Warning: I'm an Anime only so most of the lore may be wrong or changed in this story(maybe ı would even forget lore given by anime too sometimes ıdk). So ı'm sorry for those.
And thanks for the amazing helps from my new beta reader "The_Appa_Man" His help improved the writing in this a lot. All the differences in the writing style and fixes is his work.
Also this is a rewrite from the original part 1. I will continue rewriting the fanfic until the end of arc 1(part 4) to get a more consistent writing through chapters.
Prologue(Part 1):
It was a sunny day in Lugnica. The bright sun rays of the morning shone over a boy's scary yet relaxed eyes, slowly waking him open them. The boy stood, wishing the sun.
"GOOD MORNING!", The boy screamed, scaring a small girl near him.
"Announce your excitement a bit slower, I suppose", said the small girl.
"Come on Beako, today is the day!", The boy said.
He was so excited for this day. After a really long time he and his beloved angel will be alone together for sometime and have fun. His name was Subaru and he and his beloved Emilia were going on a date.
"You two don't even know what type of relationship you are in, in fact", Betty said, mocking Subaru.
"What do you mean Beako?", Subaru asked while sweating.
"Well, You two don't call yourselves in any closer terms than being friends, I suppose. And as much as you want to be more, Emilia's priorities make you a second thought for her, I suppose", the spirit said, pulling harsh words on Subaru.
Hearing those words put a spine into Subaru's happy morning.
Betty, realizing she hurt Subaru, got close to him.
"I didn't mean to hurt you, I suppose", Betty said, her face taking on an innocent look while she held Subaru's hand.
"I just hope you two would be able to finally open up to each other. And I will always be here for help, in fact!", Betty said proudly.
Subaru's happiness returned after Betty's encouraging words.
"For help? You are so cute but I'm sure I can handle it", Subaru said while patting Betty like a child.
"That handling will take decades, I suppose", Betty said while pouting
"He-Hey!", Subaru was taken off guard with Betty's last mock.
"Maybe Emilia would understand better than you if I talk to her, in fact", Betty said, teasing Subaru.
"Hey don't talk to Emilia-tan about that!", Subaru said, trying to stop Betty.
"Coward", Betty said, disappointed in Subaru.
The same sunrise arrived in a different yet a more messy room. While normally this room was very tidy in most times with few months of hard work created a mess of papers, books and all kinds of royal homeworks all over the place but one of the more tidy parts of the room, in the bed, there was an angel who was also waking up from the sunrise.
Her silver hair was shining from the sun rays and making the room even brighter while her beautiful amethyst eyes opened slowly with excitement that is as big as Subaru's.
She slowly woke up from the bed with a happy smile but her smile became a bit regressed upon looking at a blue crystal she was carrying all the time.
"Good morning Puck", Emilia said with no reply coming.
Even if she didn't hear anything she still felt his presence. With the events that happened in sanctuary a few months ago, Emilia lost contact with her father figure Puck. While she lost her contact physically Puck was still with her. He was waiting in that blue crystal for one day to return. Emilia was hoping that day would happen in the near future. Especially to show how much she has changed after the event.
Like a bird that depends on its parents, Emilia depended on Puck once, whether fighting, studying, even tying her hair. For Puck, looking after her was just a pleasure, but with the sanctuary events the bird finally had to fly on her own. And with a little encouragement from her closest friend and now her one and only knight Natsuki Subaru, she was able to fly higher than she ever did.
"Wait, we will have a date today!", Emilia said while her excitement returned.
After the events in sanctuary and Subaru's knight ceremony Emilia had to work a lot. A lot, that she had little to no free time on her own. That little to no time made Subaru and her interactions very few and small. So she was craving for more time. No, both were craving for more time.
Even though they were still not sure about it, their connection to each other was very strong. They trusted each other more than anyone. At least that was what Emilia was thinking mostly of Subaru. He was the only other person with whom she could really be who she was. But she always had doubts as well. As much as she wanted to believe it, a person like Subaru was like a dream to her. But she still felt like she wasn't worthy of him. How could she after all the times he saved her near death and pushed himself for her happiness? And of course as much as she was able to be who she was in front of Subaru she never was sure if Subaru was the same. So many sudden smiles and weird antics, holding his emotions for the sake of it just so she could not respond to him. She was worried about Subaru all the time but she wasn't able to do anything about it. It's like Subaru was an unbreakable wall, never letting his true self to be found. Except for one person.
"I have to stay with her before our date with Emilia-tan", Subaru said.
"I understand Subaru. Just know that if you need me I will be here, I suppose", Betty said with a relaxing smile.
"Thanks, Beako", Subaru said while opening the door for a room.
That room was a room he always entered, containing only one more person other than him.
A Sleeping beauty one can say. The only person who Subaru was comfortable to open up to. Her blue hair was still not messy after all those months, taken care of by Subaru and Ram. Only those two were entering the room. One was there because there was no one else to remember her and the other one was desperate to remember her.
"Hi Rem", Subaru said while holding her hand.
"Today, I finally will have time with Emilia-tan. Don't worry, I won't do something stupid and I will be happy…", Subaru said. Taking a long breath he continued.
While he said that a person nearby started to hear him.
"I wish you could help me with it. Giving me weird clothes for it, giving me tactics, to be honest that would be better than mine, haha… And you know just have fun with you…", Subaru said while trying to not break down.
"I just wish the world was fair and you were with me too. Laughing with me… But I will find a way… I swear...", Subaru said and kissed her forehead.
While his heart always wanted Emilia, Rem was as important to him. She was like Emilia, a shining light in his darkest moments. When he screwed up the most in the past she was able to bring him up and remind him who he was. Who he should have been. He was grateful to her. And wanted to save her from the curse she had been given one day.
"I miss you."
"Subaru...", Emilia said, hearing all of it made her feel guilty.
After everything Subaru did for her, she wasn't even able to make him comfortably talk to her about his feelings. She wasn't even able to make him happier with his life and feel his pain with him. This side of him was for some reason closed for her.
After being done with his talk, Subaru started to go back. Emilia started to hear footsteps so she quickly left.
"Alright. I'm ready!", Subaru said, making an energetic entrance into the corridor.
"Stop doing weird poses here Barusu", a pink haired Oni said.
"Were you there?", Subaru said, jumping away from her.
Ram silently went to the room herself. Subaru didn't continue talking when seeing where Ram went.
After that Subaru quickly found Emilia.
"Hi Emilia-tan!", Subaru said with an excited voice.
Emilia stopped for a second to collect her thoughts. As much as Subaru was not talking to her about himself and maybe even doesn't love her, she will still try her best to make Subaru smile. She will always be by his side. With this quick thinking she turned around with a smile.
"Hey Subaru!"
"Ah! Wha-What's this? This pure, silver, beautiful light!", Subaru said with extreme energy.
Emilia giggled. At this point she knew how Subaru liked to act with her.
"I don't know, maybe it was coming from a brave and strong White Knight. Hehe…", Emilia said with a childish tone.
"No no I'm sure it's coming from the most beautiful girl in the universe!", Subaru said.
"Universe? Subaru you doofus! That's impossible!", Emilia said, in the end she still had times where she didn't understand Subaru.
"You and your odd ways of saying old words Emilia-tan", Subaru said, after a long time knowing they had a whole day was refreshing.
"So Emilia-tan, where should we go today?", Subaru asked.
"Um… You decide.", Emilia said, wanting to make what Subaru wanted the whole day.
"Well… Um, I don't know anywhere is fine for me actually…", Subaru said, not sure of what he wanted.
"Um… Then… What about going to the city and having fun?", Emilia said, scared of the response to that answer.
"City…?"
"Oh i-if you want, we can go with others too. Like Garfiel or Otto.", Emilia said.
"No no. Just together would be amazing. Am I right?", Subaru asked.
"Ye-Yeah. Like you said, a date!", Emilia said tried to go along with Subaru's thoughts
After this talk Subaru and Emilia went to a carriage. Of course they were going with Subaru's one and only Patrasche.
"Oh wait, I forgot my cloak!", Emilia said, quickly wanting to get it.
"Emilia-tan wait!", Subaru said, stopping Emilia.
"Huh? What happened, Subaru?", Emilia asked, confused about his behaviour.
"What about going there without it?"
"Without my cloak?", Emilia said while lost in thoughts.
"Wouldn't it be better if I wear it? Especially since people-" Emilia's talk was cut from Subaru.
"Emilia-tan you don't need to rely on that thing all the time. And hey, you are a candidate to be a ruler here. They wouldn't do anything.", Subaru said.
"And if they try to hurt you, I will protect you", Subaru said, looking shinier and shinier in Emilia's eyes.
Subaru didn't want her to feel like she had to hide herself from people. Seeing that always made him frustrated. Seeing a person who would do anything for helping people and a person who even in his worst times being the only one who continued being nice to him, tried to hide herself from others because how she looks felt so unfair for him.
Seeing Subaru's determination Emilia accepted Subaru's offer. She held his hand.
"Then let's go", Emilia said with a comfortable smile.
And with that Subaru and Emilia went on their little date in the city of Lugnica. Thankfully like Subaru hoped no one tried to hurt Emilia. No one seemed to care for her. The ones who did were quickly leaving the place.
Together Emilia and Subaru had a lot of fun:
-They ate ice cream.
"Oops… I'm eating it too fast…", Subaru said while his head hurt from the cold.
"Let me look at that!", Emilia said, quickly looking at his head.
"You should be more careful Subaru", Emilia said.
"Emilia-tan why are you looking at my head?", Subaru said, confused about Emilia's behaviour.
"You hurt your head right? Maybe I should use healing magic…"
"Emilia-tan it's just a brain freeze.", Subaru said.
"Br-Brain freeze? How did it freeze? Di-Did I use my powers accidently!", Emilia said, now even more worried.
"No no it's not something like that! Don't you know what a brain freeze is?", Subaru asked.
Emilia stood silent with this question. While she was silent Subaru looked at her hand.
"Emilia-tan? Where is your ice cream?"
"I ate it", Emilia said.
"We just bought it a minute ago, when did you even finish it?" Subaru was confused.
And then Subaru realized why she didn't know what brain freeze is.
-They went to The appa guy and got some appa's.
"Ah, it's you again", The appa guy said with a friendly look.
"I see you've brought your queen with you", Appa guy said and then kneeled before her.
"Ah… Um… You don't have to do something like that sir", Emilia said. She didn't like people kneeling down on her.
"Oh I see. Sorry about that", The appa guy said.
After a small talk Subaru and Emilia bought some appas from the generous person and left the place.
After a few walks containing talks and giggles, they went to a small landmark with a bridge to relax. Eating appas while sitting on the sides of the bridge.
Even though for Emilia this place didn't mean that much to her, maybe because of the talk he had with Rem, Subaru felt nostalgic over this bridge. Remembering his oldest memories with Emilia.
The first time he learned that she was a half elf was there on this very calm bridge.
"Subaru are you alright.", Emilia looked at him.
"I… I am Emilia-tan", Subaru said.
He remembered her worried voice when telling him about it. Waiting for him to run away or show a sign of fear. But Subaru didn't even know what the significance of being a half elf was. For him she was just a cute and a nice girl at that time. He remembered her cute reaction. She was shocked to see him completely unfazed by her being a half elf, while Subaru just stood there not understanding her words. Then Emilia suddenly hiding her face and calling him a dunderhead while pouting.
That cute memory while looking at her now made him giggle a bit.
"Did something happen?", Emilia asked.
"Nothing, I just remembered something from the past", Subaru said while caressing her cheek. Live with the sorrow yet happiness of that forgotten memory.
Emilia held that gentle hand with a smile.
"You really are sometimes so hard to understand, dunderhead", She said calmly.
When they left the bridge Subaru felt a sting in his stomach and started to feel dizzy. But he still continued walking, not wanting to make Emilia worried.
"Today was really fun, don't you think Subaru… Subaru?", Emilia looked back at Subaru. But what she saw left her with fear.
She saw the tired look on Subaru's face; it's almost like his entire body was ready to crumble. His eyes started to bleed and he was trying to walk but every step felt more painful than the other. Emilia quickly held Subaru in her arms. Subaru looked at Emilia but suddenly he started to see so many ghostly(unseen) hands around him. All of them were coming from him.
He was scared. Something was happening and he didn't know if it was dangerous or not.
"Em-Emilia-tan please… put me somewhere….", Subaru said while pain started to get bigger and bigger.
Emilia quickly found a chair and put him there.
"Subaru! Are you okay? Please talk to me!", Emilia called Subaru but Subaru wasn't even able to say proper words anymore.
He was frustrated. He saw the fear and sadness in Emilia's eyes but couldn't do anything about it. Was it a curse again? Is there an enemy? He didn't know. The pain got even worse. One of the hands started to reach for his heart. He was scared. Was he gonna die again after all the good times he had with Emilia? Was it again bound to be only in his memories.
Suddenly a terrifying purple energy started to shine from Subaru. Subaru was screaming in pain. Everyone nearby was watching. Some were just running, some were stunned from fear, some thought it happened because of the witch who they thought was Emilia and some did not get what was happening.
Emilia was scared while looking at the dangerous sight in front of her. But then she started to hear the screams of Subaru and saw his crying eyes.
"Su-Subaru", Emilia said, in that fear seeing him in the middle of everything was like a road map she had been given.
With it she jumped to Subaru. At that moment her body moved on her own. Her emotions took control of her body just to save the person she loved the most.
"Hold on!", Emilia said right as she held something near Subaru.
First she thought it was Subaru's hand or maybe something else but what she grabbed was an unseen hand. Slowly she started to see what she held. Her entire vision was changed upon seeing the shadowy hand with a purple aura. This hands was all over the place and some of it started to come to her as well. She started to feel the pain Subaru felt as well.
"AH!"
Subaru saw her cries and pain and realized she was hurted by this as well.
"EMILIA RUN! PLEASE! DON'T HURT EMILIA PLEASE!" Subaru begged for the thing that is causing the pain. He couldn't handle Emilia dying again and he couldn't even control anything about it. Emilia can't leave the place and Subaru can't stop it.
Both Subaru and Emilia were confused, scared and in pain. Entire city center was hearing their screams while the entire city felt the witch's power. Blood was coming from Subaru and Emilia's mouths to their eyes. They weren't even able to see anything any more until…
Both became corpses on the ground.
Subaru's dead body was replaced by another one. Since he never experienced Return by Death for a few months he felt sick from it even more than any other time.
Subaru opened his eyes in frustration but then he saw Emilia. They were back to the bridge… Or at least that's what it looked like. Since he wanted to be seen happy with Emilia he tried to look fine.
He slowly turned to Emilia with a forced smile.
"Alright what my dear queen wants to do n-"
A sudden hug came from the half elf. A tight hug.
When both met their eyes, Subaru saw the fear in hers. She seemed like she had experienced something horrible. After seeing that he knew something was off. He kindly took her arms away and asked.
"Are you alright Emilia-tan?"
Emilia looked at his face.
"Do-Don't you remember? Wa-Was that just a nightmare? Ma-Maybe it was?", Emilia said, hoping what she saw was not the reality.
"Don't I remember what?", Subaru asked, and started to get worried about Emilia's behavior.
"Yo-You were sick then th-those hands appeared all ov-over your body and th-then we…", Emilia stopped in the last sentence. She wasn't able to handle the situation.
"We… died", Emilia said with horror in her face.
Hearing that last sentence opened Subaru's eyes.
Emilia remembered.
"Wh-What did you say?", Subaru said.
"I… It was probably a stupid nightmare I had Subaru. Sorry to worry you", Emilia said, scared a bit by Subaru's tone.
"You… You remembered", Subaru said, confused about the feelings of happiness and fear.
"I… remembered?", Emilia was confused about what he meant.
But then she realized what he meant. She started to get scared by it.
"Wa-Was that all real?", Emilia was terrified.
Before Subaru was able to talk to Emilia suddenly the two heard screams.
"Th-The Witch!"
"Someone bring help!"
Sudden screams of the people of Lugnica baffled the two. What happened? Entire day no one seemed to care about Emilia being here. Did something happen when Subaru used Return by Death?
Emilia's words stuck in her mouth, weren't able to set free by this sudden hate came towards her.
Subaru held her hand. And ran away from the place. Since the appa guy was close he ran to him to ask about what's going on. He was the only other person right now who he knew could help them.
When both arrived they saw a young man. He was extremely skinny with long green hair without any beard to speak of. And he was looking at a girl.
"Does he have two kids?", Subaru said, confused about the fact that this random person was looking after the appa store.
"Su-Subaru… What's going on?", Emilia finally was able to talk. She hugged Subaru's arm, scared by her surroundings.
"Don't worry Emilia-tan I will figure it out", Subaru said, trying to sound like everything is in control but he was scared and confused as well.
Why was she remembering everything? Did they not die? Was it something else? These questions were in Subaru's mind never leaving him.
When they started to get near the young person they heard his thoughts.
"Ah… Rakasha...", He said, didn't realizing his thoughts were coming out of his mouth while looking at a woman. His eyes were blinded by the love he felt from looking at the woman. He was hoping to talk to her as fast as possible. Finally making the first move for his future.
"Hey.", Subaru said in a friendly manner.
"AAAA-", Person fell to the ground.
Emilia who has been covering beneath Subaru looked at the guy with a half her face. She was scared to look at anyone after all the screams.
"Are you alright?", Emilia said.
"Sorry I didn't realize there were customers.",The person, stood up felt embarrassed to be seen like this in front of customers.
"I'm guessing you are the kid of the owner of this shop. I never knew he had multiple kids.", Subaru said, assuming that he was just a pupil.
"Huh… What are you talking about? I am the owner of this shop.", The person said.
"Say what now?", Subaru said, confused about the situation.
"I have never seen you two here before. Are you two trying to scam me by using my father!", The person started to get angry. He still didn't realize what Emilia looked like while getting angry.
"NO NO NO W-We probably confused you with someone else. What was his name? Oh yeah, he told me once. Kodomon Risch.", Subaru said, he almost forgot his name after not using it at all.
"I am him,'' the person said.
"EHHHH!", Both Emilia and Subaru were shocked by his answer.
"B-But you?"
"What is going on?", Both Subaru and Emilia said.
Yes this young man was the person who both always took their appa's from. But he neither resembled his old self that they knew and he doesn't remember them at all.
And the problem was not just only that.
"Wa-Wait… Silver hair… and… Y-You… Get away from me!", Appa guy's face slowly started to look terrified while looking at the silver haired half elf.
"Gu-GUARDS HELP!", Appa guy screamed.
"I… I'm not her…. I…", Emilia got even more stressed over what was going on.
Subaru realized that quickly left the area and tried to find their carriage to get out of here. He wanted to make Emilia happy with her not using that cloak but the plan failed.
But soon enough multiple knights found them. All of them seemed scared by this sight of her.
"Leave this boy's soul witch! We will not let you go away!", Knights were talking about Subaru.
Realizing that Subaru quickly hid Emilia in his back. She was completely scared by this entire event.
"What the hell are you even talking about? I'm the knight of this royal candidate, Natsuki Subaru. What you have done here is just disgusting", Subaru said, looking angry at soldiers with his scary eyes.
"Candidate? What are you talking about?", A knight said.
"Huh?", Both Subaru and Emilia were confused about their reaction.
"She is trying to trick us by using her puppet. We should kill her right now!", Another Knight said and drew his sword.
"Wa-Wait!", Subaru wasn't fast enough to stop them.
Knights started attacking Emilia. Emilia was trying to go all defensive. She created a Wall of ice around Subaru and her but the Knights quickly destroyed it.
Then a Knight swung his sword to Emilia but Subaru blocked him. Subaru took the knight's sword but they were cornered.
They tried to fight as much as possible without hurting anyone but they weren't able to find an escape.
And then a Knight cut Subaru's hand that was holding the sword. And that Knight was going for a killing shot but then Emilia jumped in front of Subaru. The sword pierced Emilia's chest. And blood spread through Subaru's body.
"E-EMILIA!", Subaru screamed in terror. But then
"E-EE-M-E-MI-L-I", His mouth was covered in blood. Suddenly the same sword injury was in his chest as well.
The witch and her knight collapsed to the ground.
Both were dead.
Subaru's soul again returned to the same bridge with Emilia. Last death's impact affected him so much that he vomited in the small pool, bridge was built on top of. Since he remembered the scenario that happened before, he quickly took Emilia's hand. Even before she was able to speak or move.
"S-Su…", Emilia tried to talk but she felt terrible.
"Emilia-tan this is for your own good.", Subaru was taking her to the carriage right now, before someone attacked them again.
"Su-Su… Ah!"
With the sudden run and the experience she had she also vomited to the ground stopping Subaru.
Emilia stopped and looked at her.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Yes I saw those hands too but… We can talk about this later.", Subaru said He didn't want to repeat the same things with Emilia since they were in danger.
"W...We died… again…", Emilia said, Her fear increased more and more.
"Huh?", Subaru wasn't sure if he heard what he thought she said.
"A-Again?" Subaru said.
"Y-You don't remember… Bu-But! Am… Am I going crazy?", Emilia said while sitting on the ground ripping her hair while trying to not cry.
"Witch!"
"GUARDS HELP!"
Those words broke Emilia down. She was crying like she never did before. She didn't know what was going on and everything felt like hell.
Subaru looked at his area. He can't talk about Emilia right now. There was only one choice.
"Eh…", Emilia felt a relaxing warmth around her.
Subaru held Emilia and ran with her to the carriage.
"Su-Subaru…"
"Hold on. Please…", Subaru said. His behaviour around Emilia was changed after all things he heard.
Subaru was lost in thought. Was she remembering those deaths? Was she also experiencing them? Does she also now have…?
"Emilia-tan?", Subaru said. He was still serious. So serious that Emilia felt like she was in an unwanted territory.
"Y-Yes?", Emilia said, still trying to not cry in her situation.
Her beautiful hair was now a mess with cries made Subaru pissed off that this day ended like this.
"What… Do you remember before we… died?", Subaru said, still can't believe what might be going on.
"You… You were sick... and then all those… hands appeared… and… we died…", Even remembering those hurt her body.
Subaru looked at the road to find the carriage but couldn't find it. Maybe that was just it. Just a random way for the world to attack Natsuki Subaru again.
"And then… We… Went back to the bridge… And then… other people around us… were scared of me… And then… then guards killed us…", Emilia thought she was crazy. Did she become crazy?
When Emilia looked at Subaru again his expression was different. He seemed scared.
"Thi-This can't be the truth…", Subaru said.
"I… I am crazy… this must be the explanation… I… I'm just talking none sen-"
Subaru turned in to give a hug.
"Eh…", Emilia didn't expect Subaru to do that.
"Not you too… Not you too…", Subaru was trying to not cry.
"Su… baru?", Emilia didn't understand what was happening.
"Wasn't…. Wasn't I enough for this…?", Subaru was still talking words Emilia didn't get.
What was going on? Why was Subaru acting like this?
When they arrived at the place where the carriage should be, they didn't find it.
"You can't be serious. I-It has to be here!", Subaru said.
"Patrasche! Where are you?", Subaru called out but there was no answer.
Emilia was looking at him. Didn't know what to do, what to say.
"Subaru… What's… What's going on?", Emilia said. Not knowing what to do she hoped Subaru would know it. Even if there was a slim chance.
Subaru was scared to talk to Emilia but he could not avoid her too long. He relaxed himself and turned to Emilia.
"Don't worry Emilia-tan… I will find a wa-"
"Do you know what's going on?", Emilia was done with his fake answers.
"I…"
"You looked different when I answered your question! Are you hiding something?", Emilia continued. Putting Subaru into a corner.
"Emilia-tan I…", Subaru was still scared to talk about it. Even if he was ready for it ,and he wasn't, what if Emilia would die if he told her. Like the last time.
"Did you know we returned from de-", Emilia felt huge pain with Subaru when she started to word out her experience this time. Why did that happen?
The reason was the knights who were close to them. Their noise again alerted a lot of knights. When Subaru saw them he understood why that happened.
Return by Death does not allow anyone to know it's existence other than it's user. But that means.
Subaru held Emilia's hand.
"We have to leave this place now!", Subaru said and both ran away from the city by foot.
After the run, they had to sit under a tree.
Both were silent to each other. None of them had the courage to speak up.
Subaru looked at her face. She was so tired with everything that was going on. Her hair was messy… her eyes were dry with all that crying and her hands were shaking. She tried to hold herself with all that was going on.
"I guess… it's time to explain…", Subaru said while standing up.
"Explain...?", Emilia said.
Subaru looked at her. He knew he had to talk. He sat near her.
"About me…", Subaru said.
Emilia looked at him.
"What do you mean… Su-Subaru…?"
"I know what's happening… But it's a story you might not like…", Subaru said.
Emilia wasn't sure she was ready to hear him but there was no choice.
"Please… Tell me…", Emilia said.
Subaru closed his eyes and took a breath.

Emilia remembered that time and even without him explaining she started to understand.
"I… actually didn't meet you there… ", Subaru continued.
"Wh-What does that mean?", Emilia still wasn't able to accept what was clear now.
"Okay… I guess I need to start from the beginning…", Subaru said and held her hand unconsciously.
Emilia looked at his hand but he was looking at the sky.
"I-I'm not from this earth…"
"N-Not from this earth?"
"Don't worry I'm not an alien hehe…", Subaru said, trying to ease the situation a little bit.
"I was living my life as a normal 17 year old on my earth… But suddenly I closed my eyes and well… I was here. In Lugnica. That's why I didn't know the language here."
"Ho-How is this even…", Emilia was stumbling in her words not knowing what to say.
"Yeah… Well explaining this may confuse you or you may not even believe me…", Subaru said in a sad tone.
Emilia was shocked but it made too much sense. How he talks and how he does not get certain things in this world made her realize he may really be telling the truth.
"And when I was just trying to understand the situation I was in, three thugs appeared. Hehe, even Chin was there."
"Wha-What did you do?", Emilia said, sounding like a child who was really into the story.
"Well… I acted like how I usually am and they beat me up…", Subaru told this and then held her hand.
"And then you appeared", Subaru said this with a relaxation in his eyes finally fully able to tell her and thank her for everything she had done.
Emilia's eyes opened fully upon hearing him.
"And then you saved me."
"I… saved… you", Hearing this made Emilia feel weird. A sense of proudness yet confusion.
"Yeah. You were even looking for Felt for your insignia. But you choose to help me instead. Even if that would make things harder for you", Subaru said, sounding like a fanboy who is praising his hero.
"But… I don't remember.", Emilia said.
"Yeah… I know…", Subaru said with a sad tone in his voice.
Emilia looked at him. Instead of the Subaru she knew, she saw a different kind of Subaru. A tired Subaru. She put her hand on his cheek. Subaru held it. Held it tight and was so happy that she can listen to him now.
"Well… Then what happened was that assassin Elsa… We found Felt and your insignia but in the end she killed us…", Subaru said even remembering that moment was painful.
"S-She killed us…", Emilia said, learning things from the past she never knew and never experienced gave her an awful feeling. If it wasn't Subaru so many people could have died.
"And then I returned back a couple hours and saved you", Subaru said, not wanting to tell her how much he actually died.
"But why… Why didn't you tell me!", Emilia said, getting frustrated that Subaru never told her that.
"I...I tried… Remember when you tried to tell me…", Subaru said.
Emilia remembered the pain caused by those ghostly hands.
"Wh-What are those things… What is this power…?", Emilia asked.
Subaru was scared if hands would appear again but there was no choice any more.
"This… This power came from… Satella…", Subaru said, both scared by her reaction and the danger of the power.
"Sa-Satella…",Hearing her name put a spine in her throat… All this happened to Subaru was the reason why she was hated by everyone in the first place.
The Witch of Envy, Emilia's reason for her hated life and now the reason why Subaru is there like this in the first place.
Subaru after saying this looked around everywhere if something bad happened but there was nothing. He really can tell everything to Emilia. This made him both happy and angry at the same time. He was so happy that he could talk to someone, someone who always helped him in his darkest times now knew who he truly was but he can't even be happy about it. Because of him, someone he loves could suffer now too.
"Subaru are you okay?", Emilia said, after everything she heard she wanted to make sure Subaru was okay.
"I… I am. Let me continue... First I didn't know about her but then ı learned. When I die I uncontrollably return to a certain time.", with it Subaru explained to her his origin.
"And you were not able to tell this to anyone because…"
"Because power doesn't let me… yes…", Subaru told her.
Learning Satella gave this to Subaru made Emilia scared. Scared that people may be right about her. And she hated herself because someone she loved had to suffer because of her.
"Ho-How many?", Emilia asked.
"Huh?"
"How many times… yo-you died?", Emilia asked.
"…"
"Haha…. Nothing that big. Maybe one or two times haha…", Subaru said so Emilia wouldn't be worried.
Emilia knew Subaru was lying. She wanted to pressure him to say it but she looked at his face. It looked like he could break down any second and she didn't know how much she could handle it as well. She just stopped talking for a bit. She didn't question it any further.
After this they walked for two days. Two days to just arrive at the mansion. Emilia would've been worried about her duties but what's happening right now was much more important for her. In some places Subaru took a few snacks and water to keep them in good shape. But the limit of what he could buy was very small. Good thing was both were able to share it very well.
And after two days they finally arrived at the mansion.
"Do you think something happened here too?", Emilia asked.
"I don't know… Let's hope for the best", Subaru said and knocked on the door.
Both were ready for anything. They got in a defensive position and…
The door opened.
They didn't see who opened it until they looked down. They saw pink hair. The one who opened the door was a small girl.
"HUH!"
The small girl looked at them. One of her eyes was closed because of her pink hair. She was also wearing a maid outfit. She looked already annoyed by seeing their presence. With a cold behaviour she started to speak.
"Welcome to Lord Roswaal's Mansion. How can I help you?"
Both thought the same thing after seeing the small maid.
"What?"
