It may not be so great, Naruto thought; that big shinobi career. His friends have intonated that sentiment as well. For example, despite Haku’s concerted efforts to locate and connect with his long lost clan and Hyoton-kin, he may find out he was meant to be their janitor or something. Gaara is Kazekage now, Naruto noted, but Gaara said 10 straight hours of paperwork a day is not glamorous. His eye-bags have gotten worse due to the workload. Jiraiya insisted they can all be Kage someday. That is, Naruto kindly reminded him, if they survived the Akatsuki’s next visit.

[Haku sat down at the table with his stack of books and watched as Zabuza mechanically put away the foodstuffs, "Is it true that a shinobi made the moon?"

Zabuza paused and turned slowly to look at the boy. They locked gazes for a moment before he replied, "I can honestly say I have no idea."

Haku held open the page he had read that had an illustration to go along with it. The silhouette of a sage was depicted and Haku tapped it with his finger, "This says Rikudō Sennin made the moon. He did it to seal away a great evil."]

This will be a sort of public proposal catalyzed by commentary given to me and also to some friends who have shared their experiences.

If, while reading a fanfic or work that anyone has written and posted (and is not profiting from,) my own included, please: do not post flames in reviews. Should your intent to criticize be purely constructive and helpful in nature, please DO contact the author in a PM. Ask the author if s/he is seeking criticism, or at the very least be as polite as possible while communicating what you think can be improved.

Simply put, when a reader leaves scathing, degrading comments in an author’s reviews section, it is humiliating. It is disrespectful of the author and those that (quite possibly) reacted positively to the fanfic that you want to critique. This is NOT a denial of the critic’s opinion or honesty mattering in any sense, nor does it suggest the author gives a fcuk about what a critic thinks. But fans of fan fiction should try to participate in the community with as much empathy as they would expect in return. It is all too easy to hide behind anonymous guest posts and faceless accounts to wound others and not face any consequences. Such behavior is not commendable within fan fiction spheres that, fundamentally, seek to promote and celebrate whatever it is the critic and thousands of others enjoy reading about. Subtract the negativity wherever and whenever possible.

PM the author to share your thoughts if you suspect your comment will have a negative association. There’s no use in hiding behind the cliche concept of “sticks and stones”: words can and do hurt.

I would not advise any of this to others if I did not authentically comport myself this way in the fan fiction community. Poor feedback does indeed demotivate fanfic authors, inspire writers to abandon stories, or just make a person feel stupid or talentless in general. No, a critic who feels justified in his/her commentary does not have to agree with the aforementioned suggestion. The critic does not even have to abide by or attempt to PM someone they seek to criticize, ridicule, flame, etc. in a review. But a critic does have to acknowledge that his or her feelings and thoughts matter no more or less than those of the author’s. Consider the other person's feelings if you review in this manner, and do not assume your own personal reaction of "shrugging things off" is how others will react. Manners maketh man.

Oh hey there anonymous rage-reviewer! How are you today? Huh. Is that right? So you say you are having a very bad day...and you do not genuinely care for the meat and bones of my fics...heck, you did not even read a fic of mine! But you still needed to comment to blow off steam and inflict uncalled for cruelty anonymously on the nearest, most accessible person? I hear you loud and clear. I love you. I adore your nonsensical rage. It gets me off.

I see you too anonymous rage-reviewer who has read every single word of all of my fics. I promise I would never exclude you. I love you too. You did put in an unnecessary amount of effort to read stories that you absolutely abhor, and had to get into the nitty-gritty details of why that is in a long review rant. Kudos. You see...most anyone else would have just clicked away, or proceeded to another part of the internet he or she likes better. Next time, give that a try. Go find something you do enjoy and embrace it. Nurture it. And for all the fanfics and manifestations of other people's creativity you are (not admittedly) jealous of...just avoid those. I promise it won't hurt you. It won't hurt anyone else either, and that is the point. If you don't like it, don't read it. You are not incarcerated in the endless prison of the fanfic that you discovered you detest. Go and be free! Though seriously, it was some crazy effort on your part to provide such a long and negative review. I would give you props but, tee hee, no one knows who you are. That's the downside of cowardice.

Sorry, proud name-displaying rager, I did not mean to skip you. You do you, baby. You hide from no one! You happily let the admin kick you off any site you regularly abuse people on. Have at it, friend. Like our acquaintances listed above, I do not judge you. I will never call you names or belittle you. I embrace you. I get orgasmic pleasure from negative comments, because they now are definitively juxtaposed to the numerous supportive readers' reviews that love what they are reading. That sharp relief...that contrast of negative-Nellyness is just...mwah~ It is marvelous. The incompleteness of your empathy, and the hollow shell of your community spirit is what modern day lack of accountability is all about.
