Since Klaus and Rebekah were the only ones who could go out and actually get things done, knowing where to go and who to see, that left Hayley and I alone in the house. "So, how do you feel?" Hayley asked as she walked around outside with me, following me as I set up a border alert to let me know whenever someone crossed over as well as a few protective spells.
"Okay, I guess. I don't really feel pregnant except for some dizziness every now and again, but that might just be the spell. I'm more tired than I ever thought I'd be in my life, I can feel the constant circulation of my magic focusing on this spot so I guess I can't deny that it worked." I told her, touching my stomach where her child was snoozing away and growing second by second. "Do you have any plans yet? I mean, you're not linked anymore and you've safely passed on the life of your baby to someone else. What's next for you?"
"I'm not going anywhere until I know Elijah is safe. He was kind to me, I want to know that he's okay." Hayley said to me as I paused and grew a few patches of vervain to be used in case of an emergency.
"Elijah will be fine, we'll all see to that. I think that you like him." Giving her a suggestive smirk, Hayley couldn't help but smile and quickly look away.
"He was the only one who actually asked me how I was feeling about becoming a mom. I hadn't really given it any thought until he'd asked, and it was then that it suddenly hit me that I couldn't do this." She looked down at my stomach, seemingly despondent and uneasy. "I wish this really was your kid in there, not mine. I don't…I don't want anything to do with Klaus."
"Yeah, he can be pretty scary like, all the time." I agreed, continuing to circle the property and continue to set up the magic enchantments though it made me feel all the more lethargic. It wasn't too bad at the moment, but I knew I couldn't overdo it. In the later stages of pregnancy, I'll have more stamina to give my magic a real kick again, and I'd probably have enough in me for one good fight at a time before I'd run out of juice. It would be enough to fight my way out against most regular opponents, and enough to escape to safety. "But I can handle him, so you don't have to worry."
"How exactly do you…handle him?"
"Easy, I just threaten to do unspeakable and horrible things to him until he behaves himself. It's a work in progress, most of the time I just want to knock him out then make him sleep it off for a century or two, see if that helps him cool his head." Fancying some varieties of fruit rather than just apples, I began to grow several different plants just by the orchard, including strawberries, blackberries, peaches, oranges, grapes and whatever else I fancied. Once that was done, I had reached my limit for the day so I picked some fruit to eat straight off the vine, and damn it was good. "Here, try some. Druid specialty, we grow things."
Clearly impressed with what I was able to do, Hayley picked some strawberries that were easily the size of her fist and ate some, grinning as she told me they tasted amazing. Pleased with myself, I decided to head inside to rest for a while and find some other way to occupy myself with Hayley sticking close, choosing to read the book which I had now confirmed belonged to Elijah, and further affirming that she had a thing for him. I thought it was cute, and I couldn't wait to see Elijah's reaction to her when he came home, though unfortunately it seemed like we'd hit a bump in the road on that one.
Bekah and Klaus came back home with clear looks of irritation, Haley and I looking up as the door slammed and they came breezing in like an Original hurricane. "Let me guess. Marcel said no." I translated, lifting my head from the cushion I was laying on with my legs sprawled over the armrest of a chair. "And now we have no idea where Elijah is."
"It appears we may need an untraceable locator spell after all, sweetheart." Klaus said to me with an uncomfortable twitch, and I loved how it physically pained him to admit he was wrong.
"Sure, I can do that, but Bekah you look like you're desperate to tell me something and I know you well enough that if you don't tell me soon, you'll just explode so come on. Out with it." Noticing Bekah's impatient expression and her constant fidgeting, I recognised it as a sign that she had gossip she wanted to tell me and she practically groaned with relief that I caught on so fast.
"So as it turns out, the witch that fessed up our little wolf girl here to the vampires in town is in a romantic relationship with one of those said vampires. Even better, it's someone in Marcel's inner circle. What's his name again?" Frowning after having already forgotten the guy's name, Klaus smoothly supplied it as he sat himself down in an armchair he seemed to favour. "Yes of course, Thierry. That's the man."
"And our good friend Thierry has made it very clear that he distrusts us, dear sister." Klaus mused before suddenly beginning to think of something. "Which puts me in mind of an idea." I know that look. It means someone very soon is going to die, if Klaus has his way. "I think we need to have a little chat with our friend Sophie." Immediately I straightened.
"No way, she can't be anywhere near Hayley. If they come close, she'll be able to figure out that they're not linked anymore. You'll lose any advantage you've gained over them just like that." I snapped my fingers to emphasise my point. "Then we'll have every witch tearing at every ward I've spelled over this house trying to get to her and the baby, magic or no magic. Judging by their actions so far, they're very willing to sacrifice lives in order to get what they want." Reasoning with calm logic, Klaus made a gesture that signalled he accepted my point. I guess Bekah must have filled him in on the fact I'd unlinked Hayley and Sophie, the witch who'd linked them together in the first place.
"Is there a way you could hide this fact from our little witch friend?"
"Well…I guess I could perform a cloaking spell. It would hide Hayley from being detected, keep her safe, and Sophie wouldn't even know even if she was standing right next to her." Tapping my finger as I figured out the mechanics, I then nodded, now certain that it would work. "But why do you want to bring her here? What's she got to do with anything?"
"Because in order for me to begin the long process of crippling Marcel's power in New Orleans, what better way than to take out his right hand man?" Ugh, so typical and dark of Klaus. I shouldn't be surprised. "We can use his witchy lover to our advantage, and persuade Sophie to be of assistance to us under the guise of performing a locator spell to find our beloved brother Elijah. If my suspicions are correct…and they usually are," he added with a rather exasperating smirk of complacency, I rolled my eyes. "The witches are after Davina, who just so happens to be in convenient possession of Elijah. You see? Our needs conjoin, and it only makes sense to work towards the goal of retrieving what we want."
"Yes that's pretty clear, but what does that have to do with the girl who ratted out Hayley and her vampire boyfriend?" I pressed, turning over and getting impatient as Klaus purposefully continued to be cryptic about his plan which no doubt had already formed and solidified in his head. His smirk only deepened at me.
"Unknown to little Sophie, our real goal will be severing the arm that Marcel depends upon. Cap-loving and witch-consorting Thierry. We will persuade Sophie to perform a locator spell whilst Katie, Thierry's witchy lover, will be using a great deal more magic publically to break Marcel's rules. What better way in the hope of rescuing her one true love?" I stared at him flatly.
"You're a real bastard, you know that right? Why would you do that to people who are just…you know what? Don't answer that. I know you're twisted in the head already." Waving it off, I began to get up. "Do you need me to do a locator spell or not?"
"Not yet, sweetheart. All in good time."
"Fine. Then I'm going for a nap. This heat is completely intolerable and I feel like my hair is turning crispy just standing in it." Fussing with my already frizzy hair, I wondered if I could get away with using some magic to make it sleeker or at least protect it from the humidity. I didn't want to have any part of a plan that would probably end up with two people in love getting killed, so I kept out of it and instead, just spent my day working on a timeline flowchart of present and future events that I knew about to give me a visual representation.
Hayley came in to check up on me and noticed what I was doing, growing curious as I wrote things mostly in code or just cryptically so that no one else would really know what it was on about. "What is this?"
"It's one of my things. I can see things in the future sometimes. A couple of witches can do it too, you know, but mine is more prophetic." I said to her as I wrote down a few more details about Mystic Fall's future as well as the name Kai. From what I'd seen of him, he was a real psychopath and I'd probably have to interfere in that case, because he was totally nuts and was going to end up killing a lot of people, as well as unleashing a group of people that would literally turn Mystic Falls into a warzone. Vampire witches, crazy huh? Anyway, if I can take him out soon enough, I can pretty much undermine this entire timeline. I didn't really like the idea of killing him, because that would go against everything I'd ever stood my ground on before, but I think I might be able to figure out a way to get rid of him where he basically destroys himself.
Tucking that to the back of my mind, I visualised the entire flowchart before I then used magic to erase the ink on the paper, making it invisible so that only I would be able to read or see it whenever I wanted. "So how come you can practice magic without getting found out? I mean, shouldn't Marcel be kicking down our door by now?" Hayley questioned me as she sat down, still with Elijah's memoirs in her lap.
"My magic is different to witch's magic, which means they can't detect it. A witch could walk up to me and have no idea who or what I was. I'm guessing even with Davina's powers, she can't get a read on me." Leaning back in my seat slowly I stretched out, getting myself comfortable with a heavy sigh. "Being a druid sure has its perks. It's based on elemental magic, druids in the old days used to possess just one or two elements each, but since I'm the last one I got all of them. My ancestors passed down their knowledge to me, so our culture doesn't die out. We don't know if there's going to be anymore after I die. I could very well be the last druid to ever walk this earth."
"That's actually kinda sad." I guess so, but I don't really tend to think about it all that much. "So…how did you get involved with Rebekah and Klaus?" Chuckling softly, I began to recount the very beginning of how this all went down, how I'd started awakening my druid heritage the closer I got to eighteen, how I'd mysteriously driven to a rundown house where I met Elijah when he was impaled to a door and so on. Hayley seemed rather intrigued by how I'd come to know each of the Originals, surprised mostly by the fact that I openly called Bekah my best friend. "You guys seem to get along well."
"We function. Elijah and Bekah are the best of them, you're lucky you never met their brother Kol. He was a real sadistic kid. He even gave Klaus a run for his money." The news that there had actually been another Original who was just as bad or even worse than Klaus unsettled Hayley, so I assured her that Kol was now out of the picture.
"So if your ancestors had access to all this power, how come you're now the only one left?"
"Raiding, mostly. Wherever druids settled, there was always the risk of conquerors sweeping through and when the medieval ages hit, people started to grow real superstitious and anyone caught with so much as a talisman was hunted down and killed. There was a purging of my ancestors, we were persecuted like the witches, so at that time we banded together to try and help one another, but ultimately we just died out. Druids are exceedingly peaceful beings, we never took life or caused harm to others, that's why we were so easily killed. My ancestors defended themselves, but chose to die rather than kill."
"Is that why you have a rule about no killing?"
"Well, maybe. I guess. Mostly I just don't want to become a killer. The idea of holding someone's life in my hands then just snuffing it out…that kind of power trip terrifies me. I can't do it, so I won't. Though I'm not like my ancestors, I have no reservations about causing some serious damage or pain to someone who pisses me off." Turning my head to shoot her a grin, Hayley also had a flicker of a smile on her face. "Probably a little hypocritical of me but oh well." Shrugging it off, the both of us continued to hang out together since once again that was all we could do.
Klaus and Bekah were out again, putting their plan into action so we both went out back to sit by the pool for a while. I was enjoying dipping my feet into the water when Hayley suddenly seemed to be on edge, looking intently off into the bushes and I started to feel someone trip the outer barrier. Two people. Or rather, one person and a creature. I could already tell that the person was a witch, but the other one confused me a little. It was a werewolf, but it wasn't a full moon, so I lifted my head and watched as the wolf appeared, eyes glowing yellow as it stared at Hayley in particular. "You're not supposed to be out here." And here's our witch babysitter. Who sent her here? She's lucky I didn't fry her on the spot when she crossed the border.
"Who are you?" Hayley questioned suspiciously, naturally gravitating towards me as I pulled my feet out of the water and started to get up.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. I'm Sabine." She introduced herself, giving a friendly smile to the both of us though she was mostly speaking to Hayley. "We met. I'm one of Sophie's friends."
"You're one of the witches."
"Sophie just asked me to come keep you company while everyone's out. I didn't realise you already had company." She then looked at me so I lifted my hand in a small wave, introducing myself as Ophelia and she replied with some pleasantry or other. Sabine then looked to the wolf behind us, as it was still standing there in the bushes, far enough away to not warrant me being suspicious. "You know, it's drawn to you. The child you're carrying is part vampire, part werewolf. You and Klaus made something special." Yeah…except Hayley isn't the one carrying that baby anymore.
"You sound like Elijah. He thinks this baby is going to make us one big, happy family, but now he's gone and I don't even know what…it is." Hayley looked to me, discreetly glancing down at my stomach so I shrugged, not really knowing myself.
"You know, I can do something about that, if you want. I mean, find out if it's a boy or girl."
"I thought you couldn't do witchy stuff around here."
"It's not magic, just an old trick my grandmother taught me. Come on. You have to be a little curious." Sabine smiled at us invitingly and headed back inside, leaving Hayley and me to deliberate.
"What if she figures out I'm not the one who's pregnant anymore?" She asked me in a quiet murmur.
"Don't worry, I've already got spells placed around the both of us to throw off any witchy senses. Do you want to find out? I mean, it can't hurt. I can just place illusion spells around the both of us so that she thinks you're me and I'm you. It can't hurt to just try it out." Hayley thought for a moment before nodding her head. With a snap of my fingers, the illusion spell using dark and light magic switched our images, so to anyone else other than us, we appeared as each other. We followed Sabine inside where she had me lay down up on the kitchen counter and rolled my shirt back to expose my stomach, taking off a crystal necklace from around her neck.
She rested the crystal against my stomach and I shifted uncomfortably, feeling wholly awkward about this whole thing. Sabine then lifted it off and watched as it swung slightly focusing on it. "I think it's a girl." A girl? Oh thank god, at least the kid stands a chance at being more like Hayley rather than Klaus. Turning my head I looked over at Hayley in order to read her reaction, and I noticed that she shifted a little, hugging her waist and looking away with tension, like she didn't know how she felt about it. "No…wait."
"If you're about to tell me it's twins, I'm going to have to stop you right there." I said, already beginning to panic. There's no way I'm going through the whole childbirth thing not once, but twice. Klaus can deliver the babies for all I care. However, it didn't seem to be that, as the crystal suddenly started to glow brightly and Sabine threw back her head, her voice coming out in a low, disturbing chant which made me sit up quickly and naturally jump to cover my stomach with a hand, protecting the baby instinctively.
Sliding off the counter I quickly move away from Sabine, holding out my arm to bar Hayley as I then dropped the illusion before she could notice the switch, already processing the rough translation in my head. Basically, it wasn't good news. Not for the witches, anyway, because apparently not only was I carrying the hybrid baby of another man and woman, but one that would end magic. This kid really isn't doing itself, or herself, any favours here. What happened to nice, normal babies that didn't spell possible destruction and doom?
"I think you should go now." I announced once Sabine had recovered, trembling and shaking as she sucked in deep gulps of air. Still standing in front of Hayley with my arm raised to cover her, I stared Sabine down as I remained frozen in a defensive stance. "Please." Glancing between us, Sabine nodded her head and promptly left, picking up the crystal necklace she'd dropped and saw herself to the door. It was only after we'd heard it slam shut did Hayley ask me what had happened. "Whatever it was you two cooked up, it's not something good for the witches. We'll have to be more careful now, and since they still think you're the one carrying her…maybe we should come clean to Klaus. Word needs to spread that you're not the target anymore." Maybe target wasn't the best choice of words, because Hayley visibly paled. "Just leave it with me, don't worry about what happened."
"Don't worry? That witch literally started chancing something in a strange language and looked like I was still carrying a demon child from hell." Point taken, but that hardly matters right now.
"I'll handle it. Maybe keep this part on the down low from Klaus until I figure out the best way to tell him that I'm currently incubating his child instead of you. If you haven't noticed already, he and I aren't exactly on the best terms right now, so this conversation's going to be a blast." Either that, or someone will end up murdered. It's a fifty-fifty chance, really.
