Part 5: A New Life
Subaru and Emilia were shocked and confused. They had no idea what just happened.
Subaru didn't understand what she meant. Did she die? Why did she still say she will exist? Did he do something wrong? He wasn't sure.
Emilia on the other hand didn't understand anything. For the first time in her life she met the person everyone was comparing her to. She expected a monster. She expected Subaru to fear her. But what she saw was just a person. A scared person. She didn't know how to react to any of it.
"Su-Subaru…", she called out, still trying her best to comprehend the situation.
"Y-Yes?"
"What happened just now?"
"I… I don't know", Subaru replied honestly.
A door knocked after their small exchange.
Regaining his composure and clearing his throat, Subaru called out ,"Come in."
Ram and Rem walked into the room.
"Mieria! Barusu! It's time to work."
"Of course Boss!", he shouted, shifting his focus from what had happened.
Subaru sensed a weird happiness coming from Ram after hearing the word "Boss".
"I guess she didn't change that much", he thought to himself.
Ram and Rem took Emilia and Subaru to get their new "job" outfits.
"I have been waiting to see this for my entire life!", Subaru exclaimed.
"Huh? What are you waiting to see Subaru?", Emilia asked.
"Um… You know. What I will wear when I work… ehe…", he said, trying to cover his excitement. He wanted to see Emilia in the maid outfit so badly.
Emilia felt something was fishy. Subaru had a habit of lying and with experience, she started to understand his behavior when he hid things from her.
"Sure…"
After that fun talk Subaru turned his attention to Rem. Emilia looked at him and then whispered in his ear.
"Try to talk to her."
"Huh?"
When he turned his eyes back to Emilia he saw a warm smile from her. Subaru smiled back in return. He walked ahead, a little too fast, and tried to start a conversation with Rem.
"So… um… I never saw you talk as much as your sister", he said, expecting a reply.
"..."
Silence…
Subaru felt he was sweating.
"Well I guess I need to earn your trust, huh? Right Boss?", he asked, trying to sound funny.
"It will be a high order when I look at you, Barusu", Ram replied.
"You don't have to be that harsh…", Subaru cried out in the good ol' way.
The four of them finally came to the room that contains Subaru and Emilia's new outfits.
"First you Emilia-tan!", Subaru squealed in excitement.
Emilia knew about Subaru's weird antics.
"Hmm… I'm sensing you want something out of this", she voiced her thoughts.
"What? No! Definitely not!"
"Hmm…", definitely fishy, she thought.
Ram gave her a maid outfit.
"This one was made for Frederica but there are few more of this so don't worry about it", she said.
Emilia smiled looking at it.
Ram looked like she was expecting something from her.
"Do you want so-"
"Thanks for the help Boss!", Subaru jumped in before Emilia could finish.
Oh… Yeah Thanks for helping Boss", Emilia expressed her gratitude.
"Mhm!"
Emilia went ahead to change her dress to a maid outfit.
"Come on! Come on!", Subaru felt like he could start jumping any moment.
Rem held Subaru.
"Huh…?"
"Sir… I mean Subaru, Time for you to test your outfit too…", she said.
"But I…"
Subaru thought for a while and ended up agreeing. "Yeah sure let's go. "
Subaru got an outfit that Roswaal wore. Obviously it was a little big for Subaru.
"…Right… I forgot about this..."
"It's I guess a bit big for you sir- I mean Subaru", Rem said.
Subaru nodded in agreement and requested, "Well… Yeah. Can you make it smaller for me?"
"I… Well I can", Rem replied.
"Oh if Frederica or some one else can do it, it would be fine too", he said, not wanting to come out as forceful.
"No, I can do it."
Rem started to look at Subaru's body height to adjust Roswaal's outfit to fit him.
While Rem did that Emilia finally came back with her new maid outfit. With those gorgeous silver hair complementing black and white maid outfit, Subaru was finally satisfied with the result.
Emilia on the other hand, had her entire face red upon looking at Subaru.
"So you were looking for this?", she asked in a low voice.
"I mean… Kinda…", Subaru agreed but in half denial.
"I regret wearing this", Emilia started to get upset.
" B-But you look gorgeous!", Subaru replied honestly this time.
"...Fine. I'm happy you liked it." Emilia started to calm down and looked at Subaru.
"That's a long outfit", she said.
"Well… there's no choice. I guess I have to work with what I usually wear for today."
"I took all the things I needed to know, Subaru." Rem had completed taking the measurements.
"Good job Rem!", Subaru tried to pat her head but she quickly went to her sister's side.
Ram huffed and said, "I guess you have to do with your hideous clothes for today, Barusu. Well, now I will show you what you have to do."
They weren't ready for the job they were about to get.
First Subaru was going to cut the grass and handle bushes in the backyard, while Emilia needed to clean all the corridors in the mansion.
"Oh!", they both said in unison.
"Start your jobs now!", Ram ordered.
Subaru was a little bit more experienced with this stuff but the task being long and tedious still frustrated him a bit.
"Amazing… My favourite…", he huffed.
While Emilia…
"Oh this will be easy!"
Emilia wiped the floors but she took too much water from the bucket and every floor she cleaned became extremely slippery.
"This is actually fu- AAAAA-"
She fell on the ground.
When she fell, Subaru saw her from the window. Hearing her scream got him scared if something bad had happened but then he realized the reason why she fell and chuckled.
Emilia looked at him with a face that said, "Cut it out!"
Frederica went to check if something bad happened to Emilia and she slipped as well. At that point Subaru was laughing so hard that everyone in the mansion heard him.
Ram came in with a dash and smacked the back of his head.
"Continue working, idiot", she glared.
Subaru quickly got serious.
"Yes Boss!"
Now Subaru looked back to see Emilia was the one laughing at him. At first he was frustrated in a competitive sense but then slowly looking at her laugh made him smile and continued working happily.
Frederica saw what happened to Subaru and she was laughing too.
"He is really funny", Frederica giggled.
"Yeah, that doofus always does this funny things", Emilia smiled in agreement.
Frederica looked at Emilia's face. Whenever she talked about Subaru her face looked so happy. Frederica even thought she might be…
"I guess it was like that huh?", she said with a smug face.
"Wh- What do you mean?", Emilia asked, not understanding why she was getting embarrassed.
"I mean how you look at him. How proud you are when you talk about him. Your one room choice was what I was thinking about all along", Fredrica answered.
Emilia's face started to blush.
She stammered and said, "Oh yeah… We can change our rooms now by the way… I- I just needed to talk to him about so-something…"
Fredrica raised an eyebrow and asked, "But do you really want that?"
"I- I mean he probably had a rough time sleeping with me. So it's probably better…", she tried to make up a reply, however unreal it felt.
"Let's see then…", Fredrica said while getting up.
"Huh-"
Walking up to the windows, Fredrica pushed them open.
"HEY SUBARU!", she called out.
"Yes! Did something happen?" Subaru ran up to her.
"No! But can you answer a question?"
"Of course!", he replied, wondering what it might be.
She leaned in close and asked, "Did you like sleeping with Emilia?"
"AAAAA! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?", Emilia shouted while covering her face with her hands.
Subaru's face turned red in a split second.
"I-I…"
"SUBARU SHE IS JUST JOKING YOU DON'T NE-", Emilia called out, trying to cover up for him.
"She… She was like an angel…", he said calmly.
"I…", Emilia couldn't think what to say.
"I was happy being with her in every single second", he smiled.
"See", Fredrica looked at Emilia while pointing at Subaru.
Both Emilia and Subaru were not hearing Frederica anymore; they just tried to focus on their jobs while blushing hard and mumbled stuff that no one could hear.
"I… guess I went too far…", Fredrica thought.
They continued working till it was evening and dinner time came for their first day.
"I'm so hungry that I can eat everything!", Subaru shouted.
"Thank you for everything you have done for us", Emilia said while smiling.
"Frooom what I heard you have done a good job Suuubaru and Emilia.", Roswaal praised both of them.
"Emilia-tan you are way too kind for that bastard…", Subaru thought, but he couldn't say that.
"Yeah… thank you", he said, while forcing a smile.
Ram and Rem came with the food.
"Let's see how many amazing dishes you made for us, Rem!", Fredrica smiled while clapping her hands.
"Rem did the food?", asked Subaru.
"Of course. Rem is one of the best cooks you can ever meet on this planet", Ram replied proudly.
"I… I mean at least I can do this, but compared to my sister what I do is nothing…", she said with quite a melancholic tone.
Subaru wanted to act upon what she said to cheer her up.
"Re-", he was cut in between.
"Your food is always great, Rem. To be honest I hope our new recruits aren't as tasteless as they seem to be", Ram said while glaring at Subaru.
"Hey I know what's good food or not!", Subaru shouted.
After a few giggles, he took and ate some food.
"Wow! *munch munch* I-It's amazing! Flavors and everything! It's one of the best *gulp* things I have ever eaten!", he exclaimed with delight.
"Yes it's definitely amazing!", Emilia nodded in agreement.
"That's Rem for you", Fredrica smiled.
Ram put her hand on Rem's shoulders and looked at others.
"I guess they aren't as bad as they seem. Good job Rem."
*Thanks Sister", Rem bowed to her with gratitude.
She didn't give too much emotion on the outside. Same as Ram mostly. She always copied her sister's manners and this was one of them. Even though her sister tried to make her happy, Rem was never confident enough to see her true self. She only saw herself as an inferior version of her sister. Getting help from her sister actually didn't help.
After the dinner Subaru and Emilia went to their room.
"I guess we will continue sleeping together huh…?", Emilia's face was blushing every second she was talking about that.
"Ye-yeah…", Subaru wasn't different either.
"If you want we can have different rooms…", Subaru offered thinking it might put her to ease.
"N-No I… I'm happy you are here with me!", she said hurriedly.
"Me too…", Subaru couldn't stop looking at her.
Eventually, both of them started to think about what happened in their dream.
"Do you think something bad happened to her?", Emilia asked.
"I… I don't know… I didn't see her that much before and she never really made sense when she was talking… But the way she talked this time…", Subaru still couldn't understand.
"I see…"
"Well I suppose we have to figure this out at a different time?", he tried to comfort her.
"I guess…", Emilia nodded.
Suddenly, Subaru remembered something.
"I loved how you look with a maid outfit today though…"
Emilia blushed red and pouted. "That's not fair you didn't even wear yours because it was too big!"
"You already know how ı look like in it tho…", Subaru giggled.
"Yes… But!"
"Well I will wear it tomorrow, okay my amazing queen maid?"
Emilia forced herself hard to not giggle.
"Okay then…"
She went ahead and settled down on the bed, patting Subaru's place beside her.
"Let's sleep then Barusu", she called out.
"Oh so you will use that when you are angry huh Mieria-tan", Subaru smiled smugly.
"Shush!"
Putting a finger on his lips, she pulled his hands.
"Hehe", Subaru giggled as he got on the bed. He looked at her and wished her a good night
Emilia kissed his forehead, turning his face red.
"Hehe… Good night."
It was morning in no time. Emilia and Subaru were given their jobs to do again.
Emilia was with Ram and Rem trying to peel out potatoes.
"So will I cut it like this?", she asked.
"Umm-", Rem was about to correct her, but her sister cut in.
"You are making a mockery out of that potato", she spat.
"But I'm trying not to leave any ski- Ow!"
Emilia accidentally injured her finger.
"It really hurts", she cried out.
"You will cause more problems than help, I suppose…", Ram huffed.
"But I…"
"Let me get a plaster", Rem said while going for the drawer.
"Th-thank you", Emilia expressed her gratitude while holding her finger.
While Rem had gone to bring a plaster, Ram felt her head hurt a bit. She touched it and saw a bit of blood coming out from her head.
"Ram? Are you oka-", Before Emilia realized it she quickly got ahead of Rem.
"I will take it Rem, you should continue your job", she said.
"Alright sister", Rem nodded in agreement.
Emilia was confused about what happened but since she could do nothing about it, she tried to shift her focus back to work.
"I can't do this with a bloody hand…", she said while looking at the potatoes.
"Let me do it." Rem offered her assistance.
"Thanks. I'm sorry I'm making you work more when I was supposed to reduce your workload", Emilia said while looking down.
It's better for me to work", Rem replied in monotone.
"I see. I guess you like working huh?", Emilia asked.
"I…", Rem tried to think of an answer.
"At least you like it more than your sister", Emilia smiled.
"She is already great at what she is doing. Being able to help her like this doesn't really mean much", Rem replied, again in monotone.
Emilia noticed her behavior and thought how much she changed after Subaru came. Before Subaru she was really quiet. Not talking very much, but whenever she did, it was only praises for her sister.
Ram came back looking totally fine.
"There is your plaster Miarie", she said passing it to Emilia
"Thanks Boss."
Emilia was still curious about what had happened to her before she went to take the plaster.
"Did something happen to you?", she asked.
"What do you mean?", Ram looked at her with a twitching brow.
"You looked like you tried to hide your face from us when you went to take the plaster."
"Don't question my goodwill Miarie", she glared.
" I… Sure… Boss…", Emilia decided it would be better to stay quiet for now.
They continued working in the kitchen and Ram kept on hiding her face from Emilia.
While they were working, Subaru was cleaning the bath.
"Cleaning, cleaning and cleaning… it's boring… After all the work I should take a good warm bath to be honest", he said in a voice full of boredom.
While Subaru was cleaning Roswaal came to the bath.
"I guess you are working Suuuuubaru?"
Subaru was caught off guard.
"Please tell me he is not naked please tell me he is not naked"
And he turned back.
"Hello…", Subaru said, raising his hand.
Roswaal was wearing a towel with his chest open.
"Thank god he is not naked"
"I was going to bath buuuut-", he got cut in between.
"My job is almost done, don't worry", Subaru said while hurrying up.
His eye catched something in Roswaal's chest. A giant glowing
"Is that?", he remembered something.
"Huh? I guess yoooou are wondering what is this cuuuurse I have", Roswaal smiled.
"Oh yes… What is that thing?", Subaru played along.
"I have no ideeeea. This thing appeared suddenly. I know that it's a cuurse that I created with an oath. But I'm not sure what that is. Maybe the future will teeell me?", he explained and winked.
"It seems the future will not let you live if you try to hurt us… But if he doesn't lives, then Emilia's future… Dammit…"
"Hmm what's this face you are making Suuuuuubaru?", Roswaal asked in amusement.
"Huh? Ah, It's nothing. Nothing at all! I'm just tired. I will clean this place in a minute and tell you, okay?", he rushed through his reply.
"Oookay…", Roswaal looks at him for a moment but then leaves the room.
"He won't try something evil, right? … I mean we are in the past, why would he... That bastard is trouble even when the one who is in danger is him…", Subaru thought.
After he finished his work, he went to look for the others.
Rest of the day passed by.
At night, Ram entered Roswaal's room.
"Lord Roswaal..."
"Cooome here Ram. It seems you worked too much toooday", Roswaal signaled her to come near him.
"I understand Lord Roswaal", she bowed.
Ram walked up to him and elegantly sat on his legs. Roswaal started to use his mana on Ram's head.
"A-Ah…"
"It stiiiill hurts? I see", Roswaal lowered the force with which he was transferring mana.
"It's nothing Lord Roswaal", Ram tried to make an excuse for her misconduct.
They continued as midnight approached and soon the entire Roswaal manor had gone to bed.
The third day wasn't really that different either. Subaru and Emilia were working like they did before. But this day Subaru went to try and talk to Beatrice. She was always throwing him out of the library but Subaru always kept coming back.
"You are good at being annoying, I suppose", she said while turning the pages of her book.
"You are good at talking harshly, I suppose", Subaru mockingly copied her.
She looked up.
"Betty just wants to be alone, in fact. At least respect that and leave"
"You remember what I said when you saw me for the first time?", Subaru took a deep breath.
"Shu-Shut up…", Beatrice said lightly.
"I won't! I will save yo-"
"SHUT UP!"
Beatrice lifted her hand and pushed him away with her magic. Subaru tried to hold the door to stay inside but Betty wasn't stopping.
"BEATRICE, STOP I'M HERE TO HELP YOU!", he shouted.
The wind was getting stronger and stronger. It went to a point where the power of it could injure him heavily. Right before something bad could happen Ram showed up and pulled him out of the library.
"I…", Subaru looked towards the closed door.
" Huh… Don't do something stupid like that", Ram took a breather.
"I… I'm sorry…", Subaru looked down and replied in a sad voice.
After a few hours Roswaal assembled every worker in the mansion to talk to them.
"I will go for a while to do soooome important business", he said and smiled like usual.
"What is it exactly?", Subaru asked, demanding an answer.
"Well for our future. I was actually planning to take Emiiiiilia to my mansion. Of course not juuuust because of my kindness but alsooo because something tells me that in the future she maaay be an important asset for the future of Lugnica", Roswaal explained.
"Hmm…", Subaru nodded while holding his chin.
"Since she caaaame here much earlier than I had expected, I need to look at some important things regarding it."
"What are those things?", Subaru asked, not ready to leave him easily.
"Things that both of you right now should not think about. After I'm done it will be better for all of our future Suuuubaru", Roswaal replied and winked.
Before Subaru could further say anything, Ram asked him to stop asking any further questions.
"I suppose I should bring your belongings for your journey, Lord Roswaal", Fredrica said while bowing.
"I don't need aaaall of it. It will only take me about two days, counting thiiis day as well", he replied.
Emilia knew what Roswaal had meant but she still had her doubts.
"What are you planning to use me for?", she asked.
"Oh Emiliiia. We will talk about it aaaaafter I handle a few thiiings. But just to let you know, you might have a chance to become the next ruler of Lugnica", he said with an eye closed.
All the other maids except Subaru gasped. Seeing them, Subaru also let out a fake gasp.
"Was he planning this for a long time?", Emilia wondered.
"Of course if you desiiire to be. After I return we can talk abooout those details", Roswaal says and takes his leave.
Another day was over and the next day was coming. A day that Subaru wasn't feeling safe about.
Today he had to go to the village that was nearby.
He remembered the setup and also what could happen.
"Subaru are you okay?", Emilia asked with a worried expression.
"... Yes"
"If you want I can go to the village instead of you. "
"No! Don't worry Emilia-tan, and besides no one remembers what we did so it might be dangerous for you", Subaru tried to calm her.
"You are right", Emilia said as she tried to understand him.
Remembering everything that had happened had changed really hurt Emilia. Not just Puck was gone but all her efforts were forgotten after everyone started to see her for who she was. After what seemed like a curse she was in for years and recently saved, now returned, now everything was returning back to how it always had been. When she was perceived as a monster. The only reason she was able to stay strong was because of Subaru. Because he was still with her.
Later Subaru and Emilia went to meet the others.
"Alright Subaru you wanted to go to the village today right?", Fredrica asked.
"Of course!"
"Well one of us will come with you!", she smiled.
"Alright!", Subaru jumped in excitement.
"Wow those two are really energic today", Emilia thought
"So…" Frederica turns to Ram and Rem.
Both girls were silent.
"Well can I choose one?", Subaru asked.
"Hmm…", Ram glared at him.
"Yeah of course", Fredrica replied.
"I choose you Rem!", he pointed his finger at her and shouted.
Subaru wanted to talk to Rem more. Maybe just like the last time he would be able to help her.
"M-Me?" Rem was taken aback.
"Of course!" Subaru smiled.
"O-k… Sister?", she asked Ram.
"Hmm…" Ram walked up to Subaru and glared at him once again.
"Alright…", she said and huffed.
"Alright are we ready?", Subaru cheered, raising a fist in the air.
Subaru's behavior still seemed weird to Rem. Soon, both of them headed to the village.
Emilia also started working. She was cleaning rooms with Ram. She actually wanted to talk to her after her weird behavior in the past few days ago.
"So Ram…"
"Yes Miarie?", Ram asked, not looking at her.
"Can I ask you something?", Emilia whispered.
"Depends on context", Ram replied in monotone.
"Did something happen in the kitchen when we were cutting potatos?"
Staring into Emilia's eyes, Ram asked, "What do you mean?"
"You were hiding your head. Did you hit somewhere?", Emilia asked while recollecting her memory.
Ram huffed and looked away. "Stop asking stupid questions Miarie."
Emilia raised her voice.
"It's not stupid! What if something bad happened!", she exclaimed.
Ram was shocked with how she reacted. That reaction was something she hadn't seen for a long time. A reaction she didn't saw from anyone other than-
"I will clean other rooms", she said and quickly left.
Subaru and Rem were going to the village.
"Wanna play a game while we reach our destination?" Subaru asked and smiled.
"We have a job to do", Rem replied quietly.
"Come on, it will help us pass time", he said.
"No, we need to do our job", she said, not falling for his tricks.
"Jeez you do like to sound like your sister", Subaru said, getting bored.
"My sister is amazing. I can only hope to be like her", Rem replied.
"Hmm… I think you can be more than that Rem", Subaru looked at her and said.
"Huh?"
"I mean you don't need to compare yourself to her all the time. Even she says how great you are so many times. And to be honest I'm sure everyone would like to get praises from someone as hard to please as her", he chuckled.
"That's because of her kind nature", Rem replied, sounding low.
Subaru looked into her eyes and smiled.
"I mean yeah Ram being kind to you is normal but don't you think you earn her praises?"
"I only do what ı must do", Rem stated.
"Jeez! You're really making it hard for yourself to be happy", Subaru let out a deep breath.
"I…"
Subaru regained his stance again.
"These three days I ate one of the best foods I have ever eaten from one of the most talented cooks I ever met. I saw a really hard working person do everything that is given to her perfectly. You really are amazing as who you are Rem", he said.
His hand approached her head and patted her.
Rem just focused on what Subaru said. She thought about it and looked into his eyes. Finally her lips twisted into a small smile.
"T-Thank you."
"Finally that smile! That cute million volt smile!", Subaru pointed out.
"Your words sound weird", … and her regular way of talking returned.
"Huh...?"
Emilia was looking for Ram.
"Ram? Where are you?", she called out.
Frederica had told her to look in Ram's room. She mostly spends her time in her room other than work. She should probably be there right now.
Emilia entered Ram's room. She started saying Boss instead of Ram. It seems like she likes being called in a higher position.
"Boss? Did ı say something bad?"
A sneeze came from the closet.
"Hmm… I wonder where the Boss can be…", as she sneaked up towards the voice.
Emilia opened the closet, finding her hiding in maid clothes.
"Well she is a child at the end of the day…" Emilia thought while smiling.
Emilia took out all the maid clothes. Ram got out of the closet after that.
"Yo-You are not supposed to be here Miarie!", she pouted.
"It's fine if you want me to leave. I was just worried. Do you need something?", Emilia asked.
"I… No…"
"Alright then but tell me when you need me", Emilia kneeled down and smiled.
"Okay?"
"O-Okay…", Ram said quietly.
Emilia started to walk back to her job.
"Miarie…", the little girl called out.
Emilia turned back. "Yes Boss?"
"Can you stay… for a while?", she asked, holding Emilia's hand.
Emilia smiled.
"Of course."
Emilia and Ram sat down on a bed.
Both stayed silent for a while. Ram started to get closer to Emilia. Her face started to turn red.
"Are you okay Ra-"
Ram hugged her.
"Eh?"
There were small tears coming out of her face. She wasn't making any noise but those tears were real.
Emilia started to pat her head and Ram slowly started sleeping on Emilia's lap. Emilia was shocked. Seeing Ram like this was something she never imagined happening. But also she was relieved. Relieved that in a way she was helping her.
While Ram had so many emotions coming for her at once. Sadness, happiness, pain, fear. Emilia's hand felt comfortable as if she was at home. With her sister, her mother, her father, and her people. After so long the love came from Emilia and Subaru really affected her.
She slept calmly.
Emilia was smiling at the sight she saw. She turned to look at the window.
"Wow it's almost night time. Where are you Su-"
Emilia felt a really bad pain coming from her stomach. Her gut felt like it bled.
"Huh…"
She later looked at her stomach. Her maid outfit was stained red. Ram woke up from the sounds and from the warmth of the liquid.
"Miar-"
Blood was coming from Emilia's mouth. Ram's eyes only saw fear and shock. She tried to help her but it was too late. Emilia wasn't able to speak. She wasn't even able to move. Her eyes saw a crying Ram trying to get help.
"MISS EMILIA! MISS EMILIA! SOME ONE HELP! MISS BEATRICE! FREDERICA! HELP! NO! No…", Ram screamed and wailed.
And soon Emilia's sight started to get darker and darker until she wasn't able to see. Her perception of reality faded away as she took her last breath. Only one final thought came to her mind.
