Today was supposed to be a big day for Kate, a really big day. "She's all yours." Rick relinquished control of her wheelchair to her PT guy. "Charlie and I have our own job. Good luck." Rick leaned down and kissed her.

Rick got to see just how slow she really was as they walked toward the doors to reach his truck. "Wait here and I'll get the truck. You stay, Charlie." Rick was sure he would listen and Kate would stop him if for some reason he didn't.
Rick pulled up at the curb. He took her crutches and put them in the bed and still picked up Kate and put her into the truck.
"Where are we going?" She was expecting to go home but he was going the wrong way.
"We're going to show off your walking to your parents so we're going to their office. Maybe they'll have another client."
"Maybe." Her parents were finally getting noticed. They were now the official lawyers for the City of Laurel, Mississippi. The city didn't need them at the moment but they did have two clients and each wanted something different.
They were still sending out fliers advertising themselves and last they knew they had a meeting planned with a local business to be their lawyers.

"Their car is still here at least." Rick saw their Explorer and parked a few spaces down from it and as close as he could get to their door. He leaned her crutches against the truck, opened the door, and lifted Kate out. He set her down and handed her her crutches, and then put Charlie down who ran down the sidewalk to the door. He knew where Jim and Johanna were located and barked to get their attention.
"Hi, Charlie!" Jim opened the door and watched him rush inside to find Jo. "KATIE!?" He stood there in shock as his daughter was slowly – very slowly – making her way to him.

Kate didn't take a step before she was being hugged first by her father and then her mother.
Jo smiled through her tears. "You didn't tell us." This was rather a huge shock.
"I wanted it to be a surprise."
Her mother's eyebrows shot up. "I thought you hated surprises."
"No, Mom. I hate getting them. I don't hate giving them."
"I see." Jo was going to have to keep that in mind. "Come on inside. We need to leave in 30 minutes so you two can stay for a bit."
Since his wife had their daughter Jim paid attention to Charlie. "So did you have fun in the hospital?" Jim petted him and kissed his furry head. "I'll bet you were a big hit as always." Seeing Katie walking, even if it was on crutches, told him getting Rick and Charlie to come with them had been worth it.
"Got a minute, Mom?" Kate was in a chair all the way down in the lunch room space while her dad, Rick, and Charlie were at his desk.
Jo moved a chair right next to Katie and sat down. "I'm all ears."
"Please don't be angry, but I've been dating Rick while you and dad are at work." Kate came clean with her mother. As clean as she was willing to go.
"I thought so. Don't look at me like that. I'm not blind, Katie. Rick is a good man and he has a good job. I've seen how comfortable you are around him."
Kate blushed. "My PT guy wanted to know if Rick was my boyfriend. I was thinking of calling him my boyfriend. After we talked about it first," she confided.
Before Kate could blink her mother was up and hugging her. "If you're worried about your father I'll talk to him." Jo sat back down. "Do you know if he has a plan? What happens after you really are walking? I mean we talked him into this because of you and what Charlie is capable of. We don't expect him to live with us forever.
"So you like him?" Jo needed to hear it from her lips.
"Yes, Mom, I do." Kate glanced away briefly then looked back at her mom. "You're not angry?"
"After some of the supposed boyfriends you put us through in high school? You must be joking. He's a good man, Katie. Just make sure he's what you're looking for."
"I'm trying, Mom, I'm trying." Kate didn't know what their future was but she was willing to see what it was.
"Great! Now do you know what these letters from Black Pawn are all about?" Jo asked her since that was still a mystery and she was betting her daughter knew.
"It's not for me to say. But yes, I do." Kate smiled since she knew something they didn't. At least for now.
"I'll figure it out eventually." Jo could wait a little longer.
"TIME TO GO, JO!" Jim yelled from his desk where Rick and Charlie still were.

"Rome wasn't built in a day," Rick mentioned.
Jo pointed at him. "Exactly!" Then she unexpectedly walked over to Kate and put the back of her hand against her forehead. "Do you feel okay?"
"I feel fine, never better. ...Why?" She had to use crutches but she was really making progress.
"You look flushed and you're smiling." Jo stared at her for a moment but left her to open the refrigerator to figure out what she had to make for dinner.
