"He runs, wishing he could fly"
It's early morning before his endless grueling day begins. He's running on the treadmill - it's now the story of his life.
He needs the exercise, he'll spend the rest of the day sitting on his ass.
When he was young he wanted to fly. They put him in a plane only to shove him out with a parachute for an all expense paid tropical vacation to do their dirty work in Southeast Asia.
He did learn to fly and loved it - the exhilaration, the freedom, the sheer joy.
Now he was flying a desk, more like chained to it.
"Only to trip at the sound of good-bye"
He thought of what Carter said - he should take the job in case they got someone worse. He missed his footing and almost fell. Good thing no one else was here to see their commander fall on his ass. If he did fall - fail - the people under his command would suffer.
Her words and her abandonment cut. He supposed his had as well.
"He waits...and wonders
At the empty place inside"
He misses going through the gate - the adventure, the team comradery, his team. The distance he must hold them in order to be the commander to all at the SGC is eviscerating. He has other friends but no time. Walter and paperwork and politicians are his constant companions.
"He worries
Did he hear a good-bye?
Or even hello?"
He knew it was wrong from the get go but feelings are not against regulations - actions are. Was he totally mistaken, was it always one sided? The more fool he.
He once admitted that he'd rather die than lose her. She, the loyal Lt. Col. Carter, isn't lost, maybe he is, but the chasm between them is insurmountable.
"Confusion has its costs"
It's her own damn fault. Ambiguous questions get confusing non-answers, especially from him. She wanted to know if he still loved her. She wanted him to tell her what to do. She wanted clarity. And he either said he wouldn't be in the same room as her or he wouldn't be looking at another man's ring.
"She is lost
And choking on hello"
Sam stands on his deck looking at Kerry Johnson walk out the sliding door dishes in hand.
"Wordlessly watching
He waits by the window"
Jack looks on as Sam holds her father's hand. With his dying words Jacob encourages her to find her heart's desire.
"Love isn't lying"
In a moment of truth, to themselves and to each other, they know their lives are forever entwined in love and commitment.
