now, Subaru-kun." Her cheeks were brighter than ever before. She pushed Subaru onto the bed, following him soon after.
