Chapter 3~
Ink on Paper
"Would you mind repeating yourself, sensei?!" Tsunade spoke, narrowing her eyes at Hiruzen.
Hiruzen released a tired sigh seeing the angered expression on her face. He rested his elbows on the table and leaned on his desk, his hands supporting his chin and with a serious expression on his face, he began speaking "I know you heard me Tsunade. Please, try to understand my situation." He looked down and with a pained smile he continued, "No matter how much I want to deny it, he doesn't trust me anymore."
'Sensei..' Tsunade's eyes softened a bit hearing the hurt tone in his voice. Even in his old age, he was hailed as the strongest ninja alive, feared by all the elemental nations, and yet he was so vulnerable right now.
"I am quite certain he wouldn't be happy with the news, but, it would be best if you are the one to tell him on my behalf, he respects you a lot." Hiruzen finished looking pleading look.
Tsunade glared at him, clenching her fists in anger. He knew it was difficult for her to talk with Naruto; he knew it always reminded her of the family she had lost; he knew she desperately wanted to tell him everything and have her grandson back; he knew the only thing holding her back was the fear of Naruto going rogue and still, he asked her to do this.
She was furious, but seeing him look so vulnerable made her question herself... he wasn't wrong, Naruto respected her prowess as a ninja, and she can't just run from him forever, she had to start somewhere if she wanted him back...
She walked back towards the door and opened it, she looked back over her shoulder to see Hiruzen still looking at her expectantly and sighed.
"Fine I'll do it... but you owe me for this big-time sensei!" she spoke and crushed the door when she slammed it shut behind her.
Hiruzen sighed in relief after the stomping noises faded away in the distance. 'We need stronger doors...' he thought and leaned back in his chair.
'I shouldn't have to deal with all this...I am well out of my time...' he thought looking at the portraits of the old Hokage on his office wall.
Western Cliffs
"Do you think he will continue camping or will he go back to his apartment, Captain?" Crow asked turning his head back while crouching down at the edge of the cliff.
"Can't really say he seems to like this place a lot, but he'll have to go back to missions now, it would be better to move back to his apartment," Boar replied while shrugging his shoulders.
Both the Anbu guards jumped up in surprise hearing loud stomping noises, and the source of that sound seemed to be heading in their direction
"It's her, isn't it?" Crow asked turning his head towards Boar who nodded back in reply.
"Yeah and she seems pissed," Boar spoke making Crow gulp. 'God saves us...' both of them thought as Tsunade stopped in front of them.
"Lady Tsunade." Both the Anbu greeted with a respectful bow while sweating in fear behind their animal masks.
"You!" Tsunade spoke pointing at Crow who yelped in surprise and then stood straight facing her.
"Y-yes my lady?" he stuttered out trying to shrug off the dangerous aura she was carrying,
"Go fetch Naruto for me. Tell him the Hokage has sent an important message for him" She spoke and pointed her finger towards Boar who straightened up as well. "And you Yamato, bring me as many sake bottles you have, understood?" she asked tapping her feet impatiently.
"Y-yes my lady! but ...could you please not use my real name here?" Boar spoke getting a glare from her in return.
"My apologies, We are on it, my lady!" Boar spoke and dashed towards the tent at full speed.
Tsunade turned to see crow still standing there, stupefied with the sudden change in atmosphere. "Have you got a hearing problem and want me to fix it for you, Raido?" she asked in a too-sweet tone making him gulp.
Crow crossed his arms in front of him defensively and violently shook his head, "No! No my lady! I am on it!" he exclaimed and started jumping down the cliff.
"Damn scaredy cats," she spoke shaking her head in disappointment and then stomped towards the tent
"My lady" Naruto greeted Tsunade with a respectful bow. He raised his head and saw her holding her hand up, gesturing him to wait while she gulped down a bottle of sake, gesturing him to wait.
'Wow, she sure is a heavy drinker.' he thought looking down at the empty bottles on the ground.
'First, she used or real names while we were on duty, and now, there she is wiping out the last of our supply... What crime did we commit to having this? ' Crow thought, silently crying in the corner of the tent.
'This is not much but should do for now..' Tsunade thought and slammed down the now empty bottle.
She cleared her throat to get their attention and began speaking, "Your suspension is coming to an end tomorrow, there are some things you should know before you join back on missions."
She sighed and folded her arms and with her gaze fixed at the table she continued, "Team 7 will only go on D-rank missions and will only be assigned a higher rank mission when the Hokage seems it's fit for them."
'Well I knew something like this would happen, Sasuke is not gonna be too happy about this one...' Naruto thought and nodded signaling Tsunade to continue.
"You were not informed of this before, but, your team requested a replacement member... a day after your arrest," She spoke and looked up to see his reaction. She raised her eyebrow in surprise when she saw there was no reaction to the news. She was expected him to be a bit upset after she talked to Hiruzen about it., She lowered her gaze back to the table and continued, "The village elders thought it would be wrong to let the others on Team seven be restricted from missions, and the council agreed and decided to oblige with your team's request. A genin was appointed to take your place as the third member... he's gonna be sticking around for a while with your team on the village elders' suggestion." she finished, venom clear in her tone at the mention of the elders.
There was complete silence in the room as she let the news sink in. The silence was finally broken by Naruto, "I understand, my lady. Is that all?" he asked in a monotone. Tsunade raised her head to meet his gaze, a sad smile crept on her face seeing his blank expression.
'Why does my family have to go through this..?' she thought slumping her head down as a lone tear rolled down her face.
"My lady, is everything alright?" came Naruto's voice making Tsunade snap her head up in surprise due to his concerned tone.
A smile appeared on her face seeing the worried look on his. She shook her head in negative and wiped off the tears that threatened to fall. "Yeah, I am fine, I think I just had too many drinks," she spoke waving her dismissively.
"Kakashi should be here to take you to your team's training ground tomorrow morning and don't worry, he won't be late. And...I believe that's all." she finished smiling at him.
"Understood. Have a good day my lady," Naruto replied with a smile of his own and Body Flickered back to his training area with Crow following behind.
'I should have drunk more for this...' Tsunade thought and released a long tired sigh.
'It looks like Shizune was right, it is possible...' she thought
Boar stepped in front of her and knelt down before he started speaking "My lady, I have to ask this... this replacement genin... Is he.."
"Yeah, what you are thinking is indeed the case" she spoke and her expression hardened "Keep an eye on him, warn everyone on your squad too, understood?" she spoke and stood up.
"You don't have to worry about it, we will," Boar replied and stepped aside from the exit.
"Good, now I need to pay Kakashi a visit to make sure he isn't late tomorrow," she replied and stomped out of the tent.
With Naruto
'A temporary replacement my ass, the civilian council just doesn't want me near their precious Uchiha clan heir, and the village elders want the Jinchuriki's power under them,' Naruto thought as he landed at the bottom of the valley.
'Well, we didn't get along anyway.' he thought and sighed.
Raising his hands in front of him he formed a cross-fingered seal, and whispered, "Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu". In a puff of smoke, he was surrounded by thirty clones, all holding three kunai knives in each hand. The clones jumped off in different directions, some taking position high up on the spikes, others on the ground surrounding Naruto.
Naruto took out a blindfold from his pocket and tied it around his eyes, blocking his sight completely. He unsealed two kunai knives from the seals on his wrists and held them in a reverse grip.
"Do it" he whispered and the clones released a hail of projectile towards him.
"The kid never ceases to entertain me with his training methods," Crow spoke looking at Naruto deflecting and dodging the hundreds of shuriken and kunai thrown at him by the clones.
"Can't disagree with that" Boar spoke landing on the spike beside Crow.
"It's one of Danzo's,? isn't it" Crow asked turning his face towards Boar, who nodded back in reply.
"We'll inform the others in the evening during shift change," Boar spoke and sat down beside Crow.
"So Lady Tsunade left us with empty bottles to clean up, right?" Crow asked making Bear groan in
"Yeah, she left in a hurry saying she needed to pay Kakashi a visit. She doesn't want him to be late tomorrow." Boar spoke and slumped down at the thought of cleaning.
"God have mercy on the poor guy..." Crow spoke and returned back to watching Naruto train
The next morning
'I guess I will drop the scrolls at the apartment first it's a pain to carry them around everywhere with me...' Naruto thought and stood up. He Body Flickered away from the waterfall to a small shed he had made to protect the scrolls from rain.
He smiled when he heard a bark from behind him and turned to face the mountain hound.
"*Bark*Bark*" the mountain hound barked as he walked towards Naruto who was packing scrolls inside a backpack.
"Good morning to you too" Naruto replied and unsealed a piece of roasted chicken from a storage scroll. "Here, I don't have much but you can have this," he spoke and placed the chicken piece in front of the hound who gladly accepted it.
The hound barked again making Naruto chuckle. "Yeah, I am going to the village. My suspension is lifted today, gotta go back to doing the chores they call D-rank missions and earn some living for myself. Don't worry though I'll return back in the evening and we can eat together if you want?" he spoke and tossed another piece in the hound's direction
"*Bark*" the hound barked and walked away with the chicken piece in his mouth.
"Thanks, you have a good day too," Naruto spoke and gave him a two-finger mock salute after which he made his way up the cliff.
"Did you drag him all the way here?" Cat asked looking at Shizune and a sleepy-looking Kakashi.
Shizune released a long tired sigh and nodded. "Lady Tsunade knew that threatening to break all his bones won't be enough, so she asked me to come up with a way to make sure he is on time." With a too-sweet smile on her face, she turned towards Kakashi. "I just told him how fast can a Shikkotsu forest slug's acid burn his book collection."
Kakashi gulped and took a few steps back "Well, I am here now, so could you please stop threatening my precious collection?" he spoke and laughed nervously,
"Well, it's good that you aren't late, Snake must be here with him soon. We'll be following the kid everywhere even during the missions as per Lord Third's orders, but you keep an eye out too." Cat spoke.
"I would have done that either way," Kakashi spoke getting a nod back in reply.
"Good morning Kakashi-sensei, it's been a while." came a voice from behind them.
'N-naruto?' Kakashi's visible eye slightly widened in surprise as he turned around and saw Naruto walking towards them.
He looked very different from the kid Kakashi had seen 5 months ago. Naruto had shot up quite a few inches, he was about 5 feet and 7 inches tall now. He seemed to have ditched his orange jumper, and looking at how tight that black half-sleeved T-shirt was on him, he seemed to have put on some muscle as well. His blonde spiky hair had grown a bit, with two jaw-length bangs framing his face; his cerulean blue eyes now had a hint of violet around the pupils. No whisker marks adored his cheeks anymore, but surprisingly he looked more feral now with his sharper facial features.
"Try not to get in trouble, we'll be watching you," Cat spoke and disappeared into the trees with her Anbu squad.
"I hear you loud and clear, miss Cat," Naruto gave the Anbu guards a mock salute. "Good morning, lady Shizune. I guess you dragged him here, I mean I can't think of any other way he would be early," he spoke stopping in front of Kakashi and Shizune.
"Good morning Naruto. Well, you aren't wrong about that..." Shizune spoke rubbing the back of her head sheepishly. 'Why he addresses me as 'lady' Shizune...it's soo weird...'
"Thanks for doing that. I didn't want to be late on my first day back." Naruto replied with a small smile.
Shizune raised her eyebrows in surprise, 'Lady Tsunade wasn't wrong, there is an improvement..' she thought. Smiling back at him she waved her hand dismissively "You don't have to thank me Naruto, it's not that big of a deal." she replied.
Naruto gave her a nod and turned towards Kakashi. He tilted his head in confusion when he saw the blank look on Kakashi's face.
"Ugh..Everything okay...sensei?" he asked finally breaking Kakashi out of his stupor
Kakashi shook his head violently and looked back at Naruto "Y-yeah everything's alright. I was just thinking you have grown taller, quite a bit actually..." he spoke with his patent eye smile.
"You think so? I might have hit a growth spurt," Naruto replied shrugging his shoulders.
'He hasn't noticed that himself?' Kakashi thought and sweatdropped. "Yeah, looks like you did...Sh?"
Naruto pointed his thumb towards his backpack, "Can we go to my apartment first? I don't wanna carry these scrolls everywhere with me... these are quite important... for me..."
Kakashi shrugged his shoulders, "I don't see why we can't." he spoke and eye-smiled at Naruto. 'Why did he say it like that...'
Naruto's Apartment
'For fuck's sake...' Naruto thought standing in front of his apartment door, looking at the graffiti. 'I guess I should thank them for leaving my door intact this time' he thought sarcastically as he unlocked the door and entered his apartment.
'This isn't good...' Kakashi thought looking at Naruto's back. He was going to follow Naruto but stopped when Shizune placed her hand on his shoulder.
"We need to talk." Shizune folded her arms looking around with a deep frown., "Kakashi, correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure this place is...it's the-"
"You are right..." Kakashi cut her off already knowing what she was gonna say. "It's the red light district. So you didn't know..."
"Of course I didn't neither does Lady Tsunade...master Jiraiya told us that he got a safe apartment," Shizune looked down at the ground clenching her fist. 'We shouldn't have believed him...'
"It is actually the safest place he could grow up as a normal child after being thrown out of the orphanage," Kakashi spoke.
Shizune glared at him "Not exactly the environment for a child to grow up in!" she replied.
"The village elders wanted him to grow up in an underground Anbu facility as a weapon." Kakashi retorted. "At least he was away from the reach of those that wanted him dead and those that wanted what's sealed inside him," he spoke.
"Lady Tsunade would have leveled the whole village if she was here then..." Shizune replied and lowered her head... "When master Jiraiya came with the news she was furious and wanted to kill the orphanage matron. The only reason she didn't return was that we were actually relieved knowing he got a safe place to live" she finished and walked away.
Kakashi lowered her head in shame. Both of them waited in complete silence for Naruto and parted ways after exiting the district.
Hidden Leaf Village: Training Grounds
"So you can control it now, that's good to know," Kakashi spoke as he and Naruto continued jumping through treetops. They were doing so to avoid the public eye.
"Yeah I can," Naruto replied as they landed in front of the training ground seven. "Don't worry I won't go crazy and harm someone," he added They started walking
"What a surprise! Kakashi-sensei is on-time today," Sakura exclaimed folding her arms. 'Oh no... that idiot Naruto is back again,' she thought and scowled seeing the two walking towards them.
"Well, no one needed my help on the way today," Kakashi spoke and rubbed the back of his neck. "It's good all three of you are on time, as you can see Naruto is joining us back today," he added stopping in front of them.
"Hn," Sasuke grunted in acknowledgment while leaning against the training stump, hands inside his pocket looking at them with disinterest.
'He is just so cool,' Sakura thought while looking at Sasuke with heart-shaped eyes and drooling.
'What a warm welcome...' Naruto thought sarcastically.
"I believe it's our first time meeting," came a voice from his right. Naruto turned his head to see a pale-looking boy around Sasuke's height standing near him with his hand extended. He had short, straight black hair and dark eyes which contrasted with his translucent-looking pale skin. The boy wore a high-collared midriff shirt, black pants, shinobi sandals, gloves with his index and thumb fingers exposed, and a Konoha forehead protector around his forehead. He was carrying a small backpack and wore a short black-and-grey jacket with red straps and a tip-less tantÅ on his back.
"I believe it is," Nauto turned and shook the boy's hand, "I am Naruto Uzumaki, you must be the additional member,"
'Why is he acting like that? ' Sakura and Sasuke thought hearing Naruto's calm tone.
'Looks like lord third wasn't lying when he said his behavior has changed quite a bit. Well, this is a nice change.' Kakashi thought and eye smiled.
"I go by Sai," the pale-looking boy now identified as Sai spoke pulling his hand back. "It really isn't pleasant meeting a dickless person like you but for the good of the village I'll endure through it," Sai added and smiled.
'Oh shit, not this again...' Kakashi thought and facepalmed hearing Sakura snicker. "Sai, we have talked about this. It isn't nice to make jokes like that," he spoke.
Sai turned his head towards Kakashi and stared blankly, "But Kakashi-sensei according to me only a dickless person would attack a fellow shinobi and try to harm the village," he spoke making Sakura giggle.
"It's fine Kakashi-sensei, I don't mind his insults," Naruto spoke looking at Sai blankly. 'Especially one from the elder's puppets...' he added mentally.
'Well, that reduces my work, what a relief,' Kakashi thought and cleared his throat. "I decided we should get a D- rank mission first thing today so that you can all work on 4 man team formations, Let's go," he spoke with an eye-smile
"Try not to slow me down with you, loser," Sasuke spoke and started walking out of the ground with Sakura following him.
"Of course," Naruto whispered to himself and started walking with Kakashi. 'somethings never change...'
Hokage Tower
(Hokage's office)
'I hope doing D-rank missions will eventually make his situation better...' Hiruzen thought and leaned back in his chair.
His eyes snapped open as the door to his office flew over his head, 'Not again! I had it fixed just this morning...' he thought and sighed. "The village is going to run out of funds if you keep causing collateral damage like this, you know" He spoke and looked at the broken doorway to find an enraged Tsunade standing there with Shizune and Cat.
Tsunade took a step forward entering his office, her bangs shadowing eyes, "We need to have a talk Sarutobi-sensei," she riled up her chakra getting covered in a pale blue shroud, the windows crack under pressure and the Anbu guards took a defensive formation around the Hokage "And you need to call Jiraiya back, I need a word with him..." she spoke and raised her head to show her red tear-filled eyes.
'This isn't good.' Hiruzen abruptly stood up and activated the privacy seals. "Tsunade, I understand you are angry but you'll need to calm down for me to understand the situation, okay? " he spoke slowly moving towards her.
Tsunade clenched her fists and started to raise her chakra even more, 'All this time...I believed the lies and didn't interfere like a coward, not anymore...' she thought. Her breath hitched as she felt a hand over her shoulder, she slowly turned her head to see Shizune with a pleading look on her face.
"Please, Aunt Tsunade..." Shizune spoke and gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze.
'She hasn't called me that in years...' Tsunade thought looking at Shizune with shocked eyes as the shroud of chakra slowly shrunk and disappeared. "Shizune...I-"Tsunade started speaking but was cut off by Shizune.
"It's fine, we can talk about this later, we have something more important to discuss right now," Shizune spoke and turned her head towards Hiruzen. Tsunade lowered her head and took a deep breath, 'She's right.' she thought and nodded her head. "Tell him, Cat" she commanded and the said Anbu stepped forward.
'Thank god' Hiruzen thought and sat down in his chair. He raised his hand gesturing Cat to start speaking.
"Lord Third, as per your orders my squad has been following around Naruto Uzumaki," Cat started making Hiruzen frown, 'I figured it was related to Naruto,' he thought and nodded signaling her to continue.
"In addition, Lady Tsunade asked us to keep an eye out for the replacement genin seeing he is a member of the root foundation," she continued making Hiuzen's frown to deepen. "I assume he did make a move?" he asked.
"The root member going by the name Sai attempted to place an Enslavement seal on Naruto, covering it up with a handshake," Cat spoke and Hiruzen's eye widened in surprise. Before he could speak anything Cat continued, "The only reason we noticed it is because Naruto turned his palm towards the tree we were hiding on."
Hiruzen abruptly stood up, "You mean the seal is still on him?!" he asked growing worried by the second.
"No" came Tsunade's voice and Hiruzen turned his head towards her, all his worry replaced with confusion. "the seal is not on him anymore," Shizune added.
He looked at them with a confused look and impatiently turned towards Cat. "Explain, Cat," he commanded getting a nod from the Anbu in reply.
"The Enslavement seal is not the only thing we witnessed when he turned his palm, my lord,..." Cat started making Hiruzen even more confused. "We witnessed him break the seal completely," she finished.
Somewhere Underground the Hidden Leaf Village
"You failed on your mission then. "said the shadowed figure and tapped the cane in his hand on the floor.
"Yes, forgive me for my failures, Lord Danzo. He broke through the seal like it was nothing and seems to have reported it to the Anbu squad following him too," Sai reported kneeling in front of him.
The figure now identified as Danzo tapped his cane "It seems your skills have dulled over the past few months of being undercover." He tapped his cane again stepped forward in the light, "You will receive your proper punishment after the mission is completed. I don't want any failures in mission anymore." he spoke.
"As you command, my Lord," Sai answered and vanished into the shadows.
"Wouldn't this be a problem in our plan, lord Danzo?. He broke through the seal you designed like nothing," came a voice from behind Danzo.
Danzo looked over his shoulder to the person standing behind him, "If he can break an A-rank seal I designed, it just solidifies my belief that he will make a great weapon for me," he spoke and turned around.
"The Hokage might try to keep you away from him, what are you going to do about that?" the man standing in the shadow asked.
"Hiruzen is too weak to be the Hokage, his word is nothing more than Ink on paper for me. Tell your master we will proceed as planned," Danzo spoke and the man in the shadow vanished away in a swirl of leaves.
'Just you wait and see Hiruzen, I'll have the fox's power under me one way or the other... and then the whole village as well' he tapped his cane again and walked back merging into the shadows.
