'Crap! I almost missed my train back!' A green haired boy thought, activating his quirk as he made it onto his hero school's campus and shooting off towards his dorm building. 'I'm so late!'
The greenette rarely spent any time off of campus, but today was a special occasion. He had found out that the little girl that he had saved had a hankering for some sweets, and by god was he going to give it to her! He was her self proclaimed older brother after all!
He waited in line for hours in order to get her the treat she desired most, and finally made it home after receiving the sweet that she had desired. Some sweet apple cinnamon cookies!
'Ahh, she'll be brought to the dorms around 3, I'll have time before everyone gets back!' Izuku proclaimed in his mind, smiling as the dorm's large exterior began to grow closer to the speeding greenette. 'God, I really hope she likes these…'
Reaching the dorm's main entrance, Izuku deactivated One For All and took a deep breath to collect himself before entering. Who knows if someone stayed behind like he had while the class was out and about during one of their famous 1-A outings.
Opening the door, the greenette was met with the sounds of quiet sobbing, an instinctual worry washing over him as he peered past the door to investigate the room in search of the troubled soul.
Izuku soon spotted the person responsible for the quiet weeping, surprised to find that it was Kyouka of all people! She had been one of the most headstrong people in the class, what could she have been crying over? Something must have happened.
'Should I ask if she's okay? Maybe it'd be better if I left her be and quietly made my way past her, I don't want to pry…' Izuku thought, attempting to slowly and quietly shut the door to their dorms behind him, completely forgetting about the fact that Kyouka literally had super hearing.
As the door closed, Kyouka's head quickly spun to face the culprit of the noise, finding that it was the resident cinnamon roll attempting not to disturb her.
"M-Midoriya!? Wh-What are-... No, that's a stupid question, y-you must have saw all of that, huh..?" She questioned, growing a bit pensive as she saw the greenette's concerned eyes stare her down. Great, now she was sad, and completely embarrassed.
Izuku watched in concern as the girl wiped her eyes free of her tears, sniffling softly as he made his way over to the lounge area where she had been seated. As he approached, the purplette pulled her knees to her chest and sat hugging herself somberly.
He couldn't lie to her. "U-Um… Y-Yeah." He answered quietly, sitting beside her, and placing his bags of treats beside him. "S-So, i-i-if you don't mind or anything, w-would you mind telling me what's bothering you? Y-You're not usually like this, Jirou-San… I-I'm admittedly a little worried."
"W-Well, u-uh…" She started, attempting to think of an excuse. Would saying her parents were dead be a bit of a stretch? Yes, yes it would. She couldn't lie to that innocent and concerned face. He was just doing what he moronically did best, look out for others. He was probably the best person for her to confide in. "...I-I dunno… Lately, I've just been feeling kinda… I-Inadequate. Like... in general."
"Inadequate? What do you mean?" Izuku questioned, tilting his head in confusion. What could she be feeling inadequate about? She had an amazing quirk, her music was phenomenal, her sense of humor never failed to have him howling with laughter, and embarrassing as it was to admit, she was drop dead gorgeous. She should have been chock-full of confidence!
Kyouka took a deep breath, "God I can't believe I'm talking about this to you of all people." She mumbled, hugging herself tighter as she shoved her head into her knees. "...I-I just… I just don't feel like I belong. Everyone is out there completing such heroic feats, and what have I done? I sung in some dumb concert for some dumb school festival, and that's it! I went out on a patrol once! Hell, everyone else is out there fighting for their lives nearly on the daily, and the lives of others and they're looking great while doing it! You included!" She ranted, huffing in annoyance as she raised her head from its hiding place in between her knees. "I just… I feel like I'm inadequate. Both in heroics, and… In my looks…"
"Jirou…" Izuku mumbled, watching as tears threatened to fall from her eyes once more. The greenette quickly pulled out a handkerchief and wiped her eyes before she turned to see a small gentle smile gracing the greenette's lips. Sure, she knew he was cute, but getting to see it up close was another thing entirely. "I never knew you felt that way, I'm sorry for not noticing it sooner."
"Yeah, well, you can't exactly read minds, can you?" She mumbled in response, turning away from the gentle green haired boy in a mixture of embarrassment and shame. She really just spilled her guts like that to Izuku Midoriya of all people, he must think she's some kind of weak-willed freak! "...You can't do that, can you?"
"No, I-I can't read minds. Though I bet it would make life a lot easier." Izuku responded, chuckling softly at his lighthearted joke before he sighed in thought. "If it's any consolation, I think I understand what you mean, at least to a smaller scale…"
"You understand how I feel? Midoriya, I don't think you've noticed, but you're kind of the exact type of person I'm referring to when I say acting as a hero and looking good doing it. You're like the exact model of that idea." She deadpanned, staring at the greenette with an annoyed expression.
Izuku shook his head, "No, I mean that feeling of inadequacy. Even people like me feel that way… Everyone in the class has such cool and flashy quirks and I…" He paused, thinking of the proper choice of words. "Well, I didn't start out all that well. I'm sure you remember the countless nurse visits. But that caused me to really struggle with if I could really do it, if I really could become a hero even though I broke myself every time I tried to use my quirk. It bothers me even to this day..."
A short silence washed over them, and Kyouka still wasn't convinced, "Yeah, well, look at you now… You're basically top of the class along with Momo and Iida."
"Ah, but Jirou, I think you fit right in there too." Izuku commented, unconsciously moving a strand of hair away from her teary eyes. They were red and puffy, a good indicator of just how long she had been here crying. "You're plenty heroic to me, and most definitely to someone else who couldn't thank you enough."
"Oh yeah? And who is that?" She questioned in response, rolling her eyes as she emanated annoyance with her tone. Someone thanking her? And for what? She's hardly even done that much out on internships, she couldn't dare call herself a hero.
Izuku smiled, "Eri. The little girl we saved from the Yakuza raid." He explained, turning to her with the utmost sincerity present in his expression. "You know she didn't even remember how to smile when we saved her? It was thanks to you and your music that she found her smile again. You should have seen how ecstatic she was because of your music!"
"...What?" She mumbled questioningly, turning to look at the greenette who merely stared back at her with a warm and comforting smile. "W-What do you mean?"
"I mean…" Izuku started, taking her hands away from her knees and into his own. "You saved her life. You're a hero, Jirou-San. And a good one at that. If it weren't for you, Eri would have never found the light in her life, and it's thanks to your music that she has. I'm genuinely grateful to you for that." He continued to praise, giving her hands a gentle squeeze with the battle-worn hands of his own as a light blush dusted his cheeks. "A-And, w-well… I-I think you look pretty great doing what you do anyways…"
Kyouka's face erupted into a red hue as the embarrassment of the boy's kind words stuck her to her very core, and yet for some odd reason she couldn't bring herself to pull away like she normally could. She didn't want to pull away despite not being able to handle the greenette's kindness.
"Y-Y-You…" She started, stuttering in embarrassment as her body began to quake. Her jacks coiled randomly as she stared at the greenette's piercing emerald orbs, and her heart nearly skipped a beat. "...D-Do you… Do you really mean all that..? Y-You think that highly of me?"
Izuku shook his head as tears streamed down Kyouka's eyes, "No, it's not just a thought, Jirou. I've seen all of it for myself, and I think it's safe to say that my conclusion is the truth. You're a natural born hero, I couldn't lie about that if I tried. I-I'm a horrible liar..."
Izuku wiped her tears once more before pocketing his handkerchief, releasing his hold on Kyouka's hands as he did so. It was an odd sensation of… Emptiness that now filled her hands. They felt cold. Looking down at her hands the door to the dorm slowly swung open at the weak push of a little girl, with their homeroom teacher following behind her.
"Remember, Eri, you'll only be here for an hour and some change. I've got a meeting and Midoriya can only watch you for so long before he has to do his homework." Aizawa's voice spoke, holding the door open fully for the little girl who scanned the area for her green haired brother-figure.
"Ah, Eri! Come over here, I have someone I want you to meet!" Izuku called, gesturing for the little girl to make her way over to the lounge area while he smiled at Kyouka with a side glance.
Kyouka's eyes widened in fear, "W-Wait, M-Midoriya I look horrible, I-I can't meet her like this!" She whispered, gesturing to her puffy red eyes. Izuku merely chuckled and waved off her concerns as Eri made her way over.
"Midoriya, this wasn't what we had discussed…" Aizawa commented, shooting the greenette an angry glare. Izuku merely laughed awkwardly and shrugged his shoulders in response. "Whatever. Jirou, don't tell anyone I left her here with you two, not even your classmates."
"U-Uh, yes sir, o-of course!" She replied, nodding feverishly in understanding as Izuku hoisted Eri up playfully and sat her on the couch between the two of them.
Aizawa gave Izuku a quick nod before heading back off, presumably to whatever meeting he had to attend. Realistically? It was totally a date with . (Soon to be ).
"You're the singer lady!" Eri exclaimed, smiling brightly as she pointed a finger to the purplette. Kyouka jumped at her outburst and gave Izuku a look of concern, but the boy merely smiled and chuckled at her flustered reaction.
Looking down at the white haired girl she awkwardly nodded in confirmation, "Y-Yeah, th-that would be me. I'm the 'singer lady'."
"Wow! I can't believe it! You were so cool on that day, everything went whoosh and the whole crowd was screaming, but you were up on the stage with everyone and you guys were so cool!" Eri praised, raising her hands in excitement as she made little "whooshing" gestures with her small noodle arms. "It was so much fun!"
Kyouka felt her face flush as a smile found its way onto her face. "Thanks, Eri… That means a lot."
"I told you." Izuku commented, causing the purplette's blush to deepen as Izuku pulled out the box of cookies that he had laid beside him before comforting the purple haired girl seated beside him. "Anyways, I have some treats here for you, Eri! You can have some too if you want, Jirou. They're apple cinnamon cookies from the bakery across town."
"Wait, are you serious!? These are my favorite!" Kyouka replied, peering into the opened box of cookies along with Eri, seeing them in all of their cookie glory before taking two, one to hand to Eri, and another for herself. "I didn't even know these were back in stock, they usually sell out immediately!"
"Yeah, well, I-I kinda had to wait outside the store really early." The greenette revealed, remembering the huge crowd waiting outside the store. It was like a brawl trying to get these cookies, but he'd say it was worth it to make Eri happy. Now with the added bonus of Kyouka as well. "A-Are they good? Still fresh?"
Both Kyouka and Eri hummed in delight as they took the first bite of their cookies, a sense of relief and glee washing over them as they goofily gave Izuku thumbs up. This definitely made her decision to stay inside and eventually confide in Midoriya totally. Kyouka was finally starting to feel happy again.
The trio would spend their time enjoying their cookies and all around just having a good time. Kyouka even ended up playing some music for Eri, much to Izuku's enjoyment as he got to see the two of them enjoying themselves and smiling like people should.
"So, still feeling inadequate?" Izuku questioned, whispering to her as the two watched Eri scribble on some paper with crayons. She really wanted to leave the two a present, something to commemorate just how much fun she had with the two people who had brought her the biggest smile she could remember.
"Oh, shut up." Kyouka replied, rolling her eyes as she elbowed the greenette in his side. "...But, yeah. Thanks for this, you really knew just what to say. You really are a hero, Izuku…"
Both teens' faces flushed at the realization of her using his first name. "A-Ah, sorry! I-It just k-kinda slipped out and-"
"N-No! I-It's fine, you don't h-have to apologize!" Izuku dismissed before his face erupted into an even deeper red hue as he mumbled, "H-Honestly, I-I kind of l-liked it… S-So as long as i-it's just us here, f-feel free…"
The two teens sat in an awkward silence with blushes spreading up to their ears. What was this feeling? It was an odd sensation of exhilaration and anxiety, but what was more odd was that the source of it all stemmed from the one in front of them respectively. Sure, they had talked to each other occasionally, Kyouka even considered Izuku a close friend, maybe even closer than anyone in the class excluding Momo, but this was unprecedented. A sudden surge of new feelings…
"Now kiss!" Eri exclaimed, watching the two of them with a playfully innocent smile, her eyes sparkling in amazement. "Izu-nii, I didn't know you were dating the singer lady! Does that make her my sister?"
Both teens froze as Izuku attempted to mutter out some form of a response, but luckily Aizawa had decided to step in to break their awkward situation.
"Eri, I'm here. Hurry and grab your things, we're going home." He called, giving the two teens an odd look as they Eri sat between the two as their faces were red like tomatoes.
"Awww…" Eri whined, picking up her little bag filled with her crayons and other supplies before making a little dash over to her adoptive father. "Bye, Izu-nii! Bye, uhm… Jirou-nee!"
Both teens awkwardly waved the little girl off as Aizawa scooped her up relatively easy and placed her on his shoulders, nodding to the two before walking out of the dorms, leaving the teens in their own little pit of embarrassment and teen angst.
"U-Um… So that was a thing." Izuku mumbled awkwardly after sitting in silence with Kyouka for a minute. "H-How are you feeling now? Better?"
Kyouka sat in silence for a moment as Eri's words seemed to stick with her. It was such an embarrassing misunderstanding, but the worst part was that they didn't even get the chance to clear it up! Perhaps what was even stranger than that was the fact that the idea of being with the greenette didn't bother her all that much. It actually sounded kinda… Nice.
Maybe it was just spending some more time with him, or just how he was able to put her at ease with his genuine comments of her character. He even admitted to thinking she looked good, not even Mineta has her on his radar- Not that she wanted to be on there. He was… Really kind, and maybe that warranted at least some thought into expanding on their relationship.
"Y-Yeah actually, b-but um…" Kyouka started, rolling her jack around her finger as she avoided the greenette's gaze with a deep blush spreading across her cheeks. "Y-You think you could close your eyes? I have something to show you as thanks for today."
"Y-You don't have to-"
"Oi, shut it! Just do it!" Kyouka shouted, pointing her eyes to the greenette's eyes threateningly, causing him to close them out of reflex. Both teens swallowed down their anxiety, Izuku out of fear, and Kyouka out of nervousness about what she was about to do. There in front of her eyes laid Izuku's ironically pudgy cheek right in front of her. It was now or never.
Slowly leaning in the girl closed her eyes and extended her lips. Izuku could feel her breath growing closer to him, but he could only lay still in a mix of fear and anticipation. He dared not move, not unless he wanted to get hurt.
And then...
He felt her lips grace his cheek. A gentle sensation of her soft lips against his face, and although it was merely a peck and only lasted but a moment, in his mind it felt as if the sensation lasted forever. A blush spread up to his ears, and as she pulled away he slowly opened his eyes and placed his scarred hand over where she had just laid her lips.
Turning to her, he saw that she was a flustered mess, even trying as far as to avoid looking at him. He could see that she shot him a glance every couple seconds, but kept her head turned away from him in fear of his reaction.
Honestly, he was baffled. But maybe even more than that, he was entranced. His face still tingled with the lingering sensation of her lips, and in some bold act of courage he realized what he needed- No, what he wanted to do next. He couldn't leave her hanging, and so he leaned into her cheek and went for an equivalent exchange.
Never in a million years did Izuku expect this sort of thing to happen to him. He never even expected himself to get to this kind of level with a girl, but due to this chance encounter he could get the opportunity to have something real with Kyouka. Something neither of them could have ever dreamed of.
And it was all thanks to those cookies.
