The issue he was having at the moment was whether or not he should tell her about Smith or keep it from her. On the one hand, if he tells her she will most likely take her gun out and shoot him with it. But on the other hand, he thinks the rational side of her will see that he was doing what he was doing for a good reason. Lying by omission is still lying and he would never do that to her so he will need to come clean.
Smith had searched him out and gave him information about someone higher up who had been watching her every move regarding her mother's case and her progress at the 12th. He also told him that Montgomery was going to be the last of her defenses. After the information he got from Smith, Rick had put together that Montgomery was just as dirty as Raglan and McAllister were. It really was not that much of a stretch to figure out. But he still doesn't know the particulars about why they were dirty. From his research into Simmons, all he knows is that Raglan was being used as a drug courier for Simmons' operation early in his career.
He sits behind his desk with his laptop in his lap putting the final touches on his latest chapter and possibly the end of the book. But in the time he has been sitting here contemplating what to do about telling Kate what he knew he stopped typing hours ago.
He's not sure who Raglan was talking about when he mentioned the first three letters of someone's name before he died and now he'll never know. With the issue of not telling her or telling her, he has never fully researched who it could be. But then he gets an idea that if he can find out who Raglan was talking about and come up with a solid lead she might forgive him for not telling her in the first place.
The next thing that he remembers her saying to him at the crime scene was how different it was when somebody was killed right in front of you. She was right. What he feels now is something he never thought he would feel during his time working with the CIA, actually, he never did feel it but he came close once.
His classification as an analyst kept him in a 10x10 room collating date, assigning assets to op's and the occasional recon, all from the comfort and safety of a satellite hovering about 186 miles up in space. One time, he went out on an actual operation but that in itself was from far away. He never knew the havoc his intel had caused to the insurgents and any people lost to collateral damage.
Knowing this will be a task that he is not ready for, he saves and closes the current chapter he's working on and starts the search for whoever could be the person Raglan was talking about.
Roy needs to act fast. He knows his time is limited because Bracken will take him out without a second thought and when he least expects it. But this thought makes him think about how Bracken will have the balls to take out an active NYPD Captain with little or no repercussions or a heavy presence by the department in the form of a full-scale investigation. He knows that Bracken fears no one. But maybe he has one ace up his sleeve that he can use to his advantage. He watches from his desk as Beckett heads from her desk to his office.
The knock she gives on his door is demanding.
"Enter," Roy says.
"Sir, I need to work this case."
Roy had been expecting this and when he gets done telling her why she can't work the case she'll be more than upset.
"Beckett there is no way that you are coming anywhere near this case. You'll run head-on without any respect for your safety. I am going to order you to go home and let Esposito and Ryan take the lead on this one."
"Roy, I need to work this case. I have to be the one who finds out what happened to Raglan. He's the key. He's the one who started all this 19 years ago."
"Kate you're done! You're no longer on this case. As a matter of fact, take the rest of today off. I don't want to see you back here until the day after tomorrow."
Kate just stood there staring him down. After a tense two minutes, she knew that he was not going to back down. So she opens his office door, walks out, and slams the door as hard as she can, almost making it come off its hinges. She walks over to her desk, picks up her jacket from the back of her chair, and walks out not saying a word.
Roy watches as she leaves the 4th floor. He immediately calls in Esposito and Ryan to take over where she left off. They're going to be against it but he'll make them do it no matter what. When he gets done assigning them this case and deals with their insubordination he will have to make a very important phone call.
Just as they try to exit his office he stops them dead in their tracks.
"If you want to help her solve this goddamn case."
The boys look over to him and nod in silence. They have their work cut out for them.
Kate sits in her living room thinking about what her next move will be. She wants to desperately call Rick and see if he is free to meet but as she raises the phone to dial his number she chickens out. She hears a knock on the door and she goes on full alert. Her service weapon is ready to deal with any threat. She checks the security peephole and sees the person she was just going to call seconds ago rocking from foot to foot waiting for her to answer the door.
The CIA has a very vast information network. They have assets in the field that can give them intel on demand at any time day or night on any subject or situation they want anywhere on the globe. But what they rely on the most is the fact that they have a database that covers almost six acres of underground real estate hidden under Langley.
This area houses rows and rows of a computer network that operate at a zeptosecond once the last keystroke command is entered. But what really gives them the edge is that they can ascertain who, when, where, and why someone would want to hack into their system. Identifying the perpetrator is a fast process and the user never knows that they have been exposed to their location and IP address. This procedure is almost as fast as the information that they are giving out to whoever is requesting it. It's like they play a cat-and-mouse game. They let the user think that they're getting away with whatever they're trying to access but then the hammer comes down.
This is the issue that the technician is having right now. Someone from a suburb of Washington D.C. has accessed the file of one of their assets. Their location is not yet known but where they are accessing the net from is. He saves the IP address and works on the physical address. Within a second he has the information he needs. 3310 14th St. NW. He saves everything and gets up from his workstation to see his supervisor.
Luis Hernandez has been the section supervisor here at Langley, well underneath Langley for the past 23 years. He's seen just about every ploy hackers have used to access their information. They never succeed. At the knock on his door, he looks up and sees his top hacker killer.
"Adam, what can I do for you?" Luis asks.
"I have information of an intrusion. It happened just about a minute ago. I have already run standard protocol to find out his location and IP address. I wanted to know if you wanted to run the entire background on this person?"
Luis waves in Adam and motions him to have a seat in the chair in front of his desk. He's thinking that this is a no-brainer but he's reluctant at first.
" Adam this could be a standard information gathering intrusion. But here's what I want you to do. find out whether this is a laptop or desktop. Get me everything you can on whatever piece of equipment this is from its inception until two minutes ago. I want to know where it's from, who owns it, and everything technical about it."
"Yes sir."|
Adam leaves his supervisor's office and gets back to work. It takes him hardly any time at all to figure out the exact location of where this person is trying to access their information. Whoever it is they are at a place called Coffy Cafe. But then he stumbles upon something very odd. The signal he's getting from the Coffy Cafe is being rerouted from another location. It's a good set up but he instantly saw through the ruse. Whoever it is is not actually sitting in the Coffy Cafe in D.C. they are somewhere in upstate New York.
It takes some time but he narrows down exactly where they are. 35 Morris Lane, in Scarsdale, NY. He does a quick search as to who owns the property there and comes to find out that one Elizabeth Bracken owns the property. He knows that name. He thinks about it for a while and remembers that William Bracken is a U.S. senator from the state of New York. He quickly compiles that information along with financials and phone records for William Bracken. He uploads everything to the CIA's secure server. And then he starts working on the equipment that Mr. Bracken is using to access the files he's currently looking at.
Not long after remotely accessing the laptop that's currently accessing information from the CIA he finds out that the laptop he's using is property of the United States Senate. As Bracken starts searching again Adam can see exactly what he's looking at. At the same time he's recording every keystroke Bracken performs. He now gets up and talks to his boss Luis. Knowing that this could be a can of worms, he forwards all the information to his boss and lets him decide.
He needed to find out what he could about Castle. Bracken had accessed the CIA's mainframe with little regard for being caught. He thought that the senate's laptop was encrypted and no one could trace it. He thought wrong.
