Chapter IV- An evening among friends
A bit later in the main lab
"Wow now this is something I would have never expected my whole life." Karmi started after hearing the explanation from both Hiro and Emma.
"Discovering something like this is out of ordinary for everyone even for me." Hiro added.
"And to think, only yesterday I was watching a movie on vampires, of course a Twilight movie that is surely out of context thinking that they couldn't be real and yet here I am talking to someone who is a half-vampire a dhampir." Megan commented in total amazement.
"I guess however that you already noticed how some movies portray them and I wonder what I the view you now have with this discovery."
"Between us, one would only have imagined to meeting someone like you, of course no one would have ever expected such a thing, that alongside the fact that by what you told us about creatures of the night, the supernatural and monster hunters. It really does shatter what everyone ever knew." Karmi said.
"I know and that is the reason why I tried to not let myself discovered in order to not cause panic and for others to believe me to be a creep."
"Well now with such laws you told us about, it is no wonder you didn't wanted us to know." She said before thinking about Hiro knowing. "But how come that Hiro found out about this from day one when you 2 first met?"
"That now might be my fault." Baymax said and the 2 turned to him.
"When I presented her to Baymax and scanned her he noticed the small abnormalities she got like the fangs and higher stamina. All in all it was only by accident; she wouldn't have wanted me to know right away because she needs to know if a person can be trusted."
"Well with such a secret, it is no wonder; you didn't want anyone to know. I mean having a vampire as your mother is really out of ordinary and who wouldn't get into a frenzy and hysteria if more people would find out about this." Megan commented.
"That and also to prevent people using your abilities to profit or to get jealous, my parents are very strict when it comes to using those abilities, they always tell me and my siblings to never use them unless we have to and try to never speak of them so we can live lives like everyone else. To not consider us monsters or creeps, this been actually a reason why I didn't made a lot of friends back in Europe." She explained looking a bit down.
"Hey." Karmi placed her hand on her shoulder. "If you want to know something, I was kind of the same as you were, also didn't wanted to socialize or make friends because people might try to use me for their own gains or because they considered me a nerd or even a freak. But it didn't worked well I do admit that I turned into the jerk that others had been towards me when I was presented to the opportunity of having a friend that share the same things and situation as I do. Of course you also have other situations that include the supernatural and the unexplainable through scientific means, but even with that I do believe you are probably more normal then others." She explained.
"You think?"
"Sure I mean I have to say that despite you coming from an unnatural environment, you are a normal person despite your issues. That and aside from the fact that it is amazing your mother is a creature of the night who married a human, if there is one aspect I have to say is that this is the craziest but also the most amazing thing I ever heard." Megan said.
"They say that the Dutch people are a bit crazy." Karmi said.
"You can say that again."
"Amazing is the fact that your father is coming from the Van Helsing dynasty of vampire hunters, like the husband of Professor Granville." Karmi said tracking Megan's attention.
"Wait Van Helsing?"
"Yeah you weren't here to tell you this, my father is Han Van Helsing respected vampire hunter alongside my uncle Ruben Van Helsing together with other 4 aunts and uncles and other relatives both directly and indirectly, regular and occasionally." Emma explained.
"One would say your father was a bit crazy for the decision he had made. Can't believe your mother didn't turn him." Megan said with a smile.
"My mother was actually a regular human however during a fire in a clinic and was injured, a vampire was nearby who entered in and had to turn her in order to save her life. She didn't regret it but sometimes she wishes to be human again although she does admit that the powers do have some benefits. My father however managed to gain somehow an artifact but it barely turns her for a small time into a human, a maximum of 2 days once a year."
"At least it is something, and if it wasn't for that event you surely wouldn't be here and to be honest, knowing someone who is a half-vampire and half-human hybrid is really the experience of a lifetime. And also having a friend like that is really a privilege." Megan said with a smile while the others started to laugh.
"All in all you never know what surprises one could expect in this world."
"Say that again." Hiro said before checking the time and to his amazement it was now 4 o'clock in the afternoon by all they should go somewhere thinking for a bit an idea came to mind "And hey how about we go somewhere it kind of past 2 hours already."
"Already!" Megan asked before checking the time on her phone.
"Boy didn't know how fast the time went and we didn't even left SFIT." Karmi commented although she couldn't say she didn't like the time they had been here.
"You know I kind of know a place that isn't too far from here if you are interested." Emma said.
"What kind of place?" Asked Hiro.
"You will see when we get there, but first I need to take my ring back." The girl said before Megan realized that she was still having the sun-ring, she placed it in her pocket in her trousers to keep it safe.
"Oh yeah forgot about this." She took out the ring to give it back to her.
"Still can't believe that you need this ring to walk outside in the sun. Since you said that half-vampires should in actuality be able to go outside without trouble." Said Megan.
"Problem is that I had inherited a milder form, not to mention the fact that from a research made by my father when I will turn 20 this weakness will disappear, till then my skin will irritate me when at powerful sun-rays. Trouble is that till then I will need another sun-ring which will only come next year."
"In a way, this affection that you got is similar to the porphyries disease." Karmi said.
"Not a hundred percent." Emma said going at the robot that was near the ping-pong table and with one hand it lifted the table. "I don't think the disease would give me those abilities now wouldn't they." Emma asked while leaving the three to gasp.
"Surely not and you are right about trying not to use them too much, because it really could cause hysteria or even jealousy."
"Those are the main reasons why I don't want to use them." Emma said placing the table back, immediately after that however she noticed someone entering the room.
"I really am glad that all of you are having a great time." Professor Granville said and Hiro and the other 2 girls turned around towards her in surprise of seeing her ignoring the fact that she was now wearing a pair of sun glasses.
"By the way it's good to see you here Karmi." She said with a smile
"I really am glad to be here professor despite only been a visit for the moment." She said shyly.
"I am really glad to see that all of you have met my niece. From what there is to tell you had a long conversation."
"It really was a pleasant surprise for all of us really."
"By the way professor how come that you returned?" Asked Hiro.
"I had forgotten some papers and had to return to pick them up." She said.
"Oh I see and by the way cool sun-glasses." Hiro said before the dean moved her hands to the frames.
"Oh those, it is more to rest my eyes from the sun today as well as not wanting to show something." She said while the dhampir girl went near her.
"What exactly?" Megan asked.
"They know about, you-know-what." Emma whispered.
"Oh I see."
"What is it about?" Karmi asked.
"I guess after finding out about Emma's secret she surely told you about the small treatment I had to receive from her parents some years ago." She said moving to the frames and easily removed the glasses which by all accounts made all 3 of them to gasp after seeing the dean's eyes. They were in essence changed from what they should be the sclera was normal but the iris was now glowing yellow to red and the pupil was sharp reptilian like.
"Wait, this is how it looks like when it is 'that' period?" Karmi asked gasping while Hiro could only stare wanting to take a seat but he accedently fell to the ground and Megan's jaw dropped.
"It is, and it is that period when this change comes out and stays around for a whole day once a year. It doesn't affect me with anything it however gives one enhanced vision." The professor explained placing the sun-glasses back.
"I never though there will be another thing that could creep me out today." Karmi commented.
"It was a risk and I have taken it, in essence the treatment really helped. As for the side effects I think I can live with them." She said before she turned to her niece.
"And you were ready to leave?"
"I was going to show them a place we talked about."
"Oh indeed, I hope all of you will have fun and." She turned towards Hiro and from what he could tell it was surely a sharp look, not needing to see her eyes. "Please do follow the rules there. We will see later." She said with a smile leaving them and went back to the car.
"Will there be any more surprises today?" Megan asked.
"Well if you want me show you a place that I talked about it earlier, only if you are interested of course."
"Sure, why not, after all this day is really like the day of none-stop surprises." Megan commented.
"Let's go then." Emma said and the group started to follow her.
Half an hour later
"Here we are." Emma said presenting the front of an old style Victoria building with a red sign.
"The Night Star Pub?" Karmi said.
"Didn't know about this place." Hiro said.
"The owners prefer to not give too much advertising but the place is really nice." Emma said.
"In a way I heard about this place, one of the officers complained that it is the bar where nothing is causing trouble." Megan said.
"You will soon find out why."
Emma opened the door for the 4 friends(Baymax been in backpack mode) to enter in a hall decorated with a red carpet and the walls was giving a twilight appearance at the next door that was going in the pub was a slender man in his early 40s with a dark costume, dark hair and pale skin having a friendly smile staying near a table with 6 boxes placed in 2 rows that contain cord badges.
"Welcome to our establishment, you must be first comers; before you enter I need to ask your age." He said with a calm tone.
"We are all above 13." Hiro said.
"Perfect." He said getting 4 cord badges from 2 box in the first raw, 3 from the first and 1 from the second "Before you enter please put those around."
Each one of them took their cord badges and did as they were told before entering inside, inside was an elegantly build interior with a red environment on the walls, that had several round tables in the center while in the margins were square tables where you can stay on sofas and in the center was a place where a band could play or recite different poems that was near the bar where a waitress also dressed in black was taking a break drinking a cocktail. The group moved to a place in the margins where they took their seats Karmi and Hiro on one side Megan and Emma on the opposite where there were already some menus placed there. Looking around they noticed that they weren't alone, there were several people here and there mostly teenagers and youths that were chatting among themselves. At least there were between 3 to 4 people at 4 tables in the margins and other 2 or 3 occupying 5 round tables.
"Well this place is really elegant I do have to admit although from what I can tell it looks more like a place for Goths he-he." Megan said a bit stressed.
"It is more a cover actually." Emma said pulling out a small round mirror from her bag and extended her hand to the other end of the table near the wall for the 3 of them to watch, Karmi looked towards the hall and back to the mirror to notice 4 people that she see at the tables one girl that looked like 20 staying with a group of 3 people at a table and other 2 at a round table talking among themselves and one male talking with a creepy Goth girl. But they are not appearing in the mirror.
"Wait, there are vampires here?" Karmi asked before the other 2 noticed this as well.
"Indeed and it has a special rule in this case. Don't scream because you will attract unwanted attention."
"We are trying not to; however it is kind of hard at the moment." Megan said with a stressed smile.
"I know it seems scary, but just look around and observe."
Megan alongside Karmi and Hiro were trying to calm themselves and started to look around and from what they could tell everyone seem to mind their own business, the vampire girl that was talking with the other group also seemed to not mind anything on the contrary she seemed like enjoying the company of that group, as for the vampire with the Goth girl they were actually talking about some poetry by Edgar Allan Poe and some poems they had written.
"They are just talking among themselves and interacting with others like normal people." Karmi said.
"Exactly, but don't let yourselves deceived not every creature of the night would do something like this." Emma said before each of them lifted the collar of their clothes to cover their necks.
"Yet from what I can see, they are very few vampires here. I thought that there will be many more then people." Megan said.
"Do you want to know how many there are in San Fransokyo only 12. Others are only passersby."
"And with almost 1.2 million it means 1 creature of the night for every 100.000." Hiro said.
"So few?" Karmi said really amazed by this new revelation.
"It depends on more aspects both population as well as how much sun is around the year, as well as notoriety. They must keep themselves secret like all other supernatural creatures that live in a city or area, as well as not allowing themselves to be discovered." Emma explained.
"And we know the reason why. All in all there has to be a balance between things isn't it?" Karmi said.
"Exactly, and do you know why we got those cord badges?" She said before each looked at theirs, each badge had the name of the place alongside the costumer designation, they were newcomers here but alongside that there was also the red letter H under it.
"Yeah I do admit why did we received it and what is with the letter H?" Hiro asked.
"H is for human costumer and they also got the letter D for dhampir and V for vampire, each had to wear it for the tenders to know who they are so they wouldn't be confusion in the orders. Because when it comes to vampires and someone orders a specialty it consists of mostly animal blood infuse with some spices to make it more exciting for them." She explained.
"And how do they feed from humans if they want." Megan asked.
"There are 3 kinds of bite; the one that turns a person by injecting the venom the normal one that is painful but there is a third one that releases an aphrodisiac which numbs someone and they don't realize it, used especially in bars and night clubs to people who get drunk so they wouldn't know what happened." She explained to them.
"This now makes me want to not risk an unhealthy nightlife." Megan commented although she does admit that her father wouldn't let her do that as well and she gives him credit for this.
"And you all wouldn't do it for sure after this, isn't it?" Emma asked.
"Hey even with that this place really is nice and I believe I will try the Red Stars juice, whatever that is."
"It's strawberry juice that contains strawberries shaped as stars with some cinnamon in it, you can also order ice if you want."
"And what is the Blue Moon Freezer?" Hiro asked.
"It is a favorite of werewolves and it depends if it is Blue Moon Freezer winter or summer."
"It's the summer one." Hiro said.
"It is mint juice with mineral water and lots of ice, the winter one is mint ice cream but very strong."
"What about the Bloody Cherry." Karmi asked.
"Cherry juice with ice and toping, plus mint bit and real cherries shaped to look like red cells."
"The Bloody Cherry then." She said already linking the cells thematic before the lights started to go off around them.
"Hey what is going on?" Megan asked she would usually not mind but in a place with blood drinkers.
"A small concert."

"It seems the supernatural really likes the night thematic and they really do have taste in music." Karmi said.
"Guess I can try to tell my aunt to do some small adjustments inspired from here." Hiro commented before everyone started to giggle.
At the Lucky Cat Cafe Cass had just finished doing the work for the day, in that day she decided to finish a bit earlier due to been quite hotter then she would have wanted. After finishing she was preparing to wait for her nephew despite evening not coming yet but the sun will be setting soon.
"Wonder what he could be doing right now." She said to herself before her pocket started to buzz, that coming from her phone.
"Hello."
"Hey Cass how was your day?"
"Diego, it was fine everything went quite smoothly. I am just waiting for Hiro come home."
"Hiro isn't home?" He asked.
"He said that he will go to SFIT to meet up with Emma?"
"Who is Emma?"
"Oh didn't told you, she is the niece of Professor Granville, a quite nice and cute girl if I say so myself. She gave me some new ideas for new food recipes." She said happily.
"Oh boy." Diego said thinking how that will turn out, it wasn't like he didn't liked what she cooks but to not be rude he wasn't keen on trying her experiments.
"And how are things between you and Megan?"
"We are fine, she just told me that he would meet up with Hiro probably met Emma as well. Really can't believe that Granville has a niece." He said.
"Really it was amazing for me as well."
"Still do you know where they could be?"
"What? Still overprotective towards her?"
"Not that much but some habits die hard."
"Well they couldn't be at SFIT right now they are probably in town I will call professor Granville to ask her where they could be."
"Do you want me to pick them all up?" He asked.
"If it isn't too much trouble."
"I am at the end of my shift it wouldn't be an issue."
"Perfect." Cass said before accessing the contacts to call the dean.
"Hello."
"Professor Granville hey do you know where Hiro and Emma went?"
"Yes they meet up with Megan and Karmi just before leaving." Granville said from the other line.
"Oh." Cass was surprised since she recently found out about this girl and asked Baymax and the others to tell her more about her and by all accounts she do admit that from Hiro's behaviour he really likes her in a very serious and high way, she would really love to meet her.
"Can you tell me where they could be."
"At a very respectable establishment."
"Well I have to admit that this evening was really something." Megan said drinking from her juice, all in all despite the more Gothic style and the presents of the supernatural one couldn't deny the fact that it wasn't a pleasant time.
"I really do hope that the time here was pleasant?" Emma asked.
"It really was, you really picked a very good place for friends to hang out. Although I can't let my parents know about your secret." Karmi said.
"I guess that event really is still problematic."
"You have no idea, all my courses were online including the one about programming. I was literally under house arrest, it took a lot of convincing to let my parents come here for a visit and to let me back to attend SFIT when it starts."
"So if they ever find out that vampires and the supernatural is real and you befriended one who is a dhampir, they will surely never let you out again." Hiro said not liking this idea at all, this might be the same if his aunt will ever find out about this and about his super hero activity.
"At SFIT much less especially if they find out that the dean's own niece is a creature of the night. It took them hard when Hardlight trashed my signing session. So this has to be kept between us and no one else." Karmi said drinking from her Bloody Cheery.
"You know this is surely what my dad would do if he ever finds out about this for sure and not mentioning that you probably got very bored in that time, been literally under house arrest." Megan said.
"Between us, it was actually constructive, especially learning about programming and working on the web series Big Chibi 6."
"Ohh, I love that web series, it really is great. I wonder, what the next episodes will be about."
"Well I still am trying to come up with ideas." She said.
"I wonder if you will do some episode with vampires now since with the discovery of you know what." Hiro said pointing to the few non mirror reflecting customers.
"I doubt it will be that great to be honest. Especially if most episodes are about facing high-tech villains and opponents" Emma said trying to not be the centre of attention now.
"You're kidding there are many reviews I had received asking me to do an episode with this subject. And since I met you who is a dhampir meaning a half-vampire, I could figure something out especially with some of the information you gave me regarding your 'cousins' if we could call them that." She said.
"Heh, between us some of them are jerks, and do try to distort some things if you do that."
"No problem, I just need to find a good subject to base the story on it. I could try the Twilight books, although I don't know if you or others from here." She stated pointing to the full vampires "see that series as offensive or something."
"The opinion is mix between many, the ancient ones that are over 500 or 600 years cursed the author but others don't mind, for now." She said.
"Well been ancient they surely are offended. But I am happy I don't know them." Hiro commented.
"I will figure something out." Karmi said with a smirk drinking some of her juice.
"By the way my little brother Arthur likes web series, watches them in free time." Emma said presenting her a photo and a digital made picture of them, the kinds and the father present in one but the mother only present in the next.
"Drawing on an electric tablet so your mother the full v-woman to appear? Good idea." Karmi said looking at the picture, which by all accounts gives her an impression of something supernatural with each of them.
"Can you give an autograph for him?" She asked pulling out a picture of the web series logo.
"Sure thing." Karmi said signing with her pen her name before giving it back.
"He will surely be happy for this, thanks."
"No problem and besides who is going to refuse a friend."
"Who's family really has many surprises to offer." Hiro added.
Outside while the sun was peacefully settling Chief Cruz had arrived before The Night Star Pub, he of course heard about the place it was mostly reported as almost fully clean of anything problematic. And by that it meant there were never robberies or anything of the sort aside from a day here and there where some would go to waste themselves in.
"Never thought I will stop by this place, yet I really wonder how come this is the most untouched by crime places in this area." He said to himself leaving the car going towards the main door where the same man was staying at the other entrance, it was a bit of a surprise for an officer came in his view.
"Good evening, can I help you with something officer?" He asked in his usual calm voice.
"Good evening I just came here to pick up my daughter and her friends I heard she came here."
"Oh many people came here with friends since we are in the program where we let the ones age 13 to 21 come around here." Said the man.
"You have different programs when you allow them?"
"During the summer vacation we allow them on Thursdays Fridays and Saturdays, sometimes on Mondays and so on."
"I see, well then can I get inside?"
"One moment." He said taking out a cord badge for him. "We allow only the ones that have cord badges; of course they will have to be return after the visit."
"Does anyone really have to?" He asked taking it and placing it around.
"We are a respectable business I only apply the rules of conduct." He said with a smile before the chief of police entered in the main hall and by all accounts he was, easily stunned by the decorations and some of the people inside. Many had normal clothes while others were more Goth.
"If scaring is the reason why robbers don't come here they do a good job." He said ironically before noticing Hiro with Megan at a table staying with other 2 girls at one table.
"Well I do have to say this evening was really a great one." Hiro said.
"Yeah too bad you will have to leave again." Emma said to the Indian girl.
"Hey don't worry we had exchanged our phone numbers so we will be all in touched." Karmi said.
"Can't wait for that Karmi." Megan said before the elder Cruz came.
"I hope I don't interrupt anything?" He asked tracking the groups' attention.
"Dad what are you doing here?" Megan asked surprised to see him.
"Cass had called and asked me to pick you all up." He said with a smile before turning to the paler girl "By the way you must be Granville's niece Emma?"
"Ah yes sir."
"Your aunt also called and said that she will pick you up at the Lucky Cat. Were you in the middle of something?"
"No we had just finishing I do admit that I have to tell my parents to pick me up as well." Karmi said.
Just when they were all preparing to get up a Goth boy from nearby started to recite a Poem.

"Edgar Allan Poe-A Dream" Emma said.
"Those really need a new life." Cruz murmured before the group went to the door and gave the cord badges before going to Diego's car, Megan was of course near her father while the other 3 in the back.
"Never though I will travel by police car in my life." Emma said.
"Trust it's not bad, especially if the ride isn't linked to a break in the law." The Chief said with a calm tone.
"I believe that no one wants that."
"Indeed." He said starting the car. "So how was the evening by far."
"Great, by many accounts really never thought that this small place could be quite interesting." Megan said.
"Sure if we exclude the small obscure stuff." He said with a smirk.
"It was obscure but it was decent." Megan said knowing the small detail he wants to point out.
"No one says it wasn't, at least I know why it's the place where almost nothing happens." The chief said.
The road to the Lucky Cat Cafe was market mostly by silence and the occasional attempts of the chief of Police to make some ironic gestures even if it was mostly to annoy his own daughter. However the group didn't minded this small pet talk even Megan managed to find ways to laugh time by time. That however, made the time pass quite fast when they reached the Lucky Cat Cafe where Both Cass and Granville were waiting.
"Here we are." He said with a smile.
"Thanks a lot sir." Emma said while she Karmi and Hiro were disembarked.
"Hey guys maybe you can come by at my house tomorrow for a talk." Megan said.
"Sure thing we see each other."
"Too bad I have to leave with my parents I would have wished to." Karmi said.
"I think I know a way to solve this, you can make a call and talk through Baymax." Hiro proposed.
"That I surely will do." She said before all left the car and closed the doors.
"Too bad I will be on duty tomorrow I would have liked to listen to what your new night loving style friend would talk about." The chief said with a smirk taking the girl aback, he might not be overprotective that much but sometimes this kind of talk is a bit weird.
"Dad I hope you don't have anything against Emma now?" She said a little annoyed by this.
"Oh no she is a nice and fine person but I don't think I would like the idea of making you adopting Goth style."
"Dad this is now the least worst thing she would do." She said a bit annoyed before they left while the other 3 remained before the Lucky Cat.
"So Karmi I guess that now you will have to leave isn't it?" Hiro said a bit shy to her.
"Yeah, I would stay for much more time but, hey we will stay in touch without a problem." She said in the same way looking at each other.
"Still maybe when you come around you can stay here for a talk." Cass said to her.
"Aunt Cass!" Hiro exclaimed annoyed now.
"Like what are your favourite food, activity and music alongside the relationship with my nephew." She said with a smirk to her.
"Aunt Cass!" He exclaimed even more annoyed and a bit embarrassed together with the girl.
"Sure I would, next time when I will be able to stay for more time. But till then I have to go." She said leaving now in a rush for both him and her to avoid embarrassing situations now.
"Seriously." Hiro asked.
"What, she is a nice and cute girl, not to mention that I do admit from what I heard you two really could make a good pair, or even more." Cass said teasing him.
"Mmm."

"Well then I believe that we should turn in for the evening now." Said the dean placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Yes aunt Grace, we see each other tomorrow Hiro." She said with a smile while she entered her aunt's car before they rode off.

She asked while Hiro felt a slight chill on his spine, by all accounts the eyes that appear once a month does give him a reminder what kind of family she got, and also it does remind him that he should not try to cross her anymore.
