Sorry that I have been gone for so long. College has completely taken over my life once again. Also, I was somewhat struggling with this chapter because based on where I want the story to go I wanted to make sure I had the proper transitions in play. Either way, I hope you all enjoy it.
Chapter 19
Callie sat in the attendings' lounge, trying her best to look over a few case files that she was asked to consult for. But her mind couldn't stop going back to Sofia. It has been a couple of days now and Callie couldn't get Sofia to open up. She even tried to speak to her in Spanish, but it was too late. She somehow lost her trust and she couldn't figure out why the young girl was upset with her nor why she cared so much, but she did.
She was jarred from her thoughts when Arizona and Mark came bursting into the room talking and laughing. "Torres, what's with the face? You look like you're trying to find out who killed your dog" Mark said in his signature tone where you couldn't tell if he was joking or just trying to be an ass. Arizona nudged him with her elbow as she made her way over to where Callie is sitting. "Are you ok?" she asked, lightly placing her hand on Callie's knee. Callie looked over and gave her a reassuring peck on the lips before closing up her files. "Yeah, I just have a lot on my mind with these cases is all",
Arizona nodded her head, even though she knew exactly what was wrong with Callie. She's been avoiding talking about Sofia for the past two days except for when Callie would go back and do an assessment check on her.
"You know, the case with the foster kid, Sofia, uh she's being discharged today. The social worker is bringing her to a group home for now. I looked it up and it seems like a decent place. Great reviews and very reputable workers," Arizona said hoping to get some type of response out of Callie.
Callie just poured herself a cup of coffee before making her way to the door. "That's really good," was all she said in reply.
"I'm sure she would like to see you before she leaves. She seemed to have made a connection with you that first day" Arizona said standing up and walking over to her girlfriend.
"I don't really have the time. I need to get to these other cases. I'll see you later," she said quickly making her way out the door before Arizona could convince her to change her mind.
"What is that all about?" Mark asked as he stood off to the side completely confused.
"We had this foster kid come in that was clearly a case of child abuse. But she just kept saying that she was playing with the other kids and got knocked down. The foster parents didn't even come in with her. Just said that they didn't want her back. The social worker opened a case up against them, but she said that there's a chance that nothing would be done. She started to open up to Calliope, but somewhere along the line, she closed her out too. I can tell that Calliope is upset by it. She never really handles peds cases well but this one really got under her skin for some reason".
"Are you sure that's the reason why she's upset"? Mark asked. He didn't mind having these conversations with Arizona. He has never seen his friend this happy with someone. He also liked Callie instantly. If there was anything, he could do to help he would do it, even if it just means to listen.
"Yes. It has to be. Nothing else really has happened that would cause her to be in a mood besides that" Arizona stated rubbing her forehead.
"Hmm. Well maybe she just needs some TLC. I say, leave work early and throw a special little dinner for her. But you, you may want to order out".
"Hey! I cooked for you two the other night. I thought that you really liked it" Arizona said sitting up and waiting for a response.
Mark didn't look at her as he grabbed his coffee cup and stood up without speaking. "Mark?!" Before he started walking, he simply said, "I pinned a menu to a really great Italian restaurant on your fridge. This isn't the night to experiment". Mark ran to the door trying to dodge the pen that Arizona threw at his head. "Let me know how it goes!" he yelled before closing the door behind him.
Later that day, Arizona was looking all over for Callie. Their shift finally ended, and she had an idea for the weekend that she knew would cheer her up. But for the life of her, she couldn't find her girlfriend. She knew she wouldn't have headed home without her even if she was in a mood. Right, when she was about to ask a nurse on the ortho floor she caught a glimpse of Callie down the hall heading towards the elevator.
Callie had a naturally fast stride to her walk, so Arizona was hoping that she could catch her while she waited for the elevator. She wanted to call out to her, but she knew that Calzona seemed to constantly be the topic of discussion and didn't want to add to any other gossip. But just her luck as soon as Callie pressed the button the elevator was right at the floor and people flooded out as she hopped on. In a desperate effort to not have to hunt her down again Arizona picked up speed and ran to the elevator, making it on just before the doors closed.
"Arizona!" Callie exclaimed at what she just witnessed. "I know! I know! I'm not supposed to be running yet. But I've been looking for you all over". Callie just squinted her eyes at her before grabbing her hand with her good one and kissing the back of it. "Are you on call this weekend?" Arizona asked excited for her plan to play out. "Uhm no. I'm not on call. Why?" Callie asked looking back up at the declining numbers. But it was this action that caused Arizona to finally take notice of what she didn't see before. Callie's eyes were red and glassy, it was clear that she has been crying. Arizona's heart began to race as she racked her brain to figure out the reason. There have been very very few times that she has witnessed Callie cry and they were for very good reason. Callie was not someone who just cried and especially not at work. She would take out on the discarded casts and plaster, but she wouldn't let people see her cry.
"Calliope what's wrong?" Arizona asked as she stepped in front of her, trying to get her to look into her eyes. Callie looked slightly lower to match Arizona's glance, always loving how slightly shorter she was. But she couldn't look at her for too long because she knew that the waterworks would start again. "It's nothing," she said softly. Before Arizona could say anything else the elevator dinged, and a couple of people got on. Arizona felt Callie attempt to let go of her hand. They talked about not showing too much PDA at work considering everything that has been going on; they just wanted to maintain as much privacy as they could, but Arizona wasn't letting go. Callie was upset about something and there was no one that could stop her from at least comforting her. They stood close to each other as the other passengers focused on themselves and their phones.
Once the elevator reached the lobby everyone made their way off. Callie started to walk off with the crowd, but Arizona pulled her back and quickly pressed the door release button before anyone could get on and hit the emergency stop. "Arizona, I don't want to talk about it right now".
Arizona turned back to face Callie and slowly walked her back into the wall. She reached and gently pulled Callie's face to hers. She kissed her sweetly and repeatedly, it wasn't a heated make-out session where their tongues searched for each other but rather kissing that allowed their lips to fully appreciate the other. "It's just me Calliope" Arizona spoke softly with her hands on Callie's sides and their foreheads now leaning against one another other. Callie kept her eyes closed, fighting back her feelings. "I want to take you on a date" Arizona said still in her low soft voice. "What?" Callie laughed as she wiped a loan tear. "Yeah, I'm taking you away this weekend. I think we both definitely need it. Is that ok with you?" She asked smiling knowing the answer. Callie just nodded her head as she finally looked into those perfect blue eyes.
"Arizona, you have been driving for a while now. If you just told me where we are going, then I can take over for you". Callie was completely confused as to what Arizona had up her sleeve. They have been talking, laughing, and even silently enjoying the other's company. But when Callie realized that they were driving through the mountains she had a plethora of questions that Arizona kept shutting down.
"Calliope, for the hundredth time, you do not need to be driving with your injured wrist. Do you want to make it worse and delay fully getting back to work?" Arizona knew that once they got to the destination Callie would be completely relaxed but, in the meantime, she was starting to drive her nuts. Yet, somehow, she enjoyed the fact that they reached the level of couple insanity.
"Excuse me missy, but you driving long distances isn't good for your leg either" Callie shot back.
"Calliope, you and I both know that driving isn't going to do any damage to my left leg while driving with my right. Also, I've been stretching it every time we made a stop. Furthermore, it's been almost a bit over half a year since the accident. My leg is alright".
Callie was growing antsier and antsier. She figured if she at least knew the destination or how far or close that they were to it then she would be alright.
"We have been driving for a while though. At this rate we probably should have just flown". The words came out of her mouth before she had a chance to realize what she was saying. Callie squeezed her eyes shut and placed her hand on Arizona's thigh. "I'm sorry. That was very insensitive of me," she said in a much calmer voice. Arizona gave her a quick smile trying to mask her feelings as best she could.
"It's ok Calliope. It was just a slip of the tongue".
"No. I shouldn't have said it I'm sorry. I'm just antsy and wasn't thinking clearly".
"There's no need to apologize. I'm alright", Arizona tried to reassure.
After a now awkward moment of silence, Arizona spoke again. "I'm not sure if I will ever get to that point where I will feel comfortable on a plane again…That almost scares me as much as the plane itself. I loved the magic of being up in the air and watching the world from above. It made everyday problems seem smaller. And there are still so many places I haven't gone yet that I want to see. Paris, Hong Kong, Bora Bora, Trinidad the list goes on and on you know. To think that I will never be able to visit sucks. But I know there are some beautiful places I can still visit while staying on the ground"
Not wanting the first thing to come out of her mouth to be another apology that would just diminish the sincerity, Callie took her time to think of her words. "Never, isn't something that should exist for you," she started, "I have seen you overcome so many obstacles, so many barriers to getting to where you wanted to be and to get to who you wanted to get to. I will never know the type of fear and anxiety that you feel at times on account of what happened. But I do know that if there are places and things that you want to do in life then we will find a way to get you there".
Nothing else was said after that. There was nothing either of them could say. Arizona hoped that one day she could be brave enough like Mark and hop on a plane again. But she also knew that currently, that wouldn't happen any time soon.
Just a few moments later they pulled down a cobblestone road and were greeted at the gates by a well-dressed concierge, valet, and bellhop. Arizona rolled down her window as the concierge approached. "Good afternoon. Welcome to The Willows. May I have your names and IDs please?" He asked with a smile.
"Dr. Arizona Robbins and Dr. Calliope Torres" Arizona heard Callie groan behind her at the sound of her first name as she handed over her ID but Arizona ignored her.
"Oh yes of course. We have been awaiting your arrival. We will take your car from here. Christopher, our bellhop will deliver your luggage to your suite. The room number is here on your door keys. This carriage will take you up to the grounds".
The doors were held open as the two women exited the vehicle and a small carriage pulled by two beautiful brown horses arrived. Callie made her way over to Arizona and whispered to her, "Arizona what is this? Where are we?"
The coachman hopped down and helped each woman into the carriage. " I figured what better way for us to find some peace and relax than at a spa lodge with its own vineyard in the middle of wine country".
Callie sat close to Arizona and gave her a sweet kiss before pulling away and thanking her. Arizona gave her her signature smile as the carriage brought them up to the main building. The beautiful stone building sat on top of a huge hill with a view that would take your breath away.
As they made their way to their suite they were completely stunned. There was a huge king-size bed with beautiful woven linen. Large floor-to-ceiling windows that spanned the length of the far wall giving a view of the mountains. Upon the dresser was a bottle of wine with a card that read, "Thank you doctors for all that you do. Please enjoy a bottle of our house wine on us". In the bathroom, the chilled marble floor was nothing compared to everything else in the room. I crystal chandelier hung about the giant ledged jacuzzi. Beside that was a beautiful rainfall shower with yet another window view of the beautiful land surrounding them.
Arizona came up behind Calliope and wrapped her arms around her and kissed the back of her neck. "I did good didn't I?" Arizona asked with a smile. She has never done such a grand gesture for anyone before. She never found someone deserving enough of the energy. But for Callie, it was all that she wanted to do; surprise her and keep her happy.
"This is amazing, Arizona". Callie turned in her arms to hold her even closer to her body. "Absolutely amazing".
