I watched Death Knell last night and could not get this little add-on out of my head. I had to put pen to paper and share it with you. I'm setting this within my Sacrifice series. For now, it's just a short one-shot. (Not beta'd. All mistakes are mine).
"C'mere," the softly whispered, yet familiar invitation broke her like nothing else had that day.
Sam half-collapsed against Jack's shoulder, the horrors of the day washing over her, filling her with emotions she didn't want to feel. She had barely survived Anubis' Kull warrior. If not for Teal'c and her CO's perfect timing, she'd be dead. She should be dead.
As if reading her mind, she felt a tremor run through Jack's body; the arm around her shoulders tightening. As horrible as today had been for her, it had to have been hard for him, too. It was well known that neither one did well when the other went missing.
"I—" Sam tried to tell him she was okay, to offer some sort of reassurance, but her voice broke. A single sob escaped before her teeth clicked shut and she buried her head against his chest. Weak she chided herself, desperately trying to prevent the hot tears from falling. Her body shook as the adrenaline rapidly leeched away, stripping away any hope of concealing the true depth of her anguish.
"You survived, Sam. You're safe," Jack whispered to her, his body shifting so he could cup the back of her head with his other hand. His fingers rubbed soothing circles at the base of her skull.
His voice had taken on the gentler, deeper tone he reserved for their times spent in each other's arms. The times when they were simply Sam and Jack. Partners. Lovers.
His use of her name, whispered in this tone, crumbled the minimal defenses she had left. Ignoring their promise to maintain a professional distance while off-world, she pressed herself further into his embrace and gripped the back of his neck. The world dropped away as she allowed herself to find comfort in the arms of the man she loved and trusted more than anyone else.
She felt him move, heard him say something to Teal'c, but didn't comprehend what was happening as he lifted her into his arms. The world spun and her vision dimmed; a telltale sign of the shock overtaking her body. But she didn't care. Jack was here and she trusted her Colonel to keep her safe
