If you don't like 30 years before then that's fine, you don't need to tell everybody about it with vulgar language, there are underage people who read the comments and they don't need read stuff like that.

Secondly I'm not changing the story because some random doesn't like the story. Don't like it then go and read something else. Nobody is forcing you read this.

I'm writing this because I like it! Not for any other reason, this simply is self indulgent nonsense. It's a fanfic! Not something offensive.

Garp's POV

Garp was tossing and turning, his back was caked in a cold sweat, but whatever he did he couldn't wake up.

Where was he? He wasn't entirely sure.

On occasion he'd hear low voices speaking, though he couldn't make out what they were saying.

One thing he did know, was the last thing he could remember was the cold empty water dragging him down. That and he really needed to save his son, Dragon couldn't swim, he had to get to him but he couldn't because he was sinking.

But that wasn't the only problem, he kept being tormented by a memory that he didn't want to surface.

Yet it did.

Time and time again it would assault him and every single time he would try and fail to getaway. He tried desperately to claw his way out of his unconsciousness, however he couldn't.

The memory would form, a woman was sat behind bars, Garp was desperate he wanted to get her out. He wanted to save his beloved Maria!

Garp stood in the lift his feet were tapping urgently, couldn't this thing go faster.

Sengoku was watching him from the corner, his friend was there to make sure he didn't do something stupid.

This place was called Impel Down, it was the most secure prison in the entire world, it's reputation unmatched, nobody got out of here.

The person he was here to see was somebody important to him, no scratch that she was everything to him.

His beloved Maria, his wife.

She was always telling him not to do reckless things, yet she had gone and done the most stupid thing you could possibly do.

She had killed a Tenryubito.

Not only had she refused to answer a Buster call, that was bad enough, Maria had done the one thing that was most forbidden.

That's why the Vice Admiral was here, he had come to see her before she was executed.

He had every intention of busting his wife out of here, that was also why his best friend had come with him, to stop him from doing such a thing.

He really hated Sengoku for that, this was his wife! Couldn't he get that through his thick skull.

He didn't care about his position, he just wanted his wife. They would escape, grab their son and run! Live on a deserted island if it was possible, he was going to keep them alive, that's all he wanted!

When the gates of the lift opened he dashed out, running passed cell after cell, desperate to find his Maria.

Sengoku was close behind him, imploring him to slow down and think about what he was doing.

Garp ignored him.

He began to shout, call out her name, eager to find her. All he got in response was vile taunts from the inmates, some of these criminals he had put away himself.

The Vice Admiral didn't care, banging on one the cages loudly to shut them up, the jeers slowly started to waver, as he threatened to hurt them, if they didn't.

Then he spotted her curled up asleep in the corner of her cell. She looked beaten and bloody, it made his blood boil who was the bastard that had done this to her?

He would kill them!

Garp didn't hesitate, charging over slamming his fist sharply into the cage door. The door didn't even budge, he wasn't allowed the keys Sengoku wouldn't let him.

He debated beating up the man to take them by force, though he quickly and regretfully decided that it wasn't the best option, the Vice Admiral didn't want to cause a ruckus. He might actually get dragged out and he wouldn't even get to see Maria at all.

She darted up right, looking around sharply, then her gaze softened as she looked upon him. Those eyes made him melt at the knees.

"What are you doing here?"

She stood up stretching slightly, the shackles around her ankles and her wrists rattled quietly, she didn't look fazed instead taking it in her stride.

He slumped forward leaning heavily on the bars, trying to mournfully grab her hand through them, sadly his arms were too big and he couldn't touch her.

Maria smiled teasingly, however there was great sadness in her eyes. Her face looked all wrong she should have been smiling joyfully, it lacked what it normally did, the spark that made everything feel better in the world when she looked at him.

His wife shouldn't have been behind bars, it made him want to rip the door off, grab her and run. Take her someplace safe where they could all be happy again, where this problem didn't exist.

"What were you thinking Maria! How could you do that! You know what would happen..."

He cried out, a pain in his in his heart ebbed behind his rib cage.

"It went against everything I believed in, I just did what I felt I had to do."

She looked away , fixing her gaze on something he couldn't see. Then she turned back and smiled, it was small yet determined.

"We have to get you out of here!"

She laughed it sounded like a bell chime, he didn't think it was very funny.

"And go where?"

"Someplace far away where we can be together, where you're safe and Dragon can grow up happy"

He leant forwards again desperately trying to get her to listen to him, but she was stubborn, she wasn't going to listen to him. She never did, his wife had one thought in her head and that was it.

"Listen. The reason I did it was because you two were used as blackmail, they saw my ring and demanded to know who you were. They threatened to hurt you, threatened to kill you, what was I supposed to do? How could I let that pass..."

"Who cares I can defend myself, I can protect us, all three of us!"

She looked down mournfully shaking her head, then heartbreakingly, Maria turned her back on him.

"What are you gonna do? You gonna go against the whole government? you're strong but not that strong! You're a human Garp!"

She wandered aimlessly to the far corner of her cell, sitting down with her back facing him.

"Of course Maria I'm human! But I can protect you, let me protect you!"

"I made my choice and I'm fine with it, I don't regret it at all, you two are my world. For once let me protect you..."

Garp fell to his knees, violently bashing on the gate. He refused, he refused to accept this fate!

Sengoku placed a hand on his shoulder, dragging him backwards, yet Garp was to emotionally broken to react.

Why wouldn't she listen to him?

Why wouldn't she ever listen to him?

"No! Please Maria I can't lose you! What do I do without you! I'm nothing without you!"

"It's your job to protect Dragon now... I have a plan so please listen to it."

He didn't say a word, what could he say?

"Listen I want you to sell the house on Dawn island, I want you to leave no trace of me at all. If they find out where I lived they might try and destroy it. They'll destroy our home, Dragon's home. I'm a nobody marine, they don't have the information on me, like they do on you! We aren't officially married under the world government's law, they can't trace you back to me. They don't know we have a son, they will try and lay my sins on him. They'll punish him for my actions, they will take his life, destroy Dawn island all for the sake of a grudge they hold against me-"

Tears were flooding down his face, he couldn't stop them! Garp clung to the bars gripping them tightly, until they bit into his hand, he wouldn't be surprised if they were bleeding.

"-Dragon needs to live! He can't have a parent at all, you can't visit him, unless it's brief! You have to stay away from him, if you keep going to Dawn island that will draw their attention! They'll wonder who that he is, they'll question why you are looking after him! They'll find out who he is! When he's old enough train him, take him into the Marines, maybe they'll come to respect him like you. If by then they finally find out who he is, he'll stand a chance if they see him, the way they see you, then he'll survive. That's what the most important thing is, he grows up and if he hates us for it and so be it. It's a sacrifice we have to take, for our son! He's the most important thing, is he not!"

What was she asking him to do?

How could he possibly agree to something like that!

"If you truly love me then you'll do as I ask! I drew their attention on me, by killing that Tenryubito I saved my squad, having their focus solely on me. But not just that the both of you will be safe, so please don't let my sacrifice be in vain"

The man bowed his head, placing his forehead to the ground, it was cold and wet, but it didn't matter, nothing mattered!

Nothing except his family...

"How the hell can I accept that! I'll bring this whole damn place down, screw my position, screw everything else! My family means more to me than anything else!"

Sengoku was once again at his side, he was trying to reason with him, Garp didn't care what he had to say.

Maria was the only one who he had his undivided attention.

"You're the hero of the Marines, you can't leave the ranks if you do then you'll put yourself in danger, in fact you shouldn't have even come here in the first place! You should have stayed away, please just go..."

"Like hell I'm leaving! Are you happy just to leave us all alone! I need you, Dragon needs his mother, you can't just get rid of us!"

She spun on her heels, coming to stand directly in front of him, staring down from where he knelt, there was a watery glaze in her eyes.

"This is why I'm doing it, for you and our son! So stop being so damn stubborn and for once use your brain! How the hell are you going to get me out of here, this is a high security prison. You'd bring the whole government down around you, you would put yourself in danger, you would put Dragon in danger! That would bring shame to me, you would throw my sacrifice aside! GARP YOU WOULD DISREPECT ME! YOU WOULD TAKE AWAY MY PRIDE AND ENDANGER MY TREASURES! YOU, DRAGON AND MY HOME ARE MY TREASURES, MY LIFE, MY SOUL AND YOU WON'T EVEN LET ME PROTECT THOSE THINGS!"

He was frozen stiff in that moment it finally hit him, she was right, she was always right...

How could he disrespect her wishes?

That's why he loved her, because she was brave and foolish, she was the light in the darkness.

She was giving everything she had, for their home and more importantly their son, their dorky little 10 year old son with his goofy smile and his cheery attitude.

So he could live...

How could he disrespect that?

How could he take that away from her?

This was her treasure, her hope for the future, Dragon was what mattered.

Dragon was her light, just like she was both of theirs. How could Garp risk it all? He would do it for her.

"I promise you he'll grow up healthy and strong! I'll make sure of it! I'll carry on your wishes, I'll take it all upon my shoulders! I'll protect him even if he hates me for it, he'll live I promise! I'll make sure of it with my last breath I will protect YOUR TREASURES IN YOUR STEAD!" He cried at the top of his lungs his heart sank, it burned, it twisted and it broke, but it all formed back as a firm resolve! He would do whatever it took, he would protect everything that she held dear!

Tears cascaded his vision, he couldn't see, that was okay, his whole body shook with grief, pain, suffering but he took it! He would do it for her she was his everything!

He finally looked up at her, with a firm resolve. Garp was broken, that was okay. Dragon was all that mattered, Maria was what mattered. He would lock that pain away, he didn't care. His family was what he cared about.

"I love you Garp, thank you for letting me protect you..."

He felt at hand brushed past his collar, grasping it then firmly, pulling his face towards the bars and she kissed him it was the best kiss and the worst kiss all at once.

The last kiss he ever shared with her...

In that moment his world finally shattered he would pick the pieces up, for her. He didn't care, he would do as she wished, her dream was now his dream and he would carry it on.

He got up stumbling away, putting his back to Maria, turning away from the love of his life. Walking away into the much darker grief stricken place that his heart had already fallen to.

"I love you too"

The memory started to brake apart like shards of a mirror, pieces of himself, pieces of his past shattered.

A small almost distant promise was made between his best friend and his wife.

"Sengoku take care of him won't you?"

"Of course. Good bye my friend..."

But the darkness was eating away at that final memory, swallowing Garp up in the snapping jaws of grief.

He sat bolt up right breathing heavily, the lights assaulted his eyes. A heart monitor was beeping in the background, everything was blurry, Whites in greys blurred together swirling and dizzying.

He grasped his head, body shaking violently trying to get his breaths under control, he ripped his arm out in front of him, something was tugged out of his flesh, it stung.

He had to get up, he had to run!

Where was Dragon? he needed to find Dragon!

He was going to drown!

He tried to get up but somebody was trying to pull him down, so he fought back punching, kicking!

Everything didn't feel right!

Garp's side was hurting, a burning searing pain shot through him. That didn't matter! His heart was so much worse, it felt like it was being stabbed and torn apart.

He grasped at his chest, tearing at the fabric that was around him, he flung another fist out hitting something he didn't care what it was.

He needed to get up! He needed to get out!

The sounds of shouting echoed around him filling his head with thundering pains, it rattled his brain, he couldn't think!

He couldn't feel anything!

Everything was going dark, something sharp was in his arm, it didn't hurt but he was feeling rather dizzy all of a sudden.

The world started to break apart, blurring at the edges, darkness starts to eat him up.

He grasped at anything, anything that would stop him from falling into that dark pit again! He couldn't reach, he was falling, the void swallowed him whole once again.

Garp was lost to the world.
