"So… what now?" Astrid asked after a few more moments of silence. Hiccup shrugged, feeling nervous. Bing Bong just listened quietly.
"Hiccup, your final exam is tomorrow, you know you're gonna have to kill a—!" She halted, for a low growl came from the distance; the call of the Queen. Despite being banished, Bing Bong was still unable to resist her hypnotic calls to her presence.
"Toothless? What's happening?! Toothless—!" Hiccup called out, he and Astrid holding on tight to his saddle.
Come… come to me… crooned the evil lulling voice of his old queen. It pulled him towards that familiar fog bank; nearly running into a Nightmare, making him roar out, the Nightmare ignoring him though, focusing on its mission to bring food to his Majesty.
Bing Bong felt his nerves rise to an all time high, as even more voices rang through the air, other dragons, a whole hive's worth surrounded the trio, all carrying food in their sharp talons or teeth. He gulped quietly, it was feeding time for the Alpha.
"What's going on?" Whimpered Astrid.
"I dunno. Toothless, you gotta get us outta here, Bud," Hiccup tried, but Bing Bing shook him off. Not meanly, mostly because he was trying to rid the sound of the Queen's call.
Eventually, the intimidating volcano of the Dragon Nest came into view, as the herd of dragons and Bing Bong all flew inside, revealing the many nests of the dragons in the smaller caves and ledges above the pit where the Queen slept, awaiting her meal.
Bing Bong made sure to keep himself hidden behind a pillar, crouching down, shivering all over, watching the others dropping their prey into the hole.
"Well it is nice to know that all of our food is being dumped down a hole…" Hiccup muttered. But the Imaginary Friend knew this was no laughing matter, small sweat protruding through his scales, suddenly spotting a lone Gronckle fly in clumsily.
It opened its mouth; and a small fish fell down. The Gronckle scratched it's shoulder, pleased with itself, but Bing Bong continued to shiver, knowing what was awaiting this poor Gronckle.
He had witnessed this monstrosity before; a Terrible Terror once failed to fetch food for her, and the Queen shocked Bing Bong by eating him.
"Why did she eat that Terror?!" He had asked Ashia, who looked solemn and maybe a bit scared herself.
"It is another punishment for those who fail to bring food. We all try to find a way to please her Majesty."
But this was wrong in Bing Bong's eyes. "No… I-I don't like this. Even if I have to stay here, no dragon should be punished like this!" He protested. Ashia put a wing around him.
"Don't fear, young one. Her Majesty will not do anything to you if you stay with me." He then nodded.
"Yeah, o- okay."
He was snapped from his flashback, hearing the Queen's terrible roar. She had smelled them.
"NIGHT FURY…." She bellowed. Bing Bong felt frozen in place, eyes popping in fear, finding himself staring into her demon gaze. She bared her huge teeth.
Hiccup put a hand on Bing Bong's head. "Alright, Bud, we gotta get out of here… Now!"
This pulled Bing Bong from his fear trance, raising his wings, barely avoiding those terrible fangs that almost chomped them to pieces. He flew out as fast as he could, closing his ears to block out the hypnotic call of the Queen, desperate to get far away as possible.
…
They landed safely in the cove, Bing Bong sighed in relief after putting as much distance from that terrible Dragon Nest, slightly shivery, his human friends climbing down off his back.
"No, no! It totally makes sense; it's like a giant beehive! They're the workers and that was their Queen, it controls them!" Astrid claimed. "Let's get your dad!" Hiccup grabbed her arm while Bing Bong just stayed near the water, drinking quietly, hoping to forget that Queen's terrible calls.
"Wait! Not- not yet. They'll kill Toothless. Astrid, we need to think through this carefully," Hiccup said in desperation. Astrid was appalled.
"Uh, Hiccup, we just discovered the dragon's nest! The thing that we've been after since Vikings first sailed here! And- and you want to keep it a secret? To protect your pet dragon?! Are you serious?!" She ranted.
Hiccup was silent for a bit, glancing at Bing Bong, then turning back to the blonde. "Yes," he said simply, narrowing his eyes. That somehow won Astrid over; making her sigh.
"Alright, then. So what will we do?"
"Just give me 'till tomorrow. I'll figure something out… I hope…"
Astrid gave him a gentle gaze. "Okay."
then punched his arm. "That's for kidnapping me," she said. Hiccup rubbed his arm, staring at her in disbelief and looked to Bing Bong for help, who just shook his head and kept drinking. Don't look at me.
But then Astrid did a surprising move; kissing Hiccup on the cheek. She pushed her own hair out of her eyes, blushing. "And- and that was for… everything else," she whispered softly before leaving.
Hiccup stared in a complete daze. Bing Bong chuckled silently, coming up next to his friend, nudging him and wolf whistling. The skinny boy pushed him.
"And what are you looking at?"
Bing Bong looked innocent. "Oh, uh, just whistling for fun!" He said innocently. But then he gazed at the 'audience', smirking knowingly.
"He digs her."
"I heard that!"
