Also this is a rewrite from the original part 2. I will continue rewriting the fanfic until the end of arc 1(part 4) to get a more consistent writing through chapters.

Part 2: Demon

"Hmm…", the small girl looked at them.

Emilia and Subaru looked at the girl with confusion. They started to make circles around the quiet little girl; eyes focused on her.

"Is she…?", Subaru looked at her face very closely.

"Did she get smaller?", Emilia asked.

"I don't know… She looks like a baby…", Subaru said.

"Bu-But how…?", Emilia asked, worried about their situation.

"If you came for a job, sorry but we don't need more workers. You may leave now", the little girl said, sounding very bored. She didn't even listen to anything the two strangers said.

"Oh god…", Subaru had a sudden realization.

He quickly grabbed Emilia's hand and took her out of Ram's sight.

"Huh? Subaru, what's going on?", Emilia asked.

Subaru whispered in Emilia's ear.

"E-Emilia-tan… What if we… travelled to the past… Like… W-Way past…"

"Wh-What?"

"I mean look at what we saw until now…"

"Yo-You might be ri-right…", Emilia looked at the little girl again.

"We travelled through time!", Emilia, when she realized that unintentionally screamed at her situation.

"We don't treat mentally unstable people either", Little girl said.

The little girl started to get frustrated with these weird people.

"Wa-wait, Listen-", Subaru walked back to Little girl.

But the door closed on him and Emilia as soon as he started to talk.

"..."

Both stayed in front of the door speechless.

Seeing Ram; an angry, egoistic but weirdly friendly maid as a small pure kid like that was a weird experience for the both.

They both looked at each other while confused at what they had seen.

The two sat down nearby, waiting for the door to open.

Few minutes went like seconds. After an hour later the door opened with the pink haired oni coming out of it.

Subaru and Emilia quickly ran to her.

"Look, we walked for 2 days to come here please listen", Subaru said.

Small girl just looked at him with an annoyed look.

"You may not remember us but we are good people", Emilia said, backing up Subaru.

The girl started to walk away like there was no one around. But then Subaru's hand quickly grabbed her hand.

"Don't touch m-"

"Ram, listen!", Subaru said. His frustration made him blind to his words.

Hearing her name suddenly shocked Ram. Her eyes were opened to them.

"I-I know you probably don't remember us but… we are friends", Subaru, realizing his mistake, tried to patch it up with Emilia's words.

"Who are you?", Ram asked.

She suddenly looked at them thinking they might be one of her kind. She hoped that maybe after all the suffering, their clan was alive and well.

"Are you a demon?", Ram asked with her innocent eyes that were still hoping.

Subaru realized what it meant to Ram after seeing her so hopeful. He wanted to lie but he knew that it would be worse for the future. This was his first time seeing Ram like this. He didn't want to ruin her hope but he had to do it.

"I… I'm not…", Subaru said, looking at the ground because he couldn't even face Ram while saying it.

"A-Are you?", Ram directed the question to Emilia, still hoping for a chance.

"I… I'm not… either...", Emilia said. She couldn't look at her as well while crushing the small girl's hopes.

Ram quickly ran away from the duo.

Subaru wanted to talk but Emilia held his shoulder.

"Maybe we should wait", Emilia said.

"Yo-You are right…", Subaru said while Ram's quick leave left him feeling terrible.

After that Emilia and Subaru found a place to make a camp that was close to the mansion. Since two days of walking up to here, they have been only drinking water and eating what they can get with the money they had. So they were both exhausted and hungry.

"Emilia-tan, can you manage with water again? I will get some wood and try to go to the village after that to get some food", Subaru said.

"How much money is left?", Emilia asked.

"Well… It's not a lot. Probably today will be our last", Subaru said.

"I will take just for you today"

"You should just take it for yourself", Both said at the same time.

"..."

"Subaru I would be fine without it. You did a lot. You are more tired and hungry…", Emilia said.

"No! You used your mana to make ice for 2 days! You are in a bad shape too!", Subaru directly took control.

He hated to see Emilia like this. Her hair was all messy, her eyes were tired. While it isn't as much, she was still trembling from time to time and the worst part was the forced smile she made.

"Su-Subaru…", Emilia didn't know how to counter him after that.

"Fine then… I'm going", Subaru said but Emilia quickly held him.

"P-Please… don't just… don't just think about me this time…", Emilia said.

Subaru was also tired. Again with tired eyes, a weak body but still tried to look strong in front of Emilia. That also frustrated her.

Subaru left without saying anything. Just looked at her with a calmed eyes and a warm yet fake smile and slowly he put her hand down.

With the bag he had from appa's he bought, he collected some wood and then started to walk to the village while thinking about what happened in the last few days.

He felt angry at himself for her being in this situation. First he failed to save Rem and she turned into an empty shell and now Emilia… she had the power that cursed him for a long time. And it wasn't just that but all the victories he gained and all the suffering he endured returned back to being nothing. All those deaths have a chance to reappear again. And now Emilia had a chance to suffer them as well.

"Why…?", Subaru said while holding the bag tight.

"Why does nothing goes right for me… J-Just for once…? I… I wanted to tell her… b-but not like this… Not like this…", Subaru said, with no one around his strong look crumbled.

"No…", He stood up.

"I… I should not think about it right now… Since this happened I… I need to be strong… And protect her", Subaru continued walking.

"And hey… this means now I got only one chance for her. I need to use it very carefully… haha…", Subaru told himself with a small chuckle while trying to relax himself.

After that he finally went to the village with his last money.

"Hey kid are you alright?", A villager said, wanting to help him after seeing how tired he looked.

The old woman had orange hair with green eyes. Looking at her Subaru felt she looked similar to a small girl he also cared very deeply about. Remembering her also gave him a small happiness in this new world.

"Thanks but don't worry haha. I'm fine", Subaru said and walked to a nearby grocery.

After that he bought what he needed to buy with half of his last money and left the village.

Meanwhile Emilia started to use her ice to create more water. She was still thinking about what happened to Subaru. A different world? Return by Death? And all those memories they had that she never knew. What happened in those? And why Satella? Why the person, maybe even the monster that turned everyone against her, do that to Subaru?

She wanted answers to all of it but she felt alone in these thoughts. At that moment she wanted to speak to another person she trusted. Asking Subaru felt pointless and she didn't want to force him after all that had happened. But the only other person she could talk with was in the blue crystal that was her necklace. Waiting for her to awaken him.

Emilia touched the crystal so at least she can know that he was still with her.

But she felt nothing in the crystal…

"Pu-Puck…"

When Subaru walked back to Emilia's location, he started to hear screams coming from her. He quickly ran to her.

"Emilia!", Subaru screamed while running.

"No! No! Not again! N-No…", Emilia said.

"PUCK PLEASE SHOW ME A SIGN! PUCK PLEASE! TELL ME IT'S A JOKE! PLEASE! P-Please… please… puck…"

Subaru finally found her sitting on the ground holding her necklace. Again her face was in a bad shape. She had to feel the loss of her father once more.

"Su-Subaru… Puck… Pu-Puck…", Emilia couldn't hold herself and continued crying over her lost father.

Subaru ran to her and hugged her to calm her down.

"Why! Why is this happening! Why!", Emilia screamed with the warmth of her dearest friend, making her able to talk in this situation.

"Emilia… I… I'm sorry…", Subaru said and found nothing else to say.

"Pu-Puck…", Only thing Emilia could do was look at the necklace.

"So-Sorry… I'm sorry…", Subaru was even more frustrated with himself. He thought over and over again how he caused all of this.

Their small dinner was silent. Emilia looked at her necklace the entire time without eating what Subaru gave to her. She already thought she lost Puck before but this. This time it might be final. He wasn't with her. And Subaru… Does he know more about what is going on? Her loss made her question Subaru even more. She turned her head towards Subaru to finally get her answers. But she couldn't do it. She saw her friend's face. He looked lost in thoughts, in deep sadness and pain. She realized what he might be thinking. She felt guilty that she focused on herself and not him. It was obvious he felt the pain and frustration like her.

Knowing that, she walked over to her friend.

"Hey Subaru?", Emilia said.

"Yes, Emilia-tan?", Subaru gave a small smile.

Emilia held her food to him.

"Emilia-tan… Come on, I bought it for you. You need to eat… I'm fine"

"I'm not hungry… At least eat half of it.", Emilia said.

"Fine…", Subaru said and took half of the food.

After that Emilia sat next to him.

"I… I'm sorry…", Emilia said.

"Huh? There is no reason for you to be sor-"

"You think you caused this. Aren't you?", Emilia looked at Subaru's face.

"I wasn't-"

"Don't lie to me. I know you are thinking about that."

"I… Ye-Yes…", Subaru said.

"I… I felt betrayed by you when you said Satella… I thought you… You… were always lying to me… About your feelings… I thought ma-maybe you knew all of that is going on or… Maybe you fe…", Emilia stopped before finishing the sentence.

"But how you look… How you act… None of it seemed like you wanted any of this… I… I just can't believe that you are the reason for this", Emilia said, holding Subaru's hand.

"Emilia-tan, I never lied about how I feel about you. I would never lie about that… I… I don't know why I was chosen by her. And I don't know if I ever will."

"Then why are you thinking this was your fault?", Emilia asked.

"I-It's just…."

"Subaru, you always tried your best to protect everyone. You may not be ready to tell me everything you went through b-but… I know that you are a good person and I know that even with the curse you had, you never abandoned your friends. So I won't abandon you too", Emilia said while giving him a smile to reassure him.

"Emilia-tan…", Subaru looked at him, holding himself to not cry.

"I… I will find a way to go back home… And will make you reunite with puck", Subaru said.

"We will find a way", Emilia said while holding her necklace.

And both smiled at each other.

After all the pain they endured, both finally found a peaceful moment.

Emilia, finally after all these dark revelations, found hope again with Subaru.

And Subaru for the first time was happy that he was finally free to talk about his problems with Emilia.

Now there was only one problem left.

"Where are we gonna sleep?", Subaru asked.

"I… Well…?", Emilia wasn't sure either.

Past 2 days they weren't able to sleep. Either one slept and the other protected them or both continued walking. Since now they are near the mansion they may finally be able to sleep.

They tried to go back to the mansion but…

"Is anyone there?", Subaru knocked on the door.

There was no sound.

"Is no one there?", Emilia also knocked with no answer.

"Hey anyone?", Subaru still called someone.

"I guess we are gonna stay outside again…", Emilia said with a disappointed face.

"Yeah…", Subaru said again with a disappointed face.

They found a tree near the mansion.

"Well how about sleeping here?", Emilia said.

"I really don't want to make you sleep on the ground again but what are we gonna do?", Subaru said.

"Why? It's not that bad.", Emilia asked.

"It's like the worst place to sleep", Subaru said.

"Eh… You may be right. But it's not that bad", Emilia said, still supporting her thoughts.

"Well… At least let me get some leaves to make this a bit more bearable", Subaru said and took some of the leaves from the ground and turned them into a sleeping place for both of them.

Subaru quickly gave his jacket to Emilia.

"Subaru, wouldn't you get cold?", Emilia said.

"I would be fine, don't worry Emi-", Subaru's words cut short when Emilia gave his jacket back to him.

"You should wear this. I won't get cold", Emilia said.

"Bu-But…", Subaru couldn't say anything with Emilia's serious face.

"Fine…"

After that they went to sleep in a minute. They were very tired.

When Subaru opened his eyes he found himself in a dark void with a purple aura around it. He had no hands, no legs, no eyes. He was just there. But he was there before. He remembered it. He was able to think like he always was. And suddenly his body appeared in this shadow garden.

When he gained his body he started to breathe even though he didn't have to.

He felt his body even though it was not real.

He felt the ground even if there was none.

He was just floating in a space that seemed like it had a ground.

He was just feeling a body that was made of his own self thoughts of his look. Without injuries or feeling of any tiredness.

In this darkness he saw someone. Someone he wanted to talk to. Someone he felt so many different emotions at once.

Silver hair, pointy ears, amethyst eyes in black clothes. She was…

"Satella…", Subaru said.

He was hearing so many other things. Voices from people he doesn't know. Some he felt like he knew them and some he did not.

And he felt the presence of more than him and Satella. There were more people here.

Him, Satella and three more. He didn't know who they were. He wasn't even able to see them. He just knew they were here.

But when he looked at Satella something felt wrong. He felt nothing by seeing her.

Even though he knew who she is, even though he remembers the times where he saw her. She felt like a stranger.

Seeing her didn't make him feel connected to her nor made him feel the weird feelings of love he felt when he saw her. He felt nothing.

Satella slowly walked at him. She looked like each step she took was hurting her. But then she reached Subaru. With her hand she caressed Subaru's cheek.

"You don't remember me…", Satella said.

"Huh… Of course I remember you! What is happening? Why is Emilia… Why did she got Return by Death? What did you do?", Subaru wanted to question Satella but then she fell into Subaru's arms.

He quickly catched her.

"I… I'm sorry…", Satella said.

Subaru didn't understand what happened.

"Why are you saying this? Why are you doing thi-", Subaru wanted to yell at her but Satella suddenly continued caressing his cheek.

"You don't remember… Please… Remember… in the end", Satella said while the shadow garden slowly faded away.

"Satella…", He called out.

In that last moment, Subaru's feelings for her returned even if it was just a second.

And he saw her hand. It looked decayed.

At that moment he wanted to help her, protect her from what was going on. But then… He woke up.

He didn't understand what was going on but Satella looked tired and hurt. And his old feelings he felt for her felt like an old dream.

When he woke up Emilia also woke up with him. But right as they opened their eyes they saw Ram's face again but behind her there was a blue haired little girl.

"Sister sister, who are these people?", Blue haired girl said.

When he saw her he felt like he saw a ghost. His lost friend was in front of him. Not in danger, not sleeping.

"Re-Rem", Subaru said without realizing he said his thoughts loudly while focusing on his old friend.

Hearing Subaru Ram quickly hold Subaru on the chest. Making him hard to breathe.

"How do you know me and my sister?", Ram said with an angry look.

Not knowing what to say Subaru tried to explain where he came from.

"We.. um… come from… the f-", Subaru and Emilia felt a hand was holding their heart again. They weren't able to breathe for a second.

"Dammit… I can't say this too…", Subaru thought.

"Wha-What was that", Emilia said, feeling sick after the feeling of a hand holding her heart.

Ram also quickly grabbed Emilia.

"Stop goofing around! Who are you!?", Ram said. She was running out of patience.

"Sister I smell a witch scent.", Rem said while looking scared at the danger.

Hearing that made Ram furious against the two strangers. She was ready to kill them in anger.

"You… You BASTA-"

"NO WE ARE NOT FROM WITCH CULT! PLEASE LISTEN!", Subaru yelled in his last moments.

After that Ram stopped while the other two were heavily breathing from the experience of near death.

Emilia never saw Ram like that before. She looked furious.

"What do you want?", Ram tightened her grab against Subaru.

"Argh… W-We…", Subaru didn't know how to answer her.

"We just want to work here!", Emilia quickly said.

Subaru with hearing her, joined her as well.

"Yeah I mean your boss probably won't let you two do that many chores", Subaru said.

"And the bigger maid may need help", Emilia added her knowledge of Frederica as well.

"Ye-YEAH! And since we are poor we can help her and you two", Subaru said.

Ram looked at them in a very analytical way. Both were kinda scared how she looked at them. Like waiting for your results after an exam.

Ram didn't trust them at all. But she wanted one thing more than anything. She looked at her sister and took a deep breath.

"I will make you meet him. But that's it", Ram said.

"Y-Yes of course! Thank you!", Subaru said with a happy tone.

"Thank you!", Emilia said again in a happy tone.

"..."

An awkward silence arrived.

"Thank you?", Both Subaru and Emilia said.

Ram held her sister's hand.

"Come Rem. Let's go.", Ram said.

Both oni sisters started to leave.

"So we are coming, right?"

"Right?"
