Episode 3: The ODM Gear

As Adair walked into the spacious chamber, the chosen cadets stood up from their seats, letting the Chief wave his hand at them to settle down. The scene was that of a classroom; with a huge blackboard in front of the set of hundred chairs. It was the first batch of the military that was being taught the history of Paradis Island, and how they perceived the war to be originated.
So the chief started, "I can see it on your faces how determined and passionate you are about this attack. But ask yourselves - do you know what you are getting into?"
The class remained silent, until one of the cadets stood up at the back and loudly declared, "We're going there to end the queen and the heir of their throne!"
"Well, yes," Adair pushed his hands behind his back, "But what else?"
There was a phase of silence again, and he then turned around to draw circles on the board. He drew three concentric circles, and then turned back around to say, "Before the rumbling, there existed three walls on the island, which contained the humanity left on that island. These three walls - Maria, Rose, and Sina - were actually just about thousands of colossal titans linked together, as we got to know once the rumbling started."
"What were these colossal titans?" Hange questioned.
"They were a kind of one of the nine titan shifters that Founder Ymir led down. They were about sixty meters tall and had no skin on their bodies."
"How did Founder Ymir get to make titan shifters?" Connie asked.
"It has been allegedly said that Founder Ymir made a deal with the Devil itself to obtain the powers of the titans. We, as Horizonals, aren't exactly sure how. There are certain answers that we can only find on Paradis," Adair explained and everyone else penned it down.
"Coming back to the topic," he cleared his throat, "There were nine titan shifters that existed: the Founding titan, the Attack titan, the Cart titan, the Colossal titan, the Beast titan, the Jaw titan, the Female titan, the Armored titan, and the War Hammer titan. Who inherited these, and how, we aren't aware yet."
The cadets furiously penned his words down.
"Eren Jaeger. He was one of those island devils who obtained the powers of the Attack titan and the Founding titan... and soon enough, the War Hammer titan," Adair inhaled and exhaled, "Reportedly, he had a supportive crowd on the island as well as in Marley. They were called the Jaegerists, and they killed and imprisoned many, and supported all his deeds blindly."
Mikasa stared at the board blankly, taking in the words of the chief, and that was when she heard an unfamiliar voice in her head,
"Mikasa, I've always hated you."
She gasped, having a shiver run down her spine, and her eyes widened. She felt like she had heard that voice before.
Where was it from?
Sitting beside her, Sasha noticed her flinch, and rested her hand on Mikasa's, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah..." Mikasa gave her a tight-lipped smile, redirecting her attention back to Adair.
The chief explained further, "This man, Eren Jaeger, was reportedly from the series of the outermost walls; the district Shiganshina. Certain happenings led to his rebellion in the future, and he was the one who obviously caused the rumbling."
"Sir," Armin raised his hand.
"Yes?"
"Why did he start the rumbling?" the blonde questioned.
"Of course, he just wanted to destroy the rest of the world to make his beloved Paradis the most powerful one," Adair answered, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"That doesn't sit right..." Armin mumbled, "Why would he want to make Paradis the most powerful if there was no humanity left to be compared to?"
Adair pursed his lips, "I-I'll get back to you."
And he turned to look at the rest of the cadets and continued, "Where was I? Yes, at the rumbling. Before he caused the rumbling, he and the island devils attacked Marley on the same night as when Willy Tybur had arranged the declaration of war. That was an event where reporters from all over the world had gathered in the city."
"Who were those island devils?" Jean carelessly questioned.
"We have no data of their individual names or faces, but collectively, they were called the Survey Corps of the island."
Adair then unveiled a metal gear that had been hidden under the black cloth on the table. It had a link to a small cylinder of gas, and holders for blades on the sides.
"This is what they used to fight titans with. We couldn't exactly find the original gear, since they were all trampled on in the rumbling, but we remade a version close to it. It was called the ODM gear."
Levi's hands twitched upon looking at it, as if he could operate it right away. It was an odd feeling; like looking at a pen and knowing how to handle it.
"You'll all be needing some combat training for a few weeks..." Adair exhaled through the nose,
"And with that, you're all ready to invade Paradis."
