A/N: I think all of us Moonlighting fans have been a little miffed in the past about the fact that we never saw Maddie and David together…not really. Not as a couple, doing couple-y things. That's what this story is for. This could have easily occurred during that ill-fated month. I wish it had… I was on vacation, sitting by a pool, when this came up in my head. Poolside Convo shows them being…well…almost like a couple, without messing with the grand scheme of things. It is my fluffy gift to you all.

Happy readings!

Poolside Convo

Maddie hid behind some large sunglasses and a book, trying to pretend like she was really invested in the storyline that she held in her hands. Instead, her eye kept on wandering towards the man who was currently wading through the waters of her pool. It was beyond her to try and come up with an explanation as to why he was still here. He just…hadn't left and she hadn't had the energy today to argue him out the door. It had been the same thing last night as it had been any other night over the course of the past three weeks: she came up with a list of reasons why they should keep their relationship strictly professional and then they fell into bed anyway. Why was it so difficult to refrain from any physical activity with him? It was an animalistic need that made her blush to the roots of her hair.

"Mad-day! Get in the water, will ya?" his voice interrupted her musings.

He was leaning on the edge of the pool, his head slightly tilted to the side in invitation. His hair was slicked back and drops of water were dripping down his skin, but she wasn't looking. No way.

"I'm perfectly fine right here," she replied haughtily, not glancing up from her book.

"Well, you look a little flushed. The sun is hot today, Maddie. I can put some lotion on you if you want?"

She just knew he was throwing her a flirtatious smirk without even seeing it. God, he was relentless!

"No, thanks."

There was not a chance in hell that she was getting into that water with him. Better safe than sorry, since she knew that he was naked in there. It had been their first discussion of the day. He had told her that he wanted to go for a swim, and she had pointed out that he didn't bring any swimming trunks with him. His reply had been short and simple: "Who needs swimming trunks?"

Next thing she knew, he had already dived into her pool in his birthday suit. She had been left fuming. Hadn't she hinted that she wanted to be alone this Sunday? He didn't listen…he never listened, which was why they kept on getting…entangled with each other. Maddie had given up arguing with him and had tried to find something else to do inside of the house. However, the sun had looked appealing and next thing she knew, she had donned her pristine white bathing suit.

"Suit yourself," David shrugged, and he pushed back from the edge to swim a few more laps.

A nervous flutter appeared in her stomach as Maddie realized how much a lazy Sunday like this felt like something a normal couple would do. The two of them could never be a couple, right? They were like a square peg and a round hole; they would never really fit, no matter how hard they tried. So why was that man like a magnet to her? Why was it simply impossible to keep her distance from him whenever they were in a room together?

Lately, she had been wondering if that could be the solution. What if she left? Like on a vacation? Given enough time, these feelings would mellow somewhat over time, right?

The idea of not seeing him for a longer period of time made her heart squeeze painfully in her chest. She tried to pull air into her lungs to stop the sensation of feeling out of breath. Goosebumps broke out onto her skin when she finally allowed herself to look at him and a bolt of…something shot through her. It was then that she knew: being a square peg or a round hole apparently didn't matter.

She loved him….

A slosh of water suddenly washed over her heated skin and she yelped from the cold sensation. Her bathing suit was instantly drenched, as was her book. No sense in reading that one now.

"Addison! What the hell are you doing?!" she yelled out at the man who was the ultimate thorn in her side. His wicked grin was so big that it covered his entire face.

She took off her sunglasses, since drops of water were messing with her vision.

"I figured you needed a bit of cooling off."

"My book is ruined!"

"So? I'll buy you a new one."

"This was a limited edition!"

"Oh…oops!"

"Oops?! That's all you can give me? Oops?!"

"Well, it's already done, isn't it? I'm sorry, but I can't undo it."

Maddie got up from her sunbed and shook out her hair in an angry matter. This just added to her list of why they didn't belong together on lazy Sundays. He couldn't let up for one second! He always had to behave like a child!

"I think you need to go home."

"Maddie, I said I was sorry."

His voice sounded awfully close suddenly. She turned around to find him standing no more than two feet away from her, dripping and... well, still naked. Now, this was dangerous.

"Put your clothes on and go home," she told him firmly, before turning away from him to pick up her towel.

"You're kicking me out because I dumped a bit of water on you? You really are no fun, Maddie Hayes."

"Excuse me?!" Maddie whirled around to face him again. "Fun? What about you? Are you ever serious about anything?"

"Not about a swim in a pool, no."

"It's not just about the pool. You never think things through!"

He took a step forward and Maddie held up a hand to fend him off.

"You're being awfully bent out of shape over what was meant to be harmless teasing. What's really going on here?"

"Nothing's going on. You're leaving."

Maddie held out her towel to him, expecting him to take it. He didn't. He just kept on looking at her…daring her…deliberately provoking her.

"Take the towel and go, David."

Not one word came out of him. He held his ground.

"Fine, then I'll go. You can see yourself out."

She tried to go, but he stopped her. His hand gripped her upper arm and pulled her back into him. She wouldn't have it, though. She pushed him to break free. Unfortunately, he stumbled a bit and since he was still holding onto her arm, they lost their balance together. Next thing they knew, they crashed into the pool together.

Maddie's thoughts were all over the place. Perhaps David had been right - she had been a bit over the top with her reaction regarding the book. She had just been confused about her feelings. God, she was so confused about everything here! They both emerged to the surface at the same time and looked at each other.

David cracked a wise-cracking grin. "Well, at least I got you into the pool with me," he joked.

"I really hate you, David Addison."

"I know. You've mentioned that once or twice."

Maddie rubbed the water from her eyes and shook her head before swimming away from him.

"I don't know why I even bother," she mumbled.

"Hey, Maddie." She heard him coming after her. "Hey."

Right when he reached her, she turned around to slosh an enormous amount of water into his face. The look in his eyes was priceless as he stood stunned, water dropping down from his eyelashes when he blinked at her in utter surprise. A giggle tore from Maddie's throat. It was a liberating feeling to just not think for a moment and act in spontaneous glee.

"What the…?"

"You had it coming, Addison."

The surprised look disappeared from his face and was replaced by something slightly more dangerous.

"Well, guess who has it coming now," he told her.

He advanced on her in no time, but vanished underneath the surface to conceal what kind of attack he had planned on her. Maddie tried to get away, kicking her feet firmly behind her as she swam towards the steps of her pool. It was to no avail. He grabbed onto her from the side, hauling her into his arms bridal style. He stood with her like that, making Maddie wonder what he was going to do with her. For a few seconds, he did nothing but look into her eyes, making the moment slightly more intense than she wanted it to be. She gulped and tried to wriggle free from his grip.

"Let me go, David."

He raised his eyebrows at her.

"Are you sure that you want me to do that?"

"Yes, let me go. Right now!"

"All right, then."

She should have seen it coming with a man like David Addison. He let her go, all right… By throwing her far away from him into the blue waters of her pool yet again. She spluttered around, kicking for the surface in annoyance.

"You're a complete jerk, you know that?!" she barked at him, coughing up the little water that had disappeared into her windpipe.

"I do my best," David shrugged, showing her his sexy sideways smirk. That man was too cocky for his own good! He swam over towards her and cornered her against the side of the pool.

"I have some stuff to do today, David. You really should go."

"You said the same thing this morning and yet, here you are, lounging around by your pool. Yeah, you look extremely busy to me."

He put an arm around her lower back and pulled her into him, the position forcing her to put her hand on his chest for some distance. Not that it helped, not by a long shot.

"I've lounged around enough. Some things can't wait."

"It's a Sunday, Maddie. Live a little."

She watched as his eyes darkened and became unfocused. He was going to kiss her…

"Living with you around is a bit too fast to my liking," she bit out, giving it one last attempt to resist the charm that was David Addison.

"If you don't like fast I can take it slow…real slow."

His lips closed over hers and just like that, she was done for. Her arms came up to wrap around his neck, clinging to him in raw need. The line she had drawn in the sand was blurred yet again and her body yielded to whatever onslaught he could deliver. The water lapping at their overheated skins only added to the slow-burning lust that pounded through her veins. For a square peg and a round hole, they did this great. This was when they did fit, so much so, that it was better with him than it had ever been with anyone else. She wondered if this was where the confusion lay. As his lips travelled across the sweet skin of her neck and her body was set ablaze, she knew that the way she responded to him was more intense than with any of her other previous encounters. Her heart pounded so loudly in her chest that she wondered if he could actually hear it.

The straps of her bathing suit came off, exposing her upper body to him. Not that he hadn't seen her bosom before, but he continued to treat them with passionate reverence as if he hadn't worshipped them mere hours ago. His hands slid down her sides, taking the rest of the bathing suit with him in his wake. His lips followed suit, travelling down the same path. He went under water for a moment to gently kiss the quivering skin of her belly. Oh, how she always felt intoxicated by those angel kisses….

They may have been at a part of the pool where they could stand, but Maddie felt as if she was losing her grip. He deviously teased her most intimate of parts, and she struggled for breath while she desperately held onto him. She felt like she was drowning… drowning in her own pool of emotions, insecurities and worries about where this was taking them, only to come up for air when her tightly wound body unraveled for the umpteenth time with him. She knew he wasn't done with her, though, since she knew his lovemaking all too well by now. He picked up one of her legs to wrap around his waist and she held her breath, waiting for that moment when he would penetrate all of her walls. When he finally did, she wasn't drowning anymore…she was flying. She felt everything he was doing to her and then some. It wasn't just about his movements bringing her bliss. He was causing her heart to contract and expand in tune with his rhythm. She felt emotionally wrung out, and by the time they both reached their pinnacle, her body shook with the force of the sobs that she was trying to hold back.

His fingers delicately stroked her spine, bringing her back to a calm and peaceful state. She felt boneless, almost weightless for a second, as she was sleepy in his arms. He carried her out of the pool as soon as she started shivering a bit, gently placing her back on her sunbed.

"I'll get us both some fresh towels," he told her, before disappearing inside of her house.

She glanced back at where he had been standing moments ago and noticed that the shaking wasn't from the cold anymore. It was from the extremity of every emotion that was coursing through her. Because why did the man who made her feel this much had to be someone who was ultimately not going to fit with what she wanted out of life?

Maddie felt somewhat refreshed as she stepped off the elevator Monday morning, having finally had a night to herself for the first time in weeks. David had left a few hours after their swimming pool tryst, finally relenting on her statement that she had things to do. She had enjoyed a meal by herself, had taken a bath and had slipped into bed at her well-known curfew of 09.30 p.m. All had been right in the world again.

She hummed as she breezed past Agnes DiPesto, offering her a good morning, before taking place behind her desk. A frown crept across her face when she spotted a small package, covered in giftwrapping sitting in front of her.

Who had been in here, dropping off presents? She could ask Agnes about it, but she was sure that her secretary wasn't in on this. Usually, when an occurrence happened that was out of sorts for Blue Moon, the curly-headed woman would look at her boss expectantly and curiously. Agnes DiPesto was anything but subtle that way. No, her secretary hadn't seen this.

The thought of David leaving this crossed her mind for a moment, but she shook her head. He wasn't the type of man to bring a woman gifts, right? The only thing she had ever gotten from him was a single red rose, right before they had gone on their disastrous date at the symphony together. Other than that, the only other thing that man ever gave her was a headache.

She tore into the giftwrapping, unable to wait any longer. She had to see what was inside.

Her heart stopped beating in her chest when she saw what she had just uncovered. It was a book, but not just any book. It was the same book that David had ruined at the pool yesterday. A note was attached to it and she began to read:

Dear Maddie,

I figured I owed you a new one.

Had to do some detecting to get my hands on a limited copy, but here it is.

Happy readings.

David

A small smile broke out on her face when Maddie read his words. Oh, that man…

None of these characters belong to me. Not even the title to this story belongs to me, but I sure had fun borrowing all these elements!

If you can, please review!
