Because while I understand that you want to get your point across, you're not entitled to an audience.

Q: What is harassment?
A: ha·rass (h-rs, hrs)

1. To irritate or torment persistently.
2. To wear out; exhaust.
3. To impede and exhaust (an enemy) by repeated attacks or raids.

Harassment is generally when a person (or people) makes it a point to engage someone in ANY form of interaction when that someone has made it perfectly clear that this interaction is not welcome. Actions can be seen as agressive and harassment when they are taken in certain spaces that the recipient feels like they must defend themselves or the space itself.

Q: Wait a moment, the internet doesn't belong to anyone! How can someone say I can't say something to someone on the internet?
A: No one owns the internet as a whole, but people do have personal spaces on it. That livejournal you're commenting on? It was named by its owner, it was decorated by its owner, and the owner posts relevant things pertaining to what THEY like. It is their space. It's the same situation when someone owns a website, or posts a story where reviews can be given. These places are not open forums, they are personal spaces, for specific personal endeavors, and more than likely the people who own them use them to express themselves and not to debate.

Q: But don't I have FREEZE PEACH RIGHTS anyway???
A: Your free speech rights apply in public, they don't apply in private. The internet is just a collection of private sites that network with each other, so when you're on another person's site, you have effectively stepped onto private property. In that respect, you don't have the free speech rights you think you do.

Q: Aren't the people complaining about this being over-sensitive?
A: You don't get to dictate how others react to your interaction with them. Claiming that someone is being oversensitive because they're reacting badly to your invasion of their space and arguing with them when they did not ask to be engaged is a bit hypocritical anyway. If you feel so threatened by what others think that you have to follow them around and refute every instance of that thinking everywhere you see it, I think you're the one who is being overly sensitive.

Q: I can use whatever language I want to express my views, right? So even if I use profanity, it's not my fault if someone takes it personally as harassment.
A: Profanity is not necessary in forming an argument. It ruins your credibility since you have resorted to such tactics to make yourself look more intimidating to the other person. In fact, you WEAKEN your argument by using it. It only proves you feel you have nothing else to say other than to insult your opponent. In which case you should give up your argument altogether because you are simply running on an irrationality that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Q: Are you saying that I can't argue my point of view?
A: No. There is a time and a place and a WAY to engage others that is not inherently disrespectful. Places that encourage mutual debate and discussion and are an open forum are places where you can express your opinion on others' opinions freely. People come there with the express intent of arguing and defending their point of view. You can disagree with them in that forum, and also disagree with them in your private spaces as well. As long as you are not forcing them to defend themselves and their ideas by invading the places they go to get away from that, you are free to express your opinion towards their ideas in any capacity.

Q: How am I supposed to tell people what they NEED to hear, then?
A: First of all, you have an overinflated idea of how important your opinion is if you think people NEED to see it. No one NEEDS to listen to you. No one NEEDS to be bombarded with your point of view. Your arguments are not the word of a deity, and you're a narcissist for thinking so.

Second of all, the simple answer is, "You don't." If there is no desire to hear what you have to say, there should be no attempt to tell someone what you want them to hear. If someone does not express the want to have their views challenged by either verbal terms or by being in a space that promotes discussion – DON'T. It does your argument no good if you present it as an aggressor.

Q: Well if I shouldn't attack people for their opinions, doesn't that apply to racists, misogynists and homophobes too? You're telling me that I shouldn't tell them to stop being bigoted too?
A: When you find someone who is expressing an opinion that is actively degrading to another person or group of people, of course you should challenge it! Again, this is not to say that you cannot express a distaste or a revulsion to certain ideas, including the serious ones. The place to do that is in the public forum, however. When dealing with people who express harmful ideas, it's not just about harassment anymore. People who believe others are inferior will not be persuaded that they are wrong by shouting at them on their personal blogs, websites, or other spaces on the web. The more effective strategy is refuting their ideas on your own space and in spaces promoting discussion and debate. The people who hold unsavory opinions are not persuaded when they are confronted in their space filled with people who agree with them. Chances are, you're not going to get very far in your defense of others.

Any way you look at it, engaging folks in their personal spaces does not make an argument sucessful, and it even makes the argument less likely to succeed.

Q: Well then, what do I do?
A: Well, you could make your own space dedicated to your own point of view. That tends to work pretty well. Or, you know, if the issue isn't actively harmful to anyone, you could just let the damn thing go. You'll probably be a lot happier that way.
