Link, Lumine, and Paimon slowly peeked behind the tree as they saw their target.
"WHOA!? THAT'S THE BIGGEST HORs-" Link quickly covered Paimon's mouth, and the two blondes hid back behind the tree.
"Shhh!" Lumine silenced her companion before Link took his Sheika Slate and pointed it out of their hiding spot.
From the screen, they could see that the giant black horse grazing in the nearby area. It looked like Paimon didn't spook it yet.
"Those scholars said it was big, but that's like three times Link's size and five times Lumine's!" Paimon half-shouted and half-whispered.
The Traveler folded her arms and narrowed her eyes. However, Link just shrugged as it was indeed accurate.
"So, how are we going to bring it over to those guys?" Paimon asked the blondes.
Lumine raised her brow. However, Link started to down a stamina potion before he started climbing the tree they were hiding behind.
"I hate it when Link comes up with the plan. It usually involves explosions and a lot of arrows." Paimon whined.
Yet, Lumine climbed after her traveling companion. When the two got up to the large tree, Link looked ready to jump off. However, Lumine stopped him.
"I want to try and tame the horse," Lumine said. "You tamed the last two. I know what to do this time."
The first time the two tried to get horses, Lumine was thrown off each wild horse that she tried to calm down. It was not a pleasant experience for her back or bum.
Link looked down before he held his head. The way Lumine looked at him made him think of an image of someone younger than the girl... one with ears like him, but he could never recall...
He shook his head before reluctantly giving her a stamina potion. Lumine smiled as she took the bottle and drank it whole. Paimon stayed behind as the Traveler flew with her gliding wings.
And she landed right on top of the giant, black horse.
Lumine felt pride.
... For about one second before her entire world started to blur.
The next thing Lumine knew was darkness.
When she opened her eyes, she found herself in a field of flowers. The flowers were small, white, and looked so familiar to her.
"Here," A voice to her right said. "If you like it so much, you should keep one." The familiar person placed the flower on her hair, where it stayed ever since.
"Is it alright, Aether?" Lumine found herself asking her brother.
"Yes. After all, not everything lasts, even us." The sky started to turn dark, the world shook as if it was in pain, but even as thunder struck, Aether continued to give such a sad smile to his sister.
"Aether!" Lumine tried to reach for her brother, but the earth opened up and made him fall into the darkness. "AETHER!?"
...
Lumine opened her eyes again. It was night, and she was sleeping on a pile of mushrooms used as pillows with a giant leaf to cover her.
She looked to her left and saw Link watching the campfire with Paimon and Ivan sleeping soundly next to each other.
When Link saw she was awake, he offered her another potion.
Lumine did not like being coddled. But the pain in her head made her swallow the potion and her pride. However, afterward, she realized that there were bandages on her head. Not her flower-
Again, without a word, Link handed the flower back to Lumine. She greatly appreciated how delicately he handed it back to her as well.
She took the flower back faster than she meant to. "Sorry. Thanks for taking care of me. What about the Horse?"
She watched Link glance over. Lumine was surprised that the black horse was nearby, eating a pile of apples that no doubt came from Link's magical pockets.
So Link took care of her and tamed the savage horse.
"Next time," Link spoke up. "I'm teaching you how to properly ride a horse."
"I-I can ride a horse!"
Link just stared at her before looking at the bandages on her head.
"You have amnesia!" Lumine tried to defend. How could someone with amnesia teach?
Link, without looking away from Lumine, reached for the head of the giant horse and petted it. The horse didn't react, but even a blind person could see the knight's point. Just because Link forgot how, never meant his body did. (And he was still a master rider despite amnesia, so he was the best teacher for it.)
For someone who was so silent, Lumine was surprised at how convincing Link could be sometimes.
"Alright," Lumine relented. "But we're practicing on him! ... Have you named him yet?"
Link shook his head.
"Hmm," Lumine looked between the Horse and Link. Perhaps her head was hurting more than she thought because every now and again she kept confusing Link with Aether? She shook her head. Sure the two were worry-warts, good with a sword, and blonde, but the similarities ended there. "How about Rehthea?"
Link thought about it. "Aryll?" He counter-offered.
"I like my name better," Lumine responded.
Link raised his brow. And Lumine understood enough about Link's expressions to know that he didn't believe her name was better.
The two would bicker about the name for the rest of the night. (Well, more of a monologue from Lumine with rare but convincing one-sentence responses.)
However, for the first time in months, Lumine felt like she was home. Their bickering (if it could be called that) reminded Lumine of all the good times she had with her brother Aether. Similarly, Link could always feel a sense of familiarity with how Lumine wanted to prove herself, like a little sibling wanting to be just as cool as the adults.
Perhaps it was for the best the Knight could not recall his family, and by proxy, recall what he had forever lost. So instead, the night passed as a Sister, who lost her brother, talked with a Brother, who forgot his sister.
"Since you two can't decide," An annoyed Paimon would say later that morning, "We'll call him Emergency Food!"
Emergency Food chomped on Paimon.
After witnessing Paimon's attempts to shift her rank in the party to someone else, Ivan offered, "How about Black Lion? He really doesn't look like a horse to me."
Black Lion still decided not to let go of chomping on Paimon.
{Author Notes.}
Wow. Thank you, derricfoo0. I was surprised to see all those ideas you listed down.
So far, all I liked was the horse/Master Cycle one, but I didn't feel quite right to give Link an end-game item yet. Instead, I thought it would be fun if the two would try and tame that huge horse. And then I started to remember that Link from Breath of the Wild might have had a little sister just like Wind Waker. This means there's potential in Link and Lumine's friendship being built on both losing their siblings. (You can see the references to the other's sibling through the names. And Black Lion is Loosely Based on Red Lion from Wind Waker.)
Fun facts: Link tamed two Horses for him and the Traveler. One is Epona because, of course, those two are inseparable. The other is a blue horse named Cobalt, basically the main horse in my first Play Through in Breath of the Wild. (He had great stats!)
Anyway, thanks for reading. I do love the ideas you guys shoot out.
