#7: In Another Life

(May x Gardevoir)

Life was cruel— That's what Faye had decided a long time ago, ever since her original trainer had perished from an unknown illness. His name was often slipping from her mind these days— Wally. He had caught her and raised her through his journey in Hoenn.. But before he could reach his goal of facing off against his rival, he had fallen.

At that time, Faye was merely a Kirlia. She was confused for a while as to why Wally never came to her again, and why this strange girl had taken her in…

It took her a while to realize that this girl was May, Wally's rival. She was the one that Wally wouldn't stop talking about, saying that she was his inspiration. It had made the young Ralts and then Kirlia also look up to May….

Until Wally was gone.

Since then, the Pokemon had hated her new trainer. When offered a Dawn stone, she adamantly refused, and managed to make herself evolve into a Gardevoir one night in defiance of May's wants. The girl had aeemed really sad about that, but Faye didn't care— It was mission accomplished.

Then one day, Faye overheard something that horrified her.

"I'm sorry… I tried," May's voice said chokingly.

"It's okay… You can't force a Pokemon to do anything," spoke Wally's mother.

Faye, who was listening intently from within her Pokeball, an easy feat for any psychic type, listened eagerly, wondering what they were on about.

"But… Wally really wanted her to be Gallade," May said, shaking her head. "What kind of trainer am I if I can't make that happen?"

"May… You were precious to him, I'm sure Wally would be proud of you both no matter what."

Faye, distraught, couldn't control herself. Before she knew it, she burst out of her Pokeball. May stood up, looking at her worriedly, but the Gardevoir didnt dare look her way, quickly beginning to float into the nearest room, closing the door and hiding.

There were some muffled voices on the other side of the door, before it slowly opened, and May stepped into the darkness.

"Faye…?"

The Gardevoir was sitting on the other side of the bed, which was once Wally's, holding her knees to her chest. May came over and sat on the floor beside her.

"I'm guessing you heard that, huh," May spoke softly. "I should've told you… But I didn't want to pressure you."

Faye nodded, not looking at the trainer. She felt terrible, to say the least, and figured that everything Wally had ever wanted was unobtainable because of her.

May sighed and looked around the room. "I know you don't like me, but… I'm always here for you. Wally wanted you to be taken care of."

Faye smiled a bit, activating her mental link with May, her Telepathy ability making it a simple task.

"I clearly don't care about what he wanted…"

"Don't say that," May insisted. "You can make your own decisions, and you did. I didn't tell you, so I…" She shook her head. "I'm at fault."

The Gardevoir finally looked over to the girl. Her telepathy made it easy to read her emotions, but it wouldn't have even been necessary based on how distraught May looked. Something about it brought Faye great pain, and she knew why almost immediately.

You let your previous trainer down… And here you are, hurting your new one, she thought.

"May, will you ever leave me?"

The girl gazed over at the Pokemon, cracking a sad smile.

"Not if I can help it."

Faye nodded, mentally deciding on something. If she was more connected to her trainer, maybe she could prevent anything bad from happening this time. If she could just awaken her future sight with their bond….

"I don't want you to die."

"Well, I'm—-"

The Gardevoir moved in closer, catching May's lips mid speech. The girl froze, her face flushing as their lips connected, unsure of what to do. After a moment, the Gardevoir moved back, sensing mostly confusion from the trainer.

"You did not enjoy that?"

"I… I…" May was dumbfounded. Faye was unsure of what to do after that sort of thing, only having knowledge from watching Wally's parents sometimes and how they interacted.

Then she remembered another thing. She gently grabbed May's hand and placed it on her chest, next to the red protrusion that came out of the Gardevoir's chest and back. She felt more confusion in May's mind.

"I think I know what you're trying to do, but… Faye, that's…"

Faye tilted her head. "I sense… dishonesty. You are lying?"

May's face reddened deeper. The Gardevoir brought the girl's other hand to her chest as well. While there wasn't really anything there, it was soft to the touch, and something about the action did make the Pokemon feel a strange warmth.

"W-Why are you doing this?" As the girl spoke, Faye could feel that May's heart was beating faster. "You're… I…" She searched for the words. "A girl."

"Does that matter?"

Faye could sense that there was some other reason for her reluctance, so she leaned in again and kissed her. This time, May seemed to be slightly more relaxed, the girl's hands gently squeezing Faye's chest, sending a shiver down the Gardevoir's body.

This time when she pulled back, May was gazing at her intensely. "Are you doing this to protect me?"

Faye nodded. "Is that not clear? I… I will not let you die."

To her surprise, May chuckled softly, shaking her head before sliding her hands down to grasp Fays's hands in her own.

"You don't have to do something like this," May said.

"I do, to grow stronger," Faye insisted.

May blinked at her. "Stronger?"

"My bond with Wally was too weak… I want to protect you."

"Then… this means a lot to you?"

Faye nodded, and May sharply inhaled, her mind a jumble that Faye couldn't really decipher.

"Okay then… I'll help you." With that, May stood and locked the door to the bedroom, before sitting on Wally's bed and patting next to herself. "Come over here— Wait, on second thought, this seems… Nevermind."

May went back down to the floor, pushing the Gardevoir onto her back, the Pokemon a bit surprised by what she could sense in the trainer as the girl kissed her.

It was a bit frightening, but also exciting.

Wally's parents were perplexed by the strange noises coming from the room. After an hour, May and the Gardevoir had finally exited and waved goodbye, heading off hand-in-hand without much more.

"I don't even know," Wally's father said, glancing to his wife.

"Best not to know."

After leaving Wally's family abode that day, Faye had a new, brighter outlook on life. The sun seemed to shine brighter now, and her connection to May was more intense than anything she had with Wally before.

I will protect her forever, she thought, gazing at the trainer beside her, who looked a bit sheepish.

"What?"

"I… Uh… It's just… Since your link with me is stronger, I can kinda… Feel what you feel," May explained nervously. "And I can feel that you weren't fully satisfied earlier…"

The Gardevoir blinked at her, then looked down and lifted her dress-like appendage, gazing between her legs. May gasped and grabbed her hand to stop her.

"You can't do that in public… Jeez… You've got a lot to learn still," May huffed.

Faye was confused, but with her mind clearer than ever, she knew that May was the only trainer she could ever have. If she ever perished, Faye would as well. In another life, maybe she could be Human and truly be with May… But for now, this would do—

Because she loved her trainer very much.
