It was raining heavily, the previous azure sky covered by large gravel-grey-coloured clouds. The winds roared in eerie fashion along with downpour sounding like the buzzing of several million bees.
BOOM- an extremely loud thunder crack sounded. Come to think of it the weather felt weird, almost wrong in a way. There was just too much lightning even for a rainy season in London. But enough about that I was already extremely late from work as it is. My roommate was probably panicking right now and rightfully so.
I parked my car and got out. Nothing out of the ordinary so far. But just before I could move a single step, that's when I felt it.
A flash of light, and pain. Extreme and excruciating pain.
I maintain consciousness for about a second before I was in a complete blackout state.
Groaning, the first thing I see is a stark white ceiling. The smell that assaulted my nose is that of bleach, alcohol, and sickness.
'The smell is definitely that of the hospital,' I think to myself.
"Look, the patient is awake," said a voice to my right. Turning my head I gaze at the spectacled man before me.
"How are you feeling Mr. Langston?," he asked me.
I blink a few times before saying, "May I have some water please, my throat feels dry."
"Of course Mr. Langston," he replies. Getting up he fills up a plastic cup of water and hands it over to me before sitting back on his revolving chair.
I sit up, accept the offered cup of water and drink it up. My mind however was somewhere else.
"How long was I out for?"
"About 4 days. You were quite close to the explosion."
The last thing I remembered was coming out of my car and then a flash along with pain. Wait was I- yes I was hit by lightning. A 1 in 15000-20000 chance and I had to be the one. Well, I was still alive so that was a plus. To be honest I felt completely fine although slightly hungry. I hope my roommate Alex was doing alright. Something was wrong though about this whole situation however I simply couldn't put my finger on it. I just hoped it wasn't related to my job being a travel agent and all that.
"Are you feeling alright?," my doctor once again asked me startling me out of my thoughts.
I blink twice before finally asking, "Yes. I've never felt better in years."
This was true because right now I felt energized and incredibly hyperactive. I felt like I could run a marathon. I was never the fittest person amongst my group but I was definitely good at sports such as running. When I was around 13 years old I wanted to learn MMA because all the 'cool kids' were doing it (definitely not my fear of bullying). No, I wasn't the crème de la créme, but I was still fairly good at the sport.
My dream job however was to be a pilot which is why I did my best at perfecting my scores in science and mathematics. Whatever work I did, I had to do it with perfection or at least to its best and no it wasn't a case of OCPD.
If something didn't work or it had heavy consequences if it worked, I would leave whatever it is alone. It was always better to do things safely and soundly. As the saying goes, safety is the number one priority.
"I see that's good then. Doctor Osborn shall be visiting you shortly along with your father," he replies. I smile lightly befo- wait what?!
"I'm sorry doctor did you just say doctor Osborn?" I ask worriedly.
"Yes, Mr. Langston I did. You work for him don't you?", he in turn inquires with an eyebrow raised. I work for who now?! The Norman Osborn, the green goblin. This doesn't make any sense! He's a fake movie/comic character who shouldn't exist unless the person in front of me is playing some sort of elaborate prank. No that's not a possibility. The guy in front of me looked extremely serious with that deadpan expression of his. I was panicking badly.
"Excuse me doctor, but could you tell me what year it is?," I ask. I had to know. Am I drunk? Is this a dream?
"The year is 2007." Great, just great. Here I thought being struck by lightning was bad, but now either I've time travelled or dimension travelled both of which are bad news. The only good thing was so far was that the doctor seemed to know my name so I existed here.
"Excuse me sir, but you seem to not remember certain memories. You might have amnesia too." The doctor noted once again.
"I-I...", I spluttered due to my distressed state. Fuck, I couldn't form even a coherent sentence.
'Calm down!', I mentally scream to myself. 'Panicking will get you nowhere.'
Wait... was I in someone else's body? Was I reincarnated like those isekai anime or something? Do I have this body's memories?
As if on command I was hit by an onslaught of memories.
Growing up as young boy.
Mother passing due to cancer at the age of 10.
Studying a lot and getting perfect scores in Mathematics, Physics, and Biology.
Wanting to develop a cure from cancer.
Having a girlfriend. Breaking up.
Being picked up as a scientist for Oscorp industries due to my smarts.
Explosion at laboratory.
And so much more
I grimace and grab my head. It was just for a moment but the headache still had its effect.
"Mr. Langston are you alright?," the doctor asks me worriedly.
"Yes, doctor. Just a slight headache. Excuse me for my rude behavior but what is your name?"
"It is fine," he waved off my apology. "My name is Ethan. Ethan West." He got up and left the room presumably to look at another patient.
My mind was still in a jumble. I still needed to sort out my memories completely.
Thank the gods I was still named David Langston.
The door opened and revealed both my father and Norman Osborn in all his glory.
He looked exactly like the actor Willem Dafoe with that suit.
My father rushed towards me and hugged me tightly. "I'm so glad you're alive son. I don't know what I would've done if I lost you too." he sobbed.
"I'm fine dad, I'm fine now. Thank you for worrying for me," I reply hugging him back. I'm glad I had my dad still alive. In my old life, I had both my mother and father still in this world, I couldn't live without either of them. 'It's not until you lose everything that you can truly appreciate everything' and god wasn't that saying so true. With both memories I now both knew what it feels like to have a mother and also to not have one.
"Now that we're done with the reunion," the voice to my left startles both me and my father as we instantly pull back from the hug. He chuckles amusedly, "Not that I mind really, it's always good to see people happy. Regardless, I hope you're doing well Dr. David?"
"Yes, I'm doing fine now. I'll probably be discharged in a few days," I reply. I was nervous, incredibly so. But I stayed calm by clenching my fist ever so slightly.
"Hmm yes, I certainly do hope so. Take the month off, you've performed wonderfully over the years you've worked here. You deserve it," he says with a smile.
"Thank you, Dr. Osborn, I appreciate it." I really did.
"Think nothing of it," he waves a dismissive hand. "Next time we will increase the overall safety of the experiments we conduct at Oscorp. The explosion was an unfortunate accident that must not be repeated," he says in a firm tone. I give a nod. "Excellent. I'll be taking my leave now, I'm sure you and your father have a lot to discuss."
"Yes, Dr. Osborn," I reply once more.
He smiles once more before leaving. I let out a sigh of relief. God that was so nerve-racking. Meeting him in person as Norman Osborn, knowing that one day he'll become a supervillain known as the green goblin was stressful. This future knowledge thing will make me extremely paranoid of my surroundings, always making sure nothing kills me from behind.
This was also extremely bad because for one I am a scientist in this world and quite the smart one too. I'll probably be used by telepaths or held at gunpoint by some psychopath who'll want me to work for them. This was the Marvel universe after all where gods like Thor, Hela, Odin, and Zeus exist. Beings like Dormammu, Galactus, and oh... god.
Thanos. The guy who wants to kill half the universe to restore 'balance' on a 'grateful' universe. Fuck that guy man. He probably wants to play god because his 'balanced' world, in my personal opinion, was a load of nonsense. The long-term effects of his plan would be catastrophic. There are enough resources for each species on different planets to use, they simply lacked the technology to use it effectively. What would happen once the population of each planet once again regained its original state? Would he kill them all again? Since he had destroyed the infinity stones he'd have to kill them with his bare hand again. Yeah, Thanos was simply a powerful genocidal mad alien.
"David," my dad's voice interrupted my thoughts. How am I thinking so fast?
"Yes dad?" I ask.
"Tell me everything that happened," he said in a soft voice but with a slight edge. It was more of a demand if anything.
"Sure. So here's what happened. There was this machine..."
I was finally discharged from the hospital 5 hours late. Since I had a month off I decided to first head back home. Interestingly, my dad and I lived separately. He lived in a separate state altogether.
It also seems like my roommate Alex didn't exist. I hope he's doing well in the other universe.
One taxi drive later... and I was back. Opening up the house door I enter and lock the door.
I felt hungry, really hungry. Some food would do me good.
But first I needed to change up.
20 minutes later...
Typing into my laptop while I eat was a habit of mine, one that I intended to change. Bits of food might gets stuck that I wouldn't know off. Wouldn't want it getting dirty now, do we? Alright first let me type.
Tony Stark- I tapped the first result, a Wikipedia page. The guy in looks exactly like the actor Robert Downey Jr. which now confirms that I'm in the MCU. He hadn't declared himself as Ironman yet since the year was 2007. Another picture shows his father who looks like a doppelganger of Dominic Cooper. Despite Tony Stark being a sarcastic asshole, I still was a fan of him. I shook my head out of those thoughts. Moving on.
Captain America- There was a picture of him standing in front of his team with his famous shield. James Buchanan Barnes aka future Winter Soldier stood to his left, though behind him. I scan the picture to see if there was any sign of Logan but there wasn't. That meant mutants didn't exist which also means no over complications to the timeline along with the fact that cap's shield was most likely made of only vibranium.
Charles Xavier- there were no results on him other than a man who I had hair and could walk. This confirms that mutants don't exist. I breathed a sigh of relief. Thank the lords.
Reed Richards- he doesn't exist either, even better news. That means no Dr. Doom and if there was one person I would be absolutely terrified of, it would be him.
Janet Van Dyne- Aha, she exists. She and Dr. Pym manage to stop a Soviet missile in 1987. Janet was reported to be dead in the same year, however, I knew better. She got stuck in the Quantum Realm.
Hulk- hasn't shown up yet but he would appear in 2011.
Grabbing another loaf of bread and butter my inner thoughts continue to rage. I was in the Marvel universe with nothing but my wits. Tony Stark managed but he was rich. Way richer than I could ever be. Reed Richards, Dr. Doom, and Hank Pym were some other smart people that I knew of but the first two had superpowers with the latter being or at least had been backed up by S.H.I.E.L.D.
Whilst I was doing this I accidentally knocked down the glass of water next to me with my elbow from the table. I wouldn't be able to catch it in time and my carpet would be wet. Dammit!
And that's when it happened.
Time slowed down to such an extent that the glass was moving barely a micrometer per second or at least a microsecond through my perspective. The world also got slightly darker. I blinked twice to check if this was real. I bring up my hand and my eyes widened at what lay before it.
My hand was surrounded by yellow lightning. Just like the Flashes from the TV show. But I can think about that later, the glass of water comes first.
Grabbing the glass of water I set it back up. Things were still in slow motion. I willed my speed and perception to return to normal. Everything instantly returned to its original speed.
My mind was still reeling from the discovery. Was I in some sort of Omniverse? DC x Marvel crossover? I hope not because that would be bad, really bad news. Regardless I had some testing to do.
Ok, it was 3 AM and I was at the nearest park next to my house. I made sure to triple-check if anyone was there. No cameras either.
I was wearing a ski mask, a black hoodie, black track pants, black gloves, and white sneakers. No, I wasn't trying to look edgy. I simply wanted no one to recognize me if there was somehow someone managing to spy on me. What I was paranoid, can you blame me?
Placing the stopwatch next to the starting point of the 500m running track, I take a deep breath. Ok, this is the moment of truth, the leap of faith for me. I hope I don't fuck anything up.
'Deep breaths David, being nervous isn't gonna help you', I think to myself.
Alright, stopwatch, now's you're turn.
"Beep," 3, "Beep," 2, "Beep," 1, "Beep," Go!
I pulled on whatever force was inside me and RAN.
In my honest opinion, it was both exhilarating and disappointing.
Exhilarating because I had a superpower man! That too the power of super speed, one of the most OP of them all. The only one I could get better was being a reality manipulator on the level of Franklin Richards. The disappointing part however was my perspective whilst running. Now to others, I may look like a blur, but to me, I was running normally which sucked because if I have to run long distances time would still pass at the same speed for me. I guess you can't have it all.
I decided to ten laps while I was at it, which was about 5 km.
Once I reached the end, I looked at the stopwatch. It seems I took only 8 seconds which put my speed at Mach 1.8. I stopped channeling the speed force in me and the speed at which the watch ticked seconds returned to its original state. Good enough for a newbie.
Alright this seems cool and all but the flash had way more powers than that. So far I seem to have fast reflexes, super speed, good memory, and the ability to perceive my immediate surroundings in slow motion. Am I forgetting something, because I feel like I am. Oh right, a healing factor! Hmm, I'll have to test that out later.
The ability I was mainly ecstatic about was to perceive everything around me faster. Combine this with good long term memory, it was pure hacks. The Flash is an OP character who always held back.
I would become more powerful as time goes on, but I'll make sure not to effect the people around me.
I smiled as I looked up in the night sky.
I would become strong, strong enough to keep humanity and myself safe.
